Why have I not reviewed Royal Mandarin?? My wife and I eat here a lot. It's very quiet and always very clean. Place the order at the counter. They will gladly help you understand what ingredients are involved in various dishes. Most items are pretty standard names. I usually get the "Royal with Fried Rice" and add an egg roll. It rather mild with chicken, beef, shrimp, and artificial crab. My wife gets some sort of pineapple rice that has peanuts on it. She really likes the tofu depending on her tastebuds. Egg rolls are perfect and skewered chicken is definitely a great choice. General Tso's use to be my go to, but it fills me up too much. It's very good but I've just had to back off. We go here probably on average every 20 days. Food is always very fresh. It's just really, really. We see some of the same people eating in there on a routine basis so you know it has a following. I won't give it a one star. The food was very disgusting. We didn't even finish our meal. The egg rolls were disgusting. The owner didn't give me an opportunity to get a refill of tea because they disgarded it before I was able to get a refill. My husband's orange chicken was greasy. The owner was very rude to me and yelled at me and even got another customer to stand up to me and yell at me as well. This is an unprofessional restauran. I DO NOT RECOMMEND EATING HERE. PATRONS BE WARE. And we were out of state first time customers. Also the staff was always at the desk. My food came out before my egg roll. I was craving Moo Shu chicken and was happy to see it on Royal Mandarin's menu. I placed an order for carry out. I opened the container as soon as I got home and was disappointed to see it came with flour tortillas instead of Chinese pancakes. I would not have ordered it had I known it came with tortillas. I don't even eat flour tortillas at a Mexican restaurant. The Moo Shu was bland and didn't have any mushroomsIn it. It was only cabbage and bland chicken. The fried rice wasn't fried. Wanted something different for dinner so we placed an order for pick up - our food was ready within 10 minutes of the drive over! Ordered the egg drop soup (never had veggies in egg drop soup before), crab rangoon, sesame seed chicken and broccoli beef. This has become our go-to Chinese food in town. General Tsos, sesame chicken and orange chicken are all good. The Korean specialities are also flavorful and good, especially the Korean beef. Hot and sour soup is excellent, flavorful and just spicy enough. We get this every time. The fried wontons are another good app choice. Things we don't love: The fried rice is just white rice sautéed with some egg. For a $3 up charge, just skip this. Vegetable egg rolls were only cabbage inside. Called in an order, when I received my food they charged me for more things that I did not order. Told me "I'm sorry it's in the bag we can't do anything" General Tso Chicken was soggy and my fried rice consist of bland white rice with a little bit of egg in it. 4 stars for the fact that the price can creep up on you. I'd give a 4 1/2 if I could though. The portion size makes up for the price. The portions are quite large, even more so when dining in. The food is always fresh out the kitchen, steaming hot. It has always been so very delicious. The staff are fairly kind, but they do get quite busy for how small they are. They have interesting, yet nice, decor that makes you more relaxed while eating. It's kept nice and clean. Most definitely worth a try. We went in to the Meadows location to order carry out for dinner. Online ordering for pickup and delivery is an option as well, but I had NO idea what to order as it has been well over 10 years since I last had Royal Mandarin. The service in the store was great. It seems like a place that people generally do not sit down to eat, but the waitresses were friendly! They were able to answer my questions so I could decide what to order. The kitchen packaged up the food very neatly for us to take home to enjoy. The menu is HUGE so it was tough to decide what we wanted, but we eventually settled on: -Crispy Tofu (appetizer) -Half order of "diet" tofu with broccoli -4 Vegetarian Eggrolls -Full order of orange chicken (for my partner) The crispy tofu appetizer was amazing, and I loved the sauce that came with it. The "diet" tofu meal was literally just plain boiled tofu without any seasonings, which I guess was to be expected, and broccoli. I spruced it up with some soy sauce, but I probably won't order it again unless I really want something without flavor. The eggrolls are quite large and super tasty. My partner loved the orange chicken, and the portion was huge. I believe the total was around $60, which seemed like a lot initially, but this one dinner that was meant for 2 people ended up being about 5 more individual meals that we packaged up and ate at our leisure throughout the week. 7 meals for $60 seems likes a pretty good deal to me! This restaurant is a Terre Haute staple when it comes to Chinese food. A clean environment, middle-of-the-road prices, and quick, courteous service are what keep my mom and I coming back. They have reasonable daily specials, too, and three convenient locations in Terre Haute. This one in the Meadows Mall is our go-to location. Our Go-To: Mongolian Beef, Chicken & Vegetable Deluxe, Beef & Broccoli, General Tsos, steamed rice, and of course - Crab Rangoon. With a menu as extensive and authentic to Chinese and Korean food we oftentimes wish we would venture out and try something new but aren't sure what to order. That's our next challenge. What sets them apart: They have a healthy option section on their menu that is served with no carbs and made with low sodium, low sugar, and minimal oil. You can choose your veggie option then pair it with a protein. Not something you see at this type of restaurant. Bring it back: BUBBLE TEA! This broke my heart when they said they no longer make it. That was one of the things that set them apart from other restaurants in Terre Haute. I hope they rethink it and bring it back. Side note: The Meadows Mall is making a come-back! This place is amazing. The ambiance is very nice. The food is some of the best I have had in Terre Haute. The brownies are amazing and if you get one put it in your microwave for about five seconds before eating it! I should really start to lower my expectations. Which is what I should have done when I step foot in Royal Mandarin. I was craving for some mapo tofu and Terre Haute only had so many places to satisfy my craving. The restaurant is located in a shopping strip next to Stein Mart, I don't quite remember the name. The atmosphere was dead, seems like no one took care of this place, when though there were 4-5 cashiers/servers at the front desk at all times. Eating there made me feel sad, depressed really. The menu shocked me a little. Not only does this Chinese place obviously serve Chinese food, but also "Korean Specialties" as well as bubble tea. Wow. Just wow. I have never been to a Chinese restaurant that also served Korean food and bubble tea! That was definitely a red flag for me. Oh btw, don't get too excited for the bubble tea because they don't serve it anymore. Also, next to most items, there was an option of "Half" or "Full." I've only seen those choices at a BBQ place. Hmm. I asked the cashier what half and full meant and he told me that half was one plate and full was two plates. ???¿¿¿ Wow, even more confusing. I obviously knew that full was more than half, but how much more? In addition, he also said that half didn't come with rice and I can't order mapo tofu without rice! So I had the full mapo tofu with white rice and my boyfriend got the orange chicken (playing it safe lol). Fountain drinks were free. We had to walk around and examine a few tables before finding a clean one. The food was mostly served on plastic plates, except for hot plates and noodles, I guess. I was surprised when the food came out. My boyfriend's half order did have rice with it, fried rice. Weird, since the cashier told me the complete opposite. My order came out to be a giant bowl of mapo tofu followed by a plastic plate of white rice. The rice wasn't hot and it was chunky, kind of like left over rice from last night. Secondly, the bowl of tofu was definitely not the right color or consistency. This is just visualization observations. And my boyfriend's "fried rice" looked more like white rice sprinkled with egg scraps. But, I'm not one to judge a book by it's covers. Now on to taste. The sauce for the tofu was way off, too much salt and msg. Some bites were okay while others were a sea of salt. I really tried to like it and consumed it, I really did. But I couldn't. The orange chicken was over battered, could barely taste the chicken. Needless to say, I will never be stepping foot back to this so called establishment of a "restaurant." My wife & I took our kids to eat Chinese food at the Royal Mandarin at the Meadows. We got our food really quick. I noticed some foreign object in my fried rice, it was a piece of Brillo pad. I took the piece of Brillo pad up to the counter where I ordered. They laughed said it's no big deal and just walked away. I think they walked away because they were afraid that I was going to ask for some money back. We won't go back. read more

I eat at Royal Mandarin twice a week on average. This place has a lot of character. There's something really neat about being able to see the chefs and manager at work through the window behind the counter. When it's not packed with people, this place even has a fairly nice ambiance. My go to dish is the Kung Pao Chicken. If you are even mildly interested in trying something authentic, I would recommend the dishes on their Chinese Menu. The Chinese Menu is really what sets Royal Mandarin apart from the other local Chinese take out restaurants. Ask the folks behind the counter if you are uncertain about what you're getting. They're usually pretty friendly when the restaurant isn't packed. Overall, the service at this place is pretty quick, the food is fresh and tastes quite authentic (if you order the right thing). That is all I really expect from a friendly neighborhood Chinese restaurant. So, that's why I think it deserves 5 stars! read more

I'll start this on the positives customer service is friendly and helpful and the food is hot and fresh! I was disappointed in the quality of the food. This is the only establishment that I've been to that has no vegetables in there Lo Mein side dish UNLESS you want to pay $8 to get the Vegetable Lo Mein on it's own. I feel like this hurts their business the cost of putting vegetables into the side dish of Lo Mein is not much and could easily be a simple up charge of a dollar or two. The "fried rice" is essentially steamed rice and eggs that as well is confusing to me. It's bland and flavorless. And it's lacking the iconic flavor, color, carrots, and peas that is what you would expect to see when you're ordering fried rice. Again I feel like this is odd and disappointing. While the entree dishes look great and are hot & fresh the texture of the "crispy fried" items like in General Tso's, Crispy Orange Beef, and Sesame Chicken is lacking that crunchy crispy bite that makes those dishes special.. the fried coating is soft and mushy it reminds me of the texture of McDonald's nuggets. The flavor of the Orange Crispy Beef is wonderful but again the texture is bizarre not the normal crispy texture but instead soft and pillowy... The General Tso's which I did enjoy a few years ago from here didn't taste, look, or feel like before.. it wasn't your typical familiar flavor of General Tso's. I hate leaving negative reviews because the atmosphere, customer service, and freshness is there that part is great! The lack of flavoring/frying to the rice and the missing vegetables in the side dishes is pretty unforgiving it's something you would think would just be standard. We've only been to this location once, but it's about the same as the other locations sprinkled around Terre Haute. The portions are always huge and extremely inexpensive. Clean store, friendly staff. The food is pretty good but is in no way authentic Chinese. They always put a lot of sauce, so maybe get in on the side. Only visited once - I'm a tough critic but have to admit have tried many other Chinese food restaurants in the Terre Haute area and this one takes the cake thus far. Let's admit it, what are you going to do if you want lots of vegetables for lunch in this area? It's either a salad at Panera, MCL or Traverse City Pie Company - or, worse, iceberg-based at Applebee's, Olive Garden or similar. Chinese food is the only other option. Our visit was for lunch. My wife had diced zucchini in her $5.00 lunch special garlic chicken. That's fresh cut. Zucchini isn't sold pre-cut, it won't hold up. As a matter of fact, all their vegies looked freshly cut. How about that for a fin? They offered white or 'fried' rice (not really fried, white with some egg tossed in). PLEASE get brown rice, management. This is the only shortcoming I could find. They also offer a free egg roll or crab rangoon (get the rangoon) with any entree/lunch special before 5pm. Not sure why the time distinction... I ordered the Pork Vegetable Special (large for $7.95 anytime price). Brown sauce was wonderful - no salty flavor. Lots of vegetables left me with enough leftovers for dinner. Toss in free delivery and an extremely varied menu and we'll be eating their food again very soon. The place is clean and the service quick and friendly. There is no restroom in the Meadows Shopping Center Royal Mandarin Express, but one is available in the shopping center itself. Will follow-up soon, happy 'sticking'. read more

I am friends with several Chinese students that attend Rose-Hulman and if you ask anyone of them where they go for Chinese food the answer is invariably Royal Mandarin. The restaurant is always clean and the decor suggests a much more expensive menu. The food is delicious especially the Taiwanese beef noddle soup. A half order will fill most people and only runs about $6 All in all, even a college student can afford to make Royal Mandarin a regular haunt. read more

Ahh, the glory that is Royal Mandarin. Being a local, it took me all of a few weeks to realize that this place is far and away the best Chinese food in town. The food is not only delicious and reasonably priced, but you also get a pleasing ambiance as a result of the tasteful decorations and partial view of the kitchen. I eat here once or twice a week on average, and I have not yet had a bad order of Kung Pao chicken, spicy fish or pork (soup), or bak choy with chicken mee fun (also a soup). This restaurant is my favorite thing about coming to Terre Haute. I've lived and stayed in cities all over the country and I've never had delivery from a Chinese restaurant that is on point as Royal Mandarin. Every time they prepare they go the extra mile to make it perfect and more special than anywhere else you've had it. The other big thing is that they are always consistent. They might tell you it will be 45 minutes and get there in 30. The more you order the better they figure out the timing. They don't tell you it will be an hour and you have to call the restaurant to find out if the drivers even left yet, like so many other delivery places. I typically get the steamed dumplings which are exceptional and a sweet and sour dish. I can't eat a full portion, but they heat up really nicely. The cuts of meet they use in everything is better than normal and the fried foods always taste clean and are crispy. If you are hesitant about ordering because you have been wronged by so many Chinese delivery places in the past, don't be. This place is on point and won't keep you waiting. read more
