Been here twice already and enjoyed every experience! All the food we ordered was very well done-- no complaints. The only thing weird that we ordered recently off a special was the margarita cotton candy. In theory it sounded like a good idea, but the seasoning they put on top of the cotton candy didn't really go with the cotton candy itself. Tasted more like a strawberry flavored cotton candy with some spicy tangy seasoning on top, not in a good way though. Everything else was fantastic and we left with our bellies all full and happy. You need a reservation to sit at the bar. After my party showed up, we sat at our reserved table, ordered our drinks, then our food. (Limited liquor menu) The food showed up before the drinks, such a downer after a long work week. The lemon ricotta pizza was burned, literally black crust on the bottom. My other friend had the cod cake with capers and garlic, hugh bone in it, so gross and my other friend ordered an Amarrotto martini, it came with olives in it? Wtf! At one point, I had to go to the bar to order our drinks, the service was that bad! I only gave it 3 stars because it was so well decorated in there. Aside from the fact that my girlfriend & I just so happened to pick one of the busiest weekdays to have dinner (there was some sort of tasting going on in the back corner) - Roost delivered! However - we weren't too happy when the hostess told us she had zero tables available, but we were determined to not leave the place without a nosh. We wedged ourselves into the bar area, with one of us standing for a while, until another gentleman offered up his chair. (Chivalry is not dead!) We ordered the Hot Salami pizza, some hard ciders & light beers. Our bartender was knowledgeable & decently friendly. (PSA: Don't make comments about other people's facial jewelry. That's weird.) One of the cooks brought out a little 'sampler' of what our bartender called "Adult Mac & Cheese" - this was true (& delicious). I have a group of friends that try to get together for brunch on a monthly basis. They had been to Roost before but I had to miss out, so I was excited for a re-do. The inside of Roost is cool and modern, with lots and lots of seating, including a bar that appeared to wrap around the prep/kitchen area. It was bright and the wait staff were friendly and attentive, which was nice because our party kept shrinking and the staff remained kind and accommodating. I had a brunch cocktail and the breakfast pizza. In retrospect, the pizza could easily feed two. It had great flavor and a thin, crispy crust that was a delight. I ordered mine without the syrup, but if syrup on eggs is your thing, do you and live your best life. For two people, our bill was $60, which doesn't make me super eager to go back but if it was a "treat yo'self" kind of brunch that I was after, Roost would be it. read more

Service was below average and the restaurant could not handle a Sunday brunch properly...other people who got there after us was getting served first. When we asked we were given Excuses, not heard. The food took forever just about an hour or more and part of order that was specified was wrong and they had to take it back...we asked the front what was taking so long and nothing was done. They triedd to gIve is a third bottle oof champagne but we wanted to get out of there bc we were there plenty long so they took one bottle oFf the bill. Excellent stop on a Saturday afternoon! My husband & I wanted to stop somewhere for a drink and an appetizer or 2 so we decided to check out Roost. Plenty of parking on the street and there were spots in their lot open. Place is clean and trendy, good atmosphere! We sat at the bar, that is where we met Josh! What a great bartender! I tend to be a "high maintenance drinker" as I don't enjoy beer, wine or most hard liquors but I do love Gin. He asked if he could make me a special Gin cocktail so I said yes please! He whipped me up the most delicious Gin spritzer cocktail I have ever had. It had just the right amounts of Gin, lime juice and soda, I had to drink it slowly as it tasted that good! It was nice to have a bartender actually care if you enjoy the drink or not. Aside from the food, I would just come back to have Josh make me a drink! Now onto the appetizers that we stopped in for...since it was early afternoon they were still serving their Brunch menu, which consisted of several brick oven pizzas, soups/stews and a few entrees. I decided to go with the Mushroom Fontina Parmesan Fonduta pizza which was hands down one of the BEST pizzas I have ever had! I describe it as almost a cream of mushroom soup flavor on a thin crispy crust with yummy cheese sprinkled over the top - seriously if you are lucky enough to see this listed on the menu, order it, you will not be disappointed! My husband ordered the Waygu beef stew, which was a huge portion served in a huge bowl, full of beef and vegetables! It was definitely enough for 2 people to share. We made friends at the bar and we were told that the menu changes every 2 weeks so if you really love something you read about, you need to get there in a hurry! I am sitting in the restaurant right now writing this because I need to get it off my chest before I forget. Overall just simply not good food. The appetizers are barely any food for the price, literally costs $15 for a piece of toast that looks pretty. The lemon ricotta pizza seems to be a pretty consistent item here and would be pretty good if it wasn't for the literal whole slices of lemon on the pizza that just makes the entire thing taste like you're eating a lemon like an apple. Drinks were alright, the cucumber Collins was ok but was salty and didn't taste like alcohol at all. Only reason this gets 2 stars is because my friends seemed to like it so I might've just gotten unlucky and ordered the worst app, entree and drink on the menu. Service was great though. If you're looking for a trendy brunch, the roost will do you right. A friend of mine recommends this location after we both heard some pretty incredible reviews about it. Keep in mind, you may need to look at some google maps before you get there. If you miss the rooster decorations outside of this building, it will be hard to spot. It's in a warehouse looking building, with an interior loft look that makes you think you found a speakeasy. There's an unmarked parking lot on the left that you can use if you're feeling daring. We sat down and decided to look at their cocktail menu. For a location that brags about never starting brunch without a cocktail, I was kind of surprised there weren't more options. My girlfriend and I got a mimosa which we were kind of hoping would be fresher. The food however is where they dazzled. I saw several breakfast pizzas walk by me, so I knew what my mission was. I ordered a breakfast pizza (no dairy) which still came with sausage, egg, bacon, and a maple syrup drizzle over the crust. It. Was. Delicious. I requested a siracha drizzle, and it turned into a perfect sweet and spicy treat. We also split the yum yum noodles, thinking the pizza wouldn't be enough. And damn was it more than enough. We barely touched the noodle so this pizza can definitely be split. I'm keeping this spot at 4 stars because of the service. I would give this restaurant at most a 2 rating. This first issue is the entrance - from the side, forcing diners to get a lovely blast of the exhaust smells from cooking. Utterly unpleasant and a surprising start to our meal. the meal itself provided huge portions, for both appetizers and the mains. I would probably order one or the other, but not both. The appetizers, especially, are not well proportioned in relation to the other food. I had the veal ossobucco, which was again, at best, an average tasting meal at a 50$ price point. Others at our table had the pizza, which was over baked and had a surprisingly spicy sauce (beware!). The margharita, which is straight to prepare, was nothing like a proper margharita. Our other complaint is with our wait staff not knowing anything about the wine. Why curate an interesting collection of wine, if your staff can't speak to any of them? Or recommend a bottle? When your server opens with, "The items on the menu are short and not very descriptive. People always have questions, feel free to ask about anything". You wonder if that should be a clue to perhaps add more detail? I wasn't thrilled by our window table. The terrible glare of the setting sun wasn't balanced out by the view: railroad tracks and the sewage treatment plant. The food itself didn't thrill us. My wife like the Avocado Ceviche, but I was underwhelmed by half an avocado, sliced with a little corn relish ($14). The BBQ Octopus was charred out the outside (the suckers were carbonized) and tough on the inside. The agnolotti (read ravioli) and mac and cheese were fine, but I was left overwhelmed. We were ~$120 for four small plates, three cocktails, and one beer. We left hungry and thirsty. I'm not sure how it gets "$$" for the price. That price range, "$11 - $30" is what each item costs. And actually, only the smaller items, the ones described by the server as "large" are $28-36. So I guess you get out of here for "$11-30" by only having half an avocado and a beer. I had a visitor from out of the country and i wanted to show-off Buffalo's best restaurants and i thought of Roost.. i haven't tried their dinner before but i am so in love with the owner's previous resturant "Martin cooks" The concept of roost is amazing, they change the menu every 3 weeks and each menu has an inspiration Unfortunately for us, the new menu was pork heavy and we do not eat pork which limited our choices For appetizer we ordered the BBQ octopus; its grilled octopus on a cold potato salad and finger licking sauce.. the grill taste is so obvious and it was the best tasting potato salad until i found a hair in it, the waiter was very nice, he took away the plate and promised a dessert on the house For main courses we had: - Blackened catfish on cold black eyed peas and ancient grains salad: the three of us agreed on how good that fish was although i don't eat fish but i would definitely order it my self - Smoked Trout & Grits; the trout was boney heavy and not enjoyable to eat and was super cold (like fridge cold) topped with yummy sauce and all laying on creamy grits.. the waiter explained that the trout is cold but suppose to warm up by the sauce.. that was not accomplished - Ribeye with creamed corn and tarragon; it was beautifully sliced and placed on a wonderful creamy corn and tarragon oil/sauce that cut into the creaminess of the corn, but unfortunately my ribeye was rare although i ordered it medium.. the waiter took it to replace it and 10 min later i had no dish yet while my company finished their dinner.. i decided to cancel it for a reason: if the chef cut into it that means they can check if its cooked properly, and although it wasn't they decided to serve it which transmitted unprofessionalism of the kitchen My two stars are for the blackened catfish and the wonderful service read more

Visiting Buffalo this weekend and went to Roost with my brother, his wife and their (adult) children. The menu at this time focused on middle eastern flavors... and it was simply one of the best, most flavorful and well-prepared meals I've had. This is the kind of meal you're happy to go out and pay for... We shared a pizza to start. Then the three young adults each ordered their own entrees - kibbe, salmon and pizza. The older adults shared a whole roast chicken with tabbouleh and pickled vegetables, a sweet potato side, a charred eggplant side, and a salad. Wonderful! read more

After reading all the previous reviews , and hearing everyone in town RAVE about it, I was nothing short of dying to try the "new Martin Cooks." I'm so disappointed that my first experience did not live up to the hype. The positives: the staff was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is awesome, and it wasn't too loud in the restaurant. Parking was no problem. The negatives: I thought the food was exceedingly average. Martin Cooks was easily one of my favorite places in Buffalo, and I thought the food there was above and beyond. I started by sharing a few pizzas, which were just ok. I've had better flatbread pizza at other restaurants around the area. A friend ordered the mushroom toast, which had a great flavor and a huge portion. However, an important thing to note with Roost, they bring the food out as it's ready. My friends were literally done eating by the time my Korean short ribs came out. I was expecting a salt hit based on the nature of the dish but oh wow, this was borderline inedible. The meat was cold and tough, and the flavor missed the mark entirely. It was served with an Asian noodle, which was also salty and flavorless. I've had better Chinese takeout, to be frank. Not to mention, I had waited for my meal for about an hour and a half at that point, so I didn't even bother sending it back, as the rest of my table was done eating. I would definitely give Roost another chance, but I won't have my hopes up. I'm fairly envious of anyone here who got to enjoy the greatness that everyone in Buffalo is talking about, because that was just not my experience here. read more

Anything less than 5 stars just doesn't make sense. Everything about this place is amazing. Ambiance: unique and trendy without being unwelcoming. You can come in here wearing jeans and no one will judge you; although be prepared for fashionable patrons. There are lots of tables and seats at the bar but chances are everything will be full. Stake out a place at the bar in the hopes you can swoop in and grab a couple chairs. Drinks: lots of options for wine and cocktails. I did not check out the beer list. The wine was excellent, the cocktails were good - not the best; we have some really great cocktail bars in Buffalo and this may not be my #1. Service: extremely friendly. Willing to chat if you are but also willing to step back and let you enjoy your friends' company. Food: delicious! The menu is a bit limited but don't let that deter you. The pizza is amazing. So far I've only tried the beef tartar appetizer and the sausage pizza. Both were great. I definitely want to return to try more pizzas. I am usually super laid back but last few times I went here I put tedious conditions on my orders and asked for obscure drinks. They made my Boulevardier and The Vancouver flawlessly without question or even batting an eye. That gets 3+ stars right off the bat. My harissa short rib was sensational and i asked for it extra spicy and that the chef should use his judgment on how to get it spicy - no limit to the spice. It came out with a second kind of sauce or oil with the harissa that simply reeked of chili. Bright and hot. It was totally dope. Loved the enormous potato chip garnish. Got a pizza made to order - pepperoni and anchovy. They just nailed it even though not on the menu. Love the white anchovy. Everyone acted like these were ordinary requests and did everything in a very timely and friendly way, although it was busy both times I've been there recently and sat at the crowded bar. We came for Saturday Brunch after hearing from likeminded folk that the food here is excellent but interior and service are bad. We were fans of Martin Cooks, so we had high expectations for at least the food. Roost is nowhere near as good as Martin Cooks. The building is poorly marked, with no signage at the entry. It's not clear how you're supposed to enter aside from a 3" handwritten sticker on the small window of a steel door. The interior is tacky AF, design is all over the place, not cohesive, with exceptionally cheap and cheesy touches: glass hurricanes filled with neon feathers and organza (really?); lighting fixtures that do not match; etc. It looks like it was decorated from a picked over TJ Maxx Homegoods. Let's be honest--it probably was. Also, it is extremely loud here. Our server was rude and clearly lacked experience. He was inattentive, unpolished and responded rudely to perfectly reasonable requests. Then there's the food: A few people at our table ordered the same dish--asparagus, quinoa, poached egg--and barely touched it; said it was overly salty, not balanced, everything tasted the same in the dish. Although I love pizza, a breakfast pizza typically isn't my 'go to' for a brunch dish, but ohhhh myyyyyy this breakfast pizza is AMAZING. We've ordered it as one of our items or at least to share for the table each time, because I just can't not order it. I want to try other items of course too and I would say my other favorite dish that I've had is the shrimp n grits. Again, SO good. Honestly, nothing I've had here has been even just 'okay' so I think you're good with whatever you go for! I will say, portions are fairly large and definitely shareable. When I'm just eating with my boyfriend we will typically pick a rotating dish (the menu changes somewhat frequently) and then get the breakfast pizza. We definitely can not eat all of this though and end up taking home a lot of the pizza for later - it warms up great in the oven! Prices seem a little steep at first glance, but with the portion sizes + quality and tastiness, to me they are fair. [DRINKS -5] I've had a few of their brunch cocktails + coffee and everything has been very good. They also have a pretty decent selection of wine and champagne. [ATMOSPHERE - 5] So fun in here! With all of the windows, sunlight floods in. The brightness and eclectic decor, really creates a neat setting inside. [SERVICE - 5] Another outstanding aspect. Everyone inside is super friendly and makes you feel very welcome. The menu is ever changing so I typically always ask the waiter for recommendations/suggestions and they are also more than willing to provide thoughts. Last time I was there, I came with 6 people on a Sunday afternoon during peak brunch hours, which required a decent wait for our table. Within 10 minutes we were given a complementary glass of champagne while we waited, which I think shows the level of customer service they provide. We were seated earlier than expected, but even if we weren't, there is a great bar area / common area space that you can hang at and grabs some drinks while you wait. NOTES* - Brunch is pretty popular so it can get very busy on the weekends. Brunch reservations are only for parties of 8 or more. - Parking is a bit odd. There is a small lot next door, but it's very small. Other than that there is parking on the street. We got the halibut crudo which was light, fresh and absolutely delicious. For dinner we shared the pumpkin gnocchi and the acorn squash. Both entrees were perfection. Probably the best gnocchi I've ever had as they melted in your mouth. Service was great at the bar even though it was very busy. Honestly, do not have one bad thing to say about this place. I was a big fan of Martin's previous restaurant (Martin Cooks), and was really looking forward to trying out Roost. I am very happy I did... but also, disappointed enough that I doubt I would be back. I mean, I wouldn't choose it again. If someone else decided to make plans there, I would join them... there just isn't the 'pull' to get back for me. My biggest issues - parking isn't good (and I imagine it's awful if there is recent snow plowed). It's 'cross your fingers and hope there is a spot on the street'. Preferably on the same side as the restaurant, because crossing a 4 lane street that people speed through, at night, after drinks, isn't a great idea. The restaurant is LOUD. Hard to talk at your table loud. Hard to NOT eavesdrop on everyone else's conversation loud. I am all for the idea of 'family style' or bringing out the food when it's ready (not waiting for everything to come out all at once). BUT, if that's the plan, shouldn't the food be fairly easily sharable? The pizzas share fantastically... but the other dishes... not so much. Further to that - we ordered 2 pizzas, a Porchetta, and Proscuitto wrapped Monkfish (for 4 people). The pizzas and the Monkfish came out approximately at the same time.... and the Porchetta came out 10 MINUTES AFTER WE HAD EATEN ALL THE FOOD ON THE TABLE. This simply should not happen... and maybe calls for a menu change. Lastly, we ordered 3 of the 4 specialty cocktails of the night. What were they? I don't recall... I only know I would never order any of them again. None were particularly flavorful or tasty. There's my gripes, and the reason only 3 stars. Now, to be fair, they will likely change up the menu and the cocktails often. The food was very good - just not 'eat for 15 minutes, and then wait 10 more minutes for the other thing you ordered' good. The service was excellent. The décor and style is wonderful. The menu at Roost changes about every four weeks (based on seasonal offerings.) Most dishes on the dinner menu are either large or decadent enough to share. While it is truly difficult to pick a favorite dish, I hope some will find the following descriptions from the latest menu useful: Course I Salmon Crudo: Pristine slices of Sushi-grade salmon slightly cured in salt and a drizzle of grapefruit juice, decorated with chives, then garnished with beet puree, and a sour cream-horseradish puree. Chef smokes the puck of custard (caviar crown and all) inside of a glass dome. The plate arrives, and POOF! The dome is lifted as wood-smoke comes billowing out, leaving a beautifully plated dish that is as elegant as it is savory. $18 *Paired this with Chardonnay- Hayes Ranch, California. Course III Duck Duck Goose - 1/2 Long Island duck breast with a lavender, schezwan, peppercorn, coriander, and fennel seed spice rub. The duck confit is rolled in a yukon potato wrap which is sous-vide and seared. Yummm. (Talk to me) Goose: foie gras terrine studded with figs, almonds, and cranberries. Easily the best meal I've ever had, coupled with great service and atmosphere!!! We did family style because we were forewarned that meals come out upon completion, not necessarily all together. It was an Italian themed brunch menu (menu changes every few weeks). We ordered porchetta with fig and a fried egg. It was served with blue and white potatoes. Next was bolognese, which I didn't eat..but was told is good. Last, the cauliflower pizza...a subtle saltiness added a unique and delicious taste with the lentils and arugula. Nice drink menu with unique cocktails. One disappointment, they were out of amaretto...a key ingredient to their canolli drink special! We ended up ordering a spicy salami pizza to go for my husband....delicious as well with grated hot peppers. Another unique factor..the location butts up to a train track. Super cool, fun place! If you are like me and enjoy cooking and watching the Food Network - then this is your place to go. The menu items are clearly well thought out and executed by true chefs. The restaurant itself is super cute, with an open kitchen layout and an insanely impressive pizza oven. We stopped here for brunch. Their menu seems to change frequently and doesn't provide extreme details - just enough so you know what's in the meal. We ordered the breakfast pizza and a toast dish that contained homemade sausage patty, squash, carrots, brussels sprouts and a fried egg. The breakfast pizza was very good. The size was a lot bigger than I anticipated. The potatoes on the pizza were similar style to scalloped potatoes, which I thought was different than a lot of breakfast pizzas. The wood fired pizza oven makes pure magic pizzas. As for the toast, we had no idea what to expect. This was one of the menu items that was relatively vague (and there were no photos to reference to on Yelp). This plate was colorful and beautiful! I give creativity a 10 out of 10! There was a squash puree on the bottom (which was by far the best squash I've had), topped with brussels sprouts and carrots, followed with the "toast", homemade sausage patty and fried egg on top. When I say "toast", I mean mashed potatoes perfectly formed to look like a thick slice of texas toast, with the edges crisped like the crust of the bread. I truly thought this was a legitimate slice of toast and purposely avoided it because I have a thing about soggy bread. When the dish was almost gone, I asked my boyfriend if he was going to eat the toast. He was like "What toast? That's potatoes". I tried it and it sure was potatoes. I was extremely impressed by this and it fit the dish perfectly! I will say that parking can be somewhat difficult given it is on Niagara Street. I dined here for the very first time this past weekend for my husbands birthday. As wife of the year, I decided to make reservations the day of his birthday! I got super lucky and Roost had availability for an 8:30pm reservation that evening. There was abundant on-street parking available. I loved the industrial feel of the restaurant with exposed piping, open kitchen and other details in the tables and metal chairs. I was a little grossed out by the sticky table tops but we were assured that it was simply the varnish used for the table. The layout was more geared towards larger group dinners with only a couple smaller tables available. The view out of the back looks over the rail and the I-190 which is where we were seated. They could easily spruce this up a bit by planting some flowers to add some interest and beauty. The server was very helpful with her recommendations and informed us that they change their menu regularly. They recently started their "Italian Spring" menu and the food did not disappoint. The Bolognese has fresh cut meat and was a must try, I really loved the pappardelle with fiddleheads pasta bowl which ihad a great fresh spring taste to it. One of the best meals I've had in Buffalo in years. Im mad it took us so long to go. Fried mozzarella with fig, ricotta, and balsamic was absurdly good. Like, put your fork down and shake your head good. Pasta with fresh tomato sauce was also spectacular. Peaches with biscuits and whipped cream was just the cherry on top. Service was outstanding. Very loud over an hour wait parking not convenient at all .Prices extremely high for what they serve. Order came separate from my friends like 25 min later. The owner was so unprofessional was too busy flirting with the ladies next to us to even apologize for our food being served 25 min apart and his bragging was a little bit much. it was pretty good pretty much a yuppie bar restaurant I don't even know what the word is for these people today maybe it's not yucky that's a long time ago so call it hipster or whatever the current generation knows it was very loud and not really a place you go to to have a conversation with somebody but it seemed to be jumping happening and everybody in there seem to be having a good time so maybe I'm just too freaking cold to go on a place like that no I'm not old enough for Salvatore's Italian gardens but still someplace with an ambience where you can socialize without shouting above the noise would be great. read more
