Good!!!!!!!! Cute restaurant with that also has private seating which I absolutely love!

Passing through and tried some sushi. I ordered a few rolls a Philadelphia and shrimp tempura. Shrimp was overcooked. We both thought the menu should have some description. We both agreed wouldnt return.

Food was so-so and sushi menu was a no-go for my sushi rookie self not knowing what all the options actually had in them. The restaurant and restrooms were particularly nice and very clean. Unfortunately our waitress was very English challenged which only added to the menu confusion.

    Cute projection.

Umi Grill is a highly favored tradition for us! I called ahead and requested a booth that we had on our first anniversary years ago and they were very nice to oblige us with the same cute little spot we enjoyed when I moved to the area. We planned our rolls before we arrived by using Yelp and FB pics others had posted. It saved a lot of time for us and the wait staff. Some were ones we had enjoyed before and four were made new favorites. We loved our waiter who was personable and so willing to help us.

Umi Grill and Sushi Bar is a fantastic restaurant to enjoy tasty sushi rolls, delicious udon noodles, perfectly seasoned fried rice, and more in Terre Haute, Indiana. If you haven't had the chance to try udon noodles, you must visit Umi! The large Nabeyaki Udon noodle bowl was packed to the brim and served with Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura for only around $15. The fresh Umi House Salad is served with star shaped carrots and costs around $5. I didn't order sushi, but I heard great reviews from the colleagues at my table. The lighting effects and ambience is open, unique, and welcoming. The server was very friendly and gave us plenty of time to order and enjoy our meals. Highly recommend this spot!

Delicious and can't wait to go again! We ordered the grilled sea bass, a shrimp tempura roll, and the cowboy roll, and everything was amazing! The sea bass and sauce on it were just so soft and buttery. The menu was kind of confusing about the sides that it came with. It said it came with Asparagus, Mango, and a salad. When that plate came out, it had the sea bass, and then a cold salad on the side, the asparagus, mango, tomato, and avocado were dumped on top of the salad. Kinda of disappointing since the menu made it sound like a side of cooked asparagus and mango. It definitely tasted good, the menu just wasn't clear. The sushi rolls were the best I've ever had. I don't know how they prepare their sushi rice but it was pillowy soft and perfect texture. I wish we would have just ordered all sushi instead of ordering an entree. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I really appreciated that they were all dressed professionally and neatly. The interior was clean and nice. I did read some previous reviews that the seating feels really tight and not very private, and I would agree a little bit, but it was something I wouldn't have noticed unless I read other people's comments about it. Overall - definitely 5 out of 5 stars! Great flavors, menu choices, and great staff.

I don't know why I was told this was the best restaurant around. Service was good but the food was overpriced and the soda was flat. The shrimp fried rice had zero taste. Not a fan of this place.

I'm updating my review from 2 years ago and adding a star back to Umi. Maybe that's because I know there are only a few good restaurants in town now and Umi falls in to that. I consider Umi a "nice but not the nicest" dinner out in Terre Haute. Interestingly we ordered the exact same meals as before. I'm adding updated pictures. I would definitely go with the bento box if you want something that is offered in a box. You get absolutely everything this way: your entree, rice, soup, salad, vegetables in tempura, green beans, and sushi. You can sub your sushi roll for whatever you pick and bust accept the up charge, which I did. The salmon is consistently good as is the soup, salad, and really tasty green beans. Service leaves something to be desired. Our server seemed to disappear for long periods, and didn't check on us after bringing the entrees. We didn't get our sides or rice or steak knives, so we had to stop other employees and ask them. Our server also did not ask if we'd like a second round of drinks. We may have, but by the time we saw him again, we didn't want to bother with ordering more drinks. Overall Umi is solid sushi, seafood, and steak. If you are looking for amazing service and to feel like a valued customer, don't expect too much.

I have been wanting to come here for awhile since my friend moved to town so I came to visit her so we could finally make it happen. Boy, it did not disappoint! We came on a Saturday evening and had made a reservation prior. They were booked up! We went a little overboard and ordered 2 appetizers and 3 rolls for 3 people and we surprisingly crushed it. The crab cakes and spicy gyoza were great starters. The crab cakes had some kind of fruit with it that really added nice flavor to each bite. The spicy gyoza was pretty spicy for my palette but you can't go wrong with gyoza. As far as rolls, we ordered a Philadelphia roll, spicy California, and then two other rolls I can't remember the names of. Both were very unique and nothing like I've had anywhere before. The one I can remember had filet mignon on top with a teriyaki sauce. Aside from their already extensive menu and sushi list, they have a "secret" menu that isn't laid out for the public. It's like 3 additional menu pages. The waiter actually brought this up to us so if you're every curious, ask! I would enjoy coming back here again!

Ordered the Sushi flight on the new app. It was confusing and what was on my receipt was not what I received. Please change your app so the receipt shows the rolls in the order. I would have caught my mistake if the user interface wasn't misleading. I'm more disappointed I was told they wouldn't help fix it but instead I could create a new order at full price. I went to college in terre haute and don't make it back here often but would go out of our way to come back to Umi. We will not be back. Was told by staff it's a new owner and they were shocked they wouldn't help fix it.

I am in town for work and wanted some good sushi for carry-out to take back to my hotel for dinner. Umi Grill DID NOT disappoint! First of all my food was done right on time, the employees were kind, well-mannered, and quick. Secondly, their Terre Haute Roll is one of THE BEST sushi rolls I've ever had up north! The flavors all went together perfectly with the eel sauce, a little bit spicy, a little sweet, and the shrimp tempura were large & phenomenal. The crab and cream cheese wontons were perfect as well, nice & crispy with the perfect ratio of filling. You can't really mess up miso soup so obviously that was killer too. Overall 10/10 experience, I was thoroughly impressed. When I'm in town next and have more time I would love to dine in as the ambiance inside also seemed pretty neat.

Upon walking in, we were greeted, and I decor to take time to look at the menu. We decided to get several meal options and sushi rolls. We ordered shrimp and meatball pho, Mongolian beef, chicken and shrimp, fushion combo rolls, shaggy dog roll and taro Oreo smoothie. The pho broth lacked flavor. Also, I had to ask for toppings that were supposed to be included with my pho. When asked where the basil was, I was told they were out, and that they usually get some from the store down from them, but they were closed. I explained that if I'd know that, I would have chosen another option. I also had to ask for sauces such as the oyster and siratcha sauce. The sushi rolls were okay, but nothing to rave over. When I attempted to order the Taro Milk Tea, were told the my were out of boba, so we opted for the taro Oreo smoothie. As far as the Mongolian combo plate, the steak and chic was super processed and felt like it came out of a bag. For almost $100, I would expect to receive better quality food and honesty on what options are actually available. We were definitely disappointed in this experience.

Of course, I always get skeptical of seafood being fresh in the middle of nowhere middle Illinois in the Midwest of the USA but this time we went for the hibachi experience so I gave the shrimp a try and my husband ate the chicken. He had a side of fried rice with egg and I opted for noodles with our vegetables. The complementary house salad and soup tonight was mushroom was OK but not as good as other hibachi style restaurants. Our hibachi chef was funny entertaining and was able to connect with each of the guests. He made jokes and put on a wonderful performance. I appreciated that not every seat was filled for hibachi and we were still able to enjoy dinner as a party of eight. Next time we visit, we will eat on the traditional restaurant side to test out the sushi and other menu offerings. The restaurant is fairly wheelchair accessible with everything being on one even level and there's plenty of accessible parking and close parking as Fujiyama is next to a few other stores sharing the parking lot.

Having seen a billboard AD driving along the i70, I thought huh, hibachi down the road on exit 160, let's do this. Originally had other plans, like hitting up the NAF NAF for some Mediterranean food couple miles further. But haven't had any Bennihana style hibachi in ages, I did sort of crave the grilled veges, NY Steaks and hibachi butter fried rice. So got in here today, and it was pretty quiet. Wasn't even sure if there were any parties at the grill. Back in the days I use to work at a pretty high octane hibachi in the Permian Basin (ya, think Billy Bob Thornton in Landman on steroids). We'd have oil field crews pack our entire restaurant, and I'd be doing daily sales of 3,000.00 to 4,000.00 just under my own tab. Those were the days you can order a bowl of Udon noodles and it probably came out to 8.99--- good ole pre- inflation days. So onto the food here. Steak was over cooked, wanted medium rare, tasted well done. Chicken was decent, moist, not dried out. I've had hibachi chicken in certain restaurants where the meat was straight up dried. So good job. The fried rice was a 7/10. Not the best, but better than Panda Express. The grilled veges were alright, the teriyaki sauce was decent not too sweet. And overall the hibachi combo plate of NY Steak, Chicken w/ fried rice was overall a 7.5/10. I want to give a thumbs up to the restaurant for their portions. This being lunch hours, the lunch portion here can play out in many other places as dinner size. The Miso soup was your typical hot soup + instant dried seaweed + supermarket house brands tofu. Can't screw this dish up. And the salad was sugar overkill...along with the Yum Yum Sauce. What I wished they did with the Salad sauce. Okay, blend carrots, apples, increase ginger, couple slices of lemon, and cut down on the sugars. For the Yum Yum Sauce decrease the sugar, more garlic, and please add a tad bit more MSG for that flavor bomb. Now because I figured I might still be hungry, I ordered their 2 roll sushi lunch special-- the Bay bridge, and the Volcano. Sushi rolls were both pretty solid. The sushi chef here gets a 8/10 for his sushi rice making ability. I've seen complete failures at restaurants serving sushi where the rice isn't even cooked through. Worse I've had sushi rice that tasted like those Supermarket sushi franchises Snow Fox and Fuji Foods. Special mention: the wasabi is spicy. Very good. For a hibachi grill restaurant, this place is a solid 7/10. Is it worth walking over here if your semi truck is parked nearby? Yes. Is it worth a detour if you're on a road trip and don't want burgers and fries? Yes. Is it a nice setting to sit down and talk with your colleagues or watch their hibachi chefs perform? Sure. In the end, for price, portion, and just a no bs Japanese teppanyaki meal, I think Fujiyama can fill that void. Why the 3 Stars? because there's room to improve, food wise, like the fried rice: more white peppers, onions, garlic butter, soy sauce, scallions. To my Chinese passerbyers: 覺得路過的客人,可以過來關顧一下,整體食物質量管控還行,就是甜了一點;要是有哪位華人卡車師傅在附近停靠,過夜,我也還是會推薦過來這家日式鐵板試試,想當年羅蘭剛一家老字號的上林鐵板燒已經被蒙古餡餅給取代了,也就是抱有這種懷舊才使得我過來品一品這村莊的日式鐵板。

The last time we ate here it was Friday right during the noon lunch hour but there were no customers when we arrived. A few more people came in after we did but it never really got busy. The ambiance was therefore pretty low-key. The service we received both times was fine. We had an order of gyoza we split between us, we each had a bowl of miso soup, and we each had the two-rolls lunch special. The gyoza was good, although it was fully deep-fried and not just browned on one side as it usually is. The miso soup was strangely dark - I even verified with the waitress that it was indeed miso soup. I'm wondering if perhaps they used red miso paste rather than the usual shiro (white) miso paste? Regardless, the soup was flavorful and good and although not quite traditional miso soup, very acceptable. And quite a generous portion, also. The sushi rolls were fine - the way this chef arranges the salmon roll pieces in the shape of a flower is very pretty. We couldn't eat it all so the waitress brought us boxes and we took the remainder home. The check was around $55 before tip.
