I was on a visit to Colgate university when I tried this restaurant. It was the best Indian curry I had in my life. I had the fish curry with bread and rice. Everything was seasoned and flavored strongly. The bread was really tasty. The restaurant was also quiet with fast service. We had a large party but the food was served really fast. I strongly recommend if you are visiting the college town. The town itself is a little bit sad with few stores open. It felt like an old movie. So I was really surprised to find something this tasty. I wish they have curries of this quality around where I live as well. read more

I'm not at all surprised that Royal India currently has a 4.4 Yelp rating. I rate it 5 without question. We stopped in for dinner, fairly early, and the place was almost empty. But it quickly started to fill up. It never got very loud, and the interior has a very clean, plain, and pleasant vibe with large store windows in front looking out on the street. We started with the Cheese Pakora, then the Chicken Vindaloo and Navratan Korma, with Onion Naan. Spice level "medium" all around. Food orders were all very fresh ingredients, and spiced at just the right level of heat. These are all the classic Indian dishes prepared served so typically in Indian restaurants. In this case, though, they were as good or better than I usually have at other places. The order was taken promptly, and the food arrived without delay. Server was quite attentive. Definitely among the places to dine-in or take-out in Hamilton. read more

We have been a few times, but each time it is hit or miss. It's hard to say that it's not "traditional" Indian cuisine, because India has MANY different versions of the traditional cuisines based on their location in India. However when their own recipe for their biryani says that it comes with nuts & raisins, yet there is not a single nut OR rasin in sight. That's when I tend to say that they got it incorrect. My partner and I were sorely disappointed to find that, despite the window sign advertising a Friday night special dinner buffet, that was not the case. After arranging for a baby-sitter, we showed up on a Friday night for date night, ready to feast, only to find the buffet station completely covered in plastic. Apparently the buffet has been indefinitely discontinued due to COVID. The interior, clean and elegant in a basic way, did have nicely spaced tables. And so we ordered delivery a few days later, tepidly. But we were delighted to find that the food was delicious. We ordered a chicken biryani and a goat vindaloo, which came with white basmati rice. The biryani was wonderfully spiced and had ample chunks of chicken. The goat vindaloo was mildly spicy but also flavorful. My only complaint was that I wish it had been saucier to accompany the white rice. The order was delivered promptly. Both entrees were well-sized and reasonably priced. Definitely one of the better restaurant options in New Hartford. read more

My husband and I wanted to try a new Indian restaurant so we make the trek to Hamilton. It was totally worth it!! The restaurant was clean and elegant. The service was awesome. We had appetizers, bread, and 2 completely different entrees so we could get a good representation. The quality of everything was terrific. Delicious vindaloo ordered to our level of spiciness (lamb for hubby and chicken for me) served with rice. Also an order of garlic naan. All very good and served hot. They were doing a big take out business the night we were there. We had a very accommodating server. Would definitely recommend. Quite a fine Indian place on the main drag in Hamilton. Popped in here for the reasonable lunch buffet they and it was great! The food was hot, delicious, and plenty of it! The fresh mango juice was a nice touch. The naan bread was outrageously good and brought fresh to our table. The service was very friendly, attentive, and accommodating to a large group of 8 people. This is the first time I ever tried Indian food (at a restaurant) and it got me hooked! I can attest for my brother and mom too. The dishes are delicious with a generous serving of rice and naan on the side. I recommend taking advantage of their lunch buffet deal, but if you go for dinner definitely order the chicken madras (the tamarind one - divine!) I also know people feel incredibly heavy/bloated after this food. Luckily, RIG offers some black licorice-esque candy at the desk. My sister and I were up in Hamilton, NY (a village that's home to Colgate U) for her water polo tournament and discovered Royal India Grill while walking through town. We were a little skeptical considering that Hamilton is a small town and an Indian restaurant seemed really out of place amongst the pizza parlors, delis, Subway, and Dunkin Donuts surrounding it. But since their lunch buffet sign outside said "$7.95 AYCE" we decided it was worth a gamble. Royal turned out to be a pleasant surprise, better even than some of the Indian lunch buffets I've tried in NYC. The only meat offered in their lunch buffet was chicken and though I would have liked more variety in terms of meat, they had a fair-sized spread of curries, veggies, chutneys, and more. My favorite was the chicken saag (spinach based curry with chicken) and my sister's favorite was the tandoori chicken (grilled turmeric chicken). The basmati rice was fresh and cooked properly, and the naan basket never went empty. The server even went around the tables with hot-out-of-the-oven naan each time a new batch came out. Great service! If I'm ever in Hamilton again, I'll be having lunch at Royal. read more

A much needed establishment in Hamilton. The food itself is pretty good, slightly below average compared to Indian restaurants in cities but when I was craving Indian, Royal India Grill was a good (and only) option. I've been probably 5 or so times and the staff is generally very nice. However, there was one night when the wait time was ridiculously long. It was the night after Colgate's Commencement. We waited atleast 20-30 minutes for everything (for someone to come take our order, for the food, etc.) I understand that it was a busy night but I'd expect them to be prepared for what would obviously be one of the busier nights. Overall, so glad that Royal India Grill was in Hamilton but being that it's in Hamilton definitely helped earn my sympathy stars. read more

Food was very good. Unfortunately, service was lacking. I ordered a medium hot lamb tikka masala and received a VERY mild shrimp tikka masala (pretty sure lamb and shrimp sound very different). We ordered two chai teas with dinner and had to ask for them four times before they were received. Multiple requests had to be made for napkins. Fact is, we were cautious. Moving to a small town, you can't be sure what you'll get out of an Indian food restaurant - with a lunch buffet. The second we walked in, we knew this was good. From the rotation of the foods in the buffet, to the elegant and authentic salad and chutney options, the Royal India Grill is awesome. No, it isn't remotely hot, but you can add hot sauce. We visited the Royal India Grill while in Hamilton to attend a play at the Palace Theatre. Some of the food was 5-star, some not so much with a bit of a fumble in service so I'm rating a 3 overall. We started with samosas and my husband had the Special soup. The soup came out pretty quickly and was 5-star. We had to ask where the samosas were and when they finally arrived they were freshly made but a little greasy and somewhat disappointing as they were made with what seemed to be hash browns instead of mashed potatoes and lacked in flavor. Our entrees were Lamb Tikka Masala and Sag Paneer. The lamb was delicious. The Sag Paneer was "ok" but it did not have the same flavor we are used to at our Syracuse favorites or other Indian we've had around the country. Clearly a different take on a common dish but one that didn't quite hit the mark for me. I would have given 4-stars but service was pretty spotty. It took some time before anyone came to our table and we did have to track down the samosas which I think were perhaps forgotten when the order was input for the kitchen. Since we were heading to the play we had to quickly grab the waiter for our check to make sure we made it in time. I'd go back if I find myself back in Hamilton but won't be making a special trip to visit. read more

Chicken Tikka Saag was excellent as well as the China Bhunna. The chicken in the Chicken Curry was tough. I understand the need to cook chicken, lamb/other before adding into their magnificent sauces, but it doesn't give the meat enough time to marinade. With that said, would highly recommend. read more

Wow, never thought I would find any ethnic foods in this town (no offense, it's just tiny!), but we drove past this place on the way to the Hamilton Theater! Like many other Indian restaurants in other cities, they have their signature Indian Buffet was a larger selection of foods than I'm used to, but that is fantastic! All the food was piping hot (temperature) and not too hot (spicy). You have your meats and your vegetarian options and a generous salad bar with desserts (usually rice pudding and mango pudding). They also have an a la carte menu with your mango lassis (and sweet lassi... not sure what that is) and Indian ice cream (which they ran out of when we went). They open at 11:30AM and their buffet is now $8.95 (not $7.95 like one of the photos says). Each meal comes with naan! mmmm naan. read more

I was in town for a swim meet and thought I would try it. I ordered to go because I just wanted to get back to my room after a long day. They had no mango chutney. They also had no plastic utensils. The food was ok but the Chicken tikka Masala was very sweet. It had bell peppers in it, which is the first time I've seen that. Maybe that is why it was sweeter than what I've had before. They were very apologetic and about not having things I asked for. If I ever return to Hamilton though I don't think I would return to Royal India. So...two stars. read more

Ordered take-out. Asked for two naan, received one soggy thick naan cut in half. Saag paneer was ok; heavy on the spinach, poorly balanced. Malai kafta was pretty disappointing: very thin flavorless sauce, a few giant kaftas, and absolutely nothing else. We were given three dipping sauces (with nothing to dip): a flavorless pickled onion chutney, a mint chutney that was ok, and a third sauce reminiscent of dilute steak sauce.
