The restaurant has an industrial look to it, with lots of concrete. Most of the seating are either booths up against one wall and stools at the sushi bar. There were TVs showcasing sports, and the music was of the loud club variety. I think they're trying for a hip atmosphere, but I found it all quite cold and odd. Service was fairly attentive. Food came out a bit slow. The husband and I split the fried brussels sprouts, chirashi bowl, and Girlfriend roll. The brussels sprouts was a pretty large portion. The chirashi bowl is an excellent deal and perfect for sharing if you want to try a variety of sashimi but don't want the gigantic boat. Most of the fish was fresh, but a few items, including the fish roe, were less so. The girlfriend roll was decent. So so, it does the job of yours hungry. The food isn't tasty, it's just filling. There are lots of options- frankly too many. All of which were described as "popular" by the waiter who had never tried any of it. The sushi didn't taste like much, spicy edamame was drizzled in a spicy powder which wasn't really spicy. The evening started off decent. Our group RSVP'd and our table was ready. There was 7 of us and they provided us only two menus, no QR code for a digital was available. We received our apps promptly. It was downhill after that. Our entrees came at various times, so some of our group attempted to wait for everyone else to receive their meals. The wait was so long people had to eat. Groups who came in after us received their orders before us. I placed a takeout order for my family at 7:28 pm. My friends waited with me, not to leave me behind. They brought me the to go order 55 minutes later, and it was wrong. The gratuity was automatically added. Automatically charging gratuity and the orders was wrong?!?! REALLY. When I brought this to the Manager's attention instead of being accountable he was dismissive and made excuses. Refused to do anything for having the order wrong or the inconvenience of my friends. I chose the kiss of fire roll and the crazy horse roll. The crazy horse roll was so much rice. It resulted in the roll being too big. The fish tasted not so fresh. One of Charlotte's longest standing Sushi spots, Ru San's has been around long before the sushi "craze." Despite their longevity, this was my first visit. I wasn't overly wowed, but it also wasn't horrible. It was pretty average to me. The parking fills quickly and there are a lot of compact car spaces. Seating is limited, as the restaurant is small compared to other Charlotte sushi spots. There are a few tables outside on the sidewalk, but not many. Additional seating is available at the bar as well. The menu offers a good variety of sushi options, as well as other entrees. The pork dumpling appetizer was amazing. My sushi was just okay, as was a bite I took of my friend's teriyaki steak. Our server was pleasant and the place was generally clean. The prices were so reasonable I wondered how they did it. For the cons- they just kept bringing out our 3 tops food whenever they felt. 2 of us had our meals almost finished before one of us even got it. It is also VERY loud in there. The booths are extremely tiny and uncomfortable and the bathroom is disgustingly dirty. I saw into the kitchen and it looked like crud had been build up in there for months. I absolutely loved the variety of the menu but I am not a fan of reading menus off of my phone. Especially those that are that huge. Service was just not good. First time having a negative experience! Typically Friday nights are slammed, and no so much this time (sign??). First ordered tempura mushrooms and calamari. They brought crispy calamari, which was incorrect. Then when we ordered our sashimi, the piece count that arrived was incorrect (even though it was delicious). And then the rolls we ordered didn't have all the ingredients on them, we told the sushi chef and he pulled out a jar of salsa and handed it to us. I was so disappointed. Me and my sister ordered the Shrimp Gyoza, Salmon Tempura , Tuna Bomb Sushi Roll, Tempura Japanese Bagel Roll and the Yakisoba Vegetable Noodles. My sister said the tuna bomb sushi roll was great. That was the only great item of everything we ordered. The yakisoba wasn't even yakisoba noodles. It was the wrong noodles. It was completely flavorless. There was no sauce with it. Just vegetables and boiled noodles sitting in water. Yakisoba is a stir-fried noodle. It was not stir-fried. They boiled those noodles and they were huge, no the yakisoba size. The vegetables were steamed with no salt or anything.The whole dish was sitting in a pool of water. It was absolutely disgusting. I took one bite and threw it away. The Japanese bagel roll wasn't disgusting but it wasn't good. It was pretty bland. I asked them to put the eel sauce on the side and they didn't even though it literally written in the receipt attached to the bag. I placed an order online to pick up. I walked in to pick it up and there was no one at the host station so I had to walk around to find the desk. I found the desk and one man was taking a phone order but 3 other people were just standing next to the desk, talking. I'm looking at them and they're looking at me and then just continue to have their conversation. Another woman comes up behind me and is also waiting for her to-go order and same situation. Eventually one of them to come over and assist us in picking up our orders but the rest just continued talking like we didn't even exist. Overall, with the exception of the tuna bomb sushi roll, the food was terrible and expensive. The service was terrible. Worst $50 I ever spent. Super disappointed. With all of the great reviews, I thought we'd find a great restaurant to add to our list of regular restaurants and to add to our Airbnb guide book. Guess we'll keep looking. read more

Cool vibes and great sushi. The spring rolls were was creative and not your average spring roll. It was wrapped in thinly sliced fish with cucumbers, avocado, and a crab mixture. The jalapeño roll had deep fried squares of rice and that was a unique texture. Lastly, the udon. The broth was rich, the fish cake and tempura shrimp were nice additions. It also had tofu? I think. YYAAAAASSS!! I'm so excited to see an affordable and delicious sushi place with unique offerings. Our eyes were bigger than our stomach... we ordered ramen, a "super power builder", a curry and teriyaki rice balls. I was so excited to see such a varied menu with ramen and stir-fried noodles. This is my dream place. Everything was bigger than expected. The ramen was in a big bowl, the "super power builder" had 2 appetizer sides of like tuna and salmon tartar, and the rice balls were exactly 3 times bigger than we had thought they would be. And so our journey began. The rice balls came out first. They were $2.75 a piece and for some reason my partner and I were thinking they'd be the size of truffle balls, instead of an extra big onigiri. They were fried and had a good ladle-full of sauce spread over them. The sauce was good - especially the curry. I was kind of expecting the darker brown japanese curry, but it was more like a coconut thai-inspired curry. Some might think this rice ball is plain, but my partner and I are really big fans of rice sooo it worked out. The Tokyo Shoyu Ramen was so-so. It didn't have the depth of umami in the broth or pork that I have come to admire in a really good bowl. It didn't have the boiled egg, but it did have some vegetables that were nice to see in a ramen. The Super Power Builder sushi plate was phenomenal. The crab cake was good. It wasn't cheaply filled with bread crumbs like I have seen at some seafood places, which is usually disappointing. All of the rolls were well made and fresh. But I was super impressed with the Ahi-Poki Tuna and Salmon Aioli Sashimi - I didn't know what to expect with these items. I just thought it'd be a few sashimi pieces, but they were nicely dressed pieces of sashimi atop a crispy cracker. Delicious. Overall - I would HIGHLY recommend. The sushi was fun and high quality. We've done the classic California roll, pickled radish and the spicy tuna along with the specialty Gone with the Wind. The specialty Gone with The Wind will probably be a fan favorite for some time. It's a three in one giant disc that is a mouthy watering sensation. The rice Ball was okay... and that can also be said for the yakitori. Skip them and just dive into another roll or two. The restaurant is loud and busy during dinner. It's not the type of date night for something romantic. You might be able to find a corner but generally speaking it's loud. New favorite go-to place for yummy, and cheap,, sushi! I first came here for a friend's birthday dinner and have been craving the sushi and prices since then! Ru San's is located in a strip mall off park road with a large parking lot with plenty of parking! The inside doesn't look too large, but has larger tables hidden toward the back for larger groups. I ordered the Sweet potato, Caterpillar roll, salad, philly roll, and dynamite roll thinking they would be half sizes/needing more to satisfy my sushi needs because they were cheaper than other rolls. I was wrong and has way too much food to eat! Y'all these are FULL SIZED ROLLS! My favorite roll was the dynamite roll, it was a little spicy, but the good kind of spicy! I will definately be back for the prices alone! Highly recommend Ru San's to everyone who enjoys sushi. As time goes by, I get progressively more disoriented by the notion of "sushi" in this country. At least in non-coastal areas, it gets more and more Americanized, and the focus is always retreating from fresh seafood and simplicity and clarity and shifting instead to ludicrous, over-the-top, and often gross combinations of junk food and squirted-on goop. The latter doesn't even connote "sushi" in my brain, but then I'm getting frigging old. Still, the brother and I wanted some sushi when I was visiting him in Charlotte, and I saw that there was a Ru San's. Ru San's is hardly "traditional," but the original location in Atlanta was one of the first few sushi places I ever visited with any regularity, a quarter century or so ago. And it was the first I went to that offered up that SoCal Americanized angle--a contrast to the serene, dignified atmosphere of traditional Japanese restaurants, which were more plentiful back then--although it also had the more traditional sushi, too. Whoever owns these Ru San's locations these days (no idea), this one's still not at all unlike what I remember from the '90s. (By 2019 standards, the atmosphere is a bit more sedate than the average party scene at some 2010s "sushi" places, but lively and engaging enough. There's an attractive and lengthy U-shaped sushi bar in the middle.) The menu is huge and ought to have something to please just about anybody, including me. We ordered up some standard nigiri--tuna, salmon, yellowtail, sea urchin, mackerel--and a few old-school Americanized rolls like spicy tuna and a rainbow roll (and maybe one other). Everything was quite good, except for the uni and mackerel; the uni seemed a bit muddy (that product needs to be super fresh), and the mackerel was a bit dried-out and fishy. Reasonably priced, too: Around 60 bucks for a decent amount of mostly agreeable sushi, a couple of seaweed salads, and a couple of beers. (In my current town, 60 bucks would buy you only trash if you ordered the same amount of sushi.) In this day and age, I know that you can do a hell of a lot worse with "sushi" than this Ru San's location. Nice job. read more
