Rooster!
Pepper M.

A welcoming guesthouse near the airport and with easy walking distance to town. Susan was my favorite kind of host - available to answer questions, accessible when needed, but she let us have our space. Our room was the Bougainvillea, at the back of the guesthouse. We had a coffee pot right outside our room (with the best coffee!) and also had access to a stove in the bigger kitchen. Our room had its own fridge. Each morning a homemade pastry was provided. Dining out in Culebra was mostly disappointing, so we were glad to be able to prepare some of our own meals. Other common areas include a front patio, a comfy living room, and a shady backyard with a few seating areas. Beach towels were provided as well as serviceable snorkel masks. We enjoyed chatting with guests from the Pacific Northwest and Sweden. You should be aware that there are crowing roosters in the neighborhood who do not limit themselves to mornings. I suspect you will hear them anywhere you stay on the island because wild chickens are everywhere. If you want to have the experience of what it might be like to live in Culebra, staying at the Palmetto would be a good choice.

My BFF in the backyard garden where we enjoyed our coffee.

We stayed in a room downstairs that had two double beds, table, chairs, microwave, fridge, coffee pot, plates, bowls, cups, utensils, games, soap, shampoo, books, beach towles and even dish soap and bug spray. You will need bug repellant on Culebra. They also have complimentary beach towels you can take to the beach and the outside seating area is super cute. Mary picked us up from the airport, took us on a little tour of the town and showed us where we could find golf carts. The hotel is just a couple blocks from the airport so it's walkable. We departed early in the morning and packed light so we were able to walk to the airport in the morning. The golf cart and jeep rental places are also nearby and right across from the airport. There is a grocery store down the street that we stopped in daily. I'm from a city and used to walking so we did walk to town one night for dinner which I didn't think to be a bad walk and took maybe 15 to 20 minutes. I would recommend renting a golf cart or jeep since you'll want to check out a few beaches and the best way to see the island is to drive around. You may miss out if you try to walk everywhere.

Bathroom~ shower was warm, clean and there was a bar of soup and a bottle of shampoo in the shower. Not the little bottles of shampoo but a big bottle of strawberry VO5 waiting for you. Toilet paper and towels were also in there. The owner had shower towels and big beach towels in there. Other things that came with room~ books to read, checkers board game, a blow dryer, an ice chest for your beach adventures, and beach chairs (really nice ones) They did not have a tv but who needs one when your at the beach all day. Things close by~ there is a little supermarket walking distance (right around the corner) and the famous Flamingo beach is also very close, The airport is close by as well and dinghy docks which has amazing food and highly recommended is very close to the lighthouse. Service~ Mary and David are the owners and live right upstairs so they are always there to help with anything you need. They are very friendly and originally from the states so speak English. All in all~ this was a GREAT place to stay at. We were going to originally stay at a hotel but they were all booked so found this place on trip advisors. Hotels were much more expensive and here we got everything we needed and more. I would HIGHLY recommend this place to everyone. Great friendly service, clean and they have everything you need. Love love loved it!

Bellavista Bed and Breakfast is the best place to stay on Saint Thomas and let me tell you why. Location: The bed and breakfast is halfway up a sizable hill, so you get a clear view of the cruise ship harbor, the ocean, and all of Charlotte Amelie, the second biggest town on the island. It's far enough away from downtown that you can't really hear it, but close enough that a quick 5 minute walk will get you where you want to go. Facilities: An amazing house with surprisingly strong security; if she didn't point it out to you, you wouldn't notice it at all. The house is very open during the day and locked up tight at night time. The house itself is gorgeous with a lovely open living room and a balcony off the kitchen where Wendy, the owner, serves her amazing breakfasts (more on that later). There is a private deck side pool for when you want to skip coki beach and just be somewhere quiet. The rooms are just what you need, and she keeps them immaculate. Breakfast: Prepared to be blown away. My wife and I are pretty used to hotel continental breakfasts: contrasted with Wendy's food the hotels are serving you rubbish. Wendy prepares beautiful meals with fresh fruit, everything made from scratch, and frequently with self made smoothies. Breakfast isn't something you'd ever expect to be this good; for us it was the best part of everyday, and we had some really good days. Wendy: Yeah she's an amenity all by herself. She's incredibly friendly, very funny, and gives you the most personal service you've ever had. She knows practically everything about the island and what to do, she knows exactly who and when to call for cabs, and on top of this runs the whole B&B almost single handedly. She's one of the nicest people you will ever meet. All in all you're going to be getting an experience better than some of the activities on the island you'll be booking. Wouldn't you rather have an amazing experience you can rely on everyday than just the regular old hotel trip? I would, and I am so glad I stayed here.

Planning a destination wedding during a pandemic was nerve-wracking- my husband and I did not have the luxury of seeing different venue spaces in person, so it was truly a lot of work- but with the help of email, zoom meetings, we had the wedding I have always dreamed of. Our event was a Sunday and we had our wedding rehearsal, the morning of the wedding started. We met the hair and makeup artists on the grounds from 9AM and as a large group of 12: we reserved the gorgeous Almendra Family Suite (it slept 6) to get dolled up. It was the perfect space for us to spread out safely! I sipped champagne, swung on hammocks, and got ready with my girlfriends while we waited for guests to arrive from the shuttles. Walking the rocky paths of this epic horse ranch/colonial mansion in heels, littered with fallen mangos and avocados, with my cathedral veil and gown's train in 100 degrees did not phase me because my heart was going to explode. We danced all night long, ate incredible food. It truly wowed all our friends and families, made absolutely stunning photos. We are approaching our anniversary in one month. Friends tell me, to this day, that our's was the most beautiful and fun wedding they have ever been to. I can't be humble about it. It honestly was like a Fellini movie! After the wedding ended at 11 PM, a ton of people piled into shuttles to go back to San Juan. Those of us who rented rooms at the venue to relax, got together and lounged by the pool! I loved that a few rooms were a part of wedding contract, so that encouraged some more buddies to rent rooms. The next morning, we were all met with a beautiful breakfast- not unlike the colorful flowers everywhere on the property. We hope to come back to stay as guests very soon!!!

We recently stayed at the Rainforest Inn during our trip to Puerto Rico, and I want to share our…read morehonest experience both the good and the bad. This is simply our experience, and I'm not interested in debating or defending how we felt. To start with the positives: before booking, I read many reviews and was excited about supporting what appeared to be a small business run by a husband and wife. The property itself is absolutely beautiful , truly breathtaking scenery. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and surprisingly cool despite there being no air conditioning. The cooling system on the beds was amazing. We also did the hike on the property, which was beautiful and definitely one of the highlights of our stay. The wife was incredibly pleasant, welcoming, and knowledgeable about hospitality. She made us feel comfortable from the beginning. Unfortunately, several interactions with the husband left us feeling uncomfortable throughout our stay. Each morning, coffee and tea were offered to guests. One morning, since we planned to hike, we politely declined coffee multiple times. Despite saying no several times, the offer continued in a way that felt oddly tense, as though our declining offended him. During conversation, he openly mentioned that his wife often tells him he comes across as rude. He also praised her hospitality skills, and honestly, I completely agreed with him on that point. What really unsettled me happened when we were signing waivers for the hike. He handed me the waiver with a pen attached. After I passed the paperwork to my husband, my husband reached for the pen, and instead of handing it to him directly, the pen was tossed toward him. Whether intentional or not, the interaction immediately rubbed me the wrong way and changed the energy for me completely. For context, we are a Black couple, and while I cannot say what anyone's intentions were, some of the interactions throughout our stay felt uncomfortable enough that it became hard not to notice. Especially in the way my husband was treated at times. Another example: he offered to send horseback riding information to me. Since I didn't have my phone nearby, I asked twice for the information to be sent to my husband instead. Despite that, the information was still sent to me. The final issue involved the laundry area. We were washing a small load of clothes and some towels during the allowed hours. A few minutes into drying, he opened the dryer himself, removed my personal clothing including bras and underwear -- and left them sitting on top of the washer. He later sent a text saying the dryer was overloaded and making noise, although the load was not packed tightly and was smaller than the load left behind by the previous guests. What bothered me most was not the concern about the machine, but the fact that my personal undergarments were handled instead of simply asking us to adjust the load ourselves. None of these incidents individually caused a confrontation because we chose to remain respectful and calm throughout our stay. However, taken together, they left a stain on what otherwise could have been an excellent experience. Afterward, I revisited some of the lower rated reviews and noticed that several other guests also mentioned discomfort with the husband's demeanor and communication style. I also noticed responses to criticism often seemed defensive. Again, this review is not written to argue with the owners or invite debate from strangers online. This was our experience, and no one gets to tell us how we should feel about the interactions we had during our stay.

When I arrived I was checked in and given a tour of the attractive property by the staff member on duty. My room was spacious and comfortable along with the bathroom that had a shower in it. The ac worked well too. The TV was a smaller screen that I think was less than 32" and was mounted high up on the wall so TV watching could be better. The room had a small refrigerator in it. Shortly after checking in I received a series of text messages from the owner regarding information about Isabel II such as restaurants nearby, grocery stores, taxi info, tour companies, etc, which was helpful. Bravo Beach is well maintained with 2 freshwater pools and less than 20 rooms all with outdoor facing entrances. It is located directly on the water with a beach but swimming is not allowed or desired from the shell beach however the beach is available for walking. The hotel does offer the free use of beach supplies like coolers and folding chairs, etc. if you need them. They do have their own small parking lot and more parking next to the hotel but I'm not sure they have enough parking if all of their rooms are full. The hotel is located about a 6-7 minute walk from the ferry terminal. If I returned to Vieques I would be happy to stay at Bravo Beach Hotel again.

This lovely little inn has true island charm--from the private, screened-in outside shower replete with tropical plants, sea glass mobiles, and walls bedecked with sea shells and corral, to the open-air common room with beautifully tiled mosaic floors of local sea life, and birds chirping all around. The location was perfect for us. It was a reasonable stroll to the beach bars and ferry (by way of the path along the pond). But the distance from those "lively" spots means that an evening spent on the veranda at the inn is restful, not like your third-story balcony over M Street in Georgetown. When we booked our trip in March, it was with Kathleen, but when we arrived it was the new owners, Eileen and John, who greeted us. Every thing had been handled so seamlessly that, if they had not told us of their new occupation as inn owners, we would not have known there had been a hand-off. From the helpful hospitality and excellent breakfasts, to the morning greeting of Fiona and Cooper (their dogs), we found this garden by the sea a genuine West Indies experience.
