Roots: The Brunch Experience is a must visit on Chicago's South Side! The atmosphere celebrates Black culture with a beautiful aesthetic, and the music made the entire experience even better. The staff was professional and welcoming from start to finish. One thing to know: reservations are required for dining (except for the bar), so be sure to plan ahead. The menu has plenty of options for everyone, but the lobster mac was the absolute star of the show. It was rich, flavorful, and hands down one of the best dishes I've had. If you're looking for great food, amazing vibes, and a restaurant worth coming back to, Roots should definitely be on your list. I'll absolutely be back!

Went there for a lunch with coworkers and had the small gumbo and wing flight were really really good. They also had a cucumber water which was refreshing. The service was really good and the vibe was just very family friendly community nice the service was prompt and pleasant and attentive the only thing is that one of the plates was chipped and I would just hate to see someone take advantage of that so they may need to just not serve those chipped plates, but the bathrooms were clean. The restaurant was clean. Everything was nice and their street parking and the food again was really really good. Make a reservation and then also it's BYOB for now. They are working on their liquor license so I'll have to check it out with all these things. I will definitely be back because there were other menu items that looked amazing that other patrons were ordering.

I was visiting for the weekend & looked up brunch spots the morning of. So happy we chose this spot. We were walk ins so we sat at the bar. It opens at 8am and by 9:15 when we arrived it was already packed. The waitress was so sweet & kept checking on us. I had the catfish & grits and my friend had the waffles & everything was amazing! The catfish was so crispy & flavorful!

Visited Roots" The Brunch Experience" with my Mom. I made reservations, so upon arrival, we just had to wait ~ 5 minutes. I highly recommend booking reservations as the line started queuing up after we were seated and most of them had not made reservations and ended up having to wait quite some time. Moving on... the ambience is beautiful. The culture and history in the building really stands out, and its a lovely homage to the ancestors. To top it off, we thought the decor/color scheme was well done, and even loved that during the warmer months, they had the front of the restaurant open...and it just added to the overall ambience. Nice clean space, and the music was at just the right volume where you can enjoy it and still have a conversation without having to shout (iykyk). Now to the food/service... The service was top-tier. Ade was our server, and I would certainly love to have him on my next visit. Yes, I already know I'll be back! Anywho, he checked on us, but didn't smother us. He was very attentive, and prompt when we needed anything. Also, just a nice guy. The 'bus-girl' was good as well. The food was absolutely delicious!! My Mom ordered a blueberry mocktail and that was delicious as well. Hats off to the cooks and whoever is making the drinks. We had gumbo to start (good), salmon croquette meal (good), lemon blueberry crumble waffle (delicious), caramelized peach kiss French toast (delish!...some of the best I've had). The flavors of the french toast were outstanding, and I didn't even use much the cinnamon glaze...had that on the side. Didn't need anything extra really, it was that good. Go ahead and book your reservation now, you will not be disappointed.

Gratuity is added to all checks. BYOB. I would recommend reservations if you have a large group or don't come early because there doesn't seem to be a waiting area. The ambiance is cute when you walk in the colors are black and gold. My waitress was Lexi she was very nice and efficient She let me know ahead of time if there wasn't something available. I appreciate the chairs at the bar are wide enough for wider hip people and comfortable. This place is BYOB they serve mocktails. I had the front porch punch which add a pineapple base. I personally wasn't a fan of it. I ordered the ancestor pot (smaller version). They do offer a larger portion. I also had the flight of wings and the flight of French toast. The French toast flight came with a peach flavor, brown foster, and red velvet. The French toast had great flavor not overwhelming, very moist. The only flavor that needed syrup was the red velvet. The ancestor pot (gumbo) had good flavor. It definitely has a savory feel to it. The chicken andouille sausage gave it a good spice. Now the chicken flight came with 3 wings of each flavor. There was a garlic parmesan flavor, Thai chili flavor, and I want to say buffalo. All the flavors were good on the wings my only complaint is the garlic parmesan wasn't garlicky enough for me and I felt like the "dressing" on the outside was just that It taste like a store-bought product. Also I'm unsure if they just cook the wings too long or they were old because they were a bit tough to bite into.

What I ordered vs what I received. I ordered Blueberry Lemon French Toast and "Thick Applewood Bacon " crispy. What I received was thin cut bacon cooked on one side and almost raw on the other. The french toast was delicious until I found a piece of plastic on my plate that ended up in the mouth due to it blended in with the fruit compote and icing. I didn't write this review to hurt the business. I wrote it so that the powers that be that run or own this place will get back to basics and either re-train their staff or remind them that haste makes waste. The outcome of this story is the management didn't apologize. However she was accommodating. The restaurant is beautiful and the food (except for the bacon) was delicious. ( pray over your food always)

This resturant was beautifully decorated which created a vibe of relaxation and summer time chicago. They let up the windows and it was still a comfortable temperature. The food was good. The shrimp and grits were worth a taste, but the peach French toast was delicious. It came with a catfish filet that needed just a splash of hot sauce, which they dont have so byob! Speaking of byob, they do have a byob ($15 corkage fee) and offer a liter of juice for 12. They offer other mocktail options to accommodate the byob. Our server was polite, but be patient when you go. It is worth it.

They also have a patio, and with the weather being nice, it was easy to just sit outside and relax for a while. I was honestly too hungry to spend much time deciding, so I just ordered one of the sourdough donut ball. It was exactly what I was hoping for. The outside had a light coating of sugar that gave it just the right amount of sweetness without being too much. Once I bit into it, the inside was soft, airy, and slightly chewy from the sourdough, which made it different from a regular donut. There was a subtle tang from the sourdough that balanced the sweetness really well, so it never felt overly sugary. It had a light crispness on the outside, then a warm, pillowy center that practically melted away with each bite. I finished it way faster than I expected. The only thing I forgot was ordering something to drink with it. Looking back, a good coffee would've made it even better. Still, I'd definitely stop by again the next time I'm in the area.

Our family and extended family often ordered birthday cakes from them, and their mango cake was our favorite. When mangoes were in season, they used plenty of fresh mango in the cakes. Their cakes are always fresh, light, fluffy, and not too sweet. My daughter and I also love their individual cakes, especially the Black Pearl and Walnut Cake. Their pineapple buns and egg tarts are her favorites as well. Saint Anna has also been part of our daughter's childhood. When she was little, my husband used to bring her here before or after Chinese school in Chinatown on Sundays. Her go-to breakfast items were the Butter Bun, Ham and Macaroni in Soup, and Diced Ham and Corn in Cream Rice. As she got older, Curry Chicken with Potato became her favorite. She especially loved the potato cubes soaked in the delicious, mild curry sauce. She would always ask for more potatoes and less chicken, haha! Saint Anna is a family-run business, and Sara and Irene, the daughters-in-law, used to take care of the front of house. They were always so friendly and accommodating. After a 6-year hiatus, we finally returned one Friday recently when we happened to be in the area with a friend. Sara is now a co-owner, and it was wonderful to see her again. She immediately recognized us and was so warm and welcoming. She even asked me to relay her greetings to my sisters when she greeted us and again when we were leaving. Those little gestures made our return feel especially meaningful. We were still full from a big dim sum lunch, so my daughter picked up 2 Mini Pineapple Buns and 2 Paper-Wrapped Sponge Cakes, while I got a Red Bean Roll. Everything was fresh, soft, and delicious, and the total came to just under $8, really a great value. Our friend also purchased 2 Fried Sticky Rice Dumplings with Chicken. I had never really paid attention to their limited dim sum selection before, so that was a nice discovery. We love Saint Anna and will definitely be back whenever we're in the area.
