Brunch is my absolute fav meal of the day. It's best to get it started in a healthy way, and the Red Hen cafe does just that: with the garden skillet. Loved it! Potatoes, veges, and some egg. Thanks for the vegetarian options! Love it. :) The hubby and I decided to try it one autumn morning here in Helendale, down the street and it doesn't disappoint. It's close enough to leave the doggos home and head out for a hearty meal. The service was friendly and excellent! Coffee served quickly and my steaming hot tea as well. Ready to try another yummy item on the menu soon! Thanks for the great service, cozy, rustic atmosphere, and yummy foods. Will return shortly!

Great out of the way place on the famous route 66 and the food was quite good. Not sure of the hours so I would check it site, but I do not believe they're open for dinner.

Homemade Comfort and Hospitality on Route 66 The Red Hen in Helendale is a five-star experience through and through. I had scrambled eggs with hashbrowns and a side of biscuit and gravy--and every bite tasted homemade. The eggs were fluffy, the hashbrowns crispy, and the biscuit and gravy? Next level. Unlike other places that hide a dry, stale biscuit under heavy gravy, The Red Hen serves moist, perfectly layered biscuits that stand on their own. The gravy complements rather than covers--it's comfort food done right. Service was just as impressive: coffee came out before the meal, and they brought a warmer as my food arrived. Thoughtful touches, great food, and a cozy atmosphere make this place a must-stop.

My niece and her husband and myself stopped here today. On our way to Las Vegas for elite breakfast early lunch. We love the fact that it's on route 66 and it is nicely decorated with the farm motif. Although the place was packed, the service was friendly and professional, and the food came out in a timely manner. My niece and her husband had breakfast. I had a bacon cheeseburger. It was cooked perfectly as were the french fries. My niece and her husband enjoyed the omelette and breakfast items they had. They were especially pleased with the banana bread. I wish this place was closer and open longer hours as I would frequent it very often definitely enjoyed our food and experience at the red hen café. Highly recommend stopping here if you are in the area.

So this was quite the gem....delicious comfort food made with love for sure...we had a hobo skillet, chicken and freshly made waffles airy on the inside and a soft crunch on the outside...chicken had flavorful gravy and mushrooms on top of a plump juicy crispy chicken fried chicken ..best I've ever had...we had a cinnamon roll French toast like no other in all the land! We even bought pancakes and a breakfast burrito to go..(for later) and of course we boxed up some as well...the friendliest owners ever..we plan on returning to this amazing place! It felt like home ..vibe was like being at grandmas house...service was spot on...

This is a cute cafe on Route 66. I remember this used to be a Molly Brown's restaurant. Now it has been updated in a cheerful red paint. It is a nice drive to the cafe especially if one is headed to Barstow. The menu has many items to choose from. I had the Paul Bunyan because I wanted to try all the breakfast meats plus eggs and home fries. The home fries had a delicious perfect ratio of green peppers and onions to potatoes. I had the eggs scrambled and they were also delicious with a good flavor. The meal came with a choice of either pancakes or French toast. I chose pancakes. There were two and both were very tall and fluffy with crispy edges. The breakfast meats consisted of a bone-in ham steak, two link sausages, and two thick slices of bacon. I really enjoyed the ham which was tender and very flavorful without being too salty. All in all, I had an excellent breakfast and experience at The Red Hen Cafe. The waitstaff were friendly and efficient. There is also ample parking in the lot. A definite return in the future to this place will be planned.

Very good home-cooked food very accepting atmosphere of staff.‍ you know it's a small town country vibes. That's how it is though so welcome to America....

Great food, kind service and a hometown feel. Makes you feel like you went home to visit your folks on the old farm. Coffee was pretty decent. There was an old man whom I overheard at the register. His card ended up declining and the lady was so sweet and said he could come back and take care of it the next day. He was an obvious regular but you sure don't run into that anymore. Just had that old town feel. Sweet little spot off old Route 66.

Everything about this place is excellent. Food, Service and Atmosphere! The staff are attentive to their customers and always go over and beyond with their service.

This restaurant was a one and done. I ordered a small drink off the kids menu. I asked if it was ok because kids menu specified 12 and under. The young man said it was fine. When the waitress came to take our order, she sa my drink and asked if they brought that out to me, I said yes. She said adults could not order off the kids menu then said the young man might not have know. I told her I hope he doesn't get in trouble. She said he would not and that she was only telling me in case next time i ordered a kids drink that I might be told no. I thanked her. I did she her tell some other lady working there as they both looked over at our table. After our "eh" meal we could have made better at home, we got the check. I was charged for a regular drink, not a kids. I asked the young man if I could get a lemonade refill to go, he said he had to ask...his boss I guess it was. I think he was new. Lady comes over, I mentioned I got charged for a regular drink when I ordered a small. She said yes because I wasn't allowed to order off the kids menu. Had the FIRST lady not said it was ok, I would have asked her to take the drink back. I could only drink 2-3 sips, I didn't want to pay for a large drink. I didn't want to get into a whole conversation about it with lady #2. I asked for a lemonade refill. It came out in a regular sized cuff. There was no misunderstanding. I think it was a BS decisions by lady #2, ESPECIALLY when two of her employees had already told me it was OK. Food looked nice and but was "eh". For lackluster food, not worth coming back. It's a cute little spot but not worth returning.

My job takes me everywhere and I'm glad it took me here. Cozy little cafe right off Route 66. Friendly staff and amazing food. They don't hold back on their servings. I left there full and happy. I ordered their chicken apple sausage which I've never eaten. So delicious and fresh. Also enjoyed their home fries. I really did enjoy my experience.

Worth the stop. The food was as good as the service. Tight parking for a 40' trailer, but doable.

The service was exemplary. The food was great, and it was a great overall dining experience. I get everybody has a bad or off day. And in this case Black Bear Diner made it right. Which in this day and age of throw away customers and compliments means a lot. I will definitely be coming back to this. Black Bear Diner and I have upgraded my review to a solid 4! Wow. That was underwhelming. I like Black Bear diner, I've been going to them for a long time, and as I was heading back to Las Vegas I thought I would stop here and grab a bite to eat as I have always had a great experience there. Well this time, it was an exception to the rule. It was busy so I was not too concerned about the wait time, which was minimal, and they got me seated pretty quickly. Quickly. I like the little newspaper style menus as they were fun to look at and interesting to read while you waited for your server. I already knew I was going to get the mini volcano, as it just sounded like the perfect combination of stuff for me to eat for breakfast. The waitress came by, really didn't look at me, which was odd. And went back to put it in. She came back with my coffee and said the order was in. Should only be a moment. This was great news cuz I was ready to eat and get back on the road. The food came to the table and it looked appetizing enough, they had the two pancakes and my fried egg on top and a piece of bacon and a link of sausage. Flanking the pancakes with a nice garnish of an orange slice on a lettuce bed. Here's the problem. Everything was lukewarm now it did come out pretty fast which was surprising to me that it wasn't really hot. But literally everything on the plate felt like it was sitting in a dish in the back with a warmer waiting just to be built. The pancakes there are usually really good this time. They were terrible. I was very very sad about this cuz I really like their pancakes a lot. The egg was cooked well but again it was lukewarm at best. Same with the sausage and the bacon. The sadder thing was the flavor just wasn't there. Normally they have some personality to it, but these felt contrived and run of the mill. Now. I don't know if they, like Everyone else is having to downgrade and downsize because of the cost of everything, but whatever it was it was not working for me. Again, I will say that I like Black Bear Diners but the one in Barstow I will be avoiding every time I drive through. This is sad, and I hope that someone in corporate reads this because it would be great to have this restaurant be top notch when you're driving between Orange county and Las Vegas or vice versa. Bottom line? I seriously doubt that I'll ever come back here. Which is a bummer, because I am a big fan of this particular chain. There are plenty of other great eating establishments in the Barstow area. So this one I would kind of drive past. ************* Response to Black Bear Diner Corporate Thank you for your heartfelt response. In fact, it was one of the nicest chat GPT responses I've read this week. At least you got my name in there which was a nice touch and made it feel more personal, however, when you forget to put your email in there for me to respond to, that leads me to believe you really don't care. Thank you for the response albeit a very perfunctory one.

The atmosphere is cozy it has that warm, comfort-food vibe that just makes you relax and enjoy your time. The food definitely delivers on that "home-style" promise. We ordered a variety of dishes: the country fried steak skillet, the hobo skillet, and the chicken fried steak--all hearty, flavorful, and satisfying. I went with the cinnamon French toast, and for just $4.49 extra, it came with eggs and a choice of sausage or bacon (I picked sausage). Everything was absolutely delicious. Portion sizes are generous--we couldn't finish everything and ended up taking boxes home, which honestly just means we get to enjoy it again later for brunch! This is a perfect stop if you're traveling along the I-15--especially for road trippers or truck drivers looking for a solid, comforting meal.
