I highly recommend the chicken tikka masala but have also tried butter chicken and Rohan josh as well. Anything you get is great here and I've never been disappointed! Hiccups. This place gives me hiccups. Strange, really. I had to pause a moment to figure out why. That's when it dawned on me. Whenever I eat here, I end up shoveling this goodness into my pie hole as quickly as possible. That's the source of my hiccups. I'm convinced that if there is a Celestial Kingdom, menu items from this establishment will be all that's eaten in heaven. The Old Testament says something about "mana" but I believe the Hebrew translation is "Chicken Kurma with a side of garlic naan." It's difficult to pause while gorging here. It's their fault, really. Loved this place. Went on NYE and it wasn't that busy, but they did have a ton of take out, so you know people like it here. The service was good and friendly. We ordered the chicken tikka masala, chicken coconut kurma, chicken vindaloo, and a lamb rice dish. The vindaloo was spectacular, my favorite dish of the night. Also really enjoyed the coconut kurma, very good. We got garlic naan and buttered naan, both great. Will be back to this place as everything tasted wonderful and service was great. read more

Uninspired "Utah-Grade" Indian food. My family and I have been here many times before, and this place was the go-to location for Indian food here in Sandy 10+ years ago. Now, not so much. First...great service. No issues there. Last night my son and I ordered Chicken Vindaloo (Med-Hot), Coconut Korma (mild), and Aloo Saag (mild), along with a side of garlic naan. He had a Kingfisher beer, and I had the Taj Mahal brew. LOVE those beers! The three entrees were just kinda' tasteless overall. No real finesse with the spices and seasonings. The what I call "Utah-Grade" Indian food lacked the true robust flavors that I expect...and have been served at any number of other restaurants here in Sandy, Draper, and father north in SLC. The rice? Definitely not light and delicate Basmati. More like Uncle Ben's. They even charged us for papadoms and chutney (and again, with two uninspired chutneys...) Maybe these folks are just catering to the local palate, but having eaten some very good Indian food here in the SLC valley (Aroma, Karma, India House, Ganesh), all throughout the USA, as well as the UK, Ireland, and even in Korea, over the last 10+ years, this restaurant isn't delivering like it once used to. Value for the money? Nil. With a tip, we left out of there with a $75.00 bill. That's just too pricey for this quality of food. I really hope they change back, get some real chef's back in the kitchen, and start producing more flavorful dishes. Oh, and as Tom K said, if you want hot, order your food "hot" or "very hot"...as my Medium Hot Vindaloo was very mild. I tried again last week with another couple... they nailed it this time. We ordered shrimp tikka masala, chicken tikka, lamb coconut korma and butter chicken. All of them are cooked in perfection. As usual, I requested spicy sauce on the side. The shrimp tikka masala is my favorite with the shrimp is fully peeled-off, so you just need to devour them. While we requested mild, I added the spicy sauce to provide additional heat to it. Chicken tikka is good... it is on a hot-plate with onion. We requested medium so that there is additional sauces on top of it, as recommended by the server. Lamb coconut korma is great, especially with the extra spicy sauce. Butter chicken is just tasty. We also ordered 4 different type of naan from original, butter, garlic and onion. Truthfully, we could not differentiate in between original and butter, because both are buttery. Our favorites are garlic and onion... yummy good ! My wife ordered mango lassi, which is sweet... she loved it. This time around the service is perfect ! This has been our go-to spot for Indian food for a while. We always get the butter chicken and chicken coconut kurma, and it's always SO good. Better, richer flavors than all of the other Indian food places we've been to (including Bombay). The regular naan is great too! We recently had a small issue with a takeout order, and when I brought it to their attention the next day, they were so nice and more than willing to fix it for me, and made sure that we were happy and taken care of. You couldn't ask for better Indian here in the valley, or better service. Very highly recommend! read more

Our friend has an extreme nut allergy, We asked the staff if our food could be cooked separately to accommodate his allergy. They assured me that our food would be cooked separately and that they can work with us. Needless to say, sitting in a hospital room. When he started to have a reaction, the waitress came out and said oh... it must be because the naan bread that he had (garlic naan) was cooked with the Pashwari bread (that has cashews). #fail If you can't with 100% say you can accommodate an allergy, don't tell your customers that you can. To put the cherry on top, I took my friend to the hospital... dropped him off at the ER. Then went back to pick up our wives and find that they were even charged for their "non-eaten" meal! Little local restaurant is a diamond! Atmosphere is great and authentic! Tables were clean, had lovely Indian music, and beautiful table clothes. Very friendly and fast service; quick to bring out food and refill drinks. Food was incredible! We had garlic naan, chicken tikka masala (spiced "hot") and chicken saag ("mild"). Everything was great, down the the dips for the naan. Wonderful proportions and chicken was moist. To top it off I would say this place was kid friendly. In the back of a blah strip mall is the shining star of Royal India. Royal India is a tasty indian restaurant with very good representations of northern and southern Indian cuisines. I try to eat more vegetarian and there are a ton of choices. Some of my favorities include the vegetable samosas, saag paneer, and some of the more curry based entrees. Prices are also super reasonable with most dishes around $10/ pop. Portion sizes are reasonable so I'd say that an entree per person and maybe an appetizer/ naan to share is more than enough. I'd be more inclined to the additional star but the decor and service do not justify a five star rating. When we got to the restaurant, we had to wait for 15 minutes for a table despite a number of tables being open. Once we were seated, service was extremely attentive, but the waiting for the table was annoying. Likewise, the joint has some murals but inherently the decor is a bit faux and shabby. For a very good casual Indian fare meal in nondescript digs, Royal India is a great choice. read more

Wow, yes, wow for really solid Indian food in Sandy, UT. I came here with my family and we ordered a lot of food. We ordered a couple of the mixed apps, chicken masala, lamb biryani, chicken tandoor, lamb saag, lamb rohan and the garlic and butter naan (I told you we ordered a lot). My son and daughter loved their lamb biryani and chicken tandoor. I tried both and the biryani was well spiced and the chicken tandoor was seasoned with an excellent smokey flavor. My chicken masala (spicy of course) was creamy and just a dream to eat. My brother/brother-in-law's lamb dishes were very tasty too - well spiced and filled with flavor. BTW, the apps were tasty and the naan were generous portions and not greasy. I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a very good Indian dinner. read more

The Royal India has been around for quite some years now, even before Indian food became somewhat hipster in SLC. Fast forward to last paragraph for nutshell review. Since opening, there has been numerous other Indian restaurants in town open up. Some better, many worse. I have a soft spot for Royal India, having come for so long. The service is always top notch, even if it's much more crowded than years ago. Hipster cool is a blessing and a curse. Now I do not live in Utah, but when I come back to visit, Royal India is always on the list. My go to's are- Mango lassi- homemade and delicious. When eating at any Indian restaurant, I always order one and that is one of the things I use to compare. Hands down, Royal India makes one of the best. Samosas- always good, and big in size compared to other places. Make sure to order the mint and tamarind chutney to go song with it, they are delicious. Chicken kurma- "Chicken cooked in cream, ginger, garlic, nuts and spices". This dish is always solid here, with the right amount of chicken and creaminess texture. To go along with my main dish, I always order the Peshwari naan. "Indian bread with stuffed with cashewnuts, raisins, coconut baked in Tandoor" The peshwari naan is always amazing here, and this is another item I order at all Indian restaurants. Not many places can make this very well. Many times the ingredients inside the naan get mushed and lumped together. Royal India's is always consistent. In a nutshell, there are now many other options for Indian in Utah. Maybe a few better, many more worse. Royal India is my spot, partly for sentimental reasons, mostly for the always great service and always consistent food. I know what taste I am going to get here, there are no "off" nights. Another fantastic couple of meals for me at Royal India on my recent trip. On two occasions everything was amazing - the vegetable pakoras are among my favorite anywhere, and their vegetable korma is incredibly flavorful. The South Indian sampler offers a nice variety of flavorful food as well. Great service. Oh, and the samosas are actually made here unlike just about every other place in the SLC area that uses pre-made frozen ones. Think about it. read more

Visiting Salt Lake City for work from the San Francisco Bay Area, I honestly didn't know what kind of food to expect here. For some reason I was thinking there would be a lot of American food... lots and lots of it. I was definitely pleasantly surprised when I came across this little gem of a restaurant! Went in for dinner on a Monday night, and the parking lot seemed pretty empty. The restaurant only had maybe 3 tables occupied. But, the food was very good. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, butter naan, garlic naan, and the mango lassi. What was left when I was done? Just a little piece of Garlic Naan haha. - The masala was very flavorful. - The butter naan was heaven!! I love how their naan is long and crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. A lot of places in the Bay Area make their naan round, and sometimes too tick and not crispy. - I'm not sure if I would order the garlic naan again though. The garlic powder they sprinkle on the naan is too easily burnt, ruining the naan entirely. - Lassi was good as well, although I don't usually order this at other places, so I'm not sure if it's supposed to be as thick as it was. How was the service? It wasn't that bad. It wasn't fantastic. The manager was very nice. But there was one guy with a mustache, or facial hair of some sort, who came off a little rough around the edges. When I was done he came by and said "You done?" and collected my plates, instead of the usual courteous "How was your meal? Are you finished? May I collect your plates?" Oh well. That's the only reason I'm docking a star. Plus, I haven't tried anything else to give a definitive rating for the entire restaurant. Chicken Tikka Masala had nice pieces of chicken, but the spice level was a bit more than what we normally like when we go out for Indian food. We asked for mild to medium, but we were guzzling more water throughout the meal. (I enjoyed the heat, but my husband was almost at the point of sending it back had his mom not sent back her Vindaloo back). So, let's talk about the Vindaloo. As the spice level was "mild", it appeared that they left out all flavor but the tomatoes and vinegar. Luckily, the Royal Paneer was a better option as it had onions and peppers to add more dimension to the dish. Naan was a bit oiler than what we prefer, but it was good to scoop up all of the juices on my Tikka dish. When we first entered into the restaurant, their was an underlying smell of fresh paint. Came to Royal India on a date with friends. Asked the waitress BEFORE if our meals could be accommodated due to my husband having a nut allergy. She ASSURED us that it would be done. Needless to say, I am now in the E.R room because of the MISTAKE they made. They cooked my husbands bread in a pan that had cashew residue on it, when they said they would cook it SEPARATE!! DO NOT tell me that it will be cooked separately when it's not! Do NOT GO HERE if you have an allergy to nuts. They clearly DONT KNOW how to accommodate. I've been here twice with about 5 years in between the two visits. I'm not in this area much and I already have my go-to Indian places, but this spot is still worth a stop. Pros: -- Ridiculously amazing customer service. I called for take-out and the guy on the phone was one of the nicest, most helpful people I've ever talked to when placing an order. -- Food is good. Flavorful. Take out orders come with lots of rice and a fair amount of curry. Naan is great. Every curry I've tried has been tasty. Cons: -- Not a lot of meat/protein in our curries. It was mostly just sauce. -- The curry flavor wasn't as complex as the other restaurants we tend to go to. Good, but not as great as my favorite place. read more

Sorry to rain on other Yelpers' parade but this place was not good. The food itself was very mediocre and the service was - not to put to fine a point on it - terrible. The food: We always try out a new Indian place with the same menu items for consistency: chicken tikka masala, vegetable samosas, garlic naan and basmati rice. The samosas were fairly good, although the presentation was ghastly - they were served plopped on a twin-size bed of wilted, pale, indeterminate leaves on a steel trail that may have been covered in smudges or scratches, we weren't sure which. Both in flavor and consistency, the sauces were very obviously out of a jar. The garlic naan was thin and crispy and chewy - all good. But it had NO GARLIC on it - only garlic salt. This was quite frankly shocking to me. I have literally never had garlic naan at an Indian restaurant that did not come with actual garlic. When we asked for basmati rice (because we event sure if the chicken automatically came with it), we were told it already came with rice. The rice was not basmati. It was regular, short-grain white rice. Felt very cheap and stingy. The chicken tikka masala was good overall. It had a nice creamy texture and fairly good (if somewhat lacking) flavor. But the chicken pieces were enormous and had to be sawn through with our forks (we were only given forks, not even the option of a knife). The service: We had no actual server, per say. We were seated by one person who dropped our menus on the table and left. An older Indian man (who frankly was the best thing about the place - authentic, sincere, smiley and genuine) took our order. A man from the kitchen brought our food out one plate at a time and pushed it across the table at us before mumbling something and leaving. A young white girl dressed in an Indian outfit who was generally wafting aimlessly around the restaurant brought our check. And an older white woman came and took our card from us. No one welcomed us or even smiled (other than the Indian gentleman). When we arrived there were 45 minutes to closing time. They brought all our food out at once (starters and all) and put our check on the table when we were halfway though eating. Overall, the whole place felt cheap and badly done, from the decor to the cleanliness to the food. It was honestly sad because they clearly have the know-how amongst them to do better but for some strange reason, they don't. Very disappointing. Don't waste your money here; go to Bombay House - they'll give you an amazing Indian meal and service in beautiful surroundings for the same price. read more
