5/5 - Rubio's Coastal Grill (Rebuilt Location) - Absolutely Worth the Visit! I was excited to check out the rebuilt Rubio's after the original location burned down a couple of years ago. The new space is fantastic! They've completely redesigned the interior with way more seating area, making it feel more spacious and comfortable while still keeping that bright, fresh Rubio's vibe. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality blew me away. Don, the General Manager, was incredible. He let us come in a few minutes before they officially opened so we could wait inside comfortably, and he was kind enough to let me take photos for this review. His level of care and presence is exactly what every restaurant in the franchise should aim for. It really set the tone for the entire experience. The restaurant itself is spotless - very well-kept and clean from front to back. Prices are more than fair for the generous portions you get (I snapped some pics of the menu to show what I mean). The food was very good overall - fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. My only tiny note is that the rice and beans tasted a bit different from the "old" recipe I was used to. Nothing wrong with the new version at all (it's still delicious!), but after years of loving the previous flavor profile, it caught me off guard. That's purely personal preference and in no way takes away from how solid everything was. From start to finish, this visit was a 10/10. Great rebuild, outstanding management, clean facility, fair prices, and tasty food. If you're in the area, definitely stop by - and if Don is working, you're in for an extra warm welcome. I love how my favorite Rubios ever is minutes away from my house. Food is so consistent. It is so important to have the app because of all the cool rewards and it's also easier to order on the go through the app. You know how i know this? The wonderful staff from Rubios. The manager (Don, I believe) is on top of it! He is professional (and reminds me of Gus from Breaking Bad), but he seems truly trustworthy! I'm so glad Rubio's in Vista is back! I had the Shrimp Trio and my boyfriend got the Beer Battered Fish Burrito--both were delicious and super fresh. The shrimp had great flavor and variety, and the burrito was crispy, hearty, and satisfying. We used to come here before it sadly burned down, and it's great to see it reopened and just as good (if not better) than before. The place feels clean and welcoming, and the staff was friendly and quick with our order. First, let me say we were greeted by a warm employee named Sam! I'm trying to stay on my favorite plant diet so Sam recommended the sweet potato tacos and they were delicious. They had flavored sweet potato, cabbage, and believe it or not, corn nuts for that great crunch! Topped with lime crema....WOW. You gotta try them. Steak Asada Fries were perfect with the creamy guacamole and pico. Fish tacos always hit the spot. I had the mango iced tea, but there is an array of juices and Coke products to choose your drink. Unacceptable Experience - Walked Out Without My Food or RefundI had a highly disturbing and unsettling experience at this Rubio's location. I placed an order and paid for my food, but the behavior and demeanor of the people inside were so deeply uncomfortable and hostile that I felt completely unsafe waiting around. The environment was so unsettling that I ultimately decided it was not worth my safety or peace of mind to stay.I had to walk out of the restaurant without even receiving the food I paid for, and because of how intense the situation was, I couldn't even safely request a refund from the counter. Leaving a paying customer feeling so alienated and unwelcome that they have to abandon their paid meal just to exit the building is a massive failure. I will absolutely not be returning to this location, and management needs to take a serious look at how the environment in this store is being curated. read more

Step one....This place has dwindle over the years and has finally hit bottom. A 1998 Cabo Combo was to die for. There shrimp burrito was amazing. Decent size, dripping a juicy tangy fish taco sauce with every bite. That same burrito today is literally shrimp, beans, dry rice, and a few diced tomatoes. There lobster burrito is the same but held back to the least amount of lobster they can put in them. Once i got one that had 2 tiny pieces in it a inch long. Back in the day there food was more authentic. I dont think you could even find someone from Baja that wouldn't give this place a decent review. Its all about money now slanging the cheapest quality for more volume. Creating tasteless white bread bowls of slop. Left field burritos, and fish tacos so fried that the fish gets burned crunchy. They look very assembly lined and put together in hurry by there staff of teenagers who are careless and itching to close early giving looks of disgust that someone would wanna order food 2 hours before closing. These kids will get 1 out of 3 orders correct. I've had missing sides, forgotten tacos, missing dressings for salads. This last one was tortillas missing for my kids build your own taco plate. Get that. Fish taco stuff. No tortillas. Holy Mother of god. If you call them back they have no training on how to deal with something like this besides saying oh sorry. Come back and we will give you some. Lol. Yeah after my kids crying. I have to stop eating my food to go back to get them so both meals are cold. A 50 doller meal ruined. I love Rubio's fish tacos. I got two on a flour tortilla and one on corn tortilla. The corn one was super dry but I really enjoyed the flour ones. I like how their to go containers are shaped to hold the tacos in place. Visually the tacos don't looks that good but I think they taste good. The bathroom was pretty clean and they have a code so not everyone is just coming and going. The parking lot is absolutely horrendous. Yes there is a lot of space to park but it will take u forever to get in and out because there isn't a lot of openings to the main road & it's pretty tight so good luck if someone backs up on you. read more

Finally. 3 years later, 3 years of anticipation and longing. I was there the night it burned down. I was driving back from closing my bar down when I called a friend to share the bad news of me seeing fire trucks hosing it down as I came north on College. Rubio's recently closed a ton of locations and tbh most of them couldn't hold their own, were inconsistent, understaffed, and failing. While this one even before was a flagship and that's why in all that turmoil this one was re-opening while other were closing. It's not just the location, it's the standard, no wonder they train other places people here. Parking is still bad, but that's not their fault. They kept some of the old aesthetic, remodeled the floor to add a bathroom without sacrificing too much space. The new menu to me is clearer than the older kinda, prices are again reasonable. Staff and service is impeccable as always. The only thing that I'd say is noticeable is speed. They aren't the fastest store, but they are consistent. I'd rather it be good and the same every time and be 5% slower than have timing be all over the place from anywhere from 5 to 20 minute waits. The new sodas and condiment design/offerings are certainly part of the refresh and are turning out to be just a better more efficient way to do things. Came here from F&F as I stalked their open every step of the way. As a local born and raised here I'm a lifer. I come here first when I return from my travels, more so than other more iconic San Diego food fare like a California burrito. Even my family who has moved away always get Rubio (from here preferably ) when they come home to visit. There must be something in the batter. read more

We were so excited that this Rubio's was now open. The place looked really nice. Came in around 6:30pm during the dinner rush. It took a while to finally get to the counter to order but we were ok waiting. My family ordered the steak burrito and my husband originally wanted the Mahi burrito and was told they ran out of Mahi so he settled for salmon. I ordered the gourmet shrimp plate with chips and beans. And a side of chips. We got our food and I was sooo dissatisfied with my meal. The beans I got were very runny. Went back to ask for another and was told "at this time the beans are all like that" YUCK. Why would you serve beans like that? Keep in mind the "batch" of beans prior to mine looked so much better and my boys and their friends said were good. So instead of beans I asked for the citrus rice. That was the blandest rice I've ever tasted. No flavor at all. I had to add my own lime juice to make it taste halfway decent. And to top it off, the side of chips was stale and their salsa bar needed to be refreshed with fresh salsa. It looked as it was sitting there from the lunch rush. The mild salsa did not taste right. I seriously thought I was going to get food poisoning. I did not enjoy my meal at all. The only good part about my meal were the shrimp tacos. Flavorful and tasted good. Gave 1 star for the tacos and 1 star for the decor and 1 star for the nice young man at the register. It's too bad because we love Rubio's. Hope management reads all the reviews and makes the appropriate improvements. Hoping to give it another try but will give it a few months to make changes. read more

Edited to add: After receiving a response from Brad, the owner, I've reduced my review to one star. The fact that Brad did not offer to refund a portion of our order or to remake the meatless burritos shows a lack of good customer service. We were looking forward to Rubio's reopening...but disappointed now that we've tried them. We ordered the family burrito box with shrimp and steak burritos. The box came with two shrimp burritos, two steak burritos, beans, rice, a tiny bit of guacamole, and chips. We also added on several salsas, limes, and spicy carrots. The cost was $59.54 The "box" was actually a huge plastic tray (shame on you, Rubio's for not caring about the environment) with a huge plastic cover. Which came in a huge plastic bag. The burritos were cut in half and wrapped as eight halves rather than four wholes, something we did not request. The beans and rice were in the corners of the tray, and the chips came in multiple small bags as Rubio's stated they were out of the "catering" chip bags. Here's why I only gave two starts... We ordered shrimp and steak burritos but received shrimp and chicken burritos. I tried calling the store to see if they could/would correct their mistake only to be hung on by their automated system, stating the store was too busy to answer my call. Here's the funny/sad part... even though the burritos were tagged chicken and we ordered steak... there was literally NO meat (chicken or steak) in the burrito. It was rice, beans and salsa... I understand shrinkflation is a thing, but a little taste of meat would have been nice! The shrimp burrito did have a few pieces of shrimp (a few, as in three), but it tasted nothing like the shrimp burrito I remembered and loved and my reason for ordering Rubio's last night. The beans were excellent, the guacamole was very tasty and all of the salsas have great flavor. The rice was a bit crunchy. My husband picked up the order and said the inside of the store looks very nice. He also said the staff was friendly and helpful. Will we be ordering from Rubio's again? No! I don't mind paying $60 for a meal as long as I get what I ordered and it actually has the ingredients in it I'm paying for. Yea! This location has finally reopened after being rebuilt. It's the most convenient location for us & their fish & shrimp tacos taste great. Ordering is challenging because the new decor is all tile so sounds bounce off the walls & it's loud. So we got a catering order time ago and it was incredibly good! Ordered a small order of 6 tacos and they were NOT good. So it depends. They shrimp tacos was great but the rest were not. They didn't send enough of the sauces we requested. Their white sauces is super good. Wish they didn't mix onion and cilantro. Only want cilantro but no option for that. So glad that this Rubio's is here! After a Covid, a big fire that burned it to the ground, and some bankruptcy talk, it's nice to see it has survived! The decor is fresh and bright, the staff are super friendly and nice and the food is fresh, flavorful, and delicious. And there is a salsa bar! They have Taco Tuesday specials (2.50/3.00) and even have a free taco deal if the Padres steal a base. So fun! Food is cooked as ordered so don't expect it to come out immediately, but you can expect it to be freshly made and visually appealing. This is the best managed Rubios I've ever been into. I placed a catering order for the wrong day on accident and when I came in the manager helped me cancel that, and get it placed for when I needed it and was super helpful and understanding the whole time. This Rubio's Restaurant location is temporarily closed due to there was a fire that happened last night at this restaurant. I also talked to this security guard tonight and asked him if he knows what happened to this Rubio's Restaurant? Brad said he doesn't know the reason this Rubio's Restaurant caught on fire last night. I did watch on channel 8 news last night at 5 p. m. the insurance company is doing an investigation on the reason Rubio's Restaurant the roof is burned. I told Brad this security guard tonight, it makes me feel really sad because I really enjoyed eating inside this Rubio's Coastal Grill Restaurant and I also would place my online orders on their Rubio's Coastal Grill Restaurant website. I really love their Mexican Cuisine. When Rubio's Coastal Grill Restaurant re-opens back up some day, I will still be their loyal customer because I enjoyed dining inside their restaurant and I also received excellent customer service from all of their staff members. Nikki who was working as their assistant manager that was sometime in November of 2021. I had the opportunity to speak to Nikki when I ate inside their Rubio's Coastal Grill Restaurant. Nikki is an awesome assistant manager. I have eaten Rubio's Coastal Grill Restaurant Mexican Cuisine at least (10 times) because I love their Shrimp Burritos, their Three Trio Soft Fish Tacos, Fully Loaded Nachos, Avocado Chicken Bowls, Chicken Tortilla Soup, and their decadent Brownies and Churros. I really miss their Mexican Food. This Rubio's Coastal Grill Restaurant is very unique and all of their ingredients is fresh and made to order the same day. I ended up catering from pollo loco after 8 calls attempts to Rubio's. Rubio needs people like Don to go out of business fast. read more

Dear Rubio's Team, I wanted to share some feedback regarding a recent visit to your Oceanside location. We came in around 7:15 PM on a Sunday, two hours before closing, and were surprised to find that both steak and chicken were unavailable. This isn't the first time we've encountered inventory issues at this location--during a previous visit, we found that you were out of beans for takeout orders. On this most recent visit, the staff mentioned they had just enough chicken for our burrito, which left us concerned that it might not be a full portion. Paying for something and worrying about whether it's a complete serving really diminishes the overall experience. Additionally, we were given a QR code to provide feedback through a survey, but unfortunately, it led to a broken link. While we understand that sometimes supplies can run low toward the end of the day, we were a bit disappointed by the lack of key ingredients. We know Sundays can be busy, and we appreciate the hard work your team puts in to serve customers. We just wanted to share this feedback in hopes that it might be helpful for future planning. I am giving this Rubios a five star because the food is excellent, love the salsa, shrimp, and fish tacos!!! I am so glad this Rubios finally opened. The atmosphere is friendly and good service. So I will definitely be back to this Rubios because it is near my home but only for take out. This is because I am greatly disappointed with the seating setup. it looks really small and very uncomfortable. The seating shrunk drastically I mean something went wrong in the planning and the square footage is more like a hole in a taco shop. The Rubios at Melrose by the courthouse has excellent seating. On a side note, I just love those comments on people complaining about plastic bags and covers and the environment. read more

I ordered a bean burrito and steak taco to go and not only were both terribly cold but the bean burrito for some reason had hard beans in it and were saturated with pepper and salsa. Worst catering experience I have ever had. 5 to 10 minutes late is understandable for a large order. However, I placed a pick up order for 11:30am for a 12pm lunch. I did not receive my order until 12:05pm ultimately causing me to be 20 minutes late. This was a very stressful and frustrating experience. read more

My friend and I frequent this Rubio's location and have for many years. Despite the fire and waiting for the rebuild, we've continued to support this business. Because we find the use of many small plastic containers as wasteful and unhealthy for the environment, we always request the 4oz containers for salsa. This has never been an issue at any of the Rubio's resturants we've visited throughout Southern California. Today, when we requested the 4 of containers, the line worker happily fulfilled our request however, the manager stepped in when packaging our to go order, asked where we got the containers and proceeded to tell us "Well, you won't be getting those here anymore." I find this extremely rude, and not customer friendly at all. At this point I will not return to this rsturant, I will tell my friends to not patronize this specific resturant and I will be putting in a call to corporate over the rudeness. read more

Holy Impossible Cow! Vegetarian's delight! And, carnivores too. Quick side note- I'm shocked to see the overall rating and latest, but not too recent reviews. I came here to give Rubio's a solid FIVE after ordering on UberEats, where they have a really good rating. As an out-of-towner, I'm always a little more leery ordering online. Rubio's did not disappoint! I snuck my order in close to closing time and could tell it was still thoughtfully prepared - from the delicious Mexican street corn to the Especial Impossible Burrito. I went for the brown rice and quinoa instead of the recommended citrus rice, I'm sure both are just as good. I also opted for the "no-fried" pinto beans instead of the black beans. It's really nice to have options. Speaking of options... the salsas! Oh my goodness, the salsas! I asked for five different options and every single one was excellent - from mild and fresh to super hot and flavorful, green and red. Last but not least, the white sauce, YUM. Creamy and smoky. Came in today It's been a while since I stopped by a rubios and figured I'd swing by and see how it's been as they had a new seasonal surf n turf deal going on I order the surf and turf taco plate The chicken and a shrimp nacho Kids chicken meal And a fish taco plate The Lobster and a steak taco Very minimal meat in both the lobster taco was super soggy and cold asked for beans and rice Only got a side of beans in a small container Kids chicken meal A pinch of stale fries and chicken bites Not worth the 6$ at all Chicken and shrimp nachos Extremely skimp and dry portions of cheese beans and guacamole stale chips and minimal amount of protein on both the shrimp had an over the top fishy smell that wasn't appetizing The fish taco plate I ordered as a combo I asked for rice and beans as well No beans just rice plate was soggy on the bottom and a complete mess of tacos I live 5 minutes from the place and I ordered in store The food all was mediocre and barely warm I think rubios really needs to review their presentation as well as quality control.... read more
