We ended up not arriving until about 9:30pm. Well as it turns out the island basically shuts down about that time, so we had no way to get to Flamenco Beach, where we intended to camp for the week. So at this point we were stranded. Luckily, a guy named Eric who worked at a dive shop in Fajardo gave us Tommy's number in case we needed a place to stay in Culebra. Tommy owns and runs the hostel. Tommy was very pleasant to deal with, and after I described the situation, he offered us a discount on a private room. The great news was that the hostel is just a 3-5 minute walk from the ferry, so we could make it without a cab. The hostel portion of Culebra International is a large dorm style room with bunk beds. There is also a community kitchen where you can keep drinks cold or cook. I took some pictures of the areas. They looked well taken care of and clean. My girlfriend and I stayed in one of the private rooms, which had a queen size bed as well as a bunk bed, and a private bathroom. The room was very clean, and has a window air conditioning unit that works quite well. We had planned to camp out all week at Flamenco Beach, but ended up coming back to stay the night before we left Culebra because it was nice to have the comforts of A/C and a bed, and be close to the ferry. Tommy was a great host. He was willing to give us a ride to Flamenco the next day, and to the airport (we decided to fly back to the big island instead of messing with the ferry) on our last day. We paid a small fee for the rides, so it was not unlike hiring a cab, but much more convenient as he was already there. I highly recommend renting a jeep (~$65/day) or golf car ($45/day) while you are in Culebra, as the island may be small but you definitely will want some transportation to go exploring. Tommy also offered complimentary coffee to me each morning, which was very nice. Other things to consider: - Culebra International is about 50 yards from the biggest grocery store on the island, and 15 yards from one of the two gas stations which also has a small convenience store. - The private rooms go for about $65-$75 depending on time of year. The cheapest room elsewhere in the off-season is $90+. - Tommy is from Louisiana originally, so no language barrier to deal with. - Tommy is happy to tell you about the island or where to go. He also offers laundry service and is a very enjoyable person to work with. If you have any other questions about Culebra, feel free to message me. What an amazing place, the hostel is clean, it's well decorated and the staff is amazingly helpful and friendly. I visited last year August 2016 I made friends with Michael (owners son) the family was so nice and caring. They would give us rides to nearest beaches, such as Tamarindo, flamenco and they where even nice enough to have my over for lunch. Long story short, this is the place to go to! I was a bit nervous to go to a hostel since I'd never been to one till then. I highly recommend this place, if you're a solo traveler it's a must do. I made so many friends on the Island! Also, the price was very reasonable for what you are getting. The room was comfortable and we loved that we had a kitchen to cook in. We went to the local grocery store to get food and prepared it in the kitchen. We also loved that there was no TV in our room because we never watch TV on vacation since it reminds us of being back home and it wastes the trip away. lol :) We loved that they also provide beach towels, aside from the bath towels. My daughters enjoyed swinging in the hammock in the front of the property. Juan greeted us personally and showed us around when we first arrived, and we felt very safe staying here. The property feels very private and quiet. It is away from the public beach entrance side of Flamenco Beach which is nice because the beach in front of this property doesn't get so crowded. While staying at Culebra we took a water taxi to Culebrita Island for a half-day trip, and that was breathtaking and a must-do. Staying at Villa Flamenco Beach was a wonderful peaceful retreat away from city-life and we loved every minute!! The location can't be beat! We HIGHLY recommend Villa Flamenco Beach to anyone. It was colourful, warm and welcoming. Culebra is not an island of big fancy 5 star hotels or casinos and that's just what I were looking for. You feel at home in Culebra the moment you are greeted at the airport by Mark or Terrie and this is something that I have never experienced before. Mark and Terrie were over the top, fantastic hosts. They were more than helpful when it came to suggestions on places to dine, activities to do that day or places to rent a kayak or bike. Not only were they friendly and accommodating but they went above and beyond what you would normally expect from a regular B&B in the states. Their thoughtfulness radiates from them like sunshine on the beach. If my boyfriend or I needed anything at all, Mark and Terrie would make sure they recommended something or got it for us. I went to Culebra during Thanksgiving vacation and wasn't expecting to find a Turkey dinner anywhere. To my surprise, I was invited upstairs to Mark and Terrie's place above the guesthouse for a HUGE feast fit for a king. It was great to converse with other guests, meet their friends from the island and get to know Mark and Terrie. I felt like a true islander that had lived here for years and not just a visitor or a guest. I stayed in the Bougainvillea Room which had a Queen sized bed. Each room at the Palmetto included a private bathroom with a shower, mini-refrigerator, an air conditioner and an alarm clock (very helpful, but we didn't use it much... hehe). They provided clean linens and also offered complementary beach towels, snorkeling gear and GREAT coffee every morning.. and this just names a few of the complementary items offered. Susan was my…read morefavorite kind of host - available to answer questions, accessible when needed, but she let us have our space. Our room was the Bougainvillea, at the back of the guesthouse. We had a coffee pot right outside our room (with the best coffee!) and also had access to a stove in the bigger kitchen. Our room had its own fridge. Each morning a homemade pastry was provided. Dining out in Culebra was mostly disappointing, so we were glad to be able to prepare some of our own meals. Other common areas include a front patio, a comfy living room, and a shady backyard with a few seating areas. Beach towels were provided as well as serviceable snorkel masks. We enjoyed chatting with guests from the Pacific Northwest and Sweden. You should be aware that there are crowing roosters in the neighborhood who do not limit themselves to mornings. I suspect you will hear them anywhere you stay on the island because wild chickens are everywhere. If you want to have the experience of what it might be like to live in Culebra, staying at the Palmetto would be a good choice.

We stayed in a room downstairs that had two double beds, table, chairs, microwave, fridge, coffee pot, plates, bowls, cups, utensils, games, soap, shampoo, books, beach towles and even dish soap and bug spray. You will need bug repellant on Culebra. They also have complimentary beach towels you can take to the beach and the outside seating area is super cute. Mary picked us up from the airport, took us on a little tour of the town and showed us where we could find golf carts. The hotel is just a couple blocks from the airport so it's walkable. We departed early in the morning and packed light so we were able to walk to the airport in the morning. The golf cart and jeep rental places are also nearby and right across from the airport. There is a grocery store down the street that we stopped in daily. I'm from a city and used to walking so we did walk to town one night for dinner which I didn't think to be a bad walk and took maybe 15 to 20 minutes. I would recommend renting a golf cart or jeep since you'll want to check out a few beaches and the best way to see the island is to drive around. You may miss out if you try to walk everywhere.

Toilet paper and towels were also in there. The owner had shower towels and big beach towels in there. Other things that came with room~ books to read, checkers board game, a blow dryer, an ice chest for your beach adventures, and beach chairs (really nice ones) They did not have a tv but who needs one when your at the beach all day. Things close by~ there is a little supermarket walking distance (right around the corner) and the famous Flamingo beach is also very close, The airport is close by as well and dinghy docks which has amazing food and highly recommended is very close to the lighthouse. Service~ Mary and David are the owners and live right upstairs so they are always there to help with anything you need. They are very friendly and originally from the states so speak English. All in all~ this was a GREAT place to stay at. We were going to originally stay at a hotel but they were all booked so found this place on trip advisors. Hotels were much more expensive and here we got everything we needed and more. I would HIGHLY recommend this place to everyone. Great friendly service, clean and they have everything you need. My partner and I have visited Culebra many times over the past years, we have stayed at many places…read moreon the island. However, once we stayed at Casita Tropical with Molly we have not stayed anywhere else. She has a number of efficiency apartments with shared cooking facilities and patios with private bathrooms. This is a great option on Culebra as it allows you to enjoy the cool breeze and gives you the option of doing your own cooking. There is a pool available and abundant coolers, floats, chairs etc available for the use of guests. Equally abundant is Molly's knowledge of the local beaches, restaurants and tours. She is always happy to share that knowledge upon request, or even invite you on her early morning snorkeling and turtle watching trips to Tamarindo beach. Her pricing is completely reasonable and the location is within walking distance of the airport. Most likely you will rent a golf cart, in that case she has abundant parking for guests. Highly recommended!

You will need to rent a vehicle to get around to the beaches or into town, but Casa Resaca offers a nice central location to anywhere you'd like to visit in Culebra. Maureen and Cliff are welcoming hosts and provided a clean and comfortable place for us to stay. The guesthouse features a public sitting and kitchen space with a hammock, sun deck, and small cooling pool to enjoy. Delicious coffee was provided each morning. You can purchase your own food/snacks at the grocery store in town, and you can store them in the mini fridge in your room and prepare them in the kitchen. It was nice to have hosts that could give all sorts of "insider info" to Culebra, such as restaurant and beach suggestions. Thanks to Cliff, we were able to see a few sea turtles at Tamarindo Beach. He told us exactly where we needed to snorkel to see them. Such a great experience! There are beach chairs, towels, and snorkel gear available to borrow and take to the beach with you. This was an added bonus, and we truly valued having these things available. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Our room was equipped with its own AC unit so we could adjust how cool we wanted the room. I recommend Casa Resaca to anyone that is considering a trip to Culebra. It's quite affordable, and we had a great experience there! We're already thinking about when we can return!

The property is right on the water with outdoor tables. The balcony from the room overlooks the bay. The room was clean and the staff very friendly. We were told that it goes for $140 during the high season. I will stay here next time i'm on Culebra.

I love the open seating area with hammocks, lounge chairs, and other seating arrangements. The staff is very friendly though not always the most helpful (for example, the light above our bed didn't work and the receptionist promised to send someone the next day who never came). But besides those small things and the fact that it's not a luxury hotel, it's a great place to stay on Culebra. Note that the openness of the floor plan does make for a fairly social atmosphere-- if you are staying here with a group of guests who are loud or like to stay up late drinking and talking, you will definitely hear them (but everyone is super friendly so you might as well join them!) Even if you aren't stay here (or if you are), I highly recommend doing a boat charter with Captain Rico. We took the boat out to Culebra with 10 or so other people and had a beautiful day. It was super relaxing-- they had all the equipment if you wanted to paddle board or snorkel, or you could just read a book on the boat. Everything was included-- lunch, beer, booze, equipment! I get very seasick on boats and Rico went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable offering to "let me drive" the boat to take my mind off of the waves. The friendly staff and gorgeous views really make Villa Boheme stand out among other guesthouses in Culebra.

CONS: No employee was available at the guest house to greet us and answer questions. The owner or manager did not take any calls, they would only respond via text one time. I called, texted, and emailed about the issues we were having and never received a response or remedy. We did not receive the text with the code to enter our room, the cleaning lady had to let us in. Our room was double booked. Another patron walked in on us while we were...ahem, in a delicate situation. The shower water does not heat up. The kitchen and bathroom sinks get warm, but the shower is cold. The wifi code and password shown on the side of the building is in accurate. We did not have wifi at all during our 3 day trip. Every time you adjust the temperature or fiddle with the air conditioner, it changes the channel on the tv. The rooster crowing our window woke us up between 4 and 5 every day. The lights on the building shown in the windows. The floor is slippery, whatever type of wax or tile they have is dangerous. Upon our arrival, guests were leaving because they were issued a small, unfinished room. They had been visiting Ulala for 6 years but will never return because of the horrible service and lacking rooms provided by the new owners.

I can't remember if there was a microwave. The bathroom was small, but very clean. It had a sink, toilet, and a nice shower. Small soaps and shampoos were provided. The bed was extremely comfortable and faced a TV with a long list of channels. Overall the room was a little small, but very comfortable and clean. No real complaints there, although the WiFi was a joke. I could only get a signal when I sat on the balcony. But the view of the water made up for any issues. It was gorgeous and I highly recommend sitting on the balcony to enjoy the sunset. It was a very nice stay, and I will return if I come back to Culebra in the future!

I asked him to called a cab for us at 8 am and 45 minutes later I called him back to ask if he had called the taxi and he came to our room yelling at us, saying that he was sleeping.. he was screaming at my face and threating me and I started to call forf help...other people came out and he stopped his aggression. I had to check out at 9 am because of his attitude. I also woke up with whelps/rash and they were BED BUGS bites.. no coffee,. No help taking the luggage many steps up without lighting on the upper stairwell, no pick up at the airport, tiny room (8 by 10!). He always talks yelling at you.. We asked for an extra mattress and the one he brought it was old, falling apart, even with blood spots.. I had to sleep with my friend in the bed. There are many wild roosters and they started crowing at 3 am and forward. One of them was at my window which I had to shoo him away at 4 am. The location is very UNDESIREABLE, far from everything and overlooking some favelas/dump. The owner is an Angry man with many issues and he should NOT be running a business. And if you need any time or help don't count on him.. I spoke with other hotel managers in the island and they all told me that they heard many complaints about this hotel owner before and everyone said the same thing: he is arrogant and It is past his time to retire.
