We picked up some cross-country skis for the whole family to rent for a week from Brick Wheels and they were great -- efficient, helpful, and friendly in getting us all sized up and kitted out; good advice about where to try to find some decent skiing given the weather; and (in so far as I can judge) the skis all seem to be good quality too. As I planned to visit TC, I knew I would rent a bike for a day, but from where? I flew United Airlines, and on the cover of their Hemisphere magazine was Three Days in Traverse City. The Hemisphere article mentioned Brick Wheels. I made an online reservation the night before my rental. When I arrived at 10 am, the bikes were ready to ride. They close at 6 pm, and I wasn't sure how long I'd be out, so they gave me a combination lock to lock the bikes up in front of the shop if I returned after 6. My friends and I were visiting Traverse City with our dogs and rented hybrid bikes and a dog trailer from Brick Wheels. Joe was super helpful making sure that the dog trailer reservation went through (they only have one to rent) and we had a great time on our ride. Be careful when ordering a bike from this place. Test rode two models to see what the right fit was for me. After an employee searched inventory they determined they didn't have one in stock, so I ordered on. I was shown a certain model with color scheme and approved to purchase. One week later after contacting Brick Wheels, they said they couldn't find my bike and would call me back. A couple days later, they finally found it, I traveled down to pickup and was presented with a different bike than what I ordered. Going on a week now trying to get someone from the store to return my phone calls and emails and they won't call back to address the situation. Go elsewhere, save yourself the headache. read more

I was under the impression that Brick Wheels was going to be another friendly face on my cross-country bicycle tour. I lost a part to my frame pump and had asked them to get the part (I was very specific which one) and gave them my phone number in case there was a problem. Even though it was a Sunday they said no problem. I called the day I was going to roll through Traverse City(3 days later) and talked to several employees before learning that they "couldn't order it". At which point they offered me a new pump. this is clearly just another case of upselling or maybe just laziness because I then called Topeak and they said that they could send me the part I needed, for free. Chris did an awesome job helping us out. He put a rear rack on the Canondale Mtn e- bike with a nice fork suspension. Gave us a charger too for charging up the Bosch engine while we took it out for a week. I almost never had to take it out of the lowest setting Eco mode. The bike rode really great on the rail trails and all over Mackinac Island including the horse trails/gravel mud trails. One suggestion please, make sure you get detailed instructions on how to change the rear tire if you get a flat including making sure you can loosen the bolt with your crank tool. From a touring perspective, these guys are solid. They had a lot of things a bagger might need including patch kits, racks, panniers, pumps and more. Shop employee Dave and I struck up a conversation about touring, my bike and his dream bike. The other staff were both friendly and helpful. The shop caters to many crowds, including racers, commuters, mountain bikers, cruisers and baggers. Prices are reasonable and won't break the bank. I even saw some long boards and stand up paddle boards which always make a wistful windsurfer happy. I will say that I didn't use the shop services, so I can't speak for the shop or rentals at all. While on vacation with family, we set out to rent bikes to ride the TART trail in Traverse. Brick was great! They are knowledgeable, friendly, and very reasonably priced. They provided us with properly fitted helmets, locks and flat pack, for my road bike renters. I recommend that if you are just a casual rider, rent the cruiser. It was comfortable (big cushy seat), rode well, and only $20 for half a day! As for the road bikes, they have a pretty upscale selection. My brother-in-law's rental, was a $2400 cycle! That is some rental! And as for location, it is right at the trail. Maps are available, along with local advice on what to do and where to go. read more

When visiting a new town, the first thing I try to do is expierence it through the eyes of a local commuter and there's no better way than to rent a bike and cruise around town. I had a couple of options to choose from when picking a bike rental shop and honestly the thing that made it a no brainer for me in choosing Brick Wheels was how nice the people on the phone were to me. I had called a couple of other places in town and after being placed on hold too long I was relieved to finally have someone be so nice and courteous to me. I think the associate was either Betsy or Betty so forgive the memory lapse. I was able to walk from my hotel to the establishment and I gotta say that walk was great! Like walking through a modern day Pleasant Town! When I got to the store I was impressed at how fancy it was. All of their equipment is well taken care of and they have sweet bikes to choose from! I had forgotten my water bottle at the hotel and the owner gave me a free one. It's the little things that make a difference and I was really happy that they cared about the little things just as much as I did. Highly recommend this place as your one stop shop. I've been coming to Traverse City for a very long time and though I'm cemented to my local bike shop Great Lakes Cycling in hometown Ann Arbor, Brick Wheels has been my go-to bike shop for emergency service when we need help while in Traverse City. Service department has been stellar, responsive and reasonable. Someone fell on my wife's bike yesterday, trashing the rear wheel - I got a thoughtful pros-and-cons from the service department on truing the wheel vs a new one, not up-sold at all and very customer-centric with good advice and solid answers to my questions. Repair was done within a couple of hours despite the fact that they were busy. Friendly, well-informed and they did what they said they would do in half the time. That has characterized my experience with this shop over many years. I'm surprised by one reviewer's negative experience - I have to believe that was just an aberration, because the culture of this shop for more than a decade since I've been visiting has been friendly, customer-oriented, expert and attentive without being obnoxious and always high level of service. I've only used their service and bought accessories, though last year as I was considering a new Cannondale, they urged me to ride one of theirs even after I told them upfront that because I valued my local bike shop relationship, I was not going to buy a bike from Brick - they still spent the time and let me take one of theirs for a ride knowing I was not going to buy that day.
