Stopped by this place a couple Saturday's ago craving a solid meal, and we weren't that impressed. The breakfast burrito itself was ok, but the major issue I had was that the potato slices inside were just too big to enjoy with the meal. They also didn't feel like they were cooked all the way through as they were still somewhat hard to eat. The rolled tacos were better, however the tortillas were a bit too dry for our preferences. While they weren't bad, they definitely came across as too dry and a bit stale. The rest of the ingredients were good, but I don't think we will return to this location as there are more reliable options for Mexican food nearby. read more

I've heard about Oscar's for years and finally tried the San Marcos location. The late night crowd was a bit strange, but we wanted to pick up some takeout on our way home. We tried a bunch of tacos but I wish we only got a bunch of the fish tacos. - cabeza: pretty decent - fish: solid fish tacos with a generous amount of mayo...would recommend - carne asada: so dry and bland - adobada: burnt, dry, bland The salsa bar was also not impressive. Their salsas were COMPLETELY watered down. Overall- this is a skip for me when they are so many other good taco spots in SD. THE BEAT CARNE ASADA NACHOS EVER!! Their carne asada is fantastic quality. I never get a piece of grizel in any of my carne asada dishes and that's saying a lot. We got: Adobada Burrito - nephew loved it and said he'd get it again. The meat was delicious. Carne Asada Taco - this was huge and really good. Came on a soft corn tortilla with onions and cilantro. Chicken Taco - this came on a hard shell with cheese and lettuce. We also ordered chips with guacamole and pico de gallo. Pozole? More like beef soup. I love the flavor of their pozole. Only thing, there's not even 6 pieces of hominy.... yes, I counted!! Extremely disappointing...I had to have my boyfriend go back and order me another and ask specifically for more hominy because all I got was meat in broth... really annoying. This place is great especially since it is a 24 hour drive through. It's fast and convenient and the food is decently good. One of my favorites is the surf and turf burrito (asada and shrimp) - it's not dry; the shrimp is cooked perfectly and there is guacamole and I believe some salsa and carne asada in it. I like how they don't fill it with rice like some places do. It's also huge! Decent price (around $12) I can't speak yet for the other food but my husband likes their menudo. One of my go-to spots when I'm in San Marcos! Staff is friendly, attentive and accommodating. Decent salsa bar, but more importantly they are on top of it--cleaned and topped off when I asked for more of the spicy green sauce. Not all taco shops serve mojarra frita, so when I saw it on the menu I had to order it--especially since the price of burritos have skyrocketed everywhere! Might as well go for the fancy dishes! Don't let the low reviews deter you. Every time I've come so far, there are people dining in and cars in the drive-thru. Man, I don't like writing negative reviews, let alone 2-star ones. One star is easy, you go to a place no one is expecting to be any good, the experience is so bad that it's funny, and you go out of your way to try to be comical in your abuse. But when a place is just downright disappointing? Where it doesn't even measure up to the level of "m'eh" ... where you end up wondering how it's stayed open for so long? One would typically have to go somewhere as far as Kansas to find Mexican food of that caliber. And yet, here in San Marcos is Oscar's. Usually, with places like this, you take the Yelp reviews in stride. You ignore the crying Karens who experienced the horrors of waiting in line for 15 minutes or were asked to wear a mask. You wave away the 5 star reviews from people with less than 10 reviews to their name. Then you take all other ones with a grain of salt; I mean, my own father gave this place 4-stars and only tried their rolled tacos ... the plastic sheen on that processed cheese still reminds my of my Zartan GI Joe action figure from when I was a kid. With all that, and after seeing Oscar's so often as it occupies its prime spot on Rancho Santa Fe, the family figured we should finally give it a try. I had a basic Bean and Rice Burrito. The refried beans were very bland, no salt, very little flavor from anything the beans may have been soaked in, and no seasoning from onions or lard from the frying. The rice was mushy, with no good separation that comes from toasting the rice before cooking, and felt like it was just boiled in chicken stock with no other care or additional seasoning. My wife had a California Burrito which she found to be about as dry as a brick. The carne asada had all the fat and juice overcooked out of it and the fries had little salt on them. She was only able to eat about half of it and the second half that she had the next day had to have salsa and sour cream stuffed into so she could choke it down. My son enjoyed his Rolled Tacos and they looked fine. Though, he did admit that he preferred the ones he's gotten at multiple other places instead of Oscar's. The Guacamole looked and felt like it was pureed, thin and goopy, as opposed to being thick with chunks of salsa or heavier avocado. The same went for the Salsa Verde, which was essentially green tinted water that had some heat, but little flavor. The last thing on our table was some Caldo de Res, which turned out to be water boiled with cabbage, carrots, and whatever beef didn't make the cut in a carne asada burrito. No searing of the beef before cooking, no use of stock beforehand, no tuétano in the soup ... seriously about $9 for boiled, leftover meat scraps. About the only good thing I can say about our dinner was that the chips they included were nice and warm. All that for a price about 30%-40% higher than much tastier places elsewhere in the city. If Oscar's had been much better back in the day, it may be time to dust off those old recipes. Until then, while the food maybe considered edible, it sure as hell isn't worth going out of your way to get. A very weak 2 stars from me. read more

I drove thru Oscar's late one afternoon when I hadn't gotten around to breakfast, brunch, or lunch and was seriously hangry. not a fan of pre-grated cheese so processed with whatever it doesn't clump (or melt) so I'm not sure if they were REALLY as good (it's not like fast-food Mex is 5-star cuisine) but those rolled tacos really hit the spot. Food came fast, but I also ordered a breakfast burrito and it was on the cold side with too much and too cold potato that I didn't notice the other ingredients. Like others mentioned, $1.60 to add sour cream to each order is ridiculous. Also, the hot sauces are like water which is a pet peeve of mine. Customers would use less if they were thicker so they are actually being less efficient. Almost always there is something "off" about the sauce bar. Either one of the hot sauces is unavailable ...the tomatillo avocado sauce is actually good, but some times not there, or today, no lids. Never had a problem with their service inside, but always something disappointing. $3.20 to add some sour cream to my order shakes me to my taco shop core. read more

They didn't get soggy at all, even with all of the toppings. That's always the best. The nachos are huge and so delicious, everything tastes fresh. This is our go to taco shop when we're in this area of town. We have our Northeast County, Middle North County and West North County taco shops. This is our Middle North County taco shops. Today I had the pollo asado burrito and it was HUGE! I had to cut it in half for later. I also got rolled taco. The pollo asado was very tasty. The salsas they provide are great and only enhance the flavors. The rolled tacos have a generous portion of guacamole and cheese. My wife's nachos were great too. I like this place for many reasons. One being really yummy food. So far I've had rolled tacos, a veggie burrito, a bean and cheese burrito, and a California burrito. All of them were great and huge portions but the California burrito was definitely the STAR. Lots of crispy fries, tons of gooey cheese, the meat was DELICIOUS and perfectly juicy. The salsa bar is also my favorite because they give you unlimited spicy carrots and jalapeños if you dine inside. The mild and spicy salsa isn't anything spectacular but whatever they put in that green creamy salsa rocked my WORLD. One star removed because they charge and exorbitant amount for any modifications. The Carne Asada Fries are amazing, you can taste the flavor of the meat opposed to Mexican places where the meat feels "watery/chewy". Quality and customer service has gone wayyyy down here. I ordered a cup of menudo like I normally do and when I got home and opened the cup there was just caldo no meat and no hominy. I was charged full price as a cup of menudo with hominy and meat when I called the person who took my call was rude and said it was my fault for ordering so late in the day that sometimes they run out and only have the caldo left. So I started coming back to Oscars on a regular basis. Why? Well because my former usual go-to Mexican place up the road hired a super grouchy, unfriendly, and ungracious counter person. Unfriendly service means that I move on and the people who work at Oscars have always been super nice! Oscars ROCKS and I'm a raising their Yelp rating from 3 to a well deserved 5 stars!!! Oscars remains consistently and reliably great!!! Delicious and affordable food, relatively fast service, decent beer selection, and they are open 24 Hours!!! They cook each order individually which takes a bit longer but also means that you're getting super fresh Mexican yummys!!! I truly love their Carne Asada Fries, Cabeza Tacos, delicious, albeit pricey ($10.45) Mariscos Burrito, Chile Rellenos, and ANYTHING with shrimp on their menu...REALLY, Oscar's Shrimp Enchiladas are truly magnificent!
