Ordered the following: Pad Thai- it did not taste authentic; needed more tamarind, color was dark not reddish. Penang curry-my husband/son said that it was good; moist chicken. But, it was mediocre for me. Platter for £12 was not worth it: the spring rolls were not Thai but just regular egg roll found in Chinese food. The skewers were ok but looked prepared well- ahead, not freshly grilled. The other noodle dish had a good amount of beef and my other son liked it. As for the service, it was not busy, and fortunately, it was attentive. Ambiance looked awfully less than casual. Tip: the Pad Thai at Waitrose for £4 tasted more authentic than the one served here. Really surprised with some of these lukewarm reviews because as an avid Thai fan, I LOVE this place!! Ok, maybe I just really really like corn and their corn fritters are to die for. They're sweet, crunch, and pair well with a spicy/salty sauce (not the one they provide). All the other curries and noodles are more standard Thai, but nonetheless really flavorful, spicy, and good. Tried this place on a Thursday evening with a few colleagues. We visited this place at 6:25 pm and were seated immediately. There was no wait, although the place was busy. We ordered their only beer on menu, Chang? First time for me with that beer and it was quite horrible! Did not enjoy it at all. For my main course, I got their grilled sea bass.. Everything about that dish is perfect, except the big, un-chewable pieces of lemon grass. The taste of lemon grass overpowers the fish taste and spoils the dish completely! It also comes with vegetables.. 2 pieces of Cauliflower, 2 pieces of cucumber and something else.. It's disappointing that they serve these vegetables raw! My first visit to Rosa's was a very nice dinner. Roses is a very small restaurant, with seating for about 25 in the Spitalfields area. Service is done as a team, so seating, ordering, serving and clearing done by the full staff. We had two starters of Thai calamari and Summer rolls, which both were considerably small to share for two people. The calamari were large pieces lightly fried, while the Summer rolls were 4 small rolls which were a bit dry and felt pre-made and stored in a refrigerator until served. Main entrees were prepared very well, with two dishes on Chicken Pad Thai and Green Curry Beef. Although both dishes were shown as spicy, neither had any spice level to them (even for a novice like me). Withstanding the spiciness which I expected, both dishes were hot and flavorable. Serving portions were reasonable, but for hungry folks order an additional plate. After my first experience, I would know better what to order, and is definitely worth trying again. read more

Oh Rosa, you should know. Any good Pad Thai should not be served with lemon, but lime. You should also know that even though your food is damn tasty, being rude to your customers is not okay. I have been wanting to go to Rosa's for the past 3 years and have never had the opportunity. Also, I have a few Thai spots not that far from me that are pretty awesome so I never see the point in travelling. I'm not saying that this place isn't good, it's just not what everyone seems to be raving about. For a start they had those awful black square plates that were all the rage in the nineties. They you get the nonchalant service piled on top of that and the mid range price tag and I'm thinking I should have saved some cash and just gone for a curry down Brick Lane. The reasons that I have given Rosa's four stars are four fold. 1. Speed - The food once ordered was prepared quickly and serviced piping hot. With no compromise on flavour or presentation. FACT 2. Flavour - Thai food is one of my favorites so I eat a lot of noodles, rice and curry. Having eating so much I know bad and I know good and this was, off the beaten track, night market, pull a shrimp out the sea kinda good. FACT 3. Staff - Our waitresses were delightful and a joy to be in there company. We ordered two Lemongrass which didn't go down well, noticing my screwed up face she politely took them away and deducted them from the final bill, no questions asked. FACT 4. Setting - Making no apologies for it's cafe style seating the open doors and large window present the illusion of an area much larger than it's square footage and give diners an airy feel. Music spilt in from the neighboring band making the moat perfect accompaniment to the meal. FACT 5. Drinks - Not the best and the reason for four and not five stars. Finally got a chance to try Rosa's yesterday since I was in the neighborhood. I'm now on a mission to find the best Thai in London since I miss food from my homeland oh so much. Rosa's is a casual eatery and the three of us got seated right away. I opted for Pad Thai Chicken, because let's be honest, any Thai restaurant worth going to better have some damn good Pad Thai. If they fail at this dish (like Busaba did), then I'm never going there ever again (at least not by choice). Thankfully, Rosa's Pad Thai was great and tasted just like it does back home. I really want to try their Tom Yum Noodle Soup, but I'll just have to wait until next time. My friend got the lamb curry and he loved it. Adorable looking Thai restaurant on Hanbury Street with red frontage, thought it seemed cute and cosy on a warm winters day. I dined by myself and had some soup followed by mango sticky rice which was incredible. Two girls next to me had fried rice which gave me food envy. The food came quickly but it took ages for the girl to come over so I could ask for the bill, so I stood up in the end. I would not say service was rude per some of the reviews but they are also not super friendly. Generally I go in with low expectations for most asian restaurants when it comes to service. The food was decent and reasonably priced. The fish cakes were a bit rubbery but overall had good flavor. I was in the neighborhood and passed by this gem of a restaurant and decided to try it. The menu was diverse and sounded great. As a frequent visitor of Thailand and one who has studied Thai cooking extensively I found this place to have authentic cuisine with a bit of local fusion as well!! I had the Thai Calamari, Red curry salmon and black pepper venison! The Thai calamari was crispy yet tender with a relish of onions, green peppers and tomatoes on top served with a tangy plum sauce!! The Red curry salmon was lightly battered and fried crispy served in a thick red curry sauce!! The salmon was moist and flaky with just enough crispiness to it!! The red curry sauce was thick (as it is in Thailand) with just enough coconut milk to give it a great flavor but allow all the flavors of the curry to shine. Not soupy like most Thai restaurants. The black pepper venison came out and looked and smelled delicious. It didn't disappoint. The meat was tender and succulent, the veggies tender crisp and the sauce was full of complex flavors. I must have walked past Rosa's a thousand times and never stopped to notice it. As soon as I walk out of Spitalfield's market I make a b-line to Brick Lane and rarely pause to take in what's round about. For whatever reason I finally broke this pattern on Sunday afternoon and noticed this beautiful red restaurant. Rosa's is a Thai restaurant with a substantial splash of trendiness in keeping with its location. Inside there is a warm, though fairly minimalist decor, red's and brown's dominating the colour scheme. We sat down on wobbly stools by large brown tables and got ready to order. Rosa's sticks mainly to the Thai classics although there are a few 'fusion' dishes like Spiced Rack of Lamb. Everything is reasonably priced between £5 and £15 and the service is very quick. My Red Curry Stir-fry was delicious and perfect with a bowl of Garlic Brown Rice (although I stunk for ages afterwards!). My friend went for the Duck with Tamarind which she also enjoyed although she claimed it was lacking a vegetable addition to ease her conscience. Rosa's recently got a drink licence and now offers and limited selection of wine and beer. I would thoroughly recommend this spot for small groups at any time of day. It's started off well when the gentleman kindly found us a table for 3 in a pretty crowded spot (nope, we didn't book on a Tuesday night, crazy right?). But then that very strange man came in, obviously drunk, and asked for our food...(one of those uncomfortable situation that you're not quite sure how to handle). Clearly, some member of the staff saw him coming in, but it seemed like ages before someone actually asked him to leave. Mew. I've seen Rosa's described as the homelier, cuter cousin of Busaba Eathai, the eponymous Thai eatery in Soho. Fortunately, this cousin is no glamour model but retains a serious and skilful hand in the kitchen underneath the cosy and charming dining room with its pink and red decor, canteen-style communal dining tables and gentle lighting. Located in the Spitalfields area, Rosa's provides a lovely place to stop off after a day's wandering round here and Brick Lane for some rock solid Thai cooking. The dining area is split into an upstairs and downstairs - I dined upstairs Some restaurants commit the crime of overcooking their meat but I was very impressed with Rosa's delicate hand in the kitchen. I enjoyed a nice moist chicken satay for starter - the peanut sauce makes this dish and the version served here was perfect. Then, I had the masaman curry, which came unusually with lamb cutlets. I like cutlets and the curry had appropriate depth of flavour. Having also discovered Song Que at lunchtime, this was a great day out in east London read more

DO NOT GO HERE! While the food may be good, the service here is HORRIBLE and the waitstaff are HEINOUS. There are too many other great Thai restaurants in London to waste your time going to Rosa's. A few of the reasons why you should avoid this place: -My group tried to make a reservation ahead of time, but they told us over the phone that we couldn't make a reservation. When we get there at 7 pm, the first thing they say when we're seated at the table is that we must leave by 8:30 pm for another reservation. We bring up our attempt to make a reservation and were rudely pushed aside. -No regard for customers. Had to ask multiple times for water, cutlery, plates, napkins, etc. -A friend of ours joined us a bit later on and ordered food. While she was still finishing her meal, they tried to push her along and clear up her plates! This was also after they cleared up the rest of our plates while she was still eating. In this country, that is considered rude. -We had ordered several bottles of their more expensive red wine for our table. We accidentally broke a glass, and red wine and 50,000 shards went everywhere. We (surprise, surprise) had no napkins at our table, and we asked the many waitstaff nearby for napkins. The woman goes off downstairs and instead brings a bill for 5 GBP for the broken glass! No regard for the fact that wine and shards were everywhere. One girl was bleeding and they didn't care to help or even show concern. We ended up getting napkins from the supply booth ourselves and cleaning up. This total lack of concern is unacceptable by any measure, and the bill for the broken glass was absurd. Again, AVOID this place. Not worth it. read more

Upon sitting down, we immediately asked our server about the restaurant's namesake Rosa... For those with even the slightest interest, read along. It's pretty boring, I've got to be honest. It's rumoured that Bud Flanagan lived upstairs and the walls at one time were covered with signed memorabilia (as well as Rosa's own birth certificate, cause why not, right?) Rosa is still alive and kickin', but is no longer behind her store front. She sold her relic of a restaurant to the current owners a little over a year ago, who have since turned it into a Thai restaurant, which consequently is absolutely fantastic. How cool that they've kept the original name and just transformed the restaurant into what they can do well? Mega cool points in my book. Airy dining room upstairs leads to a seductive basement. The service was charming and informed, you got the impression they knew their menu inside out and genuinely cared about the place they worked. More importantly the menu was a reminder of Thai travels and the beautiful food encountered on the way. Wide, comprehensive, enchanting without being needlessly complicated or distracted by the restaurants European location. I ordered a scallop, prawn, squid and mussel hot plate with chilli, garlic and (black?) peppers accompanied by Garlic Brown Rice, tasty, spicy, and subtly complex. My companions had chargrilled lamb chops and massaman curry. The lamb was tender delicately spiced and made me envious, I didn't partake in the curry but was told it was "lovely" and of a good standard. For dessert we shared a portion of mango sticky rice and coconut (?) dessert. The rice was literally sweet sticky rice with half a mango on top, not that it was bad but there were no surprises within. The coconut on the other hand looked somewhat reminiscent of fondant fancies and tasted like a lovely combination of coconut, jelly and sweetcorn. However odd that might sound it was wonderful and I could have happily eaten everyone else's share. Rosa's is always packed. In fact, when I tried to hit it up on Saturday night, they said if I didn't have a reservation then I'd be waiting on Hanbury Street for 45 minutes. This is how I learned that they have a 10% off discount for takeaway. The restaurant is nice inside, nicer than a lot of Thai places I've been to. The food is good as well, and it feels like I've tried the whole range. A lot of their curries are fantastic, the chicken green curry less so as the chicken is of a texture I've never had from a bird before. Possibly like it had been chewed up and then reconstituted. Coconut rice is good, green papaya salad is great and the soups are decent but not mind-blowing. I think they're also using green beans in place of long beans which is a little odd, but I've only gotten a long bean dish once so maybe it was a one-off. However, the prices are reasonable and the food delicious. Be warned though: if it says "spicy" it IS spicy. The Pad See Ew which is rice noodles with egg and sweet soy sauce (8 quid with tofu) was good. Summer rolls (6.25 for 4) were okay, the chilli sauce it came with was too syrupy. Tom Yum soup was also okay. However the pineapple fried rice (12 quid) which I had the highest hopes for lacked a good dose of pineapple and flavor. Think it needed a bit more salt and curry spice. What I did like was takeaway boxes come tightly sealed with a plastic wrap. Bit of a pain to get off, but it does deter your food from wafting into people's noses on the tube. read more

We ordered: - Thai Calamari (Deep-fried craispy squid served with plum sauce): very good - Grilled Pork Neck / Moo Yang (Char-grilled marinated pork served with spicy dry chilli sauce and cooled steamed vegetables): I was very excited about this but it didnt turn out good. The meat was not tender and it tasted like charcoal. The veggies and sauce was okay - Thick Red Chicken Curry / Penang Gai (Chicken Penang curry): FANTASTIC..very salty but flavourful. Almost as yeah this is thai, but it's a bit flavorless, missing the fundamental qualities that makes thailand one of the best food countries in the world. I love this little place, its decor is minimal yet warm and comforting and the low level lights in the evening make for quite a romantic date. The only thing I'd probably change as far as the design is concerned is the seating: I prefer chairs to stools so I can stretch back and relax and rub my tummy, but I guess this is just personal preference, during lunch I'm sure it's fine. The food itself was very quick to arrive and very lovingly presented. I ordered Tom Yum (rarely do I stray from this Thai classic) and some sticky rice that came in a little bamboo pot. I asked for my curry to be a little hotter than usual and they happily obliged. My friend ordered Goong Pad Noh Mai (stir-fried jumbo prawns with asparagus in oyster sauce) which was a little too fishy for me but must have been good, he finished every last morsel. This is a great Thai place to visit in the Spitalfields area. I love that the decor has a homey feel to it, it has some communal tables, and the low hung lamps give you a sense of warmth through out your visit. The restaurant has two floors, the upstairs and the basement, the upstairs is the best option. When I was there I ordered: the fresh spring rolls to share, they where delicious, then my starter was a tom yam soup, this is the best revitalizing soup in the world, and as my main the pumpkin Thai red curry, fantastic, with the right balance of spicy and the flavors bursting with every bite. NOTE: I only dropped in for coffee, I did not eat off the menu. On a recent bone chilling London day, I stopped in this place to grab something to warm up. They had placed a cute sign outside which said something like "Come on in! [List of delicious sounded hot beverages]". I was blinded by cold so probably should have looked more closely as it's clearly not a café. We realized that when we sat down but.....it was cold. And they said they had coffee. We ended up just ordering a hot chocolate and a green tea. Weirdly, we watched several couples walk in and ask if they could sit for coffee and tea and were refused. It was that odd time between lunch and dinner services (4pm) and it was pretty quiet, there were free tables all around. But, they turned person after person away, who probably also saw the sign outside and thought "hurray, warmth and hot drinks". It seems if you grabbed a seat and *then* asked (as everyone sitting had) you were served coffee/teas, otherwise it was take away only for hot beverages. The place advertised Monmouth coffee, which is excellent, but I had already caffeinated so I ordered a hot chocolate thinking the quality would be pretty good. I was served something akin to hot chocolate in a mug. It was hot, but I think it was water, and it was filled with a small scoop of the fake powdered stuff out of a can. They didn't even wipe the chocolate dust off the lip of the mug. None of the fancy extras that might have been served at a cafe (mallows, foam, etc.). My boyfriend was served loose leaf tea with no strainer :/. Looks like it might be a great Thai joint, but with a slight identity crisis. There is so much to like about Rosa's. It is smart and stylish without being pretentious. The food is excellent and has a spark of originality. The service was really good. I walked in around 7:30 on a Friday night and it was really busy, but they figured out a way to accomodate us. We were seated on the top floor (so don't know what seating is like on the bottom floor). They sat us at one of the many community tables but there was enough space so we weren't sitting on top of the people next to us. Had a delicious fried calamari appetizer--highly recommend it. It is not like Italian-style calamari. I had a lovely duck red curry with pineapples. The food was well presented, well-spiced, and nice portions. It is the best Thai I've had to date in London. I have been trying for a while to find some decent Thai food in London. I used to live in San Francisco, so my standards are pretty high, and some of the places I have tried, that were supposed to be great, disappointed. Not Rosa's though. The place is very intimate and small, but cosy and makes for a great atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and also quick. The menu is not super big, but has a great selection. The portions, are not massive, but big enough to leave Rosa's full. On a Sunday, I would always opt for the market, but besides that place is great. A few weekends back I popped over to Brick Lane with a few friends and the partner in crime, and we stopped off at Rosa's from some delicious Thai food. The interior was very funky, and had a great atmosphere with really good staff. The restaurant was spotless, and all the condiments you needed were already on your table. This included the chili flakes to make your meal the right heat for you, something I love as I'm not too good with really hot foods! The Chicken Pad Thai was amazing, one of the best I've had! The partner in crime had Beef Masaman Curry, as always, and also agreed that this was the best he had ever had too! I came here on a Sunday afternoon with my Mother who would not eat at the stalls on Brick Lane. Food was good, but I think Thai Food is always good. Its a little pricey in my opinion, considering the amazing Vietnamese up the road. I reckon it would be super cosy in the evenings, but other then that, its average. read more

Forget saying 'hello', you'd be better off saying 'sawadee' as the menu suggests, offering quirky Thai phrases to banter with friends and perhaps order more quickly? That didn't really happen here, the service was a little sluggish but that was remedied by the cute waitress asking vodka and lemonade, in the same glass? I chuckled. Tempura prawns were heavy on batter, light on taste but the thai green chicken and prawn curry was good, I devoured a full plate aside from rubbery aubergines.
