Over the years while driving to and from Lost Wages we would often stop in Barstow to grab a bite to eat, but it has always been either fast food (rare) or more likely Mega Tom's. This time on our return I wanted something different and Yelp led us to Roy's Cafe; and the wife agreed. Roy's is located about 1 mile off the freeway and in a part of town (near downtown) that we had never ventured through, which added to the experience in itself. We are both so glad we did and this will be our primary stop from this day forward. I ordered the Machaca plate and the wife ordered the Scrambled plate with a side of pancakes (she always has to have her pancakes when we are away from home). Both plates were loaded and VERY delicious! My Machaca plate came with rice and beans, as well as tortillas. I was asked if I desired any salsa and jumped at the chance when one of the offerings was green salsa Verde. The wife really liked her meal, but as noted is quite large and she took about half of it home. She really liked the pancakes, too. Not only were our meals delicious, but that salsa Verde was one of the BEST I have ever tasted. It was so good that I inquired about it. Not only was I informed that it is made in-house, which I had perceived, but they sold it too. I purchased a pint, took it home, indulged on some of it the following day, split up the remainder into two portions and froze it for future consumption. I told my brother in law about this place, so when they visit us they have a good eats place to stop if desired. read more

"Best breakfast burrito I've ever had"- James 9yo Great stop when driving to or from Vegas! read more

The food was fair and the service was great. The reason for such a low rating is because they tried to overcharge us a little over $10.00. They charged more than what the menu quoted, they added tax onto each item (written in beside the charge), then they added more tax on the total. When we pointed out their mistake they tried to argue that the higher price was because we were paying with credit card, we were paying cash. Needless to say, we had them add everything according to the menu, then add the tax, and it came out a little over $10.00 more that they were charging us. If they would have just said it was an honest mistake I wouldn't be writing this, but they threw such a stink I have to say make sure you check your receipt. read more

The appearance and ambience are cute, 1950s - 60s diner. There is so much Decor to look at that you could spend two or three visits looking at the details , movie posters , etc. The breakfast that I had was acceptable if not outstanding . The one fall back was that the service that I got was pretty lackluster . The server decided that she had to chat with a couple who wanted their picture taken over and over and over, and it was probably 15 minutes before I got my water and tea . So overall an average experience which might be improved on another visit. read more

Went there for Breakfast food was good portion was real small i ordered quilaquiles and i got a handful of chips only reason im giving 4 stars is because the sauce was good read more

A bit over priced , the food could have been a lot better , although the folks were really nice .

Roy's Cafe certainly promotes its influences from Amboy CA, and that's good. The ambience is retro and the service is friendly. There are numerous menu choices and the food is good quality. I enjoyed a delicious cheeseburger smothered in chili accompanied by a side of golden crinkle fries. Upon request, the kitchen even grilled a whole jalapeño for me! To top off my meal, I chose a smooth Oreo cookie shake for desert. The other customers around me were friendly, too! read more

Located in the heart of historic downtown Barstow, right on Route 66, this little diner is a gem. It's not especially dressed up or themed, but if you want a happy, full stomach, this is the place for you in Barstow. Our server was Angi, and I loved her laid-back, joking manner. She didn't have that stereotypical manner many servers do, with their "What can I get ya, Sweetie" and "How was it, Honey?" comments. We were very happy with our meals, even though the kitchen didn't lettuce-wrap my burger as I had requested. I heard her tell them they had made a mistake and they apologized. She offered to replace it or bring more lettuce, but the side salad I had ordered was so big I had PLENTY of lettuce and didn't need more. I just put the bun to the side and used a knife and fork to eat the burger. Everything else was as ordered and delicious! We will return when in town again. I want to try their strawberry milkshake! It looked wonderful. read more

Absolutely love this place! Anytime my family and I are in the area to and from Vegas we HAVE TO stop by! Food is amazing. Everything that we have gotten has been 10/10! Service is great, they are fast and really nice. Evelyn always helps us out and she is a sweetheart. Fresh pineapple juice is always my go to! Very family friendly and anyone we have brought has only said great things about it. Always our go to when we pass. Love it here! We have made it a tradition to stop when we are going to Vegas and back home. read more

I was a regular at Roys café in Las Vegas. Regrettably they closed down sometime ago. So, since then I've never been able to enjoy there delectable Chorizo breakfast burrito that I fell in love with oh so long ago. That is until I found out that they have another location located in Barstow California. So of course I had to make a pitstop on my road trip to Cali. If you're ever in this part of town in Barstow where Roy's Café is located for the purpose of sightseeing. I gotta say you'll be extremely disappointing in the small, quaint, dusty city of Barstow. But if you're just passing through just to stop at Roys Café for a nice bite to eat. You'll be pleasantly satisfied. read more

Super cute. Very clean, friendly, family environment. The place looks small but seats a good number. Do yourself a favor: If you're having breakfast, order the loaded hash browns. Ask for your sausage on the side because you might not find it all if it's mixed in with the hash browns, peppers, onions, etc. Add an egg on top and that's pretty much a perfect breakfast. Also - obviously - it's in a super cute part of Barstow. So you can get your kicks right there on Route 66! read more

Yelp has once again steered us to a great place! I had the carnitas fajita quesadilla and it was one of the best & tastiest quesadillas I've ever had - and it was huge, literally covered the whole plate & was stuffed. So good!! My girlfriend had the double cheeseburger and it too was off the hook with flavor & size. She also got the mashed potatoes and cream gravy and they are real and homemade - absolute delicious. This place is definitely worth the 5 min drive off the 15 if you want a delicious meal! read more

We happened upon this place because we broke down and our car is being fixed up the road. Here for breakfast. Not crowded at all for a Mother's Day. I ordered machaca and eggs. Hubs ordered ham and eggs. With pancakes. You will not go hungry here. The machaca had good flavor. Had some jalapeños. I would have them leave them out but still very delish. The ham steak was a good portion and flavorful. Instead of just toast you have the option of biscuits and gravy or pancakes. They have a pic of street tacos in the window. I want to come back and try those. read more

Portion and price beat your chain breakfast restaurants (Better than Dennys or IHOP) We be back for Street Tacos and dessert on our next trip through Barstow. read more

Don't let the way it looks on the outside scare you away. We pulled up and almost drove away thinking Yelpers were crazy. The food was delicious and cooked perfectly! The hamburger patties are handmade and not the pre-made frozen patties. The lettuce on my burger was nice and crisp and the tomato was so delicious(I usually don't eat the tomato slice). They put red onion on the burgers which might throw you off if you are used to the white onion taste. My sister ordered the Denver Omelette with a side of pancakes at no extra cost!!! She almost bit off my finger while taking a picture of her food because of how good it smelled and looked. The waitress was friendly and very attentive. I'm glad we stopped on our way from Vegas it's about a 1.5 mi from the fwy exit but definitely worth driving out to. read more

Stop here for a great meal in Barstow! We arrived here later than the Yelp menus suggest that breakfast is available, however, the server said breakfast was no problem and we could order whatever we liked! First of all, the menu has a lot to offer. They advertise "best burger in town," but there was so much else we all chose a non burger item. I had the machaca con huevo with rice, beans and tortillas which was quite good and my partner ordered a club sandwich with fries. The portions are large so come ready to eat! Drinks come in a quart jar and my buddy must've had 3 russets cut into crisp crinkle fries on his plate! The service was exceptionally friendly here and I will totally return when in Barstow, you should too! read more

Roy's Cafe has a few locations, and one is located in Barstow. It has a classic 1950s diner look. The tables are covered in red and white checkered tableclothes. Music played is mostly classic oldies. The food portions are large but expensive though. It only has one cocktail. It's a michelada, which is kind of like a Mexican version of a Bloody Mary. This is $8 for a large jar full, which is okay because it really is a lot to drink for that much. It's made with a choice of beer. The obvious choice is Corona. It also has a few other Mexican beers. This is mixed with lime juice, spices, and tomato juice. It was better than the food. The food menu is mostly greasy and meaty. I had the vegetable burger. It's about $10 and comes with fries or a salad. The burger comes with thousand island dressing but I got it with mustard instead of that. It's a good restaurant for being in Barstow. It's much better than fast food. The service is actually pretty fast though. read more

Amazing food, amazing service, very comfortable and unique. All the food came out in good time and was delicious.

This is one of those don't judge a book by its cover situations- from the outside we wondered if the cafe was still open for business- had an abandoned feel to it- maybe because it was early and we were the first customers- thought we'd still give it a try and were pleasantly surprised and glad we did. Good attentive service. Clean. Food was reasonably priced and portions were generous and the flavor was really good.,My husband said it was the fluffiest omelette he's had. Food had an authentic homemade quality. Large parking lot. Extra fee if paying with card. Aesthetically could use some tlc but would return for a meal- food was delicious. read more

We live about 2 hours from here. Found the place passing through. The food and service were beyond amazing! It was so good we stopped on our way back. It was decided that we would make the drive again just for the food. First stop we had a mix of breakfast and lunch. The eggs were magazine cover perfect and the pancakes were delicious. The burgers were juicy and flavorful. On the way back we all had lunch. I ordered the street tacos and a burrito. I have to say that I don't normally pay more than $2 for street tacos and they are $3 there but I ordered anyway. I would happily pay 3 for them any day and twice on Sunday. Fantastic! The burrito had been to flavor town and it showed! It was probably big enough to feed two or three people, or one of me. (I like to eat.). The waitress was also beyond amazing. She took great care of us. Everyone in our party of 5 agreed that this will be our stopping place anytime we pass through or just want to get away. Bottom line, I can't see that this place would disappoint anyone except that one person who "has to" find something to complain about everywhere they go. read more
