A really good spot for Thai food! I think this might be the best pad thai I've ever had, TBH. It's just the right amount of sweet and savory and their noodles had the perfect consistency. Other places always seem to miss the mark but they do this dish RIGHT. I've also ordered the yum watercress since it seemed to be a popular item on the menu. It is basically fried shrimp & squid with fried watercress, onion, shallots, and cashew nuts. I got the sauce it comes with on the side and it is so good - I believe it was called a spicy lime dressing on the menu, but it definitely seemed to have a vinegar base that complemented this fried appetizer really well. You can't go wrong with their crab pineapple fried rice either. It has raisins and cashew nuts in it which is definitely different but it just works. Every single dish I tasted minus one (the pork belly- which was just too hard to eat) was clutch. But one dish just BLEW MY MIND! The "Yum Watercress"- and I was trying to think of how to pay tribute to how amazing it was... the only way I think I could do this is through a sonnet entitled: Yum Watercress "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" Amazing food and service, but it is a bit pricey. This is my favorite Thai go to spot in silver spring.

Tofu dish was the miss of the night because the bean curd didn't absorb much flavor... I'd skip it in the future. Drunken noodles are okay, not too greasy. Larb is minced fine and seasoned brightly, middle of the road quality. Pork belly was fried in a traditional style to be super crunchy, but wouldn't survive well as leftovers. Deep-fried flounder was beautifully cooked: crispy fins and tail, scored and crackled skin, eyes and flesh still moist. The accompanying sauce was equal parts salty and sweet, garnished with chopped cilantro, and not too watery. Sizing was on fair scale with market price. Stir-fried eggplant was worth getting again (flavorful and cooked just through), but I'm quite curious about it's yum alternative-- heck, all the yum alternatives. All the hype you hear about the yum watercress is true: it's an affordable and well-balanced dish not to be missed. Stir-fried boneless duck was a similarly epic win on texture and taste fronts. Four and a quarter stars. Even if parking in the area is consistently a pain, I'm glad they expanded into the space next door. Where they disappoint me with largely mainstream menu options, they make up for in fresh ingredients, hints of spice at minimum, and skilled execution. With friendly service, I'll be back when I'm in the area craving basic Thai dishes. read more

Have only eaten here a few times, but each time I was very happy with my meal. I've tried their shrimp pad Thai and the drunken noodle. Both are delicious, and the shrimp pad Thai comes with plenty of shrimp (many other places skimp on the shrimp!). Will definitely be back for more soon! read more

There's so many options, and judging by how packed it was they're probably REALLY good! I stick to the traditional pad thai and Tom Kha soup (coconut with chicken). You have the option of different sizes and meats to add...and you can't go wrong with chicken! Sure, the waitresses aren't that pleasant. Whatever. I don't expect someone to kiss my a** at every establishment. As long as the food's good and arrives in a timely fashion you have my approval. The curry puffs are wonderful! Not as big as I would've liked, but they definitely made up for it in taste. I was here a couple days ago and for some reason, it smelled a little bit like wet dog. I was in the mood for Thai so I ordered from Ruan Thai via Grubhub. My meal took much longer to arrive than I expected. It took so long that I started to wonder if I should contact Grubhub to cancel because as I was tracking my order in the app I noticed that the restaurant was showing closed but, luckily online it was showing that the restaurant was still open for business. I had placed my order at about 7:30pm and didn't receive it until about 9:20pm. Given that, I'll say third party delivery timeliness for this restaurant is subpar. This is true especially since the restaurant was a 10 min drive away from my delivery location. An hour is expected but, almost two hours is unreasonable. So when I finally got my food it was delivered in a standard manner. The restaurant doesn't seem to be taking any special tamper proof steps for delivery orders I.e. stapling the bag shut or anything of that nature. During a pandemic, I think a restaurant should at least seal customers food. Many other restaurants are. Also, there were no utensils nor napkins in the bag as requested. Now for the food. I ordered Pad Sa Ew, Ped Pad Kha Prao Duck, Ped Gai Yud Sai, and Spring rolls. The three spring rolls were good. They had little glass noodles in them unlike any other spring roll I've had. The mushrooms inside were not cut up and dispersed throughout. It was just a mushroom thrown in the mix. So I had one spring roll with a mushroom on one end and none on the other. The sauce that came with the spring rolls was sweet. The peek gai yud sai come two to an order. It was my first time having stuffed chicken wings. They were good but, I wouldn't order them again. The stuffed wings had a nice crisp exterior and the stuffing was similar to the spring rolls, they too had the glass noodles in them. There was supposed to be crab in the stuffed wings. I didn't taste crab at all. Pad Sa Ew is my go to Thai order so I've had many from different restaurants . The pad sa ew order from Ruan Thai was good, not great. It was a bit oily but, not overly oily. They put a good amount of Chinese broccoli and meat in the dish. I would say I had a lot of stems in my dish, which I didn't find pleasant. Also, I loved that it was still hot when I got it. The portion was a great value, they made sure the container was full. The Pad Kha Prao Duck we ordered was supposed to be hot and spicy, it was neither. My boyfriend was very displeased because the duck temperature was not hot nor was it the least bit spicy. Why have customers select a heat level if it doesn't matter? The duck was also served with a side of white rice. Overall, I wouldn't order from Ruan Thai again. I think that their delivery service is not excellent and their food is mediocre. Although, Ruan Thai is not awful, I wouldn't recommend it. read more

We came here for a quick dinner. It's a very large space and there were patrons at two tables. They offer the expected dishes for a Thai restaurant. The service was very quick and the waitress was friendly. The food was, well, revolting. The Massaman curry was missing carrots and peanuts. The panang curry was passable. Another person in the group ordered a veggie soup that tasted like dish soap. The crowning glory was the drunken noodles two of us ordered. We quickly noticed the appearance was not like any drunken noodles we had ever seen before. There were some mushy tomatoes and mushy basil. Once we tasted it we immediately realized the basil was Italian and not Thai basil and the flavor profile was very similar to that of pizza. Then we tasted it again and determined the noodles had been cooked with ketchup. This was the single most disgusting meal I've had for as long as I can remember. Avoid. read more

What a great place for Thai! We recently hit them up for a lunch date and started with the yum watercress - crispy, salty, fishy, sour, and sweet. So awesome. We also had the stuffed angel wings, which I thought were only ok but the guy likes. For our entrees, we shared a chicken pad prik khing, with green beans and delicious red chili paste, and some spicy duck dish that I missed the name of. Stop perusing the menu and just get the pad prik khing - it is SO delicious. You cannot go wrong. The duck was also wonderful, spicy but not overwhelming, and it's deep fries goodness converted this not-so-much-of-a-duck fan. Eat here and enjoy yet another ethnic gem in Wheaton. Oh, as everybody mentions, the parking lot is a bitch. What they don't tell you is that there is ample street parking all over and it will cost you about a dollar for the time you spend eating all that awesome food. read more

Went there during the Covid-19 pandemic to get some take out dinner. Food was fast 10-15 mins for 2 dishes on the average. No complain with the service. Btw, I'm here to drop a secret menu alert! Crispy pork basil is my new fav. Same price as crispy pork prik khing but not on the menu. You have to ask the waiter for it. If you're a fan of anything stir-fry basil and are looking for something new to try, this one is hands down a unique spin-off. Pork belly is cut into bite size, fried to perfect crispiness, coated with just the right amount of savory basil sauce and topped with crispy basil leaves. It's still so good even after a day in the fridge. Just reheat it in the toaster and it's as good as when it just came out of the restaurant. Seriously, I'm surprised this wasn't already on the menu. Came here from Baltimore because it was on the Thrillist article for the best 8 Thai restaurants in DC. I have mixed feelings. The red curry tofu was AMAZING. Maybe one of the best I have ever had. This was by far the saving grace for me. The curry was so creamy and flavorful with just the right amount of spice. I was blown away! That being said, I was disappointed in the drunken noodles. I should have read other people's reviews first because their noodles are tomato based- not like all the other types I have had. It tasted more like pasta than anything else. We had the waiter take it back and he said they make it with ketchup! That really grossed me out even more. However they did give us half off the price since we didn't like the taste which was very kind of them. If you are expecting the classic drunken noodle, definitely do not order this- you will be very disappointed! Came here for dinner on a Sunday night an hour before closing. Seated promptly, not too crowded, decent service minus waiters being a little slow to check on us after our meal since they were in a rush to get out and cleaning up (understandable). Tried the drunken noodles with beef which normally get three pepper symbols for spice level but asked for it mild which they gladly accommodated. I have been to Ruan Thai many times. One of my favorite EAT IN restaurants. I have had a few issues with to go orders. I left an updated review in 2019 about the lunch carryout being small / snack sized portions. Yet inside everyone seemed to have full plates of food. This time when I got carry out they forgot to include the protein?!? I got home and had vegetables and noodles. Tasty, but not what I paid for. That's 3 strikes. Not sure I'll be back... The best Thai in the area. I've tried about 5 different Thai places in the Silver Spring/Wheaton area and keep coming back here. Everything I've ordered has been delicious. There was one time, I found a piece of plastic in my rice. I called them to let them know and they gave me a credit to use on a meal the next time. And the chicken? If it really is chicken, it's just disgusting. The "meet "was dry with an extremely unpleasant texture that reminded me of dog food. Ruan used to be my favorite Thai restaurant but it's not the same place it used to be. I'll start with the positive, Yum Watercress is delicious and uniquely theirs and never disappoints! The Tom Kha soup used to be the best I had and now it's still creamy but flavorless. My biggest disappointment was the Beef Ka Prao, it was virtually inedible. I'm not one to leave bad reviews but I spent a good amount of money and wish I had known what to expect. My wish is that they return to the wonderful food we always enjoyed before. read more

I was so excited to check out Ruan Thai Restaurant as I've never been there before, and what better way to try a new restaurant while celebrating Mike B.'s cumpleanos!!! :D We had a large group that was seated in the back, and the staff were oh-so-friendly and quite attentive to our party :D The menu was quite extensive, offering appetizers (skewers, dumplings, fried tofu skin, etc.), soup, salads, stir-fry entrees, duck/chicken/pork/beef/seafood entrees, curry, rice & noodle dishes, and vegetarian options. We started off with some Thai Iced Tea and some appetizers: Curry Puffs (comes with 2; stuffed with potato and chicken, served with a cucumber salad; these were just okay, as they were quite starchy and tasted like they had taro in it), Larb (minced chicken, beef, or pork, we got 1 one of each; the meats were tossed with cilantro, red onion, scallion, topped with roasted rice powder, and covered in a lime dressing; I wished there were lettuce or butter lettuce cups to eat these as wraps), and, Yum Watercress (deep-fried watercress, battered shrimp and squid, red onions, shallot, cashew, all in a lime dressing; OMG, this was literally one of the best things I've tried that night - the dish had lovely battered watercress (kind of in a clump, so just spread it apart), had little fried shrimp and squid pieces, and raw onions and shallots, whole cashew nuts, all covered in this tangy/refreshing lime dressing - it was light and delicious!). For entrees, each person ordered a dish, and we sampled it all, family-style: Pad Khao Prao (choice of meat (beef) in hot chili, bell peppers, and basil leaves - this was pretty spicy, and the sauce was a little too watery for my taste); Ped Pad Kha Prao (stir-fried boneless duck with hot chili and fresh basil leaves - another favorite of the night! The duck was so tender and juicy, and the sauce was amazingly savory and thick and yummy - could have eaten 5 of these!); Mooh Cook Foon (grilled charcoal pork served with a Thai spicy sauce; another favorite of the night! This had a lovely bbq-charcoal-y taste, and the sauce isn't even needed!); Ped Tod Kob (fried crispy duck with house special brown sauce on the side; the duck was a little dry, even for my liking, and I didn't feel as if the brown sauce complemented it well); Kao Pad (fried rice with chicken, egg, onion, tomato, and scallions; this was your typical Thai fried rice); Scallop Pad Thai, Chicken Pad See Ewe (they ran out of the wide rice noodles, so they had to substitute it with the thin rice noodles; I thought the noodle dishes could have been more al dente and have a little bit more sauce! I did appreciate in them using Chinese broccoli - mmm!); Chicken Kee Mao (aka Drunken Noodles); Pad Ma Keau (stir-fried eggplant sauteed with chili paste); Chicken Panang (it was extremely watery, so I wasn't a fan); and, I believe, How Mok Talay (which was a baked seafood combination (in a clay platter) in red curry sauce and coconut milk; the seafood was succulent, and the sauce was creamy and had a nice kick to it). Overall, I definitely had favorite dishes of the night, and we all left stuffed - definitely a lovely fun night!!!
