There's a welcoming environment in the shop; they're encouraging towards everyone; experienced (certified) trainers to help you get out there and have fun....which is the primary reason to cross country ski. Most everyone who skis the Traverse City area Vasa (in Acme), know Forbush is worth the drive when TC conditions have deteriorated.

Impressively roller-coaster trails for a very un-Michigan hill experience, and a hilariously funky…read morelodge that used to be a house. There are flat trails, and open trails, but the really unique aspect of Forbush Corner is the wealth of twisty, repeatedly-up-and-down trails like Rollercoaster, Badlands, and Li'l Coaster. Grooming is good for classic, and reasonable for skate --- the day I visited, half the system had been freshly groomed (though less solid than some places do skate), and there was 1.5" of fluff on the other half. Skating the fluff worked fine, but might not be for everyone. The western trails get fairly close to I-75, but there was very little road noise the day I visited. The lodge is an old house, with a wood stove in the living room, a variety of tiny extra bathrooms scattered around, and a row of tractor-seat bar stools in the kitchen. There's a tureen of soup ("Soup not prepared in a commercial kitchen") and an honor-system money jar for Gatorade, hot chocolate, and granola bars. There's a reasonable stock of Madshus skis and boots, but the current staff isn't as familiar with the details as Dave Forbush himself was reputed to be. Remember to sign out at the end of your day, so they know you made it back safely!

At first, I thought this was a marketing gimmick; why wouldn't the skate manufacturers just make a…read morestronger boot to prevent those powerful pucks? Alas, it's all about the weight, and this quite light yet very strong, and easy to put on and off. More for defencemen to block shots. It fits on any skate and size, pretty much. Still would've preferred a clip on strap. As a goalie, I know how hard those pucks hurt, so the few times that I do play forward, even then, I don't take chances lol, there's lots of hackers out there, especially taking one shot or slash across the laces where it's just leather cushioning for padding. Also helps mentally too that you can go all out, though not sure if that's a good thing.
