Since moving from San Diego, I've literally flown California Burritos back home and cried about how DC Mexican food scene could never compare. When another location forgot our churros, Isabel was kind enough to accommodate us. Even on a busy Friday night, she was so quick and attentive--even while I spent an extra minute telling her how much I love Taco Stand (sorry Isabel!). Our two tacos and burrito only took about 15 minutes despite the long line. Always happy to come to this location for the friendly, quick service. Our family came down to La Jolla for 3 days 2 nights of fun in and around La Jolla, Point Loma & San Diego while staying at the historic & iconic Hotel Del Coronado. Day one we come across The Taco Stand & decide to have it for brunch, after the cave store, walk along the coast & checking out the tide pools. A short drive & we get get 2 asada burritos, 6 handmade tortilla tacos (with a huge scoop of guacamole) 5 Jarritos & 2 orders of churos, man! They did not disappoint! Final meal in San Diego...was only OK. This place is allegedly a local institution, so we were pretty excited to try it after spending the afternoon at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (*highly* recommend that place btw). There was a line out the door when we arrived, which took a little over 30 minutes, but then the food took another 15-20 minutes, so we were there for a while. The only way to describe this place is organized chaos. There are so many bodies in such a confined space, and everyone is jostling to go this way and that, but somehow it works out. We managed to get some indoor stools by a window and parked ourselves there with some chips and guacamole (both very good) while humanity swarmed around us. We did make it to the amazing salsa station in the back and loaded up with all the goods. Our favorites were the darker salsa, the pickled jalapeño spears, and the cilantro crema. The rest of them we found to be meh. As Texans, we know our way around tacos, and these needed some editing. Basic first rule of tacos: taco integrity! You picked one of these bad boys up and they completely disintegrated in your hands AND they were impossible to eat with the all the toppings. Hard fail IOHO. Some were better than others. The baja taco was excellent because the fish was super crispy and fresh and the toppings were nicely balanced with crunch and acidity. The grilled pesacado, on the other hand, was pretty bad. The fish was way too fishy and the whole thing was wet and fell apart. No. The mushroom taco was a surprise hit that we enjoyed since it was relatively easy to consume and we love mushrooms. Our daughter had a carne asada that she liked but observed that the meat was too chewy (it was), and we all shared the al pastor. It was OK. So, overall, some hits and some misses, but we had an enjoyable time and it was certainly "an experience" that felt local and authentic. I came here with a friend who saw this place on TV. I was excited to try their tacos. It's a small taco restaurant with a little bit of seating inside as well as outside. When we got there the line was out the door, but not too long. We probably waited 10 minutes in line. When I first saw the menu I was worried that 1 taco was $3-5 dollars because I assumed the tacos were more like street tacos. They were bigger than a street taco and filled with meet and guacamole. So I ordered 3 pollo asado tacos with a side of churros. These tacos were BY FAR the best tacos I've ever had. The tortillas you can tell were made fresh from scratch. The chicken was so tender and had a lot of flavor. They put a lot of guacamole, but it wasn't too much or too little. It was also very fresh. As I was eating all I was saying was wow, wow, wow. I was at a loss for words. The churros also wow! They had to make a fresh batch by the time I ordered one so it did take awhile, but honestly so worth the wait. They were hot, fresh, moist and very tasty. I'm usually not a fan of churro because they are typically greasy and crunchy. These were soft like a donut. By far again the best churros I've ever had. The tortillas are hand made. That's always a plus. The nopales taco was cold. I was hoping that it would have been grilled because grilled nopales are fire. The nopales happened to be my least favorite item that I tried. The Al pastor lacked flavor. I also thought it needed to be cooked a little longer. It wasn't under cooked but needed more time. It came with sliced pineapples but it was barely drained and the juices made the taco very wet and sweet. The al pastor taco and nopales taco was served with their cilantro lime dressing which was flavorful. The bean and cheese burrito was good and hearty. It paired well with their chipotle sauce. The carne asada tacos were the best. The carne asada was rich in flavor and the meat was cut into good sized pieces. Served with a good helping of guac and cilantro and onions. The Taco Stand serves incredible tacos just up the street from the beach, and that perfectly captures what makes SoCal such an amazing place to live. We tried almost every taco and the standouts were the Baja and Sonora. The fish in the Baja was perfectly fried. It tasted so fresh and airy. The steak in the Sonora was fatty deliciousness and the melted cheese brought things to another level. We waited in line for 30 min and close to another 10 min for our food to come out. As my first visit to SD in a long, long time, I felt it was necessary to visit one of the most iconic stops in the city! We have The Taco Stand in Las Vegas, but there is truly something special about getting delicious tacos by the water. The wait could get very tedious. The line wraps around the building into the parking lot with cars pulling in & out. You also wait a bit for your food. We ordered online for pickup and still had to wait about 15 minutes when we got there, but honestly good thing we did because the line to order was literally out the door and down the block. They also have a self-serve sauce bar, which I always appreciate. We got carne asada tacos, al pastor tacos, and carne asada fries. The carne asada was solid. Good flavor, decent sized pieces, not dry or chewy, actually pretty tender. The al pastor was kinda underwhelming though. A little dry and just didn't hit the same (flavor-wise). Also not a huge fan of raw onions and they cut them pretty big, so it was a bit overpowering. The fries were really good texture wise, and the steak was just as good as the tacos. This was a taco stand alright because we spent most of our time standing and waiting. That being said, the food tasted so good that it was almost worth it. The parking lot is pretty tiny--especially considering how it's shared by several restaurants. We must have come at the right time though because one spot actually opened up right when we got there! The line never let up the entire time I was there even though it was already well past lunch time on a weekday when we arrived. I think we waited for about an hour before even taking our order. There was plenty of seating both inside and out, but there were just so many people that not everyone had a seat. Not only that, but many of the people who were sitting were still waiting for their food. After ordering, I think we waited another 30 minutes for the food to be done too. Luckily, some people left and we were able to take their seats before the food was done. The entire menu looked really interesting and yummy, so it was hard to make a decision. There was a small fridge by the doorway that was full of alcohol and soda in glass bottles. They even had churros being fried right next to the register! I ended up going with three soft tacos--baja, carne asada, and al pastor. First of all we love places like this and we wanted to love the Taco Stand. Came here on a Thursday at 11:30am. Got lucky parking in their 5 spot parking lot. The inside seating was nice to get away from the outside traffic. We sat closest to the fountain machine/salsa bar and the foot traffic was high. The salsa bar selection catered to all and said how spicy they were. From no spice to super spicy. Menu is on a corrugated aluminum and was kinda hard to read unless you're up close. Seemed like other people were having the same issue so IMO it slows the line done. Food is made to order so the wait can take a while as well, so just be ready to wait a bit, but that's enough of my logistical analysis of the cue. Out of the three Taco Stand locations I've been to, I've definitely visited this location the most. Although known for their tacos, the Taco Stand also has quesadillas, loaded fries, and delicious burritos. I haven't tried their loaded fries yet, but I have tried every taco, every breakfast burrito, some regular burritos, and a mushroom quesadilla. And I'll start with the mushrooms: what a flavorful and interesting choice for a vegetarian meat at a taco shop! I feel like I was thinking about how Mexican food doesn't really feature mushrooms a few years ago, but I either didn't realize or totally forgot about Taco Stand. I guess mushrooms provide the right texture for the way they season and cook meat here. I've also ordered a mushroom taco and a mushroom burrito before, and they're all good. My mom loves mushroom and she really enjoyed her mushroom burrito when I brought her here. For the tacos, I honestly think they're all good, but make sure you add cheese! They grill it so it sticks to the tortilla. My favorite taco is the sanora taco, which comes pre-loaded with toppings and salsa. If you like to add salsa yourself, they do have a pretty bangin' salsa bar, which provides salsa of every spicy level, pico de gallo, pickled veggies, and limes. My fiancé and I enjoy the cilantro crema the most, and we've tried them all except the "hottest" salsa (which comes pre-portioned). Their breakfast burritos are fiiiire, but I don't know if they offer them at other locations, or just this one. I know that you can't call in to place an order, and the online menu doesn't list breakfast burritos yet, so you have to just show up in the morning and hope for the best. They have some unique offerings for breakfast burritos that fall outside of the "eggs, potato, meat" format. Taco Stand is also home to my fiancé's favorite California burrito of-all-TIME! He exclusively comes here to get one, and I've tried it, and it's pretty dang good. The seasoned fries are what elevate it, methinks. As for ambiance, uhhh it's taco shop ambiance? This location has bar seating for the windows that meet in the corner of the shop (which is pretty cool for this location), and the other tables are for small parties (maybe one or two available for a group of 4). Their branding is "red accents" so you see this in the dining room as well. Anyhoo, if you come early enough on the weekends for the breakfast burritos, the line isn't too bad yet. I think once it reaches like 11am, you shouldn't expect to wait any less than 30 minutes for food if you order in-person. I've definitely seen the line go out and down the street many times while driving by. But it's a pretty well-oiled machine and the employees work hard and get through lots of orders every day. This place was fantastic thoughSunday afternoon it was crazy busy. My group had a Carne Asada burrito and Fish burrito (both huge) with chicken, fish and an el pastor taco. The cashier got the order perfect along with her great personality. Parking is not easy and there is no restroom. Will be back next time we vist! read more
