Don't be misled by the name, your past experiences or other expectations for "diner food," as some other reviewers seem to have been. This isn't your typical neon and chrome clad diner with greasy menus and greasier food. THE best brunch I've had since moving to Boston from Philly 2.5 years ago. Easily bests places both nearby (Centre Street Cafe - seriously why the line???, Sorrella's), and far more expensive (Aquitaine). They just got it right. Well worth the short drive to W.Roxbury. Cute, comfortable, friendly staff and delicious food and great presentation. Brunch staples done with care and creative specials. Ah this place was great! My friend and I went on Sunday and were delighted to find a parking spot right out front and while it was busy, there was no wait! We of course had to start the morning off with Mimosas. Delicious and surprisingly strong - I think I got a little buzz off one. They had some amazing Lobster specials but I was trying to be good so I got the Mushroom/Asparagus/Swiss omelette that was to die for! The asparagus had a wonderful roasted flavor. The home fries were pretty awesome too. I've been trying to stay low carb but just couldn't resist! My friend had the special Lobster/Chive/Goat Cheese omelette which she thought was great (I just don't like goat cheese). I can't wait to bring my mom here and try more specials and drinks. The only reason I'm not giving Rox 5 stars is because I wish it was bigger!!! Waiting in line is a bit awkward (particularly when raining) because you wait in a small door entryway. Don't expect to get right in for brunch (which I love here!!) -I'd go on the later end of brunch and be patient, they are pretty quick to turn around tables. I've only been to brunch and it is amazing!!! They have such fun varieties of pancakes, waffles, and French toast. I've gotten their omelette with apples and bacon multiple times and it never disappoints. No one in my party has ever been anything but ecstatic with how their good came out. read more

What a find! A quick search on Yelp after dropping off the Fella's car at a nearby mechanic brought us here, I'm happy to report. A couple of minutes' wait (with a paper from the machine outside) got us a table for two. Fresh decaf all around and we were ready to check out the menu. Lots to choose from, I don't think my eyes made it all the way through the breakfast menu. I saw key breakfast words like Nutella and I knew I was at the right place. The specials caught me, I got the Chourizo hash, with toast, home fries and two eggs. It was so so so good. And so much food, I had enough for breakfast the next day. Fella had the classic, with two eggs, sausage, bacon (I said it looked like bacon from a commercial, perfect, thick and cooked just right), and toast. He also got French Toast! Guess he couldn't resist, and we shared a bowl of fruit (grapes, melon, blueberries, banana, pineapple). The bread is brought in from a local bakery. After we were done eating, we read the paper and I fucked up a crossword puzzle. We had two refills of coffee each, then called it quits when people started lining up at the door. For all that food, our bill was only $26. Not bad for a breakfast and lunch on a Saturday in the city. Now THIS is a diner! Breakfast served all day? Check. Burgers, beer, french fries? Check. Giant, triple-decker sandwiches? Check. The only downside to Rox is that the place is tiny, so if there's a rush of people or if you have a large group, it may not be the best choice to dine here. 3.5 stars We had some time late on a Friday morning to go and check out the Rox Diner. This was our second attempt, the first being a mission abort when it was shut for renovations. (Speaking of which, I noticed that a business next door is empty, they should really consider busting down a wall or two.) There was no wait when we went, but after being inside, I can see why there is usually an insane wait for a table. In fact, knowing what I now know about the Diner, I am not sure we will be back very often because it seems inevitable that any time we could go on the weekend will involve waiting. As for the food, we both ordered some scrambled eggs with cheese. It sort of came with two slices of not-very-high-quality cheese melted on top. Not great. My bacon (I got extra after leaving off the sausage) was excellent. My husband's sausage looked pretty sad and I think it tasted like it looked. Now for the french toast: I am not usually one to order french toast, but it was later in the morning and I was hungry. I think all of their french toast is on brioche bread-- it was pretty amazing. It might be some of the best french toast I've ever eaten. The texture and sweetness of the bread are absolutely perfect. Yummy real maple syrup is a yes, yes, yes. So, in short, excellent, top of the line french toast with real maple syrup. Eggs may be good, but could we get some Cabot or other high-grade cheese with that, not whatever we ended up with? The usual rule is "no three-star reviews." If I don't have strong feelings about a spot, one way or another, why write about it at all? Well, in the case of Auntie B's, there are strong arguments for both a positive and negative review. Auntie B has a lot of soft variables going for it. It's a thimble-sized joint right on the main drag. It's like one of those New York apartments where you can flip your omelet while sitting on the toilet. One very adroit and spunky woman (Auntie B, is that you?) runs around like the Tasmanian Devil while refreshing your coffee and getting your eggs. There is cuteness and pluck to spare! The coffee's pretty good too. Alas, the food's nothing to write home about. What can you do? Let's face it, going out for breakfast isn't always the best idea. Most breakfast foods are super-simple to make at home. You can save time and money at home and spend both of those when you go out to FancyDinner. (Making dinner is exhausting and there's more chance you'll screw it up.) You won't go very wrong with Auntie B's but, I'm going to be honest, this is hardly on par with Columbus discovering America. read more

This sweet spot strikes a balance between old-school classic and slightly gussied-up charmer. First, they take a no frills perfect diner. Then they add great locally baked bread, hormone free breakfast meats, and excellent french toast and omlette specials. They use old comic books to make the menus, have funny artwork and a series of well named specials (Scramblin' Man etc.) The portions are generous, the menu extensive and the prices seem great (about half that of Centre St. Cafe in JP). Sure, there are a few things they lack--weak coffee, no fresh squeeze oj, great pancakes but no waffles, and you pay extra for real maple syrup. The physical space is kinda cramped. I respect these things because they show that this isn't some fancy joint. Beyond all the specifics, they love what they do and I can prove it: the first time I went in was a mid-day weekend with friends. One friend elected to order a lunch item-- humbly entitled the world's best grilled cheese sandwich. Seeing that other items including avocado and grilled mushrooms and onions, he asked if he'd be pushing his luck to include these things. They said "heck no" (and seem like a place that would always substitute if they could). He happened to walk through the kitchen (heading to the restroom) as the waitress read his order to the chef/owners. When she described what he wanted, the owners said "niiiice" with approving gusto. It's good to see folks who appreciate and respect the kind of food they make. They can get quite busy on weekend brunch times but they open super early and are usually mellow during the week. I miss the booths of the old Auntie B's interior, but now that Rox Diner has officially been remodeled inside and rebranded - I love coming here even more! I've had eggs, french toast and pancakes here - havent been brave enough to try their special stuffed brioche even though it looks AMAZING. But as a pancake fanatic, I love theirs! They truly taste homemade, and they cook their bacon the best way - super crispy. The only reason why I give Rox Diner a 4-star review instead of 5, is because the service can be a bit slow - but it is understandle considering the crowds of people that they take care of on weekend mornings. I wish I could give a 4.5 because that would be a better indication of how I feel about this place. My girlfriend and I love going to the Rox Diner. I've always been rather particular about going out to breakfast and the Spring St Cafe just hasn't done the job for me, but luckily there is the Rox. I can't say enough about the food. I usually get the Rox which is 2 scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, french toast, and regular toast and breakfast potatoes. All of it is excellent. I never have any complaints about their food. Their pancakes are very solid as well, I just prefer the french toast. I haven't ventured too far into their menu apart from that and a couple of other items, but I haven't heard a bad thing about anything on their menu. The service there is excellent 99% of the time and they truly do the best they can, even when it's extremely busy on weekend mornings. Prices are about what you would expect for breakfast, and some item menus are truly a bargain. The only thing that keeps me from giving it a 5 star rating is the size. It's small, and it's a bit cramped, especially when it's busy. If I move my elbow in the wrong direction, I have a solid chance of hitting someone else by accident. I don't know how the waitresses manage it so props to them. If you get a booth then you'll be fine, but the tables leave a bit of room for improvement. If I could take the Rox, and give it the space of the West Roxbury pub next door, it'd be a perfect 10 for me. read more

If you're looking to beef up the t-shirt collection they even have some original work that staff have designed. Five stars are in the picture, but I've only been there twice, but both times have been solid experiences. Food is cooked to order and is quite tasty, the menu's got some creative options(say YES to the nutella french toast!!) and prices are quite reasonable. They even serve freshly squeezed orange juice from the space-aged contraption in the kitchen. The place isn't terribly big and they get pretty busy on weekends so set expectations accordingly. I feel bad about coming here for the last several years and just getting around to writing a review now. Shame on me. This is a neighborhood gem. Service is fast, food is fresh, and everything is cheap! I recommend one of the sandwich creations, the closer is my favorite. These offer are a little less food, which I recommend as the portions here are massive. They have fresh squeezed OJ and actually good ice coffee. It's impossible to find a place with good breakfast and good coffee. West Rox is definitely the exception. I hope to some day try dinner. This has been my go to for breakfast. read more

There was a bit of a wait because the restaurant is super tiny. Finally when it was our turn to be seated my friend and I requested a booth because of our large bags and the waitress got an attitude with us. We waited 25 minutes for our food which is pretty long for breakfast. No one came over to give us updates on when the good would be out. The restaurant was super cold and by the time our food came out it was cold because of this. I got the Isabella with the chocolate banana mascarpone pancake and an over medium egg. My egg was super runny. The pancake was delicious but cold. My friend ordered steak and eggs with a medium steak and it came out super rare and bloody. Regardless of this, the food was super good and fresh. The prices are fair as well and the menu has a lot of variety on it. They also serve mimosas which always wins me over. read more

Got the Rox, which was "two" (I put this is quotations because it felt more like four) eggs, sausage, bacon, home fries, and french toast. Home fries were my favorite part! The best of the best. My all time favorite place to eat breakfast. Food: Excellent Irish breakfast, homemade hash, benedicts, fruit/yogurt/granola. Honestly I have been here at least 100 times and have never had anything I did not enjoy. Interior: Very pleasant, comfortable seating, bar area for individual patrons. Service: Excellent. The wait staff are attentive and friendly. Family friendly. Location: right in the center of West Roxbury, there is usually sufficient on street parking. Rarely I park on an adjacent side street. Timing: weekdays are the best time to go, since this place is rightfully very popular on weekends. I would not recommend arriving at 9 am on a Saturday unless you are willing to wait for a bit. Been here for breakfast once. The line is crazy but is worth the wait if you have the time. They are quick on their service, but not in a bad way where they are trying to get you out. In a party of three, we got to try a good variety of meals for breakfast. I personally had the banana nutella french toast which was pretty good. I heard on NPR recently that small business is one of the only segments of our economy that continues to grow in the current (crummy) climate. One breakfast at Auntie B's Place, and you'll understand why. 1. Great food. The menu is expansive, with lots of new takes on old favorites (witty titles like Scrambling Man and Gentleman Jim will make you smile). Our waitress suggested Tahitian French Toast, a special that didn't make it on menu. Brioche french toast stuffed with fresh sliced mango encased in a coating of shredded coconut? Yes, please! As soon as I heard the words mango and coconut, I was sold. So was my husband. We both ordered it. Woah. Yum. It was soft and crunchy with the perfect hint of sweetness tempered by the tartness of the mango. Does it get any better? Our meal went like this: Nom nom nom nom, oh wait must eat home fry, nom nom mango, ooooh brioche coconut. BACON! Nom nom. Damn, I'm full. "Mango is a seriously underutilized fruit," my husband commented between bites. This take on french toast certainly makes the most of it. 2. Great prices. Breakfast for two, including coffee, juice and a side will run you less than $20, depending on what you get. Portions were very generous; enough so that we were able to take 3 full stuffed slices of french toast with us to the beach. They also serve lunch at similarly friendly prices. 3. Great atmosphere. Auntie B's Place is not slick. It is not new. It is a neighborhood joint with vinyl booths, a breakfast bar, framed pictures of Red Sox heroes, and a chalkboard menu on the wall behind the counter. It also has a friendly staff, who "God bless you" if you sneeze, lots of local families enjoying good food and each other, and, if you're lucky, "Copacabana" playing on the radio. So I love the Rox Diner. We've been several times for brunch and I love the nutella and banana french toast. I also have gotten the "one heck of a breakfast sandwich", which is yummy. Like most breakfast places, there seems to be an infinite number of ways to combine eggs, meat, and pancakes but they are very helpful in finding the easiest and cheapest option. We went once for dinner and I had a great burger (farmer something) and my gentleman friend had fish tacos. Good food, good prices, clean, friendly. The Rox Diner is great. read more

I've lived in West Roxbury for two years and never tried Auntie B's because I assumed it would be just another greasy diner with mediocre food. After a pastry chef friend told me the food is really good I decided to give it a try. Wow! The menu is very expansive and creative. I had a tomato, garlic and smoked Gouda omelet (delicious) and blackberry with walnut pancakes. I don't even really like pancakes but these were amazing. The potatoes were really good. The english muffin was homemade. The BF and I finally got to try this out on a beautiful Sunday morning a couple weeks ago. We slipped in at 12:30, shortly before they started closing up, and only had to wait a few minutes for a spot at the bar. It's a tiny, legit diner with friendly waitstaff who are just as much a part of the ambiance as the wall decorations and chalkboard specials. I got the "health nut french toast" - hearty, multi-grain bread loaded with pecans, strawberries and bananas (and I opted for the real maple syrup on the side -- no sugar free for me). For the next couple hours, I proceeded to tell the BF how it really hit the spot and was so nutty and delicious. We'll definitely be going back. I plan on attacking the omelet portion of the menu next. Or perhaps the Jackie O sandwich the woman next to me ordered...mmm zucchini and eggs. read more

Pros: - super yummy lobster benny...fabulous Hollandaise sauce and absolutely worth the price - cute diner with cute decor in a cute area (yep, all around cute) Cons: - my husband's meal was delivered 5 minutes after mine (no indication as to when his would arrive when mine was delivered) - only half of my husband's meal arrived upon first delivery (was missing eggs and toast) with no explanation as to when the rest of his meal would arrive. the eggs/toast delivery was approx 3-5 minutes later. weird. - the place is small, so there is always a line spilling out onto the sidewalk. on a hot summer day without shade, the wait for a table is sweaty! - again, the place is small, so as you eat your meal, you have hungry diners waiting less than 2-3 ft away from you begging you (with their eyes) to finish up your meal so they can steal your seat. What a joy to be able to return to a favorite neighborhood restaurant and find the food even better than you remembered! That is true of the Rox Diner. My wife and I found a table with ease by showing up after the morning breakfast rush. We've been twice in the past 10 days, and each time ordered a different combination of dishes. Two that I have to call out as especially terrific - the homemade corned beef has and eggs because that meal will get you through your day and, the buttermilk pancakes, with or without fruit but by all means ask for the real maple syrup. The staff are young, friendly and attentive. The portions are generous, and the prices are very fair. This is what we all need to get us going again after being shut in for so long. read more

So, this place isn't bad, but neither is it good. It seems to be the product of opposing forces. Here's what I mean: diners are cool because they aren't. They are moderately dingy, cheap, big, carelessly waitressed, and smell like fry oil. They are so hard to love they end up being like those dogs that are so ugly they are adorable. Flash to the present: it started with small-producer beer: take something kind of lowbrow, and infuse it with enough quality to make it awesome (thanks, Anchor Steam!). It's happened to bistros, sandwiches, charcuterie, take-out Chinese food, you name it, and here is the diner version. Self-consciously a little hipper, more stylish, having better ingredients etc., but this particular iteration still has mediocre service, ok-but-not-amazing food, and just some detail work (the chairs are already scratching the hell out of the newly painted walls: the runner is just not in the right spot for the furniture) that is lacking. It's like a more expensive, sorta-better diner, which puts it directly in competition with lower-mid priced family dining aka TGI Fridays, who simply have more capital to expend on random details to please people in that price point. Again, not bad, and who knows, with a little practice, it may even become what it's trying to be. Here's hoping it does. read more

There was a slight wait, didn't realize that you could call ahead for seating. The first table we were seated at wasn't adequate for 3, so I was a little disappointed with the service at that point, but we asked to move and the hostess was able to seat us at a much larger table which made a big difference. I would've given them a 4 star review because the food was good BUT we were being harassed by a fly at our table! It was non stop flying around the table near our food. I told the waitress and she could care less and kinda joked about it. I asked if they had a fly swatter because I was getting so sick of it. The waitress came out and gave the fly swatter to my 10 year old and said she isn't good using one. So during our meal my son is trying to kill this damn fly! And she kept coming by joking about it because now my son was making this a game trying to find and kill the fly. #1 option for this waitress was to MOVE OUR TABLE! The diner wasn't full at all. Secondly, kill the thing yourself and DO NOT GIVE THE CUSTOMER A FLY SWATTER TO KILL A FLY DURING THE MEAL. Even if I thought the food was amazing, I wouldn't ever return.
