Not a lot of options when you are traveling through this isolated part of the desert, but it is one of the best choices. The Chef salad with garlic bread is one of the best! I am dissapointed to recently discover that my favorite item the open faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and cranberry is no longer served. I am still salivating from writing that, LOL. I love that they restaurant has a cozy side and a full bar side. I decided one year to celebrate my birthday here instead of celebrating my birthday where I live in West Hollywood. This is a decent place to stop while traveling up the 395 Hwy. The food was good, the service was FANTASTIC, we enjoyed sitting in the back bar area which my coworker mentioned was renovated about a year ago. I had the Southwest omelet and it was pretty good. This probably wasn't the Roadhouse Jim Morrison was singing about in The Doors classic rock song, Roadhouse Blues, but who knows? I will tell you what I know about this place, though. It's my favorite stop on my frequent road trips to Las Vegas. I've been a loyal customer for nigh on to twenty years. Highway 58 used to take you right to the front door. But ever since they "improved" Highway 58, most trafiic whizzes by this cool little restaurant. You practically can't even see it from the highway now. So what makes this my favorite place to stop on my journeys across the desert? First off, this place is a like a big slice of American Pie. It has that old school diner vibe, with cozy booths and also counter seating. The waitresses are almost my favorite part of each visit. I just love those wonderful ladies! The waitresses here look the part, too. The whole restaurant looks like something from a Hollywood movie. The waitresses look they were sent from Central Casting. But they're not actors, they're the Real Deal. Now, in case you've never worked in a restaurant, let me tell you, it's gruelling work. Sometimes the waitresses here might seem a little curt or less friendly than you might expect. You need to have a little perspective, OK? If you're going to be the kind of customer that gets offended because you weren't greeted immediately and fawned over, get over yourself. Yeah, sometimes you have to seat yourself. Big whoop. Let me also add that the restrooms are dated, but in good repair and always very clean. There aren't that many places to stop between Mojave and Barstow, and more than once this place has saved me from an unspeakable fate. I have had many meals here. To be perfectly honest, some were good, some not so good. It all seems to come down to what you order. I have a peculiar knack for ordering the wrong thing, so I'm not going to give you any insight about what to order. But reading other reviews will give you more information about what's good on the menu, meal wise. What makes this a Must Stop Here place for me are the empanadas. Oh my god, you have to try these empanadas! They make two kinds, apple and pineapple. The apple empanadas are very good. But the pineapple empanadas absolutely kick ass. The pastry is so tender, so flaky. The dusting of cinnamon sugar on top gives the empanada a little bit of a crunch. And the pineapple filling is just the right combination of sweet and tart. In addition to the empanadas, there are a lot of other very attractive pastries in the little case next to the register. I always say, someday I'm going to try this one or that one, but I never do. I'm true blue. I always, always get the pineapple! The secret is, they're made in house. There's a Mom or a Grandma back there in the kitchen making these magnificent empanadas by hand. Again, I'm talking about the Real Deal here! If you stop by and get your empanadas to go, like I usually do, you can ask for them to heat the empanadas up for you. They're a million times better heated than straight out of the pastry case, so don't forget to ask for them to warm them empanadas up! One last thing: we all know how important it is to support local, independent businesses, especially in these weird (almost) post-Covid times. If you find yourself on Highway 58, please stop in here and spend some dough. We simply can't afford to lose any more of these pieces of genuine Americana. I haven't been back here in years and on my way up to Big Pine recently, my stomach was telling me to pull over and get some sustenance. There are several choices to decide on for food around this intersection but I love the mom and pop style diner this place exudes. I ordered the double deluxe burger and fries and that was a meal large enough to entice me to take a nap in the car before heading back on the road. The two burger patties were juicy and the thick onion ring added crunch and additonal flavor to round out that hearty burger. The fries were also just to my liking; crispy but not overdone. Kramer Junction isn't really a town, as it's simply a collection of businesses that cater to highway travelers, clustered at the busy intersection of highways U.S. 395 and CA 58, in eastern Kern County, a few miles east of the small mining town of Boron, CA. You'll find gas stations, convienience stores, roadside stands, and a couple of fast food restaurants. Personally, I'll pass on the fast food restaurants, as I prefer to enjoy delicious truck stop diner cuisine at Roadhouse Restaurant, located at the 76 Gas Station. As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the bakery counter, along with the "Please Seat Yourself" sign. The bakery is co-located with the restaurant, so you'll be enjoying fresh pastries, pies and bread. The dining room is in an "L-shape," with the kitchen, counter, and booths to the left, with more booths to the right, and a semi-private large dining room, furnished with tables, straight ahead. Roadhouse Restaurant is very serious about breakfast, as breakfast is served any time the restaurant is open. I would imagine this is due to the fact the menu caters to trucker, and highway travelers, who are noted for enjoying a fine breakfast at any hour. From the "Classic Egg Combos" of the "Breakfast Served All Day" menu, I went with "Sausage and Eggs." You get to choose between link or patty sausage, I went with link. Naturally, you get two eggs cooked any style; I went with eggs over easy. Your breakfast comes with hashbrown potatoes, fresh fruit or cottage cheese, and your side choices are biscuit and gravy, pancakes or toast. In my case, going with hashbrowns with the biscuit and gravy was an easy choice! Such a pretty presentation, with the slice of orange and sprig of parsley for enhancement! The mark of a good breakfast chef is when you order eggs fried over easy, they arrive ... over easy. My two eggs were cooked perfectly, as ordered. My three link sausages weren't anything special, but they were tasty and really made my breakfast great. You get A LOT of hashbrown potatoes, and my order of hashbrowns was cooked perfectly crispy and golden on the inside, and tender chewy on the inside. The hashbrowns were absolutely perfect, as they weren't salty or greasy, and were delicious. I loved the bowl of biscuit and gravy. A bakery is co-located with the restaurant, so the biscuit was fresh from the bakery, cut in halves, and topped with creamy, thick, country gravy, that features lots of chunks of sausage. The biscuit and gravy really "made" the breakfast, but I'm a sucker for biscuits and gravy, and order them as a side, anytime they're offered. A pot of coffee, along with "bottomless" mugs of coffee rounded out my fine breakfast. I really enjoyed my delicious breakfast, as the food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the price was very reasonable. Roadhouse Restaurant is definitely a diner, and a truck stop, but it's more than that, as it's a great restaurant to enjoy a fine meal when you're in the Mojave desert, a long ways from civilization. When you're traveling along CA 58, half way between the towns of Mojave and Barstow, and you're in the mood for delicious food, do what truckers, fifth-wheelers and those who love American "comfort food" do... stop at Roadhouse Restaurant and enjoy a delicious meal! read more
