Skis, boards, swag, birks..you name it. On top of the array of various accoutrement, the owners Michelle and Casey were so warm, helpful and knowledgeable. Michelle consulted with me about some Birkenstocks. Casey gave me a fitting and Michelle scoured the stock room and then gave me her card and was super casual and conversational throughout. After a day of skiing, we stopped by Boyne Country Sports. Hubby picked out a nice, new pair of modern-technology goggles, then reminded me that my own decade-old goggles are too big to fit on my face under my ski helmet. They were always pressing on my sinuses the wrong way. OK, I'll try on some, too. The next morning, hubby noticed that my brand new, never worn ski goggles had vertical scratches in the centers of the lenses. Darn. He said we ought to exchange them. Back at Boyne Country Sports, he showed the scratches to Mike, the man who had sold us the goggles. Then they called in Steve, who seems to be the manager. Hubby showed Steve the goggles, and at first he said, "Oh that's just moisture." But when Steve looked at a second, then a third pair that had scratches already on them, he had to conclude that they were arriving at the store that way. He was going to have to speak to the Scott distributor. And then he did something amazing. He helped me pick out another pair that fit my head/helmet combination, and then he gave them to me for no additional charge, even though they were more expensive. I certainly didn't expect him to do THAT. Thanks, guys! Above and beyond the call of duty. :-)

Ahhh...how easily the most simple plans go awry. In this case, I couldn't tear myself away from off-season Glen Lake and then got trapped here by the weather - it's December and I'm still here, sans appropriate outdoor gear. I did not pack for winter - I packed for fall and now I'm paying for it. We're talking plastic bags over my sneakers just to go outside due to the snow and the pipes freezing in the washing machine after I'd loaded 75% of our clothes in with soap. I'll go ahead and answer that question that is running through your mind even as I type; yes, I AM a complete idiot. What to do? Head into the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor. Although quite small, they have a great selection of high quality mens and womens coats, sweaters, shirts, long underwear, socks, foot gear, etc. at very reasonable prices. I've purchased a lovely, well made and much needed pair of boots for myself, some jammies & pants for the fella and we're set to go until the roads are safe to head back to Chicago. Good variety of Woolrich, Columbia, etc. in clothing and sporting gear for fishing and hunting and they even offer chartered fishing trips. Look for significant discounts after Thanksgiving - there are bargains to be had. Very friendly and helpful staff (I went in not knowing the fellas pants size and the incredibly nice saleslady helped me find a pair that fit him perfectly) and open year round to save dumb asses like myself from their ill conceived follies - I highly recommend this incredibly useful store.

Exceptionally well-groomed trails and a lot of trails. When conditions are a touch over freezing in…read morethe TC area (not optimal), conditions are a touch below freezing at Forbush and conditions are exceptional. There's a welcoming environment in the shop; they're encouraging towards everyone; experienced (certified) trainers to help you get out there and have fun....which is the primary reason to cross country ski. Most everyone who skis the Traverse City area Vasa (in Acme), know Forbush is worth the drive when TC conditions have deteriorated.

Impressively roller-coaster trails for a very un-Michigan hill experience, and a hilariously funky…read morelodge that used to be a house. There are flat trails, and open trails, but the really unique aspect of Forbush Corner is the wealth of twisty, repeatedly-up-and-down trails like Rollercoaster, Badlands, and Li'l Coaster. Grooming is good for classic, and reasonable for skate --- the day I visited, half the system had been freshly groomed (though less solid than some places do skate), and there was 1.5" of fluff on the other half. Skating the fluff worked fine, but might not be for everyone. The western trails get fairly close to I-75, but there was very little road noise the day I visited. The lodge is an old house, with a wood stove in the living room, a variety of tiny extra bathrooms scattered around, and a row of tractor-seat bar stools in the kitchen. There's a tureen of soup ("Soup not prepared in a commercial kitchen") and an honor-system money jar for Gatorade, hot chocolate, and granola bars. There's a reasonable stock of Madshus skis and boots, but the current staff isn't as familiar with the details as Dave Forbush himself was reputed to be. Remember to sign out at the end of your day, so they know you made it back safely!
