I love unexpected experiences. I get to share two of them in this post, although the focus will ultimately be on Rouge River Brewing. On Instagram, there is a Markham-based business account called Patterson's Pizza. It specializes in Neapolitan-style pies using fermented sourdough. Each week, there is a pizza lottery where, if you are selected, you get to place an order for pizza and more. The demand is insanely popular to place an order for pizza. I have been trying for a while. Just before my trip to the Twin Cities, I gave it another try, not thinking that anything would happen. The person ahead of me who was selected couldn't make it. I felt like I had won the lottery because I was chosen! The funny thing is that this pizza order was my third this week. I had had Pizza Hut and PizzaForno earlier. Could I do it and not get sick of more pizza? Yes! I placed my order. The owner and pizza maker, Ian, was so nice. The pickup site is at Rouge River Brewing. I suspect that he also accesses the place's oven to make his creations. My pickup time was between 5 pm and 6:30 pm. I was so ready to pick up my food that day after work. I pass by Rouge River Brewing often. It's on Bullock Drive, smack in front of a three-way intersection with stop signs. When I don't feel like driving along highway 7 between Markham Road and the western point of CF Markville Shopping Centre, Bullock Drive is my route. Parking was atrocious. It was not only perfect weather for downing craft beer, but there were a bunch of dance moms with glammed-up girls and dudes looking at their souped-up cars with ridiculously huge spoilers in the lot. I found a parking spot in front of a business. It technically wasn't a parking spot. However, everyone else was parking in front of them, so I did the same. It required my dishing out my parallel parking skills, which have come in handy often these days. I walked over. I liked the patio area outside the brewery. I walked in and it felt cozy. There was lots of wood, from the kegs of beer, to the countertops and tables. At the bar area, I met Ian. He had my order ready. We chatted. Such a nice guy! I thanked him and wished him a great night. In front of me was a beer menu on the wall. Pizza and beer sounds good on an evening full of hockey games. My inner voice was nudging me to get some beer. It's Friday. You deserve beer. The nice woman at the bar helped me out. She asked if I liked IPAs. I do. She had me sample the Cookin' IPA. It was fantastic! My tastebuds woke up from the boredom of my driving over here drinking nothing. It was smooth and so good. It was different with a multitude of flavours thrown at me. I knew that I had to get a can. I then asked about the Groovy Fruit beer. It's essentially a rainbow sherbert sour in beer form. It's a sour with key lime, raspberry, and cara cara orange puree. I had to have it. I was so happy with my two cans of beer. I paid with a credit card. I added a tip. I tapped and was good. I thanked the woman for all her help. She was wonderful. I left with boxes of carbs and more carbs in a drinkable format. It helped that both cans were icy cold on a warm day. I would get both beers again. This brewery does a fine job crafting beer. The finish is lovely and there is so much flavour happening in each sip. I'm so proud that this place is in Markham. I wish that I had discovered it sooner, but better late than dead! I'm a fan. I'm definitely coming back for more beer. I hope to dine in and figure out what food they offer here. The vibe is casual. It looks like there's live music here, too. Perfect! (157)

Got invited to a Yelp Elite Beers & Badges night at this dog-friendly craft brewery. Been to many Markham Dog Alliance events there with my golden retriever dog in the past and always loved how welcoming & friendly the staff are and how cozy the atmosphere is for both humans and dogs. I tried their Pegasus (blonde ale) and Brazilian Lemonade (sour with lime and lactose) on tap and really enjoyed the taste of both. Will definitely be heading back for more. They host several events and theme nights at the brewery, but it's also a great place to drop in during the week to unwind. You can often find Patterson's Pizza (72 hour fermented sourdough pizza) there too, which is both delish and pairs perfectly with a cold beer. My dog gives it 4 paws out of 4 paws up.

Biked here to see what my home town (now a city) could brew up and it was exactly what I love, hoppy beer. The guys here were great. They told me about all their brews and answered all my questions while I had the chance to sample their weekly creations. I love where my city is going and this brewery will help us in a big way! Cheers.

I had been waiting and waiting and the wait is OVER! Finally Markham has a local craft brewery: Rouge River Brewing. For a newly opened brewery, I am just so impressed with their offerings: - Autumn Pale Ale (6.0% abv.) - Autumn IPA (6.8% abv.) - New Zealand Dry Hopped Sour (5.0% abv.) - Apricot Sour (5.0% abv.) - New Zealand Double IPA (9.6% abv.) - Just One More- IPA (7.2% abv.) *New Release* All available in 500 ml bottle to go. And the best of all, you will be welcome with open arms if you drop by for a Free sampling! Beer guys are just too cool! Winter Version will be ready soon... Now I have a local craft brewery!!

I read in an article somewhere* that the founder of Rouge River Brewing once worked at Mill St., got tired of making the same thing over and over, and so he took his experience and training back to his hometown to make the kind of brews he wants. And that's how a GTA suburb got its very own local craft beer factory. Absolutely great and needed for a city that could use a lot more culture than we usually give credit for. I mean, there are so many breweries in Toronto proper itself (how many are there just within a 2 mile radius of my own house??), I cannot keep tabs on them all! Meanwhile in a humble industrial plaza close to Markham Village and Markville mall, next to a tributary Creek that snakes into the actual Rouge not too far away, lies this upstart brewery that's making its own statements in the GTA's exploding beer scene. Quite the way for me to get here though, sigh. It does function as a neighbourhood pub. The place is bustling with what looked like neighbourhood locals, and there is a stage set up. Take-home bottle in the back fridges, and they do tasting flights yeah. I'd say it rivals Bellwoods in terms of youthful inventiveness and the rapid frequency of new products being circulated. You could barely keep up with news on their Instagram of new releases pumping out of this small shop. Yes they got some beers with punny names from the land of 90s rap (Forgot About Drei, Still Drei, Danksters Paradise, etc.--which prob says much about the brewmaster's influences), and a seasonal IPA for every one of the seasons. Their fruit sours are a standout however. Did Bellwoods ever think of using papaya? Cuz Rouge River did, and their Papaya Sour is an amazing tropical acid trip. I certainly like the variety and creativity of their products. See, the suburbs ain't so back, you just gotta put your back into it (put your ass into it)... Hiding in plain sight on an industrial road in Markham is this gem. Spacious with broad tables in front, a tasting bar midway, and the operations in back. Turn around and there's a stage for live music. Behind the bar is a turntable and a collection of vinyl. Along the wall are several spouts offering their latest pours below a large menu of beers. I tasted a flight of their autumn ale, their Belgian, and their fuller flavoured beer. The beers on offer were first rate. Flavourful and fresh and balanced with full palate presence. The owner's brother was offering his delicious chili in a well-baked milk bread bowl. They plan to have live jazz Fridays. This is what Markham needs.

I think I have always passed by but didn't realize there's a brewing company here. It is spacious and looks like a place where you can host a function here. Got a chance to try different kinds of beer. Among all of the variety, I love the citrus flavour and the coconut ipa more. Server is friendly and nice. It's a nice place to hangout.

This is a great find. I have a passion for beer and I very critical. If you love beer like I do you need to stop by. Tell them the guy from California sent you and enjoy. Every style they make is fantastic.

Good place, solid beer, Holy Trinity NE IPA is hoppy, juicy and tasty as hell. This microbrewery deserves some true respect.

Moved to Canada late Sep this year and settled down in Markham. Have been trying to find a good brewery near by. I'd say I'm pretty spoiled by craft beers in the US like Treehouse, Trillium, Otherhalf, Founders, etc so I actually have a high standard... I'm surprised to find this "first microbrewery in Markham" is actually ten mins drive from home, and I'm even more surprised to find that their beers are awesome!!! The hoppy, juicy and well balanced Holy Trinity really blew my mind. Never say never jack Daniel barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout tasted intense and full of layers. Good vibe, nice staffs. What can I ask for more? Oh right, there's open mic every Sunday. Cheers.

On Saturday, I drove over to Common Good Beer Company. Crosstown Craft Barbeque (CCB) was holding a popup event here. CCB had its first popup event at another beer place, but decided to try a different location. All meats were sold out by the time I got to the first event, so I needed another take. The popup started at 1 pm. I got here at 12:45 pm. Common Good is on the south side of Ellesmere, east of Warden Avenue. Although I was coming from the east, I recommend going eastbound on Ellesmere to turn right and get to this place safely. Common Good is in a small plaza. Eggsmart anchors this plaza. I had no problem finding a parking spot. I backed into an available one. I recommend backing into a spot because the distance between the two rows of parking is narrow. I like that Common Good has a lot of glass. I could see the lineup had already started. I waited in line. There was a bit of an issue with something, but it was fixed and customers were being served. Only two meats were sold out by the time I got to the front: - Turkey breast - Beef ribs Maybe it's me. I was surprised that the turkey went first. I would have thought that perhaps folks needed a break from turkey from Easter. Nope, it had sold out in a flash. Folks at CCB are nice. I ordered a bunch of goodies that didn't duplicate the sides that I had ordered two weeks ago: - Brisket - Spare ribs - Pork belly burnt ends - Cheddar jalapeno sausage - Mac and cheese - Coleslaw - Cornbread pudding I paid with a credit card. I tapped and tipped. All was great. I got a tray with my food. I got complimentary mustard and barbeque sauces. I also got pickled onions and pickles. Oh, and I needed a lid. On my way out, I saw a fridge full of craft beer and more. I had to check it out. I had a hard time figuring out if I wanted the Japanese rice beer or the dark lager. I went with the latter. I immediately saw field berry hard seltzer. I grabbed one. The woman at the counter was friendly and nice. She thanked me for supporting local. Common Good is all for supporting local businesses in Scarborough. I paid for my cans with a credit card. I tapped and all was good. This woman was so nice. She saw me with my tray and sides, and now cans of booze. She got me a paper bag with handles. I loaded my sides and cans into it. It helped a lot! I thanked her and left the store. Although I feel like I may have ordered way too much food from CCB, it was worth it. I have been eating a bunch of meals from it. The meats were half a pound each. They taste even better the longer they are left over. I can't pick a favourite protein. The brisket was so tender. The pork belly was on the fattier side, which gave you more flavour. The spareribs were so much better a day later. Meaty and yummy. The cheddar jalapeno sausage is my favourite sausage that I have had so far this year. It had the right combination of heat, meat, and cheese. I love sides. The mac and cheese had large shells, which made me happy. I liked the breadcrumbs on top. I love mac and cheese. I feel that there needed to be more sauce. Otherwise, it was solid tastewise. The coleslaw was excellent. It was garlicky, crunchy, creamy, vinegary, and delicious. Full marks! It also turned purple as time elapsed, which was cool. The cornbread pudding was also a pleasant surprise. It had chocolate mixed in with cornbread. It was dense and delightful to consume. I will be back for more field berry hard seltzer. It was excellent to down while watching game 7 between the Dallas Stars (more like the Rantanen show) and Colorado Avalanche. The berry flavour was perfect. It was cold and refreshing. It's the perfect lighter option as the weather gets warmer and nicer. I had the Japanese dark lager last night watching the Toronto Maple Leafs win their game against the Florida Panthers. The dark part had chocolate and caramel, which added so much flavour depth to the beer. The folks at CCB are so nice. They let me know that the next popup won't be here because the seating isn't as abundant as the other venue. It's true. However, the seating is more inviting here due to the number of plants soaking up all the sunshine that naturally beams in. I'm so glad that I dropped by Common Good. I'll be back for more beer and seltzer. I also want to get some empanadas from Juicy Empanada. This store also has a decent selection of pop (I saw Fanta in orange and pineapple) and snacks. I'd also like to play an arcade game. I didn't see Pac-Man, but I can do Millipede. (154)

There was a Crosstown Craft Barbeque (CCB) popup that I wanted to check out. I did grocery shopping to roast a turkey for Easter and more. This popup started at 1 pm. I got here at 2 pm. I parked on the street. All parking spots in front and on the side of the building were taken up. I walked in and noticed the long line for CCB. I lined up. It was risky coming so late. This place has something like twenty different varieties of beer on tap. I got to witness this awesomeness while I waited in line. The bar was busy, especially with the Canada-Finland women's hockey game on. This bar-eatery-brewery is spacious. There is a lot of seating to accommodate popup and regular customers. Sure enough, there were maybe five customers in front of me when we got word that all meats were sold out. I was oddly not as disappointed as I should have been. I knew that my late arrival would have consequences. There were sides available, which made me happy. The owners felt bad about running out of proteins, so anyone in line got free banana pudding. I got the following items: - Smokey beans - Potato casserole - Banana pudding I paid for the first two items with a credit card. I tapped and was good. I got my items in a plastic bag. I was happy and headed to my car with my goodies. For lunch, I ended up going to Wendy's to get some protein to compliment my sides. I just realized that I went crazy for beans, as I got chili from Wendy's. The smokey beans lived up to their name. They were smokey. I loved them. It had three types of beans, either pork belly or bacon, and the best smokey sauce. The flavour was perfect. The potato casserole was excellent. It had cubed potatoes in a creamy sauce with green onions. It was like a baked potato, but without bacon and in casserole form. So good! The banana pudding was yummy. It was naturally sweet from the ripe bananas in it. I liked the nutmeg in the pudding with bread pieces here and there. Having this dessert made me happy. It was great stopping to check out Brunswick Bierworks with the CCB popup. I hope to return and try the menu at Brunswick Bierworks and have a beer. (146)
