I called ahead and requested a booth that we had on our first anniversary years ago and they were very nice to oblige us with the same cute little spot we enjoyed when I moved to the area. This place is a lot of peoples favorite. I've been a good amount and will continue to try different things as I visit again with locals that love it. If you are looking for fresh, simple, authentic sushi, it's not the place for you. If you like an Americanized role, tempura, and mayo then you'll probably love it. I've tried tuna, shrimp, crab, steak rolls here and majority of them are fried and smothered in a mayo sauce that overwhelms the actual roll. The most talked about rolls, the Verve and Dr Singh, are good don't get me wrong. I personally wouldn't order them though. The Verve is swimming in mayo and the Dr Singh is a great assortment, but I prefer simpler sushi. The tuna roll I've had from there was filled with mushy tuna that looked like it had been through a meat grinder - I wouldn't recommend. The service is always great and quick. Delicious and can't wait to go again! We ordered the grilled sea bass, a shrimp tempura roll, and the cowboy roll, and everything was amazing! The sea bass and sauce on it were just so soft and buttery. The menu was kind of confusing about the sides that it came with. It said it came with Asparagus, Mango, and a salad. When that plate came out, it had the sea bass, and then a cold salad on the side, the asparagus, mango, tomato, and avocado were dumped on top of the salad. Kinda of disappointing since the menu made it sound like a side of cooked asparagus and mango. It definitely tasted good, the menu just wasn't clear. The sushi rolls were the best I've ever had. I don't know how they prepare their sushi rice but it was pillowy soft and perfect texture. I wish we would have just ordered all sushi instead of ordering an entree. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I really appreciated that they were all dressed professionally and neatly. The interior was clean and nice. I did read some previous reviews that the seating feels really tight and not very private, and I would agree a little bit, but it was something I wouldn't have noticed unless I read other people's comments about it. Got the fried rice and a plate of sushi on doordash and they gave me enough rice to last me for three days. Absolutely insane portion size, much more than I expected. Also I had gotten the shrimp tempura roll, it was the shrimp out of the box from sysco or wherever, but most places serve this. Wasn't bad but I thought by their menu that they would make it from scratch. Also ordered sashimi and had great taste by itself and also another roll I completely forgot what it was, but I shared it with another person and they ate it all and they loved it as well. I'm updating my review from 2 years ago and adding a star back to Umi. Maybe that's because I know there are only a few good restaurants in town now and Umi falls in to that. I consider Umi a "nice but not the nicest" dinner out in Terre Haute. Interestingly we ordered the exact same meals as before. I'm adding updated pictures. I would definitely go with the bento box if you want something that is offered in a box. You get absolutely everything this way: your entree, rice, soup, salad, vegetables in tempura, green beans, and sushi. You can sub your sushi roll for whatever you pick and bust accept the up charge, which I did. The salmon is consistently good as is the soup, salad, and really tasty green beans. Service leaves something to be desired. Our server seemed to disappear for long periods, and didn't check on us after bringing the entrees. We didn't get our sides or rice or steak knives, so we had to stop other employees and ask them. Our server also did not ask if we'd like a second round of drinks. We may have, but by the time we saw him again, we didn't want to bother with ordering more drinks. Overall Umi is solid sushi, seafood, and steak. If you are looking for amazing service and to feel like a valued customer, don't expect too much. read more

I have been wanting to come here for awhile since my friend moved to town so I came to visit her so we could finally make it happen. Boy, it did not disappoint! We came on a Saturday evening and had made a reservation prior. They were booked up! We went a little overboard and ordered 2 appetizers and 3 rolls for 3 people and we surprisingly crushed it. The crab cakes and spicy gyoza were great starters. The crab cakes had some kind of fruit with it that really added nice flavor to each bite. The spicy gyoza was pretty spicy for my palette but you can't go wrong with gyoza. As far as rolls, we ordered a Philadelphia roll, spicy California, and then two other rolls I can't remember the names of. Both were very unique and nothing like I've had anywhere before. The one I can remember had filet mignon on top with a teriyaki sauce. Aside from their already extensive menu and sushi list, they have a "secret" menu that isn't laid out for the public. First of all my food was done right on time, the employees were kind, well-mannered, and quick. Secondly, their Terre Haute Roll is one of THE BEST sushi rolls I've ever had up north! The flavors all went together perfectly with the eel sauce, a little bit spicy, a little sweet, and the shrimp tempura were large & phenomenal. The crab and cream cheese wontons were perfect as well, nice & crispy with the perfect ratio of filling. You can't really mess up miso soup so obviously that was killer too. We had a weird experience... our server told us he was new and seemed a bit confused. He did take our order for drinks and an appetizer... 40 minutes later another server showed up at our table and proclaimed that our server had gone AWOL, and that he would be taking over. This restaurant is an interesting place in Terra Haute, IN. The atmosphere makes room for couples and groups with neat lighting effects above the sushi prep bar. We placed our order, and then watched as big platters of fried rice were placed on tables around us. Apparently, this is a popular thing at Umi. People take home large amounts of leftovers of that dish to enjoy again and again. We ordered Shrimp Tempura and the Sashimi Bento Box. Both came with miso soup and salad. The soup had good flavor. The bits in the soup were chopped in sizes that made it easy to manage. Umi prepares a very nice salad with mixed greens, other veggies, and fresh ginger dressing. Many times a salad in a sushi restaurant falls short. This did not! The Tempura was really nice. The shrimp was tender, not overcooked. The tempura vegetables were made even tastier with the brothy dipping sauce. The Sashimi Bento Box is where I set the 4 stars. The fish was good but not melty good. I didn't ask about where they get their fish or how often. Indiana is very far from an ocean, after all. I was quite satisfied just the same. I should have asked to change the Cali Roll to something more interesting, but didn't think about it. It was fine, but I would have like to try a local favorite. I would go to Umi again. read more

So I generally take photos but I didn't because I was actually here with a client and well that doesn't seem very professional-LOL This was my fist time here and I will definitely be back. We didn't have reservations but was able to be seated right away at noon. Our server came right over as soon as she saw us settled. The menu isn't overly huge but it's just enough variety. The sushi menu is pretty standard, I didn't study it like I normally would (I was entertaining), but it seemed like a good selection. I ordered soup and Spicy California roll with soy paper. Now I get California rolls quite often and there was something about these that I am going to put here on record. They were the BEST California rolls I have had. I mean simply amazing. I always get soy paper (if you don't you need to) but yeh I'm not sure if it was the crab or what but amazing. The two people I was with also liked their order. I've been going to Sushi Umi (now Umi Grill) for over 10 years now and have always enjoyed it! Personally, I am not a sushi eater, but they have lots of options for people who don't want sushi! My partner loves sushi and we come here every year for their birthday. It's always such a treat! If you are able to call ahead for reservations of one of the small private booths, I highly recommend it. The main dining area can get a little loud and crowded on busy nights. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures last night besides our Sake, which was amazing! We started with an appetizer of vegetable egg rolls. They came with a yummy sweet chili sauce. For the entree, my partner ordered the Dr. Singh and Red Dragon rolls, while I got the chicken bento box. I love the bento box because it comes with miso soup, a salad (with THE BEST peanut dressing), vegetable and shrimp tempura, garlic green beans, and a California roll, plus the protein of your choice. Finally, for dessert, I love their mochi, so I enjoyed some chocolate mochi, and my partner got a honey cake with black sesame ice cream, complete with a birthday candle. The service is always excellent. Our server last night was very kind and offered recommendations when asked. Umi is a staple in the Terre Haute community. I have come here multiple times over the last few years and each and every time I come here I am pleasantly surprised that Terre Haute has a fantastic sushi restaurant. I got the doctor sing roll as I do every time and it came out perfectly. I also ordered a bunch of other things to sample the menu.. like their ramen and dumplings.
