    Steak n chik taco combo

A "hole in the wall" atmosphere w/ average food. I ordered two taco combo plate w rice and beans. This is how i usually judge the food based on tacos rice n beans. I usually get 3 tacos (steak, chick, and pastor) to set the bar but just went w steak and chick as server said those were the "most fresh being cooked right now". Steak was average. Chick was a little rubbery. Rice was good. Beans were avg. flavor was ok. Price was as expected but should be more of a "taco shop" instead of a sit down

Food was amazing. Had Carne asada plate and 6 tacos, 2 carnitas,2 asada,1pastor and 1adobada. Tacos were nice and juicy!! Carne asada plate with beans and rice and salsa was delicious.Highly recommend the tacos. Staff was nice and helpful. All our food came steaming and Fast. Have delicious aguas to pair with your tacos! Even has a panderia next store Highly recommended stopping here to grab a bite.

Doesn't look like much from the outside especially being next to the hotel and across the street from Home Depot-- it's easy to see why you may think it's not much. But this is my ABSOLUTE fav Mexican food restaurant. From simple "taco shop" foods, like burritos, quesadillas, rolled tacos alll are delicious To the more restaurant style entres a few of my top fav are the fajitas, molcajetes which come with so so so much food. Carne asada, pollo asado, shrimp, nopales, onion, jalapeños, queso fresco, salsa, avocado. It's TOP NOTCH. They have an extensive menu- from some seafood, soups, even authentic Mexican appetizers like huaraches. Everything is so so good. Can't forget to mention the chips and salsa! Which you have to ask for it is not a standard thing for every table. The aguas frescas are quite honestly the best around, better than any other place I've had aguas frescas from. The service is nice, definitely a mom and pop restaurant so be patient in terms of speed of food coming out. You can also call the restaurant and take the food to go-- but personally I enjoy sitting and eating there. They also have a variety of beers-- they don't offer liquor which I think margaritas would set this place off the charts lol but otherwise this place is so so good. Give it a try- this hole in the wall will not disappoint. And the bakery next door is also amazing- if you like pan dulce you will be in for a treat.

Place has rats I warn you

!!! WARNING!!! PLACE HAS mice / rats Food 5 stars, location 5 stars, first time at this place, food was so delicious, 30 minutes later I saw a small mice and then another one by the counter, I was so excited to rate this place with 4 star , specially the food because it was good, love it, but when I saw the rats, OMG I was upset to my stomach, yes Two rats not one but two. Now I'm not complaining about the food, but I Do Not recommend Chico's restaurant. I will hate to see anyone get sick. I'm so upset everything was so good until I saw the rats running around the floor.

Great tasting, authentic Mexican food joint! This is but your typical "____bertos" where it's about how much food you get and whether it's a California "insert mexican food name here" dish. This is truly Mexican food, prepared for you by Mexican people, that provide prompt, polite service in a humble but well maintained place. Now, let me be honest here; the restaurant is not decorated well nor does it have updated booths, tables and chairs...I did say it was a humble setting:-) My wife and I have been searching for a spot in san marcos that has great tasting food and finally found it. We came here for a Sunday morning breakfast. I had the Chilaquiles with carne asada and she had three tacos. Chilaquiles are in green sauce, for those not in the know the green sauce is made with tomatillos and is more acidic in tasty, but extremely delicious if you know what to expect! Steak was great also but was a bit overdone for my taste and made it a bit tough. Her tacos were of: adobada, asada, and pollo. All three were delicious and were on a fresh corn tortillas (full size tortillas not teenie taco size). They all came with cilantro and onion on the tacos, so if you're not into that ask for it on the side. For a bonus, the place is collocated next to a bakery and carniceria/market where they have all sorts of delicious Mexican treats. See you next time chicos...btw if the place had nicer digs and better parking situation I would have bumped it to a 5 star review.

Fresh adobada Tacos BOMB. Weekends only...
    Robert J.

Here exclusively for the adobada tacos and they were not only fresh, huge, fat with meat, the corn tortilla is fresh hand made. These tacos are only available here weekends only...

They have a good happy hour and a great patio…read more They just need to be a little clearer with drinks. Menu says "house wine" $10, or $6 at happy hour, but it doesn't list what the wine options are. I was trying to get a beer at happy hour prices, and they ran out and needed a new keg. No biggie except I didn't need a beer that much and my friends were waiting. I looked at the open wines at the bar, Estancia and J. Lohr. So I said, ok, I don't need to wait for a new keg, I'll just take the J. Lohr. It was going to be $14, because "it's not the happy hour wine." I don't know how anyone would no, cuz there's no wine list at the bar! Luckily they were nice and priced it at the $6 "this once." But it would be helpful if they listed what wines they have and had it either on the menu, or on the happy hour list ("not premium wines" or something). Anyway, I had fun. Food was decent. It's good that this place is still in Restaurant Row - so much of it is gone!

The bar has quite a bit of seating both at the actual bar and at tables including high tops and regular. Very clean and a nice ambiance as well. We were quickly greeted with warm, fresh chips & salsa as well as an order of waters. The waiter was very kind and great to talk with. He gave us just enough time to think about what we wanted and came back. We went with the house margaritas ($6), a few beers ($6), two large beef tacos ($8) and nachos with carnitas ($8). I was impressed with how stuffed the crunchy tacos were and how flavorful the carnitas were in the nachos. The meal was plenty to share with one person. Our waiter great throughout the whole meal so I really appreciated it. For a nice, weekday happy hour with good food, good drinks and good service, this is the place.

This place is great!…read more Wife and I came out on a date night to this local spot we've been trying to come to for months. It was on a Friday night, the place was packed, and difficult to find a spot to park. The line to order was almost out the door, but still fast to get through, and we were quick to choose what we wanted before struggling to find a spot to sit and talk. After about 15 minutes, our order was ready and we got to enjoy our food. We started with the Carne Asada Nachos, Refried Beans on the side. The meat was flavorful, very tender, and plentiful atop a pile of crisp and fresh tortilla chips. The cheese was nice and salty and the sour cream was warm to the point where it drizzled over it all nicely. All in all, it was a very tasty start to the night. The only two issues I had with it were that the guac was a bit overly pureed, making it kind of runny. And the refried beans had a very sour flavor, making me think that they were over the edge of going spoiled. I had to thank my wife's aversion to eating beans, helping us avoid having them spooned on top, which would have ruined this course. I also had an Al Pastor Taco, Craft Coast Style. The whole it was crisped up well, the cheese forming a great crust on the inside of the taco. The meat was sweetly marinaded, flavorful and delicious. On top of it was a good amount of beans, onions, cilantro, and guacamole, making for a good sized taco without any overflowing. It was pretty damn tasty. So, our first trip out here had more highs than lows, resulting in a very positive initial dinner. I'm sure those beans were just a one-off, at least I hope they were. And there's still hope that the guac may have had too much lime or had been overly mixed this time around. A second trip is definitely in the cards, with more of the family to expand what comes to the table.

The shrimp burrito was enough to honestly feed two people. The fries alone were enough to feed 3. There was only two of us to tackle these orders. The bolt fries had curly fries, longanisa, guac, cheese and sour cream. Those were my favorite. The flavors blended well together. The shrimp burrito was ok. The rice was hard and old so it was difficult to eat. I would probably recommend skipping the burrito, hence the 4/5. I'm not sure what changed in the kitchen but I pretty bummed on the last 5 times I've gone. I get the California every time I go and add guac for reference, I'm a simple guy. Under-seasoned meat or not enough meat, soggy or dry/stale fries, light on guacamole when added sometimes, missing cheese. The consistency has been really off unfortunately for a pretty simple burrito. My last time I went I ordered the usual California burrito no sour cream add guac, got the burrito and it had sour cream and guac.... But no meat???? It was a big tortilla with sour cream and guacamole only in it lol. I laughed at the mix up and the customer service was great getting a refund (didn't request it they just gave it to me) and replacement burrito. Still decided it was my last time going there after that as even the replacement tasted like the meat had no seasoning on it. Writing this review to hope they turn things around some time in the future, I miss coming here but can't justify spending that much $ for a burrito I'm worried to be bummed about....again.
