Stopped in for a late lunch and it was okay. Everyone at the table had something different which was nice to see. We had burgers, tenderloins, fish, and salmon. The fish was super greasy and the tarter just looked like mayo. The burgers looked good, the tenderloin was pretty salty, the salmon was cut into quite a few times and over cooked. The side salad was $6.00 and it was lettuce, cheese, a lot of onions, and croutons. I would have liked for the food to be a little fresher and not as salty. The server had a trainee and was attentive but served every drink from the top of the glass which isn't my favorite. If there were options to give half points I would give this a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Even though I wish I could give it more. The atmosphere of the place was very cozy and yet felt like a place tourists can go to. The customer service from my experience was wonderful. Even though you can tell the people there were new or had lack of experience they still were very professional, direct, and honest. When my friends and I got seated we were treated to free popcorn which was delicious. I tried out their Southern burger which was the burger of the month at the time with only Cheese, Ketchup, Bacon, Bacon sauce (a jam like sauce with bits of bacon in it), and some grilled onions I believe with a side order of French fries and a Cherry Coke. Originally I had a sweet tea however the water was contaminated so and the sweet tea which used water tasted funny so I asked for a replacement drink. Anyway, the food wasn't bad. I didn't hate my burger however I think the buns were too soggy at first and it was really hot. But once it cooled down a bit it tasted very good. The fries could be seasoned better but weren't bad. These are the only item that was good and there's not much to say about them. For mains, one of us got the beer battered fish. Person eating this will truly eat anything and they barely touched it. Stated there was a "funky" taste. Next is crispy chicken wrap with onion rings. Let me start off by saying an upcharge of 3.50 for ONION RINGS is insane.. especially considering they were so poorly done. They just tasted awful... Again, we were wondering if they were burnt or if it was the oil. We determined it was the oil being dirty and needing to be changed out. No crunch, really thick breading. This is never what someone is wanting in an onion ring.. The wrap was a dry/hard tortilla with barely any chicken and a load of wet shredded lettuce with a microscopic amount of ranch. The chili. This was so bad. Just based off of smell I was worried about it, but I wasn't the one eating it. The meat had a crazy consistency.. like it was so old it was disintegrating. The taste was horrible. The person that ate this had pretty gnarly stomach issues for the next couple of hours. I'm truly not understanding the reputation of this place. It's SO over priced and SO bad. OK, so I went back and gave Roots another try. They definitely redeemed theirselves. I sat at the bar again like I did the last time and I got good service. There was also a man behind the bar loading up beer that told me I should try the burger of the month. I tried the burger of the month last time and that was what failed me, but this time I took his suggestion and I tried it again. The burger of the month was Oktoberfest Dad Bod Brat Burger! This was a brat smash burger topped with horseradish, Havarti, grilled peppers and onions, and smeared with beer cheese served on a pretzel bun with horseradish mustard. This was a sloppy burger, one I would consider a knife and fork burger. This burger was delicious and juicy and I would definitely place this order again! I had the tater tots again. They were good last time. I had a cocktail that was called Indiana Cherry Bomb and it was Four Roses bourbon, infused cherries, and cherry Coke, I really like this drink. Everything was not perfect, but miles from the last experience I had in this burger bar. The part that was not perfect I wanted to try their other drink of the month which was a Pink Warrior and they could not make it because they did not have the cotton candy in stock yet. It was the first day of the month which started the new specials. A friend let me know that they have really good coney dogs there and I love a good coney dog so I will definitely be going back to give that a try. Was in town for the 4th of July so I decided to check out Roots as I had been a Scotty's fan for years and this is the next restaurant he has opened. First loved the free popcorn and outdoor seating. Luckily it was great weather. Service was promp and the menu offered a lot of good choices. I was in the mood for seafood so decided to try the fried fish and coleslaw. It was very good. The vast majority of their tables are high-tops, making the restaurant incredibly difficult for wheelchair users. I have reviewed this bar before and I always have a great experience here. Scott the owner is an amazing person. I can tell he really cares about the quality of the food he makes. This is my absolute favorite bar in Muncie. I've been working in the restaurant business for almost 10 years and this food and menu is exceptional. If I had the chance to work here I would. I'm a kitchen manager now, but I have been a cook for most of my life. My favorite is the PB&J burger, it's nice and juicy the seasonings on the burger are phenomenal. Yesterday my Dad and I both got to check out a local Muncie burger joint called Roots Burger Bar! We were in Muncie to check out my cousin Jalen playing in his basketball game for the Ball State Cardinals. Go Cards! #CHIRPCHIRP #24 Roots is practically on Ball State's campus in an area that has several restaurants, shops, and a few bars for students to walk to or drive in. I looked up Roots, on Yelp of course, and suggested my Dad and I take a stop to grab a bite before the 1:00 PM game started. Parking is free on the side of a few restaurants including Roots and we were able to be seated right away for 2. We arrived right when the Michigan vs Ohio State football game was starting so that, along with other sporting events were playing on multiple screens they have inside. The interior is very open and lots of sunlight comes through the big windows. I like the seating arrangements, some of the booth areas have big comfortable looking leather seats. The burger bar can definitely accommodate larger groups. Roots is known for smashed thin patties that apparently our home state of Indiana is known for making more popular. You can order a single patty or double or triple it up. I decided to order the single patty, Wise Original burger and it comes with lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles and this yummy Secret Sauce. The sauce is a smoky honey mustard flavor. There is no cheese on that burger which is good for me. (I have to watch my dairy intake). They also give you a free bucket of popcorn at your table to munch on while you wait for your burger! I like the stamp they put on top of the burger. It's their brand and it really makes for a great foodie pic! You can order your burger with one side so I chose the tots! The potato lover in me appreciated dipping my tots in ketchup and the secret sauce. (Ask for an extra side of that stuff). I just drank water this time, but if you can tolerate dairy it looks like they have some delicious milkshakes worth trying. I can't order it but maybe you should give it a try! Cement floors and hard surfaces and lots of televisions. The server staff knew their stuff. I really enjoyed my burger (the Nashville Hot Burger), but it is not for the meek. Fries were good and salads were good. I also like a place that has tots not just fries, which they do. They could use a few more local beers to be a real burger bar. The one major downer is handing out popcorn to everyone as they come in. Totally unnecessary. Makes a mess and the smell of popcorn as you enter is overpowering. I came here before heading over to the civic theatre for a production. Despite there being a festival going on in front of the establishment, I was happy to find free parking in the back. Our group was able to be sat right away, which was nice. Our server, a young man who was excellent the entire time, took drink orders. When time to order, he said the PB&J burger is a customer favorite so that's what I went with. It had grape jelly, PB, fresh jalapeños, bacon, and cheese. I was in Muncie for lunch. The first place I looked at didn't open until 3pm. I started looked around and even though it had a 3 and a half rating, I was sold on Roots when I could check-in to Yelp and get a free order of wings. That's all it took for me to make a trip to Roots! And the bartender didn't even know that about a Yelp check-in. I love Yelp! Roots sits downtown on with outside seating with umbrellas and inside dining with TVs everywhere. There is nearby parking. I was shocked to discover that Roots had fresh-brewed sweet tea! I could not believe it and they got it right! If every restaurant fresh-brewed sweet tea, I guarantee more people in Indiana will like it! As for my wings, I went with the BBQ flavor and they were free with the Yelp check-in. They also made the wings extra wet like I like. Sometimes that is calculus to some places. The BBQ sauce was sweet and thick. The ranch seemed to be homemade as well. For my burger, I went with The Southern Pride. It came with tomato jam, bacon, and pimento cheese. Exceptional burger from a guy who knows all about Southern Pride! It came with seasoned fries that were a thicker variety. It came with a fry sauce which was very similar to honey mustard. Parking is tight, took us a while to find a spot (no dedicated spots for the restaurants) due to proximity to campus and parents weekend. I had the nashville hot burger and it was very good. I loved Scotty's and was interested in trying Roots. The facility is pretty large and clean. It has a nice sports feel if you want to watch done games. I like the wood interior and decor. I liked the chips...not much taste to the breading...but the dill flavor was strong and worked well with ranch dressing. For lunch I had the Amen single burger and cole slaw. The Cole slaw is very plain. The slaw was fresh and very light on mayo. Unfortunately the Cole slaw didn't have much taste. It was just there and I didn't finish it. The burger was good. The patty was small. The sandwich was built tall with a slightly buttery bun. The tallness made the burger hard to eat. The thinness of the patty just got lost in the tasty BBQ and pimento cheese. The BBQ sauce was minimal and gave the burger a slight kick - which I really liked. The pimento cheese gave the burger a cheesy zip which I also found remarkable. My wife had the Turkey bacon wrap and tots. She really like the freshness of the wrap. The tots were nice and crisp! The tots are a must try side or appetizer. Overall I liked Roots. First, the food was very good. The service, however, needs work. Like a lot of work. I'm not sure if anyone there was officially trained or not. I'm pretty sure there wasn't a manager on duty. The waitress did warn us they were short staffed. But our server only had two tables, including ours. Our service reflected as if she has 20 tables, not two. Waited about ten minutes to order drinks, and another ten minutes to get a draft beer. I had to go interrupt bartender in mid conversation with the host if I could please have my beer. "Yeah I'm getting to it" was the response. Don't think I'll be back. Please train your staff and have someone responsible be there to act as a manager. Oh, ambience was pretty cool. read more

This is our go to when visiting campus. I have had both the burgers and salads and everything I have ordered has been great. The burgers are smash style and are thicker than other places. If I am feeling really hungry, I go for the double. I have had and recommend both the Buffalo Chicken and Chef salads and the Truth Burger and Hoosier burger. A great American Burger Bar. Delicious choices. Great wings (two for one on Mondays). Popcorn while you wait. Good, local beer choices on tap (some we hadn't seen anywhere else) as well as old standards that you crave. The menu includes some really nice options that are not the usual fried choices. And the burgers!!! We enjoyed the The Mess. It lives up to it's name by dripping blue cheese sauce. We did two patties, and being Steak n Shake graduates, we were appreciate the smashed burger, but these patties weren't thin like that...Something different, but really nice. Great tots and sauce! The side salad was generous. I am looking forward to trying the pimento cheese options, the Roots burger and the chicken options (and I usually don't do chicken). My Muncie pal told me I needed to try this place (back in my day, this was a scotty's brewhouse) claiming they had some of the best food in Funcie. As a vegetarian, I appreciate that they had a homemade veggie burger that you can pick from. That always makes me like a place more! Great service (@Gabriel, thank you for being awesome) and bonus free popcorn when you first get seated. I don't know what that fry sauce is--but it's pretty good! Also, I thought that this place had amazing drink deals and an extensive drink menu to pick from. It's also walkable from Campus (right in the Village).
