Great place to get a burger and beer. Back area is great for families with young kids. It's cavernous, so sound reverberates throughout, and wait staff has a lot of ground to cover. The tables are seat yourself, and there are no waiters for food. The bartenders come to your table and take drink orders. It's a huge space with lots of seating and a large game room in the back. We came on a Saturday night, and there was plenty of seating left. They were out of tortilla chips. The chicken tacos were good, but the short rib tacos tasted unseasoned. I didn't eat the Reuben sandwich, but it looked a little thin on ingredients. I was told it was good, though (by someone I was with). The tacos were expensive ($9) since you only get two. They were only 6 inch tortillas, and they weren't overflowing with ingredients. I think I ate mine in 3 or 4 big bites. The beers were pretty average. I had the Flavor Clouds DIPA and tasted the Grit Lager. They tasted like your standard DIPA and lager. The flavor wasn't distinct at all. read more

Interesting place. Decor appear to suggest a hip hop, early 1990's MTV focus. There is spray paint (intentionality) on some walls and some interesting other decorative choices. Having said that, when I was there the clientele was mostly middle aged working class people. The bartender was friendly and attentive. He knew their beers, asked about my preferences, and made suggestions. The beer was very good as well. I did not try the food so I cannot comment on that. Overall, the theme of the brewery would not have been my choice, but it was not overpowering and I was comfortable there. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The beer was very good. I would certainly stop by again if I was in the area. Ps- they appear to have different events. Including drone racing through the bar. Really excellent time at Root Down. Went as location two on a date and was a fan. It was loud and boisterous on a Friday evening and it was popping - the bartenders were super friendly and even apologetic but it was busy and service moved as fast as they could. Nice, original list and good brews. The Red White & Blue and the Flying Guillotine were my personal faves but everything we tried was good. The music was loud but awesome - old school hip hop all night which was a trip. Food looked good but we had just eaten - next time for sure. Nice atmosphere and ambiance, really good stuff. And perhaps my wrath upon them is because: 1. they say you get a pound for $12 2. we got 6 3 and 3 split wings which to me is 3 wings whatever 3. then don't ever order their curry rub.... it's like celery salt on steroids 4. as usual the beer is great ... meets multiple taste buds but the wings were so bad and over priced that I have to worn the masses... 4 stars for the vibe, the friendly servers and of course, the beers. Hubs liked all of the beers he tried...and between him and my dad, they made a serious dent in the beer list. Thank god for us designated drivers. My parents split a panini, which they enjoyed. My deviled eggs were good, but the poutine? Oh lord. Seriously awful. I tried Root Down twice in the span of three days last week and am not even close to tired of it yet. My first visit was on a Sunday afternoon, and I took that opportunity to sample a few hoppy-but-not-too-high-on-alcohol varieties recommended by our server. The follow-up experience took place on Tuesday evening, and at that time I opted for a regular sixteen-ounce pour of "New Beginnings," a clean and tasty American pale ale. I liked all the beers I tasted over the course of my two visits, though I can't say any stand out in particular, and I already can't remember the cutesy names of any others besides the New Beginnings. I'm curious to try some of their higher-alcohol offerings but plan to save those for an occasion on which I am not driving. Service is extremely friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed, just as a brewery should be. Although Sunday afternoon brought in at least a few cyclists off the very nearby Schuylkill River Trail, I was surprised to find that the brewery was much more crowded on Tuesday. I'm not sure this is attributable to any particular craving for craft beer that the Phoenixville crowd develops on Tuesdays so much as the fact that neither Bluebird Distilling nor Crowded Castle are open then. (Your move, future Conshohocken Brewing outpost.) I haven't tried any food yet, but the tacos are high on my list, thanks largely to other Yelp reviews and my nosy staring as servers passed by our table with various plates for other patrons. (Incidentally, the food menu may be reason to choose Root Down over Crowded Castle for any outing calling for that.) All in all, a solid addition to Phoenixville's ever-expanding craft brew scene. Stopped in for the first time while in town last night. Hopping place around 3:45/4:00 which is a good sign. Packed bar but tables were open so we grabbed a seat. The staff was nice, helpful to get our beer but even though there is table service for beer there isn't table service for food. Not a big deal, just not sure why not. We tried 4 beers in a flight planning to get a second flight and try more of their options however after the first four we weren't excited to try any more and opted to close our tab and head home. My taste favors the bolder flavors of the other local breweries like Stickman, Hidden River and Tuned Up. read more

These guys are off to a really promising start. I would have never known they were in their second week of operation had the bartender not told me. Their beers are more expensive for flights than the other Phoenixville breweries. Their flights are served to you in 4 5 oz pours for $12. Presentation of the flights was good, served in a wooden holder with each beer you choose clearly marked. The bartenders were extremely attentive, informative, knew their beer, and were the friendliest of the staff I encountered at all the Phoenixville breweries. I didn't try any food, but would definitely do so in future visits. The Flying Guillotine and Flux were excellent IPAs, the Three Legged Rabbit a nice selection for those who like slightly bitter. read more

Went to the grand opening for some beers and again the next night to try some food. The sweet potato biscuits and guacamole were fabulous. Love the lime cider as well! Service was great except someone at the bar shut me down when I tried to ask a question about the beers. Maybe they were just too busy. Welcome to P'ville, Root Down! You were well worth the wait. They have been open a week and I have found a way to have 3 visits already. Last night, I actually had some grub, so it was time to write a review. First off, the space is ginormous and the artwork (can I call it graffiti when it is intentional and inside? Sure!) is phenomenal. Hostess just as you walk in to explain the process. Super friendly from the second you walk in. A lot of bar space (estimating 24 seats) with tables all around with a smaller counter parallel to the bar itself. You will find a place to park yourself on almost every visit. You order your food in the middle of the space, on the left side and they hand you a number and ask where you are sitting. Food comes out quick if the place is not slammed, but the busier it gets, your food may take 15 minutes to find its way to you, so plan accordingly. They have really come prepared regarding the staff. Plenty of friendly workers all around, ready to service you. That is huge. My wife had the pulled pork tacos and she enjoyed them very much. They come with salsa and a small side of guacamole too. It is the super whipped kind, but tons of flavor. Tacos are small, so I would suggest 2 orders if you are starving and want to leave full. Otherwise, perfect snack without overdoing it. I had the Hippie Picnic Panini (portobello mushroom caps, roasted red peppers, sauteed onion, pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo on ciabatta). I really liked this sandwich and for $10, it was well worth it. Again, not a monster sandwich, but I did not leave hungry. Came with a side of chips and a few pickle slices. For the beers, they have a nice variety. For the hopheads, they have an unfiltered IPA and a cleaner/crisper IPA, plus a lovely Pale Ale. If you like an everyday beer and are not too adventurous, try their Gioia (Farmhouse Ale) or Soul (Belgian Wit - think Allagash White). If you like Saisons, their Stay Gold is excellent. Like dark beer? Their new Cosmic Brownie (Choc. Milk Stout) is outstanding. They also have a couple unique ciders and wines from Stone & Key. Reasonably priced. Visited Friday, 09/08/2017, met up with my friend Chris Beerman (not his real last name) and tried all 16 beers via flights. The place was huge, with a pseudo-industrial feel to it, a gargantuan bar, huge area behind the bar with a lot of tables, and a huge area in the back with some pinball machines and video games. The clientele was a mishmash, but mostly professional types, as I saw very few rednecks or ham and eggers all evening. The beers were solid, with the IPAs standing out, and ranged from a solid hefe to an outstanding BA stout. The only food I had was the pretzel twists, and they were fresh, puffy, hot, and delicious, just like I prefer my women's nether regions. The mustard and spicy cheese dipping sauces were also delicious. The servers were great; very prompt, friendly, beer-savvy, and I immediately recognized several of them including former 7-year Craft Ale veteran Justin, a huge beer geek, home brewer, and friend to many in the area, except an MFer here and there. Oh well, you can't win 'em all. The restrooms were immaculate, which is a variable that often falls flat. Overall, this place made a great impression on Doc Lock, and that doesn't happen often. Beer and food is great but we were disappointed the last time we went in because we were told they didn't have any high chairs. Most craft beer drinkers in town are probably ages 25-40, the age at which many of us have young families. Every other brewery/restaurant in town has high chairs and kids menus, why can't RD accommodate young kids like Rec Room, Bistro, and others do? read more

My new favorite brewery in Phoenixville! Not a huge selection of beer, but the ones I have tried have been good- I especially like the cosmic brownie and 3 legged rabbit. The place is huge so it isn't hard to get a table unless you go on a First Friday. The graffiti all over the walls gives the place some color so it doesn't look like a boring old factory. But the highlight of the place for me is their tacos. For $6, you get 2 homemade pulled pork tacos, chips and a side of guacamole which pair perfectly with their beers....you can't beat that deal! The pecan bars for dessert are also top notch. The staff is super friendly and willing to help with anything. My husband and I have now become regulars and will bring friends here to try it too! read more

I love mostly everything about this place from the atmosphere to the service to the food. They have an amazing variety of vegan options. I would love to rate them five stars but unfortunately, as a beer focused establishment, there isn't a large enough variety of beer styles for me. While I can definitely taste that the beer is of high-quality, the menu is mostly IPAs & related beer types which are not my taste at all. They recently had a sour for a while that I was absolutely in love with. But I find the menu does not often stray from their tried & true offerings. If IPA is your go-to beer, there is nothing you should dislike about this place. I want to love them even more but I just need a little more variety to fit my taste! read more

The beer alone separates Root Down from the competition in Phoenixville. One word of caution their beers are more on the hoppy IPA side which is my particular choice but if you like lighter beers this may not be the best selection. The food has always been great although the ordering process is a bit different since you walk to the kitchen to place your order instead of table service.
