The Royal Buffet was the hidden gem we never knew we needed in our life. We stopped in about an hour before close, so we weren't sure what to expect, but the buffet still had a decent amount of food. Everything tasted delicious! My two favorites were the coconut shrimp & the green beans. Both had so much flavor. I'm still thinking about the shrimp. There was also a cold bar which had lots of tasty options. The desserts were amazing. I really enjoyed the cakes & jellos. You could also order take out and the prices were very reasonable! The food was delicious. Everything was fresh. We couldn't have asked for a better dinner! read more

Very nice little buffet. Chicken sticks are out of this world good.Great prices. They let you carry out by the pound, and elderly Asian lady got upset when we asked for more chicken sticks to take home via the buffet "by the pound," insisting that we had to order them off the menu. Well then, why do you have a "by the pound" option? Note, went today June 8th, and there is handwritten sign on posterboard that says they're closed for "summer vacation" until July 5th. read more

Looking all over this rural area we never stopped to see the Royal Buffet in front of our faces. When we did, we hesitated because after all, this is corn country. Only when some young relatives told us it was good did we go, and we were very glad we did. We found it to be a very good mom and pop Chinese restaurant with plenty of tables and booths and reasonable prices which I would put on the low-moderate tier. The best characteristic of the food is that it is not as sugary sweet as most American Chinese food usually is. The honey chicken, sweet and sour chicken, bourbon chicken and orange chicken all flavorful, cooked to a perfect doneness, and NOT overly sweet. Egg rolls were very good and the crab rangoon rated a ' best ever' from the other half. My one comment is that General Tsaos chicken is pretty mild, not as hot as I think it should be, and I did not find any of the actual hot beans usually associated with it. Definitely going to be a frequent stop for us. read more

Went here a while back with my wife. The food was not the freshest, as is usually the case with a buffet, but it was not as bad as others I've been to either. Most of the food was still pretty hot and tasted decent, though nothing amazing. My favorite they had was the crab rangoon, which was far from the best I've ever had, but was still pretty good. Other than that, everything tasted fairly standard and wasn't particularly spectacular. You can get some good value, as the all-you-can-eat buffet is about $10, but there are certainly better options out there (just not in Demotte, unfortunately). Not a terrible spot for a meal, but not my first choice. read more

We just moved in the area, and decided to get Chinese take out from the closest place. What a mistake. We got the fried dumplings and crab rangoon. The crab rangoon should have been called cream cheese rangoon. There was no crab there. My husband has the pepper steak, and I had the Dragon and Phoenix. Both had zero flavor. We got the fried rice. It tasted funny, had no vegetables in it, and looked like plain rice with yellow food covering. We will not order again. read more

Excellent food and service. For a smaller town where it's not cost effective to rotate foods and keep items continually fresh, Royal Buffet does a great job at serving terrific, freshly made food. I've never had any problems with my orders here. And he owners have come to know us and our usual order - often offering us free drinks, yearly calendars, or just a side item at no cost. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good Chinese food! read more

I have been going to this restaurant for many years. I usually just got take out. I decided to eat the buffet this time with my brother in law. It was very good. I was pleasantly surprised. Service was excellent as we didn't have to wait to get our used plates taken away. The assortment of dishes was very good. They have three sections. Main dishes, desserts and fried items. My brother in law couldn't stop commenting on how good the food was. We both over ate. Very good dinner and very inexpensive. read more

After reading some of the reviews, I felt that It would be fair to provide an updated description of this restaurant. I agree that for some time, the food, service and cleanliness was bad. My wife and I had quit going there a while back. But when we heard that there were new owners, we decided to give it another chance. I must say, we were pleasantly surprised. The decor, while not the best, is much more appealing than before. The buffet is much, much better. If you do go here for the buffet, remember that DeMotte is a small town so it doesn't receive as much traffic flow as say BC Osaka in Merrillville or Dynasty Buffet in Valpo. So, in order to keep the food fresh and from being wasteful, it is brought out in smaller portions to the buffet counters. But the new owners are very attentive and will quickly make more if they determine that there isn't going to be enough for their customers. There is an additional buffet now which has allowed them to nearly double the hot food options. I have never been a fan of the self serve community ice cream bucket for desert but that seems to be a common practice in most smaller Chinese buffet locations. Other than that, the desert options are sufficient. It appears to be a young couple that became the new owners and they have a couple of children. It is customary for them to be there so that they are able to spend time with them while they work. This isn't a bad thing. So, if you've had a bad experience here in the past, give the place and the owners another chance. Welcome them to the neighborhood. If you have never been here before and want to give it a try, I think you will be surprised what a small town Chinese buffet will serve you. Now that we have tried the buffet, we will be trying the extensive carry out menu next. I would give this location 3 1/2 stars. read more
