I'm surprised at the high rating... the high rating is what keeps leading me back to this donut shop. I've been three times now, from early morning to late afternoon (which I think allows me an opportunity to give a fair assessment) and every time the donuts had an oily taste, which I personally don't like. I don't doubt that some people love this place. But if you're like me and don't like that oily taste that some donut places have, then this is not the donut shop for you. In comparison, places that I love that don't have that oily taste but instead the bread is fresh and fluffy: Leberry, Colorado Donuts, California Donut, Donut Snob, Donut Bar, Donut Man, to name a few nicer places. Places that I've tried that are more local that are ok (and don't have that oily taste but the bread isn't thaaaat great): Gladstone's, Tastee's, and Pronto. I've yet to find a local donut place in Pasadena that is really good though... so maybe that's the problem... I may update this review as I explore more. read more

After coming to Royal Donuts, I always feel like such a big fat loser. You see, they sell donuts and lottery tickets here. And ever so often, I stop here for a donut and lottery ticket. Of course, it always turns into a no-win situation. I gain poundage from eating donuts and I lose money from playing lotto. ARGH! The donuts here are made fresh daily in the mornings...but I always come here in the evenings. So they taste alright to me. I think donuts are best when they are just made. That's when they are at the peak of their freshness. After that, the taste deteriorates by the hour. So the donuts here probably taste better in the mornings. In these hard economic times when unemployment is high and money is tight, it is still good to know that we don't need to rely on corporate donut Fridays to enjoy a cruller or a fritter. And even more importantly, the price of hope is still affordable. Thank you, Royal Donuts for filling that void with your donuts. And thank you for making hope available until the next lotto drawing. Royal Donuts is a great spot to grab some fairly priced ham & cheese croissants for an on-the-go breakfast, but the coffee is gross-- tastes like bitter diluted coffee. I'd recommend grabbing a donut/breakfast pastry from here and then going to starbucks for coffee a few blocks down instead. read more

best classic donuts in the area. my go to's anywhere are chocolate old fashioned, cruller, and chocolate buttermilk and all 3 here hit on every level. the owner told me about how they mix different chocolates for the tops, which you really can taste the difference. cakes are dense, yet moist with great flavor alone. devil's food tastes like chocolate, instead of food dye. glaze goods send krispy k into the void read more

Yummy & fresh donuts. Nice & fast service. Decent price. Got apple fritter, 3 glazed rings, blueberry (my fav!), plain donut. All tasty and less than $5.50. My only complaint is the parking and busy street. It's not this shops fault but it's easy to miss and little difficult to get in to. Look for the domino's pizza sign. It's in the same plaza. Love this donut shop. We come here weekly. It has been horrible for my postpartum body. Lol! But yummy to my lips. Crazy how something so amazing can satisfy your mouth but have dire consequences on the tummy. hehe I love everything I have got here. The donut holes are really Delicious. I came here Friday night around 10:15 and they close at 11 PM. But still had a pretty good selection of donuts, about 5 trays! I got the cinnamon twist & bear claw for $3 total. The cinnamon twist was basically just like a glazed donut with EXTRA glaze and a hint of cinnamon sugar. I couldn't really taste the cinnamon. I would've liked it better if the cinnamon taste was more apparent since I LOVE anything cinnamon. The bear claw was super delicious! My boyfriend got that donut but I basically ate half..... Oops sorry LOL there were either diced pears/apples in it too! That made it even better :) it's a pretty big donut so it is filling especially if you eat it after a big meal. Great basic donut shop! Nothing too special but a great place to stop by if you're out late and craving donuts since they close later than most donut shops. Pleasantly surprised with this place. This is a mom and pop store and there was a younger guy who did not speak a lick of English but the lady took care of everything. I stopped by due to the good reviews and wanted to treat my team to something sweet. I didn't realize donuts were so cheap! And this place had plenty of parking at 9:05am. Prices: Dozen Cake + Glazed Mix - $8.35 Glazed - $.85 Bagel w/ Cream Cheese - $1.55 Ham & Cheese Croissant Sandwich - $4.29 I ended up purchasing 16 donuts, 2 bagels, a dozen donut holes, and a Croissant Sandwich for $24.05. So far, my coworkers have positive comments on the texture and sweetness of the donuts so it's a big win for me! The donuts were okay, nothing to write home about so I figured I'd yelp about their service instead. To put it kindly, it was severely lacking and I was the only one there at the time! The man taking care of me got my order wrong. Instead of creme filled I got one that looked like the creme filled but was completely barren and there was no way for me to tell, I thought he would've known better! Yep, As Good As It Gets! It is great to know that the donuts are made fresh even when you stop in at 6am on a weekday. These must be baked early in the a.m. I just moved to the area so I picked up a dozen and a half for co-workers a couple days ago. Wow! These are baked fresh and the variety is amazing. My co-workers were very happy. So, I went back a couple days later to pick up a few and got a couple of my co-workers' favorites. The Apple Fritter was incredible and better than an "org*$m." The chocolate donut was a "wow, this is great." The Maple Bar got a "this is the Best donut I have ever had." And for me, the buttermilk was delicious - Not too sweet, but you could taste the buttermilk; Not too soft, but soft enough melt in your mouth with a warm cup of coffee. I had not been a big donut fan in the past, but these are truly delicious. No more krispys from Harbucks. read more

I come every Sunday and it's not too busy but always fresh donuts. You have to try the powered sugar so fresh and fluffy. The donuts are great taste perfect and never stale!! AWESOME donuts! Just moved to Pasadena from Illinois and I love all sorts of donuts as does my husband. Krispy Kreme was usually my down fall - however, this place absolutely just as good! We went for our first time last weekend around 10am and expected to have no donuts to choose from (since it was so late in the morning). Not a problems at all! This place is highlighly underrated! I am a bit concerned about sharing this place for fear there will now be a line and the selection will be low by 10am, haha. I usually don't like to give mom and pop shops negative reviews, but man the glazed twist donut I got here was just so terrible. It tasted like it was fried in bad oil, so it had an almost chemical type of taste to it. I took a bite, thought it was bad, took another bite just to be sure, and then had to toss the rest. I came here instead of my normal La Canada Donut place because I was in the area, and I was sold! I will drive here rather than the local shop even though its twice as long of a drive. There old fashion chocolate donuts are fantastic! I didn't like it as much on my first bite, but they really grew on me. Its moist, and delicious. I also discovered something entirely new, a crumb covered version of the glazed cinnamon roll. I'm not sure why every store that sells a similar roll doesn't have this version, but its a distinct improvement! My dad, who is really a fan of cinnamon rolls agrees that this addition is well worth it. Not sure about anything else, but there are usually a few people inside every time i come by. OH, caution, some of the donuts I listed are sold out by 9a on some days, so be aware of that. read more

This is only for the ham & cheese croissants. There about $3 a pop. It's about the typical size of any other ham & cheese. She was nice enough to offer to toast if up. If I had time I would've but couldn't. The filling was not much there was definitely a lot more bread than filling. It wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. Just average. The doughnuts were distinctly okay. The boyfriend and I got a maple bar, buttermilk doughnut, and doughnut holes. We went at 11, so definitely not extremely fresh, but shouldn't be that old either. The maple bar was decent. Not amazing but certainly not awful. The glaze wasn't awful like some places, but not really anything to remark upon either. The doughnut holes seemed like they were already getting stale. Again not awful but nothing to remark on. The buttermilk doughnut I actually liked really well. I think the cake-like texture let it age a bit better than the raised doughnuts so it didn't have the edge of staleness creeping in. The texture was good, and not overly dense or greasy. The buttermilk flavor was there without being overpowering. All in all, if you are a buttermilk doughnut fan I would try here, but otherwise it isn't remarkable. read more

Been here twice. The bagels and donuts are good, but the croissants are kind of mushy - not very flaky. The selection is low after 10am.

As it was national donut day, I decided to swing by and partake in the madness. I'd just eaten a delicious breakfast burrito across the street at Lucky Boy, so this was the closest place. It's a tiny shop, and certainly not the cleanest or most upkept. Luckily they still had a small assortment left, so I ordered a chocolate custard. While I can say that the donut was delish, and the pricing great, the 'cash only' policy is ridiculous...it's 2015, and you're in LA! I did see that they have an ATM in the corner, but that's no excuse. All in all, I don't see myself returning to this place. read more

The donuts were soft on the inside, almost like air, and crunchy on the outside. The buttermilk donut and the sugar twist were out of this world. They were perfectly sweetened, not over the top. This is a great small donut shop that is owned and operated by a man that takes great care in producing a high quality donut. Nothing fancy, but you will find a great powdered sugar raised, glazed/honey-dipped, or cinnamon roll treat waiting for you. The only drawback is that the selection does get depleted quickly. So to have your choice get there before 9:00 AM. read more

so i'm always tempted to stop by and grab a donut. it's definitely not a good addiction in terms of dieting but man, does my tummy thank me for it. i usually get their crumb donut and its delicious. their donuts here are fresh and fluffy. i love it. i also have had their maple bars and theyre pretty good. theyre huge and by the end i'm exhausted from the amount of sugar intake. the little donut holes are perfect for a little bite size snack as well. the parking lot is pretty large. you can only turn one direction out of there onto arroyo parkway which is a bummer because it's never the way i need to go. regardless its worth the donut read more
