It is always great when you revisit a restaurant after many years, and it is just as good as you remembered it. Roy's at Bonita Springs is one of the last of the chain. Our meal was great. First, the service was terrific. Everyone, from Andrew (the Manager) and Lisa (our server) to the food runners was friendly and helpful. They checked back on us repeatedly to make sure everything was great - but were not hovering. The food was exceptional. The Hibachi Salmon was the best we've ever had. My Butterfish was equally delightful. The Tuna Poke appetizer may have been the best thing we ate. The Sunrise at Haleakala Roll was as we remembered it. (The only thing that did not excel was the Pineapple Upside Down Cake - good, but not quite as it was). The restaurant is big, airy and comfortable. Tables are well spaced and the chairs comfortable. I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. I thought the food was delicious: I had their steak and lobster, which came with an incredible sauce, was cooked perfectly, and presentation was a winner. But the lobster was REALLY small... like maybe 2oz? I also had the lobster potstickers, which weren't "potstickers" by the traditional method but were in fact fried dumplings. They were great, but a little bit of a mis set expectation. My real problem with this restaurant is their bar area, which felt more like sitting at an old Applebees. There were really "top shelf" liquors, and the selection they had was underwhelming. My Manhattan was probably the worst one I've ever had... the glass wasn't chilled, there was too much vermouth, and the cherry was in pieces in my drink. I only mention all of this because the cocktail was $26.50 (before tip and tax), and I think for this price the value must be exceptional. My recommendation is to come for dinner and sit in the main dining room... rush past the bar area and don't take a second look! :-) Enjoy the wonderful selection of entrees and great flavors. read more

Had dinner at Roy's tonight. It never disappoints. I've eaten at Roy's all over the US - the food, service and ambience are always first class. Plus, for an upscale restaurant I believe their prices are quite reasonable. Tonight I had the seared blackened ahi tuna served with baby bok choy and furikake rice with a spicy mustard butter sauce. This place is not what it used to be. Butterfish has been changed to a fishy tasting piece of cod with herb sauce. It used to be served with a buttery miso sauce. Prices are way too high for the quality of food. My family and I used to live going here for special occasions. It's not so special any more. Second time here with my boyfriend, out of season. Live here full time and came in the summer time. Jose, the bartender (who took care of us the first visit) was more than great, again. He was attentive and our drinks were delicious. Happy to have this place and staff right across the street. Our first time dining at Roy's and found the experience to be good not great, considering the price point and what others have shared previously. Pros: - Great prix fixe options for the holiday, we opted to not go the traditional turkey route and maybe that was our mistake! - Chocolate Torte was very delish, well cooked, and balanced - Key Lime pie was light & tasty - Red potatoes & asparagus were perfectly cooked on the Mahi plate - Good portion sizes for all courses for the price and we left full - Adam was a very attentive, strong server - Filet was tender and cooked nicely (rare) Cons: - dirty water glasses upon sitting down and the kind waiter had to get 3 pitchers of water as when he poured the first few glasses, flies were in the water - mahi was over cooked and dry, lobster sauce lacked lobster flavor and the dish needed an acidic component - lobster potstickers were heavy and dense, needed acidic component - béarnaise (we think?) sauce was broken utop filet - no house bread or rolls (maybe a peasant ask but I love me some starter bread) Overall, we weren't overwhelmed with the meal! Food was pretty good but they desperately need more help. Folks they have were very nice and working their tears off. There's simply not enough for the number of people they're seating...and that's on Management. Our dinner lasted 3 hours and we waited 45 minutes to get the bill. The food was lovely and I would recommend this restaurant solely for that reason. The service, on the other hand, was noticeably lacking from the beginning. The one female bartender hardly gave us any service at all. On top of that, she made no effort to be personable and barely acknowledged us the whole time. The necessary skills of a good bartender are to be engaging and attentive but she was downright unfriendly. Didn't check in on our food, no water refills, no eye contact, walked past us multiple times and left us sitting at the bar with dirty plates, and had to call her or the other bartender over every time we needed service. How is this acceptable? The entire time she seemed too busy cleaning the bar and avoiding us, despite the bar being practically empty. I noticed they treated the few other bar patrons the same. I hope management is aware of this given that I saw the manager walk past the bar multiple times and some other reviews have echoed similar observations. We had been here a while ago and were not impressed to come back. We went last evening with a group and had a very good experience. The service and the food was excellent. I had a nice Oregon Pinot with my dinner for $16. Our table all started with salads. A nice sized portion and the various house dressings were enjoyed by all. The various main dishes were salmon, tiger shrimp and short rib. Everyone who had the fish dishes were very happy. The person who had the short ribs did not care for them. Went for a double birthday dinner last night and was not happy. Decided not to complain at the moment and waited to leave a review here. The wagyu sushi roll I got was good, i can say that. However when I got their famous butterfish, I noticed the piece of meat i got was the very tail end of the fish. It was a bit fishy tasting in some places and a lot of grey meat. I would expect for a fish dish that is over $50 to come with a premium fillet from the fish. Not the tail end that nobody wants. A few of my other friends said the same thing. I came here for a friend's birthday party. Roy's is one of his favorite restaurants. We had a large group and Roy's had two servers working with our group so service was extremely prompt and courteous. I started with an old fashioned it was made great not too sweet. The group ordered some appetizers for the table. But I really wanted to try the lobster bisque. The lobster bisque came out with a lobster in the bottom of the bowl and then they added the bisque at your table. Amazing! I ordered the jumbo tiger shrimp with udon noodles and fresh stir-fried vegetables. The shrimp were extremely large and the noodles were cooked great. This is my second time here but first time for dinner my suggestion would be is that you come for happy hour as you can get a good sample of the menu. For dessert I tried the Thai lime tart nice way to finish with a little port wine. I would truly recommend this place the food is very good and the service was very attentive. read more

Decided to take in Happy Hour prior to our dinner reservation- in true Florida fashion Happy Hour IS a dinner reservation and bar seats were completely full. Grabbed a high top- service was a bit slow, but to be expected at peak HH (5:45PM) Kept our 6:30 dinner reservation for the markedly quieter dining room. As always the service was attentive but not pushy. Menu was explained thoroughly. All fish dishes ordered were delicious and beautifully prepared. Roy's sauces are amazing counterparts to every dish. Prices on the upper side but so worth the dollar. I'm not understanding the recent one star Yelps. Disgruntled employee? However, we have ALWAYS had a problem with the remaining amount. No exceptions. We save all receipts but consistently come up short. They should be able to track all expenditures on the card. The lobster bisque was let's say a little "off". For $18.00, the serving was too small. The soup base didn't taste fresh, very spicy. Strange color. While the lobster was real it was only about two bite sized pieces. Sorry, but this was the worst meal I've had in many years. Driving home I felt sick. Our bill for 4 people was $ 304 for an appetizer, 3 lobster bisque soups and a bottle of wine. Insane. Time to rethink how these restaurants are run. Very sad. Roy's is one of my favorite restaurants in the Estero/Bonita area, if not my favorite. The quality of the food is absolutely amazing and they never cease to prepare the Chilean Sea Bass to perfection (I highly recommend the Bass). For an appetizer the Canoe is perfect taste of so many different flavors. and each person gets to try a little of everything. For dessert, this restaurant has the absolute BEST pineapple upside down cake that I have had in my entire life. Service is good, and the manager in particular always greets us with a smile at the door. The Promenade is beautiful to walk around after your dinner if you are looking to walk off your meal. Restaurant is generally chilly (so bring a sweater) but it is refreshing, especially if you go during the sticky Florida summer. read more

Updated review: Early Christmas Day dinner. Restaurant very busy. Manager did not return my 'hello', just a blank stare at me in my tux. Kylie, the hostess, was warm and welcoming as always, a true asset to the establishment. Seated at a round table in the corner by a window, great view of interior. Waiter was prompt with greeting and drink orders. I immediately noticed that my water glass had lip imprints on the rim- similar blemishes on my group's glasses. There was a food particle in my neighbor's water. It was a holiday so we didn't want to bother the busy waitstaff. Cocktails arrived, my Bloody Mary was great. Appetizers, the sushi roll was a generous size, a little spicy for me, but delicious. I had the steak entree with a side of lobster Mac and cheese. The steak was good, could only eat half, but the lobster Mac and cheese was totally bland (zero taste) and had the tiniest bit of lobster on top- don't have it on the menu if you aren't going to 'Wow' us... To conclude, my previous visit was fantastic, but I will not spend another holiday dinner at Roy's. Expectations are high and when things happen like food in the water, bland lobster Mac and cheese, an indifferent greeting at the door, the entire evening can be completely tarnished. Cheers? We made a reservation and came here on a Friday night, I figured it will be busy because it's pre Super Bowl/ pre Valentine's Day. Long story short, we got seated fairly quickly, they're understaffed however. Just the cocktail itself took forever to come, and so as our main entree. I understand it's a Friday night, but it's over 30 mins wait for our main entree to come. I wouldn't recommend this place during season. Also, it's super loud, I can't even hear the server nor she could hear me without shouting. Even talking to each other requires raising your voice for the other person to hear. The environment / ambience just different than what we used to at Roy's back then and different locations! Food wise, we got the sampler to start, it's amazing! For entree, we ordered the whole fried snapper and the Chilean sea bass. Ended the dinner with the red velvet cake as dessert! Thought it would be a somewhat quiet, fancier dinner turned into a super loud, and long waited dinner. We spent more time waiting for our food to come than consuming it. The food was good, not fantastic that I would spend that much time to wait for an entree. If you consider coming here for dinner, either come on weekdays or non-season times. Not only do we love the restaurant but the bar and sushi bar have become some of our favorites for a quicker service with still great food. Roy's has, sadly, become a shadow of its former self. We recently ate there for a special occasion. It was the third time we have celebrated an anniversary there in the last 10 years. I want to first say the service was excellent, I have no complaints in that area at all. The food however was a different story. The "butterfish" ( cod) was overcooked and overpowering in taste. I have had that dish before and it was light and flavorful. This was dry and fishy to the point of it being a bit past it's prime. The food is now heavy and relies on fat and salt for flavor. This is not the Roy's of old. Oh and before I sign off... The bread service is a joke and how y'all aren't embarrassed to serve it , I don't know. In all fairness it does day it's Hawaiian rolls. But I assumed, as it was Roys, they would do something to make it Roy's level.. nope . It literally looked. Like someone went to Publix, grabbed a bag of rolls, cut a few of them in half and threw them on a plate with some butter . I am not in any way exaggerating this. My husband and I are still cracking up over the absolute waste of money that was. I am not trying to be harsh, even though I am sure it reads that way, I am just hoping they make some changes and realize those changes need to be made.
