They have extremely limited seating inside, maybe enough room for 6 people total, so we ordered our food to-go. Unfortunately, after getting our food and walking down a couple of blocks, we realized that they had not given us our drinks - would have let it go, but I had ordered a mango lassi (+$2) so we walked back to the restaurant to pick it up. Unfortunately, we didn't realize until we had left on the subway that the extra dipping sauces we got (+$0.75 each) didn't make it into our bag either. The chicken tenders come with your choice of flavor - we tried the tomato aioli and medium dry rub. -The tomato aioli had a mild spice kick, was slightly sweet and had hints of Indian spices. Not quite as strong as I was hoping for but still definitely my favorite of the two flavors. -The medium dry rub was not spicy at all (surprising given other reviews that have said how spicy the food here can be) and the meat tasted a bit dry without any sauce. Was a moment when I wished we had one of the dipping sauces to pair! For the fries you can choose between original and spicy. We got one of each and I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the two - both were well seasoned and not spicy. The coleslaw was solid and the mango lassi was delicious. The chicken however was extremely tender and juicy .. really well made. The skin was mildly crispy. The level 3 spice was just enough to make you feel like it was spicy and maybe need a drink every so often, so it was a good medium level. However, I did feel like they really laid it on there with the spice rubs, as in the skin ended up being pretty powdery? Not my favorite texture. meant to try Rowdy Rooster when it first opened, then two years fast forwarded by...life am i right or what? picked up dinner back in August. did i love or hate it? neither, actually. i just liked what i got, for the most part. picked up a Big Rowdy Combo meal. it includes a Big Rowdy Sandwich, a side of Masala Fries, and a small bottle of Mango Lassi. the sando is made of crispy fried patty (you can opt for dark or white meat--i opted for dark) which is top with pickled onions, sesame yogurt, and mango chutney (you can also modify your sandwich to remove the onions, yogurt sauce, chutney)...which is all sandwich in a potato bun. you also choose your heat level--and chose "rogue" which is medium. the patty itself is fried and nice & crispy--nice balance of the actual meat not being dry or too wet. the chicken is well seasoned and if had to do it all over again, I'd probably order this sandwich without all the condiments to get a real sense of what the chicken tastes like on the roll bc to me there's too much going on with all the condiments added like the flavors don't meld together imo well and don't stand out individually that well either. like there's no flavor or creaminess from the sesame yogurt and I assume that's added to balance the heat level of the patty. the pickled onions were fine but seemed to impart a real sour flavor that really doesn't seem to go smoothly with the patty or other condiments. the mint chutney is there but i am not entirely sure why...like what is it really added. the parts of the chicken patty really excelled without the add-ons. the heat level wasn't really all that spicy (hotness wise) like it's there but not crazy. if you're thrill seeker go for the "rowdy" level of heat which i assume brings the "spicy." my main issue with the sandwich is that there is a lot going but not sure why when most of the heavy lifting is done by the patty being fried so well. while the potato roll is fine, I don't think it's the best roll for a big sandwich and would honestly would go with something like the roll that McChicken uses from McDonald. if Rowdy Rooster served this sando plain and included condiments on the side then the sandwich could be a bit more customized to the eater's taste by the eater themself, but i realize this would create a mess for in-restaurant dining and create a lot of container waste for takeout and delivery. this is a solid good sandwich for me, but not a great one. if I had one suggestion it would be keep the chicken patty and how it's seasoned and go for an homage to the classic McChicken of the late 2000s (chicken patty, a crunchy vegetable like lettuce, a cool mayo-y sandwich sauce on a sesame bun) and serve it with a South Asian influenced hot honey to drizzle over it. but who cares what i think? it's just a fried chicken sandwich that you will likely enjoy despite my minor qualms with it. the masala fries are great. wouldn't change a thing. batter-fried potato wedges are tasty and a nice side dish to the sandwich to share or hoard for oneself! can't remember if the fries came with a sauce but they really didn't need one bc of how well the batter was seasoned and fried accordingly. i forgot the meal came with a mango lassi yogurt drink. i left it in the bag, and discovered it a few days later. never tried it. but i would guess it's good as Rowdy Rooster knows what they doing. the restaurant is a small space with a few seating options. it's very much a fast casual place. it's neatly maintained and colorful. service was competent and quick. my order was neatly packed and on-time. would definitely go back to Rowdy Rooster for the masala fries and give another one of their sandwiches a try. read more

Fried chicken is an evergreen hot ticket item, but the fried chicken sandwich might be the sandwich of the decade. Fast food chains and high end restaurants alike have seen lines down the block just to try their versions. The group behind hit Indian restaurants around the city like Dhamaka, Adda, Semma, and Masalawala entered the space last year with this tiny storefront dedicated to fried chicken made with Indian spices. Just prepare to wait in a short line to get the food, as there is little space inside to sit. I was still pretty new to reintroducing chicken into my diet (after 14 years) when I visited so I'll comment on the vegetarian items I had first. I found the eggplant pakora to be a very strong appetizer, with each bite size piece of eggplant battered, fried, and dusted in an addictive seasoning. I'd return just for this. The vada pao was less exciting, as I found the potato patty inside a hamburger bun to lack textural interest and flavor. I don't mind carbs on carbs, but the construction and flavor of this sandwich was so one note I barely cared to finish it, and I rarely leave food unfinished if I can. I tried a small bite of what most people visit for, the rowdy rooster sandwich at medium level of heat. I have a relatively high spice tolerance and this was just at the right level to be enjoyable for me, otherwise the spice would be too overpowering for me. I felt the same about the chili chicken, whose pieces were smothered in a spicy, slightly sweet sauce. The pieces were way too large, kind of like when you get buffalo cauliflower that comes in pieces so big you have to cut them to enjoy them. I would have preferred bite sized pieces, and a richer flavor profile. While there are a few other spots to get Indian fried chicken, the novelty of these dishes has me still recommending a visit to RR, if only to see what the infallible team at Unapologetic Foods has cooking up. read more

This place is delicious!! It's not your typical fried chicken sandwich place - it's better. It's got the perfect balance of heat with Indian flavors. I was warned about the spice levels here so I got a big rowdy with heat level 3 (out of 5) and I was sufficiently satisfied with the spiciness without being in pain (and I have a pretty good spice tolerance). Tried my friend's lil rowdy heat level 4 and at first it seemed less spicy than mine but it hit later. They can also handle spice pretty well and said that they would be in pain with a bigger sandwich. If you want to test the spice levels, you can always order a side of extra scallion yogurt or mint & cilantro sauce to balance it out. Warning! the food might be spicier than you think!! (NOTE: I have a really high spice tolerance compared to most Desi people and have no problem eating things with ghost pepper/signed waiver). I've been here twice and felt that the spice level wasn't consistent. Level 3 (Andhra/Rebel/Hot): I tried this the first time and thought it was the right amount of spice. My friends thought it was super spicy though. Level 4 (Kerala/Rouge/Extra hot): I got this the 2nd time around since I could handle more than level 3 and my family is originally from Kerala. HUGE mistake...I could only have one bite and eyes were watering. Let's not talk about how our stomachs felt after chugging water and ice cream. What happened here? Did they accidentally give us level 5?? There shouldn't be that big of a jump between level 3/4 and def didn't represent the spice level for kerala. If I can't eat it then I have a hard time believing someone else is. So...my suggestion is go with a level lower than you think you should. Maybe ask for chili on the side if you need to add more. There is a lot more breading than chicken -- was expecting a juicier piece. Also would be nice if there was more Raita. We also tried the potato pakora (just okay - would prefer masala fries?) Rowdy rooster is so good! Go through the menu and pick your choice - I went for a big rowdy sandwich, spice level rogue, and white meat. It was a delicious sandwich topped with onions and chutney and the bread was so soft, and the chicken was excellent. We also paired our meal with masala fries and mint chutney and I love the way they prepare their fries, almost like a potato pakora rather than your typical fry. Really good stuff! read more

Exactly what I wanted, when I wanted it. I was craving a fried chicken sandwich and the Indian style spices were a nice change of pace. The big rowdy sandwich with spice level 2 was the perfect heat level for me- had a medium kick but wasn't so spicy to overpower other flavors. The mango lassi to wash it down was fine, but I wished it had more mango flavor. The place only has a couple tables in it, so if you've got a large group I'd suggest carry out.
