While I'm not personally much of a shopper, it is nice to be able to find nice, healthy and fresh produce and quality goods in a local market. While some might recognize that many brands are produced right here on farms here in the Midwest, with only the highest of standards, others might not recognized the value in that. You still have to read the labels to ensure you're getting the "good stuff", but this place will have it. For example, check the ingredients on your favorite dressing and you'll likely find canola, soy, or other commodity oils. To get the best value for your spend, you have to seek out the healthier options like Tessemae's organic products, which have high oleic sunflower oil and extra virgin olive oil which offers the best compromise with taste, texture, and health concerns so you don't have to feel too guilty for going a little extra on the delicious. Some departments like the butcher shop, deli, vitamin and body care have helpful staff to answer questions about the ingredients while others don't seem to be staffed, which is a shame in a healthy food marketplace, where for the uninitiated, there is still a minefield of "lesser" quality options. An educated staff can make a big difference in making the best choices. One thing to take note of though: Apparently some of the products don't move as fast here as in other markets. Perhaps not everyone is as concerned about healthy eating as perhaps they should be! I've noticed some outdated products not getting pulled by the expiration date. However, the management is glad to help out when you do find these exceptions. Also, many organic products don't have the longest shelf life, because they are optimized for flavor and healthfulness instead of being shelf stable for years. So be sure and check the expiration dates as you shop. I've gotten some prepackaged bulk nut mixes that were stale. If you like these, I'd elect to package my own and make sure to sample them prior to purchase to ensure freshness, as there is nothing more disappointing than finding that the healthy snacks you just brought home are less than perfect.

Salad bar. Note: I grabbed some ahi tuna poke on the side and avocados to add to my salad from other areas of the store. Total $5.31

This is my "go-to" place for organic food!! Staff folk are super helpful. Produce is in good shape and the deli is great.

Good quality produce, good healthy food, a little more expensive than your average grocery store though

For example, the 79-cents a pound plums are more like $2.29 in the UP at the store. Luckily, there's a roadside produce stand like Spiessl's on the edge of Neugaunee along US-41, right next to the "Welcome to Ishpeming" sign on the road, if you're headed westbound. This place is nothing more than a series of tents and some tables with no distinguishing signs to draw attention on the road. You just have to know it's there and stop in if you're headed to or from Marquette. The Spiessl name is that of the family who runs the business, which is what the girl at the cash register told me. The place is a pretty bare-bones operation with the tables, a scale, cash register and boxes of produce marked with hand-written prices. During the growing season, it's open from morning till sunset every day. The corn here is usually the bi-color yellow/white variety, always succulent and soft. They also have cherries, blueberries, raspberries and tomatoes brought in from the Lower Peninsula. Perhaps my favorite find on this trip were the freshly picked Michigan peaches, all soft and fuzzy and juicy, not like the flavorless rock apples from California you buy at the supermarket. There were still green leaves attached to some of the fruits! They also have awesome sweet mini-watermelons the size of cantaloupes. And they carry another Upper Michigan specialty - the club-like 2-foot long monster-sized zucchini that you can probably use to bludgeon a person to death. And you never know what you may find there. Last summer, I got a cluster of mid-sized, perfectly round and flavorful tomatoes. I asked where they are from and to my surprise - Israel of all places! Amazing how they turned up in the Michigan UP. They were so good that I saved the seeds to plant in my garden next year. Finally, it seems they have the best deal on bananas too, 40 cents a pound, for my hungry Stunt Boy who runs on banana fuel sometimes. Hard to beat that even in Chicago.

We were planning on doing something else, but decided to stay in the C-U area so we didn't get to the market until 11:30, they close at noon. Some vendors were packing up and some sold most of their goods. Since we weren't planning on going to the farmer's market, I had already purchased a bunch of produce and meat for her at Whole Foods. I wish I hadn't. The produce at this market looked so good. They had good amount of produce and meat vendors. Prices seemed very reasonable. They had vendors that sold baked goods, jewelry, bags, soap, etc. The downside for students is the distance from campus and hours. I told my daughter she should coax a friend with a car to go with her. We were hungry and decided to check out a food truck. I don't know if there are usually more food trucks, but there were only 2 when we were there. The home football game may have effected the number of trucks. We chose Piato. I opted to try the farmers breakfast sandwich and my daughter tried the Carolina pulled pork sandwich. She wanted biscuits and gravy, but the ran out of biscuits. I enjoyed my sandwich. It was on sourdough bread, fried egg, cheddar and sausage. I liked it wasn't greasy. My daughter enjoyed the pulled pork. She even liked the cole slaw that came on top of the sandwich. She chose the bourbon sugar bbq sauce and said it was really good. We also got a fresh squeezed lemonade. We didn't enjoy that as much. We think it may have been sweetened with stevia. It had a weird aftertaste which is why we think it wasn't sugar. We don't like stevia. All in all, would definitely eat here again. Reasonable prices and friendly service!
