    Cute projection.

Umi Grill is a highly favored tradition for us! I called ahead and requested a booth that we had on our first anniversary years ago and they were very nice to oblige us with the same cute little spot we enjoyed when I moved to the area. We planned our rolls before we arrived by using Yelp and FB pics others had posted. It saved a lot of time for us and the wait staff. Some were ones we had enjoyed before and four were made new favorites. We loved our waiter who was personable and so willing to help us.

Passing through and tried some sushi. I ordered a few rolls a Philadelphia and shrimp tempura. Shrimp was overcooked. We both thought the menu should have some description. We both agreed wouldnt return.

Food was so-so and sushi menu was a no-go for my sushi rookie self not knowing what all the options actually had in them. The restaurant and restrooms were particularly nice and very clean. Unfortunately our waitress was very English challenged which only added to the menu confusion.

Umi Grill and Sushi Bar is a fantastic restaurant to enjoy tasty sushi rolls, delicious udon noodles, perfectly seasoned fried rice, and more in Terre Haute, Indiana. If you haven't had the chance to try udon noodles, you must visit Umi! The large Nabeyaki Udon noodle bowl was packed to the brim and served with Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura for only around $15. The fresh Umi House Salad is served with star shaped carrots and costs around $5. I didn't order sushi, but I heard great reviews from the colleagues at my table. The lighting effects and ambience is open, unique, and welcoming. The server was very friendly and gave us plenty of time to order and enjoy our meals. Highly recommend this spot!

Delicious and can't wait to go again! We ordered the grilled sea bass, a shrimp tempura roll, and the cowboy roll, and everything was amazing! The sea bass and sauce on it were just so soft and buttery. The menu was kind of confusing about the sides that it came with. It said it came with Asparagus, Mango, and a salad. When that plate came out, it had the sea bass, and then a cold salad on the side, the asparagus, mango, tomato, and avocado were dumped on top of the salad. Kinda of disappointing since the menu made it sound like a side of cooked asparagus and mango. It definitely tasted good, the menu just wasn't clear. The sushi rolls were the best I've ever had. I don't know how they prepare their sushi rice but it was pillowy soft and perfect texture. I wish we would have just ordered all sushi instead of ordering an entree. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I really appreciated that they were all dressed professionally and neatly. The interior was clean and nice. I did read some previous reviews that the seating feels really tight and not very private, and I would agree a little bit, but it was something I wouldn't have noticed unless I read other people's comments about it. Overall - definitely 5 out of 5 stars! Great flavors, menu choices, and great staff.

I don't know why I was told this was the best restaurant around. Service was good but the food was overpriced and the soda was flat. The shrimp fried rice had zero taste. Not a fan of this place.

I'm updating my review from 2 years ago and adding a star back to Umi. Maybe that's because I know there are only a few good restaurants in town now and Umi falls in to that. I consider Umi a "nice but not the nicest" dinner out in Terre Haute. Interestingly we ordered the exact same meals as before. I'm adding updated pictures. I would definitely go with the bento box if you want something that is offered in a box. You get absolutely everything this way: your entree, rice, soup, salad, vegetables in tempura, green beans, and sushi. You can sub your sushi roll for whatever you pick and bust accept the up charge, which I did. The salmon is consistently good as is the soup, salad, and really tasty green beans. Service leaves something to be desired. Our server seemed to disappear for long periods, and didn't check on us after bringing the entrees. We didn't get our sides or rice or steak knives, so we had to stop other employees and ask them. Our server also did not ask if we'd like a second round of drinks. We may have, but by the time we saw him again, we didn't want to bother with ordering more drinks. Overall Umi is solid sushi, seafood, and steak. If you are looking for amazing service and to feel like a valued customer, don't expect too much.

I have been wanting to come here for awhile since my friend moved to town so I came to visit her so we could finally make it happen. Boy, it did not disappoint! We came on a Saturday evening and had made a reservation prior. They were booked up! We went a little overboard and ordered 2 appetizers and 3 rolls for 3 people and we surprisingly crushed it. The crab cakes and spicy gyoza were great starters. The crab cakes had some kind of fruit with it that really added nice flavor to each bite. The spicy gyoza was pretty spicy for my palette but you can't go wrong with gyoza. As far as rolls, we ordered a Philadelphia roll, spicy California, and then two other rolls I can't remember the names of. Both were very unique and nothing like I've had anywhere before. The one I can remember had filet mignon on top with a teriyaki sauce. Aside from their already extensive menu and sushi list, they have a "secret" menu that isn't laid out for the public. It's like 3 additional menu pages. The waiter actually brought this up to us so if you're every curious, ask! I would enjoy coming back here again!

Ordered the Sushi flight on the new app. It was confusing and what was on my receipt was not what I received. Please change your app so the receipt shows the rolls in the order. I would have caught my mistake if the user interface wasn't misleading. I'm more disappointed I was told they wouldn't help fix it but instead I could create a new order at full price. I went to college in terre haute and don't make it back here often but would go out of our way to come back to Umi. We will not be back. Was told by staff it's a new owner and they were shocked they wouldn't help fix it.

I am in town for work and wanted some good sushi for carry-out to take back to my hotel for dinner. Umi Grill DID NOT disappoint! First of all my food was done right on time, the employees were kind, well-mannered, and quick. Secondly, their Terre Haute Roll is one of THE BEST sushi rolls I've ever had up north! The flavors all went together perfectly with the eel sauce, a little bit spicy, a little sweet, and the shrimp tempura were large & phenomenal. The crab and cream cheese wontons were perfect as well, nice & crispy with the perfect ratio of filling. You can't really mess up miso soup so obviously that was killer too. Overall 10/10 experience, I was thoroughly impressed. When I'm in town next and have more time I would love to dine in as the ambiance inside also seemed pretty neat.

Cooked rolls - these prices are from 2020, add a dollar or two
    Kristy S.

I still think for the prices they're charging your tables and chairs could be set up a little bit better - I don't know.. higher quality? More privacy? It's your typical Asian restaurant seating in my opinion. The servers always seem to know their sushi and do a great job. I've never had anything bad or a bad experience here. I just really wish they would include their most popular rolls with descriptions on their menu. For me, I am a visual learner. I can't pick what I want to eat with a server describing sushi rolls - this is my only negative. For that I've included pictures of rolls I'd typically order. The prices on these lists are from 2020 so add a dollar or two.

Overall It's not that good. I think there is lack of sushi restaurants in the area so this place is relevant. But it's not that good. Service - A Extremely friendly and nice service. The waiter was very nice and provided recommendations. Food came out fairly fast Quality - D It's just not good sushi. So got the Singh and Verbo (?) roll. Based on the waiters recommendation - not good. Mismatch of flavors. Didn't make sense and didn't taste good Value - C Nice size portions around $20 a roll. Was expecting a lot more in taste Had a long day and skipped lunch - was really looking forward to indulging in some sushi but was disappointed. If you have had any semblance of decent sushi - skip this place. I think it does well because there are no other options and individuals in the area have not or do not have the opportunity for better sushi.

Upon walking in, we were greeted, and I decor to take time to look at the menu. We decided to get several meal options and sushi rolls. Also, I had to ask for toppings that were supposed to be included with my pho. When asked where the basil was, I was told they were out, and that they usually get some from the store down from them, but they were closed. I explained that if I'd know that, I would have chosen another option. I also had to ask for sauces such as the oyster and siratcha sauce. The sushi rolls were okay, but nothing to rave over. When I attempted to order the Taro Milk Tea, were told the my were out of boba, so we opted for the taro Oreo smoothie. As far as the Mongolian combo plate, the steak and chic was super processed and felt like it came out of a bag. For almost $100, I would expect to receive better quality food and honesty on what options are actually available. We were definitely disappointed in this experience.

I'm writing this review mainly because I hope management sees it. Two things keep this from being a 5-star experience for me. First, sale pricing. I would estimate that around 80% of the time I buy something advertised as on sale, the discount doesn't ring up correctly. That makes it hard to shop with confidence. Second, I really, really, really wish the store had self-checkout lanes. Partly so customers can easily verify prices as they scan items, but mainly because I've noticed some food-handling habits at checkout that are concerning. For example, I once bought hot bar food (which you open and eat right away), and the cashier was eating crackers with both hands so fast you'd have thought those crackers owed her money while ringing up my ready to eat, while the bagger was picking at her lip gloss with her fingers. That's not what most people expect when handling ready-to-eat food. I've also seen cashiers lick their fingers before counting cash back. That is gross. For both of us. Having worked in banks, I could horrify you telling you in detail how disgustingly dirty is money. After the lip picking incident I haven't been buying as much hot bar and that's bad for me and bad for their business. Self-checkout would help avoid all those issues and make an already good store perfect. Its not the cheapest place in town but it could be the best. If pricing accuracy improves and self-checkouts are added, this would easily be a 5-star grocery store for me.
