This is one of those used bookstores that has a preternatural silence about it. If you visit used bookstores, you know what I mean. It's just ... quiet. You can do some thinking in this bookstore. In other words: It's a good used bookstore! Book Nook is one of the older bookstores in Cadillac. They have lots of books, including rare and out-of-print titles. It's not fancy in the least bit, and in fact it's a little overwhelming to visit because there's just so much everywhere all at once. But if you're into organized chaos, you will have fun exploring Book Nook because there is something to see all around the store. My children headed straight for the kids' section. There were lots of books here that sent me straight to the late 1980s and early 1990s when I was a young reader, like the McGurk detective series and Lois Lowry joints. My kids each found a book to take home for pocket change. That's the great thing about used book stores: You can walk away with a treasure for a couple of bucks. Book Nook also has lots of old magazines, those trash paperback romance novels you read on vacation, albums and vinyl records, 25-cent gum-ball machines and more. The store was not the most organized, too many old or books in poor condition. The prices were ridiculous. Way overcharging for used books. Most used book stores I have been to are priced around $3-4 each. I paid almost $10 for one book. Would give this store a higher rating if the prices were more fair. read more

Upon arriving in the store, I was not greeted ! I think there was only one staff member working. It's full of many used books, mostly older. From my time spent it's mostly second or third hand books. They have a great selection on used books. The problem we ran into was if the book is not labeled as a certain used price, they would charge as if it was a new book. We were paying full price for a used book when we could just go to Barnes and Noble and get it new for the same price.This also includes damages books. My wife and I left like we were being scammed. What an adorable used book shop! I stopped in when I came up to visit and I found it to be a charming little shop, housing lots of used books, including some rare and hard to find books and out of print titles. These are the kind of places that I love finding while on vacation. The people who work there seem pretty nice and really know their inventory, which is difficult in the book business, particularly the used book biz. They seemed on their game. I don't know what their trade in rate is, but overall, I liked the store. Inexpensive prices for gently used books. I bought two titles and left a happy customer. read more

I always make a point to stop by the book nook when visiting Cadillac, even though I have a Kindle. They have every used book imaginable in addition to magazines. They take in your old books for credit and the prices are reasonable. There are not too many used book stores in my neighborhood and places like this are disappearing, so we need to enjoy them while we can! read more

So, I had a bad experience when I went this summer, owner was very rude, place smelled disgusting, prices were not the greatest. 1/2 off sticker price. But I decided to give it another try, maybe he was just having a bad day. Took a lot of books in to exchange, was given 1/4 of sticker price, refused any hard cover books even though they were in pristine condition and of popular titles. When he rang me up he charged me an additional percentage. so my 1/4 sticker price went down to about 1/8 sticker price on my books I brought in. For my $89.00 credit on brand new, excellent condition, popular books, in exchange for some outdated children's books and a few other newish books and some well used books. I had to pay $32.00!!! WHAT? and I did not go over my $89 credit! so I was really confused, but just wanted to be done with it! He needs to have a massive clearance sale, the store is grossly over crowded, and he needs to change his exchange policy. He might actually get more than the rough necks off the street shopping there! read more

On my way home from the fish farms I stopped in Cadillac for a sandwich. When I eat out alone I like to read but I didn't have anything on me. So I drove across town to the Book Nook. Walking in the door, I immediately felt at home. The smell of old paperbacks makes me feel nostalgic for those long summer days when you could spend hours reading in the warm quiet shade of the living room. But soon that feeling fell away as I browsed the bookshelves, all of them painted canary yellow and bowing under the weight of so many books. Panels of fluorescent lights in the drop ceiling brought out the colors of the garish spines and the books' covers with their thickly embossed gold or silver letters spelling out the titles and the authors' names. I couldn't find a place to rest my eyes anywhere, it was like being in a fauvist painting without a focal point. I retreated to the back and grabbed a biography of Orel Hershiser, a former pitcher for the LA Dodgers. He played with Fernando Venezuela, who I admired a great deal, so I thumbed through Hershiser's biography for any mention of Fernando but I couldn't find any. After that I came across a science-fiction novel by Stanislaw Lem, called "Return from the Stars," a story about a man who came back to Earth after a long voyage in space. I read the first ten pages or so, which described the man trying to find his way out of a train station and failing. There were no other customers in the Book Nook and I could hear the faint hum of the lights above me. I wondered what it was like in there at night. read more
