I've used roto rooter several times in the past couple years. As a property manager having good contacts that you can rely on when it's beyond my scope of expertise is very important. The roto rooter team has always been very responsive and easy to work with. They show up when they say they will and even alert you when they're on their way to you. They make it easy working with my tenants and billing me after as well. I had a persistent leak at my house that I tried fixing three times and finally called them out. Alexandra and her coworker (I'm so bad with names) were great. Super friendly and professional. They found and addressed the problem fast. They had the new garbage disposal I needed on their truck and got it installed in no time. So nice to not have to worry about the phantom leak lol! Thanks again guys! I've been using Roto Rooter for 20 years and it's always been reasonably priced. Not any more! Just cost me $99 to teach me to read the yelp reviews first even when it's a business you know and trust. Had them give me an estimate to install a Leaksmart Valve leak detector that I am providing. Their price to install my valve is the same price that I can get the top of the line Moen full system installed through Farmer's Insurance. Location is outside next to my porch so no access issues. I wanted an estimate for my lateral sewer replacement which I already knew would cost thousands of dollars. They came out, charged me $99 for the service call, and said I would get the estimate in few days. When they didn't call, I called to be told they couldn't do an estimate unless they came back to run their camera down the line which had already been done by another company. The line needed to be replaced which had already been determined by the first company with the city inspector on-site. DO NOT HIRE ROTO ROOTER FOR PLUMBING in Humboldt County. I contacted Roto Rooter when the plumbing to my old claw foot tub failed. They managed to turn a simple fix into a major hack job. Worse, when they left I had three leaks in two water lines. The person they sent to fix that problem said he couldn't fix it because he didn't have the proper tools for the confined space, and came up with a really bad suggestion that even I knew would create additional problems. I finally told them not to come back at all and I have hired a REAL plumber to fix and re-plumb this area. Roto Rooter is sending out people who are not trained, do not have the proper equipment, and lack the experience of a "real" plumber, so any advice they give you is pretty much crap. read more

I needed my septic system pumped and a replacement pump installed. It would have been an important thing to know they are unable to pump a septic system to replace a pump before coming out and charging $99 to tell me this. The tech's are great but the person answering the phone may need to watch some Bob the Builder episodes about plumbing and septic systems. read more

I called to have valves replaced in shower. In the past I had good experience with a mainline issue. I was unaware of change in ownership since then. I was charged $800 to replace valves for hot and cold water. 2 weeks prior I had the same job done at my residence in Ventura, Ca, and was charged $350. Because my tenants had a high water bill I agreed to the service and paid the bill. Today I called to inquire about the unexpected high cost. Zach called me backbut I did not get to phone in time. I returned call and left a message with the nature of my inquiry and invitation to respond via phone call, voice mail, or text. I am waiting to hear why his prices are so high. read more

Had a mainline break. I called another company first and got stood up. In a panick with the yard flooding and racing the rain we called rotor rooter. Dan white showed up and worked until late at night to run a new main line. I was allot of muddy work. He worked hard and the dispatcher was on point and had called us before his arrival. Quick response, $99 upfront for diagnosis, which I had already figured out. I had removed and cleaned the drain parts and determined the line from the wall to the bigger pipe (4-6 ft. below) was clogged. Nice tech confirmed the problem and spent at least 10 minutes on his handheld device to quote me nearly $800 to unclog the short pipe. I gave him the $100 and said, "No thanks, that is ridiculous.". More time on his device and a call to headquarters and the 'drop dead' price came back to $650. He never had to remove a pipe or get on his knees. In the time he spent on his device he could have walked to his truck, gotten a baby snake and cleared the line. I expected to pay $200-300, not $600-800. Bought a snake for $25 and fixed the problem myself. I would never call them again. read more

I guess I should've read more of the reviews. I will start by saying the technician, Mike, was great. I am getting a cleanout installed in a couple weeks for a drain that backs up about twice a year. I needed someone to come out and snake the drain so we could comfortably live for the next week or two. I've had it done before for around $150 but Roto-Rooter said they could be out the next day. The person on the phone quoted me around 150 to 200 to snake. Once the technician got there, he told me because it's a "secondary drain "it would be upwards of $700-800. I've had this done two times since we've purchased the house and the entire job takes about 20 minutes. what a joke. I'm assuming they just send out technicians and then over price knowing that they will get the hundred dollars for the visit. Crappy business model, but it must be effective. They clearly don't particularly want to do work. On top of the ridiculous price to snake the drain, I was quoted a price to install the clean out for roughly 7 times what I'm paying in the coming week. I would get three or four separate quotes before I ever use this company. read more

I was very excited to hear that this company had new owners as I had bad experiences in the past. I had 4 very pleasant interactions with them. Just this week, I have been very disappointed. I had them come snake a drain a month or so ago and they charged $199.00 which seemed very fair. I called them this week for a clogged drain, similar situation and they charged me $99.00 to come out then quoted over $1200.00 to snake the drain. I also had them come look at a leaky faucet. I have use this company for 10 years and have always had great experience. Recently I had a clogged drain. I called them to get an appointment and was told it would be $99 for an estimate. I have always gladly paid the estimate fee as it came off the price of the service and have used this company multiple times anytime I had a problem. What they failed to tell me was that the company had been sold and they raise their prices 368%. What used to cost $199 now cost $729. I feel if it had been like a 10% raise in prices or something reasonable I could have understood but not disclosing such a huge jump was unprofessional. This information was extremely alarming. I denied getting it done due to the humongous raise in price but was stuck with a $99 estimate fee. Luckily I was able to find another local company, who did an excellent job and were courteous, prompt and reasonably priced. Do not go with this company!! I will never, ever use this company again, which is a shame because I have a rental and I used to use them often. I gave them an opportunity to make it right but they didn't feel a 368% raise in price needed disclosing. I am in the process of disputing this charge with my credit card company. read more

I just paid $99 for an "evaluation" to tell me I would be charged $790 to snake a drain in my home. That is absolutely ludicrous. I have used Roto-Rooter in the past for this same service (same drain even) and it was less than $300--and that only cost that much because it was an emergency weekend call. The service guys said the prices went up in the last few days. That it would have been less than $300 just 4 days ago. The woman who scheduled me over the phone yesterday was not honest about the massive increase in what they are charging for basic plumbing services. They did make sure to say that I would be charged the $99 for evaluating. So they know what they are doing. You either pay the $100 and keep your clogged drain, or spend the $790. I am not one to go out of my way to lambast a business but I told the service guys to open their own business and charge reasonable prices because Roto-Rooter is only going to be getting their $99 bamboozling fee from most people. The owner should be ashamed at using an established brand as a trick to overcharge people for basic services. LAME. BTW it is easy to search for and find out who the owner is. Maybe steer clear of their other business ventures as well, unless you want to get fleeced. read more

I called in a panic. Our water heater had half an inch of standing water under it. The tech came out and shut off my water heater and assessed the situation. We ordered a new one. The next day Antone came out and installed it with a pan underneath. He used the restroom as the new tank was filing and could hear an issue with the water backtracking at my shower. I asked if he had the part and could he fix it too?? He also repaired the shower, no extra charge. Great company, great tech!! read more

Had to replace a 20 year old toilet, called Mad River Plumbing, they had a plumber here the next day. Abraham was here at the appointed time, brought a new toilet, replaced it, the water shut off valve, checked for leaks, made sure it flushed & removed the old toilet. The whole job was done in less then 3 hours. Abraham was clean, professional, friendly and left the bathroom in perfect condition, before he left he made sure to tell us if there were any issues going forward just give him a call. We have read some negative reviews about Mad River Plumbing, we did not experience anything negative, just the opposite. We will use Mad River Plumbing again for any plumbing issues. We initially called Roto-rooter because all of our drains were backing up into the house, and as you can imagine, it was pretty gross. They came out, snaked from the outside drain and told us we needed our septic tanked pumped. He charged us $298 and gave a 90 day warranty. He looked me right in the eye and said "If you still have an issue after your tank is pumped, let us know. It's warrantied." It took some time for someone to come pump our tank as there are only 3 pump trucks in Humboldt County. And at the time, Roto-rooter didn't have a truck. So that leaves two operational trucks. Eventually, Steve's Septic (*****) came out and pumped the tank. Fabulous. The toilets flushed, the drains cleared and we thought we were back in business. Two weeks went by and the drains were backing up again. We called Roto-rooter, because, ya know, warranty... they came back out, snaked some more and it worked. The drains cleared and once again we thought everything was fine. Two more weeks go by and once again I feel like I'm living in Shit City. We call Roto-rooter, again because it's warrantied. They send a third guy out who immediately tells me "this isn't on the warranty." I pass that information along to my landlord. The plumber and I decide to let the Roto-rooter office and my landlord work that out and again, he snakes the outside drain, it clears. We think this time we must have got it! Then last week it started again. Drains gurgling and backing up. The landlord tells me to call Roto-rooter, which I did. I spoke with a woman named Cheryl who informs me that this trip will not be covered under warranty because "we've already been out there twice on that warranty." I responded "but it's still not fixed." She informs me that she'll do some research and let my landlord know. She was incredible rude and made it seem as if my plumbing issues were a big inconvenience to her. After arguing with Roto-rooter on the phone my landlord gave up and called Wycoff's. They sent a plumber out who found the problem and had it fixed in about an hour. He never even got a snake out. There was a broken pipe between the house and the septic tank and dirt and rocks were clogging it up. In summary: Roto-rooter sucks and does not stand by their "work" if you can even call it that. I left a comment on the website and was called the next morning by a local representative who went out of her way to correct the problem to 100% satisfaction. The customer service here is awesome, and as for the services, it seemed to be that specific tech and not the whole organization, so definitely consider for your next plumbing need. read more

This review is in two parts: the excellent service I received from the actual workers who came to our home: and the snotty woman in their office who answers my phone calls. We had a backed up septic drain to our tenants home and I called them, the woman on the phone was abrupt and treated me like I was an idiot as I did not know exactly what was wrong with our line- isn't that why you call these guys? Jeez. Anyway the worker dude came out was super nice and quickly ascertained that our septic tank was full and backed up- and quickly got the pumper truck out to pump our tank and he did not charge us for his visit! So he calls the woman to arrange the pumping and I could hear her yelling at him about " why didn't he check that out first?" The worker apologized profusely for her attitude. Then the boss comes out and pumps our tank - this is within an hour of finding out the tank was full- which I found was amazing.!they were great! So five stars for the pumpers and the boss but no stars for the snotty woman in the office who tries to make people feel like idiots. I asked the worker dude "why do you even have her?". He of course couldn't answer that one. Just beware of her. The workers and the service were above and beyond. Great and competitive price for pumping the tank also- I did call Steve's real quick and their price was the same but they couldn't come out right away. read more

Avoid this company. I had a guy come over to fix a leak, he told me it was a big job and charged 300. I needed it fixed bad so I payed. It took him 20 minutes to fix it with a 4 inch piece of copper pipe. My contractor friend told me I had just been ripped off. I called rotorooter and asked for some money back. The service guy came back to my house yelled at me and tried to physically intimidate me. I thought I was going to get my butt kicked by this huge guy. He ended up giving me 90 back on the fix. Stay away from this company. Find a good local person to help you instead. read more
