One of my favorite experiences when I went to Toronto back in 2019 was trying real Canadian whiskey and Canadian gin at a local distillery! They had a wonderful array of options, and I did the tasting flight back then that consisted of two whiskeys and two gin's. I don't remember most of the visit because the spirits were very strong, but I do remember the elderberry gym being fantastic! I remember sitting at the bar and being taken care of and the bartender, being very thorough and polite with explaining each spirit and what hors d'oeuvres it would pair well with. I love the old factory/warehouse vibe of the distillery. The building looked very old from the outside with a more modern interior. It was definitely a highlight of the trip and something I would highly recommend for any avid whiskey drinker. read more

The place is located across from the Roger's Centre in what used to be the train yard. It is clean but small- no it's bigger once they open the back room. We went for a drink and found that the service is the bartender, you order from him and pick up from him. We just ordered drinks and a pretzel- waiting for the World Series game. LOVED this spot the second we got there! We went before a Blue Jays game and it was the perfect spot. They were throwing a tailgate this specific day and had a grill outside with smash burgers and sides, vendors inside giving samples, and just an all around good atmosphere. After wandering around Toronto and seeing Steam Whistle signs all over the place, I knew I had to give them a try as the restored building was incredibly cool to see. The pros: the beer, the wait staff and the bacon sandwich were all great! The cons: it was incredibly hot inside during a mild day, the gravy for the fries tasted like nothing (especially compared to the gravy I had across town) and the prices were a little high, but nothing egregious. We found this place online while looking for somewhere to eat after visiting the nearby CN Tower. Hangry kids meant it had to be nearby and something that wouldn't take too long. The decor and atmosphere were great - our kids loved the train - but the service was pretty dreadful. They only had two waitresses for the entire area, and we were left hanging in the wind several times. We asked for food to come out as it was made - having hungry, grumpy kids that need their food makes that a priority. Instead, it all came out at once. And even then, they forgot one of the children's order and we had to remind them. The kid's mac and cheese was very bland - just your basic noodles with basic cheese sauce on it. The adult meals were good though. Then after our table was cleared, everyone but myself got up and they still did not bring a check for close to15 minutes, and we had to ask for it. Needed a separate bowl for my mussel shells- used the plate underneath the bowl which overflowed and dumped on the floor when the server cleared my plates. I wish they would do beer flights or smaller beers. While I enjoyed my beer, I did not have enough time to finish it. I also would have enjoyed trying more than one beer. Steam Whistle Brewing is made up of different sections: Tap Room, Kitchen (the restaurant), Tailgate (sports bar), and private party rooms. The location makes it ideal, as it's very close to all the major tourist hotspots (CN Tower, Ripley's Aquarium, Rogers Centre) and the financial district. They have a nice patio that's open in the summer, overlooking Roundhouse Park, Toronto Railyway Museum, and CN Tower. We dined at the restaurant and the menu is eclectic, drawing inspirations from different parts of the globe (offering items such as shakshouka, tabbouleh, and plant-based banh mi). Food is pretty good, with something for everyone. I had the Arctic Char with Tabbouleh, with a side of Seared Asparagus with Romesco Sauce. I liked how the asparagus was still somewhat crisp and not overcooked. Just don't expect the tabbouleh to be authentic like the one you'd get at Middle Eastern restaurants... they used couscous instead of bulgur, and no (or very little) parsley. It was still pretty good and healthy-tasting. Service is great - friendly, fast, and efficient. After meandering about Harbourfront Centre, my husband and I decided to pop on by Steam Whistle Brewing to grab a brew, some lunch, and check out the trains on display out front. SPACE: The brew house is located at the historic John Street Roundhouse which features a variety of rail cars on display. Inside the brewery, it feels very rustic chic. There's a large green shipping container that seems to house the kitchen. The back bar has large white subway tiles and iron shaded sconces. There's some happy little plants scattered throughout. I'm def loving the vibes! SIPS: This is probably the biggest reason I was disappointed in our visit. I am a brewery lover through and through. Especially if they have such a fun and unique concept. Steam Whistle Brewing's beer offerings left me wanting. Upon browsing the menu, my husband and I were disappointed to realize they only had two of their own beers to offer: a pilsner and an unfiltered pilsner. Oof. We each opted for pours of a couple guest brews. They do also feature a selection of canned cocktails and spirits as well. SUSTENANCE: I have to say the food is easily what saved the visit. After browsing the menu, I opted for the fish and chips, while my husband chose the roundhouse burger. The fish fillet was perfectly breaded, but not so much so that you couldn't taste the fish. My husband really enjoyed his burger. It was large, so make sure you come hungry. SERVICE: Our server was really friendly and helped us with questions we had about the menu. Upon placing our order, she even confirmed that those were her two favorite menu items. Love when we have good taste! With such a wide variety of breweries available to you in Toronto, Steam Whistle Brewing is best appreciated if you're an avid train-a-holic, craving a solid meal, or are just killing some time in the area - in my opinion. Because of the proximity to the CN Tower and Rogers Centre, this brewery makes for an ideal visit for tourists. Situated where the old railroads used to run through Toronto, this quirky brewery has pizzaz. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, good beer including their award winning Pilsner, and even a classy Char dish prepared! My only gripe with this place is they don't offer flights. Would have loved to have tried more beers. They were nice enough to let me sample, but it's not the same as a flight. Still a worthy choice and not to miss. read more

"Listen to that Duquesne whistle blowing Blowing like it's gonna sweep my world away" (Bob Dylan) In the vast open plaze that connects the CN Tower, the Rogers Centre, and the Aquarium, you will find this sweet Brewery and Biergarten. It's huge, it's gorgeous, the food and service were excellent, and of course, the beer were excellent as well. Their beers include just four ingredients (pure spring water, malted barley, hops and yeast), so you don't need a chemistry degree to understand what's in your glass. Their signature brew is Steam Whistle Pilsner, a super refreshing 5.0 ABV light beer. We both loved our pints ($8 each). They also have a pretty deep food menu with oodles of appetizers, salads, ribs, wings, sanwiches, fries and poutine. We shared an Original Pretzel ($10) with Mustard & Cheese Sauce and a Deli Board ($18) with sliced cured meat, cheese, crostini, gherkins, and a zippy grainy Pilsner mustard. Yesterday I attended the Brewery's annual outdoor Roundhouse Winter Craft Beer Fest. and I had what turned out to be an awesome time. There was a somewhat lengthy lineup to get in but I got in around 12 noon when the Fest. started, then walked around checking what Breweries and beers were there - I counted 44 Breweries that had been advertised as participating - and looking for any familiar faces. Awhile after I started sampling I gradually met several other people I knew. I sampled 10 beers, all of which I enjoyed and at least a few I found outstanding; I've posted a few of the photos I took below. The weather was amazing for the 1st several hours of the Fest., then clouds gradually became more plentiful until it was completely overcast later in the afternoon. Attendees had the option of taking their beverages inside the Brewery, where food was available for purchase. Outside there were food trucks and tents with food you could buy scattered around the Fest. This was the 1st time I've attended their Winter Fest.; I've attended their Summer Fest. a couple of times, in 2013 and 2017. It appeared to be quite well organized overall, however, I took a star off my rating due to the admission price for the Fest. which although you get a nice large glass sampling mug, doesn't even include at least a few sampling tokens. You need to buy them separately at the Fest. (@$2.50/token, sold in packages of 10; 1 token = 5 ounces/half full, 2 tokens = 10 ounces/full), but they did have a cashless (card only) setup in order to expedite the process, which was good. There was music playing during the Fest. which at times I found overly loud for my liking, and they had interactive winter-themed activities as well. read more

I'm a big fan of pilsners and trying to put my input down as to what I thought about Steam Whistle's pilsner kind of put me at the juncture of being right on the line between three stars and four stars. Since I am kind of a snob with this I had to make a decision and stick with it. I certainly had pilsners I liked more but this one isn't bad either. I certainly have had worse. Specifically the beer was called the Steam Whistle Pilsner. Flavor highlights to find with this beer is hoppy and sweet with a clean finish. The beer is light bodied and smooth. It has a lot of characteristics that a lot of pilsners have, just not quite as memorable as some the counterparts though. This brewery is a part of my "lost" series of breweries and beer experiences. They were once deemed lost due to a destroyed phone and turning up the physical notes of the beer experience gave me the clarity and details I needed with the beer experience to get a review posted. Because when you try out as many breweries as I do they sometimes tend to blend together. read more

I loved the pretzel and would definitely get that again. The charcuterie was also good but I would probably skip next time for something different. I visited Steam Whistle Brewing for a tour with my friends about 9 years ago! I remember really enjoying the tour and the beer so when hubby and I visited Toronto for the weekend, I decided to bring him here. We were able to book a last minute tour for the next day, which was a Friday at 4 pm. On the day of, we were in the area a lot earlier. The booking email confirmation said we could email if we need to cancel or change our reservation. Maybe they were busy the day of but we didn't get an email response and nobody picked up the phone either. Luckily, we were able to change our time without issue because we decided to just stop in early, so we ended up doing the 1 pm instead. Tours last 30 minutes and tickets cost about $15 CAD and include a beer during the tour. Our tour guide, Kenny was awesome. He made the tour interesting and fun, and you could tell he really loves his job. We found at that tours had just recently started up again since before Covid (May 2023). We decided to add a 6 pack to our ticket and we are so glad we did because it also came with a limited edition bottle opener. Another pro is that it's conveniently located Downtown, next to the CN Tower. It's also located in an old train yard, so there are plenty of photo ops around. The brewery also has a restaurant, which I don't believe was there last time. The food smelled great but we had just eaten lunch. If I ever find myself back in Toronto, I wouldn't mind checking that out. read more

Excellent service and a delicious Pilsner! It's kind of neat that this brewery just does their Pilsner. Why do more when you've got something great going for you? While they have a restaurant with food and other drinks, they also have a tap room that just serves the pilsners as well as some panini sandwiches.
