I had lunch at cute little Rosa's Cafe in Ogden last week. I had a Chile Colorado Burrito and my friend had a Chile Verde Burrito. They both have shredded pork and if you order the plate they come with rice and beans. Luis tried to warn me against ordering the Chile Colorado, saying it was extremely hot but I was stubborn and ordered it anyway. Umm, it was like eating fire!!! Ordered the Pork Chile Verde Burrito, smothered in half and half chile verde and chile Colorado. While I enjoyed both sauce varieties, I preferred the salsa verde. Both have a nice medium heat and plenty of flavor. I got the combo which comes with rice and beans. A solid choice for brunch, lunch or late lunch/early dinner, with a great cafe/diner feel. Awesome little Mexican diner. We drove past it the first time. Easy to miss as the sign just says "Cafe". Very small - one side is a counter with old fashioned stools. The other side has 4 small tables that will each seat 4. You order at the counter from the menu on the wall. The staff are SUPER friendly and engaging. My wife and I busted up when we read the bottom of the menu, which kind of pokes fun at how Hispanics pronounce English words that start with S. (check out the photo) My wife's dad is from Argentina, so we could relate. The owner was so excited to see us laughing at their little menu joke, as most "gringos" don't pick up on it. This is authentic Mexican food!!! Nice heat, tons of flavor, fresh ingredients and made from scratch. The chile verde and Colorado burritos pack a nice punch. If you aren't a big fan of "es-spicy" food, try the picadillo burrito - ground beef and potatoes. My wife had that one and it was tasty. They will give you a squirt bottle of fresh salsa if you request it. It's really good. There were more people in the diner speaking Spanish than English, which is always a solid indicator of authentic Mexican food. They make their own tortillas. There's something about those hole in the wall diners/cafe's that I just can't pass up. Rosa's cafe should never be passed up. Breakfast available all day, or until they run out. My Father and I went into Rosa's for dinner last night, and were pleasantly surprised! We both got the chile verde burrito ($5.95), turned it into a plate for $9.95 and smothered the burrito for $2 additional charge. Upon first bite, the burrito was extremely hot, the pork cooked perfectly in a fresh tortilla. Large portions, the rice was delicious, although the beans, unfortunately weren't anything to write home about. They offer some beverages, Jarritos, Horchata (which was alright, but I won't get upon my return visit.) All in all, Rosa's managed to deliver one of the best burritos I have ever had in my life. And being From Texas, that's saying a lot. I hate leftovers. But for Rosa's, I made an exception. read more

Mexican food in Utah....it was once like a unicorn or a leprechaun, you heard it exists but you have yet to find it. However, that has been changing up and down the Wasatch front for awhile and currently there are a bevy of delicious Mexican restaurants to choose from. News flash, Rosa's Cafe is one of them. Warning: If you enjoy typical Utah sweet food over a touch spice, then Rosa's may not be for you. In fact, you will be told that the Chile Colorado is spicy. It has some heat to it and if you are not a heat fan, it will be too much. Fortunately, the Chile Verde is a milder option that is available or you can choose not to smother your burrito. Or you can order one of their non-burrito options. Prices are reasonable (about $7 for burrito + 2 to smother it and another $2-3 to make it a plate with rice and beans or my choice of double beans). For the price, you get a large burrito filled with nothing but delicious meat and no fillers. The restaurant is small; therefore, not great for groups larger than 4 people. Also, make sure you go to the counter to order your food cause besides bringing your food to you, it's self serve. That goes for your beverages and asking at the counter for condiments (like sour cream and one of their 3 salsas). The staff is very nice and friendly. Among the staff, I believe, you'll find the owners who gladly speak with the customers. Food....I enjoyed the Chile Colorado Burrito and beans. It was a spicier Colorado than I've had before at the Red Iguana in SLC. I think Red Iguana has deeper and more complex flavor than Rosa's, but both are good. I also enjoyed the beans. I thought they had a good flavor and texture. Overall, Rosa's has some great food and I look forward to trying more of it. If after trying a few more items with the same success, I would be inclined to increase the rating. For now, I'm leaving it 4.5 out of 5 because I would choose other places (Red Iguana & Chile-Tepin) that I like over Rosa's. However, Rosa's is the best that I've tried North of SLC. So, if you are up in Ogden checking out a flick or going to the tree museum, drive about .7 miles South and stop in at Rosa's. Great people and some really good food. read more

I really wanted to like this place more. My husband and I couldn't wait to try it because of all the great reviews here. But I was unimpressed. The menu is either a few breakfast items (which they don't serve all day like other Mexican restaurants in town) or burritos. LOTS of burritos (7 or 8). The special was some sort of skirt steak, but I don't go to Mexican restaurants for steak. But unfortunately I *really* don't like burritos. Tacos, enchiladas, chile rellenos, tamales--yes. Love all of those. But all they had was burritos. I understand having a limited menu but surely a little variety would be good? I had the Picadillo with Chile Colorado. It was just ok. Decent flavors. My husband had the Chile Verde burrito smothered in Chile verde and really liked it. But they were also HUGE. We only got through half of each. (If you don't have a big appetite I suggest taking a friend and splitting one. You will have plenty.) And something to consider if you have kids--no small portions of anything for them to eat. The bread pudding was delicious and --uniquely --they put a scoop of strawberry ice cream on top. Also bring someone to share. I will go back to try their breakfast because I love chorizo and eggs. But overall I was disappointed with the selection and hope they get a little more variety in their offerings. Until then I'll be getting my enchilada fix elsewhere. UPDATE: tried the breakfast with a friend. Chorizo and eggs was good. Would have loved a little bit of spice in the chorizo, but the flavor was still tasty. I asked for no beans and got beans. In general we had a hard time getting our order right because the gentleman had a language barrier. They were very busy on a Sunday which we liked to see. But--there was a family there eating something that was not on the breakfast menu. And I kind of felt like if they serve lunch items at breakfast, why can't they serve breakfast items at lunch? read more

This place is solid. We took a train to Ogden for the day and found this thanks to the many positive Yelp reviews. We don't know how many restaurants have been here before, but clearly a previous incarnation must have been a retro diner. Seating is limited-capacity appears to be about 24. Sit at the counter if you can-we liked the diner barstools. Even during the late lunch hour, we noticed a lot of people picking up, so that's one way to get around the limited seating. There really is a Rosa and all of the recipes are hers. Apparently, she is from New Mexico and this cuisine is heavily influenced by the type of Mexican cuisine prevalent there. We had the smothered chili verde burrito. Wonderfully garlicky pork in it-actually didn't need to get it smothered. Chili Colorado was spicy and almost as delicious. Topped with the cool avocado sauce and it was perfect. Rice and beans on the side were good. The rice was well-seasoned and moist. The stars of the meal were the garlicky pork inside the burritos, the avocado sauce (did it have a hint of mint in it? Something gave it a very cool, fresh flavor. I could not quite figure it out), AND everything wrapped in the dense, chewy, HUGE homemade flour tortillas. The portions are huge. You could probably get a burrito plate - that's a burrito with rice and beans - and split it. Or just split a burrito and pass on the rice and beans. Then you could order an extra tortilla for $1.50 just because it's so delicious and dip it in avocado sauce. And before you leave, order one more giant tortilla, wrap it in a napkin and put it in your purse to eat for later when you're recalling how good that tortilla was. p.s. it was very clean read more

A small location that provides southern style mexican food at excellent prices. The owners are from New Mexico but originally from Juarez which is reflected in their dishes. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros w/ potatoes and refried beans (8.00). Scrambled eggs topped with a fiery salsa, cheese on top of a tostada. Top it with their chile del arbol sauce if you dare. I've been eyeing this 5 star yelp restaurant for a long time. Finally had the chance to stop by for lunch today. I ordered the Colorado burrito to go because I was in a hurry. That was a mistake! These burritos are not made for on the go. The minute I opened the aluminum foil there was red sauce all over the place. The burrito was hard to hold as well, I think I would have enjoyed the burrito more if I had sat inside the restarurant, burrito on a plate, consuming it with a fork and knife. The contents of the burrito ended up at the bottom of the tortilla. This burrito was meant to be eating horizontally and not vertically, which is impossible to do without a fork and knife! The burrito was really simple - flour tortilla, shredded pork in red sauce and pinto beans. I believe this is why they are so cheap, nice and simple. The flavor of the burrito was really good, the flour tortilla was thicker than most and quite big. The beans get lost in the flavor of the shredded pork. By the time I was done I needed additional napkins. My hands were orange, my lips were orange, and a pool of sauce was accumulating in the aluminum foil. The pork started off with good flavor and the heat slowly started to heat up my mouth. There is just something really special about food that slowly get hot. My eyes were in tears by the time I was done with the burrito, both from the taste and the heat! I'd like to go back again and sit in the restaurant and enjoy the food a bit more. This is a place to enjoy at the restaurant and not while driving. read more

We had the smothered burritos and may I say they very well might be the best I've ever had. Finally made it into Ogden to Rosa's Cafe while they were open (note they are closed on Mondays, I found out the hard way). The menu is small, a handful of burritos including Verde, Colorado, Picadillo, bean, etc. and a selection of breakfast items and the option to make anything into a plate with rice and beans. There are a few more items including deserts, quesadillas, specials, etc. I could not decide between the Chile Verde and the Chile Colorado burritos, other reviews talked them both up so I had to try them both. The wife opted for a breakfast burrito with ham, eggs, and potatoes. The Colorado burrito had plenty of flavor and a mild heat, the Verde had even more flavor and heat. Both burritos were large with a small amount of beans and a generous portion of meaty Chile wrapped in a large homemade flour tortilla. Two burritos were a bit too much food, even for a big eater like me, but I am glad I tried both. I will be back and i would be happy to have either of these, if I am in the mood for heat I will go green, if I a feeling a bit timid I will go red both are awesome. Our group was on a ski trip from NYC and Lake Tahoe, and looking for some Mexican food. Rosa's is a small casual spot. One of the better burritos I've had to date. The food is large portions, and on the spicier side. I went with the Chile Colorado smothered burrito plate (w/ rice and beans).
