ROM's is a lifesaver! We were starting a 5 hour drive to Santa Barbara when we realized our air conditioner was broken. With 2 kids on a hot day, this would have been an excruciating drive. We were nearing Gilroy so we decided to try getting it repaired there. We called four mechanics, but they were either closed or booked. In desperation we tried an Auto Parts store in hopes we could replace the Freon. He mentioned he can't help us, but suggested Rom. Sure enough, Rom worked us in almost immediately. Turns out it was a relay, and he just happened to have a used one that fit our car! While we hope we never have an emergency like this again, if we do I sure hope we find someone like Rom! read more

I walked into ROM's, looking for a local repair shop. One because I would prefer to support small business, and two I wanted something close in proximity to where I live. I was given an estimate for repair cost parts and labor. Their labor cost as one of the most reasonable, at $95 an hour. They also told me they would inform me if there were any changes or discoveries additional work needed. I was having my oil pan replaced due to a puncture. They were able to take my car earlier than expected. I was given an approximate week, wait time for the parts. They were able to get the part earlier, which meant I would get my car earlier. What a win - win situation. My car was done to days earlier than, the second day of delivery estimated. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody looking for a reliable repair shop. read more

No one's going to think that I was influenced by others. I am totally disappointed with"Rom's" ethics. We were recommended to go here by a friend. On Friday we took my car in. I handed him my car keys and explained the issue. Within the hour he called me to explain the issues. So far so good. He had to install a new radiator, thermostat and gasket and fix the transmission hoses. Cost quoted over the phone, $500. I had no idea if this was a good price or not. On advisement, I was told this was o.k.. So I told him o.k.. He informed me that he would have to order the part. By Monday the car was ready. No problem there. He even didn't have a problem with my picking up the car on Friday, as I do not live in the area. Definitely not a problem there. So when I picked up my car, the cost was $550. I didn't approve this amount. Problem 2 (Problem #1 below). I could of course argue this, but my cohert advised that I didn't need to get the written estimate because it was a friend of a friend. I knew better. On the Inspection Invoice he has the parts listed as $266 and labor as $190. But then you can see he changed the labor to $260.72. If he found something additional or decided he wanted to charge more for labor, he should have picked up the phone and called me like he did the first time. I think that increasing the price like this is unethical. Before the increased cost, he wouldn't relinquish my car to me. He didn't recognize me. I said I'm the one who gave you the keys and my name is on the vehicle registration. Problem # 1. She had to turn around and come back to show her face. AMAZING! After paying, he had me wait in the rain for about 8 minutes before someone brought my car out. Problem #3 I probably would have been a lot more rude to the guy, but he knows that we are friends with his longstanding customer. read more

DO NOT TRUST THESE SHADY PEOPLE!!!! I took my car in to get the starter replaced. They did that, but as soon as I got my car back the check engine light was on. It has never been on before. They didn't mention it over the phone when I talked to them or in person when I picked up my car. I called them after I got home and the lady in the office kind of stalled and said "Oh yeah, we can check it for you for $95.00. I got the code checked for FREE at an auto part store. Horrible customer service!! Just horrible! I absolutely dislike writing bad reviews, but this one takes the cake! My husband had had repairs done here in the past on one of his vehicles so he suggested we re-visit. We had a vehicle sitting for several months that needed repair. My husband and I called to ask if they were available to execute the repair. We were told it would be no problem so we moved forward. We had our vehicle towed over. Mind you, the car was to be repaired for my teenage daughter to drive. Soon after, my husband received a call from Raul asking for the "real story" and wanted "answers." In short, my husband called me saying that Raul claimed the car had fire extinguisher residue in the engine compartments and that it had been on fire at one point. When I received the call from my husband I was completely confused and of course wanted to know what the deal was and how that was even possible if the car had been parked in the garage where we reside in a gated community. Not possible! Moving on: I of course call this place wanting answers. The guy was super rude and very accusatory. Really??? I drive down there with my cousin, ask the man to show me what the problem was? He shows me the battery and says it has a short and someone was "messing with it." (Meanwhile all I can smell is the alcohol coming from his breath!) First, the towing company put jumpers on the car, it was never "messed with." Second issue: Shows me white film on the bottom of the car practically on the floor, nowhere near the engine. I asked him "where's the fire, show me?" His response: "How would I know, I wasn't there?" (Conversation in Spanish btw) I then asked him for his profession opinion? How would I know!! At that point there was no sense in continuing a conversation with someone who was drunk, didn't know what he was talking about, was completely accusatory and totally RUDE! Wow!! Before I left he insisted that he was inconvenienced by the multiple calls from my husband and I and that he didn't run his business that way "too many calls" which were 2 from each of us. I made sure I asked him if we owed him something for the calls and asked him if there was a fee for the inspection? His response: "no, we didn't do any inspections!!" Unbelievable!!!!!! Roms is a FIND!!! He diagnosed a hard to find emissions problem that the dealer ( Bob Lynch Ford) couldn't find - indeed, the dealers service manager gave me the hard sell for a new motor!!!! And another repair shop on 5th St insisted that the rough idle was 'normal for 6 cylinder engines' - that might be true for a v-6 but a straight 6 is inherently balanced - any gearhead worth his salt knows that! I kept looking, and asking around - on a recommendation of a retired county sheriff I tried Roms - WOW! Like the previous reviewer said, don't be put off by the looks - it's as messy as my garage (which the car never sees), but his mechanics hustle!! He only accepts cash & credit cards, but the total bill for a rebuilt head & labor was waay less than I expected! read more

I was looking for a place to bring my car and so I asked someone I knew would know where to get the best service cheap. He recommended Roms and I pulled in and was a little sketched but the guy with the gnarly scar was really friendly laughing and joking. They did a timing belt on my car with water pump ect for just about $500. My friend got the same repair done at a different shop on almost identical cars for $900+ the repair came with a warranty and I've never had an issue with them or the work they've done. I almost never post reviews, but I had to write about this place. I've been living in Gilroy for 10 years and have struggled to find an honest/good mechanic. Especially one that won't price gouge or make you feel like an idiot because you're a woman. THIS is that place. I've been going to them for a year now, and they never fail to impress. The entire staff is incredibly friendly. Girl at the front will help translate (if you need translating to Spanish/English), and their prices are affordable compared to other mechanics in town. I used to "go shopping" for a mechanic anytime my car needed maintenance or had an issue. I don't even bother with that anymore because Rom's is always the most affordable. This place does tend to be pretty slammed on most days, but for good reason: They know what they're doing! Walk ins are welcome, but I suggest making an appointment, if you can. They treat my car like it's their own car, so I always drive off feeling confident that my car was 100% properly maintained. I also appreciate the honesty. I walked in yesterday, almost 100% positive I needed new spark plugs because I just got a new battery. Turned out I had a faulty battery, and my spark plugs were/are still in great condition. The battery was still under warranty, so it was replaced for free and I wasn't charged for labor either. I've been to other places that would've replaced my spark plugs anyway, AND charged me for a new battery because how else would I know, right?! Not at Rom's. They're out to make life-long relationships with their customers, and I am here for it. read more

Called Rom's when my husband (who works in Gilroy) experiences car troubles on his way to work. I called and spoke with Rom who said to bring it by whenever. My husband did so later in the day and it ended up being a couple hour wait (this is fine, I don't expect other customers to be dropped or moved behind me). But what was a little irritating to me was that the gentleman told my husband that if nothing came up on the diagnostic that he would not be able to give us an answer and we would have to take it elsewhere.--This is what ended up happening. Don't be put off by the look of the building, this is, hands down, the best auto shop in the greater SF bay area. They are fast and friendly and my entire family has never had an issue with the quality of their work in the decade we have used them for all our needs. My only comment is that they are busy and you'll need to call them for your status updates, they will take a bit to call you back as they are focused on getting the cars done. When our old auto shop went downhill after new ownership, and we started to feel like we were getting ripped off and they were missing things and milking us. We searched yelp to choose another and decided on Rom's. We were not disappointed! We called and he managed to squeeze us in THAT day, even though they are very busy. I have taken several cars there to be repaired, and I have never had a problem, and thought they were quick, good, and reasonable. I have even recommended them to friends. But I brought my truck in because the engine light came on, and they said it was the rotor cap, and they straightened it out. Then, two weeks later, the engine light comes on, and the engine breaks down. Now, the truck needs a new engine. We had it towed up to San Jose where the owner and mechanic thinks they are responsible for the damage to the engine. I don't know what to think because I'm not a mechanic. Now, so far, it has cost us 3.500.00. I just seems to me to be too much of a coincidence that it happened so soon after they worked on it. Very unhappy that I took my vehicle here. After reading all the reviews here , I decided to take my vehicle to Roms. My vehicle still had the same problem after Raul repaired it. The original parts were replaced to solve the problem . but the problem was not solved. I will NOT go here again. My problem was not solved...as well as my original parts were replaced. Considering that we lived in Santa Cruz and quite a ways away from home, we had to be rescued. But first thing Monday morning the took care of us and were on our way back. I hadn't taken a car to Roms because even though I live in Gilroy I work in Salinas and now started taking my car to a coworker who also happens to have his own shop just down the street from where I work. Well after getting a price quote to replace rear brake pads I decided to take my car to Roms to see how much they would charge to do work. Well not only was he going to charge about $50 less to do work, the mechanic found that the pads were still 80% good and really just needed a good cleaning because there was so much dust/dirt buildup. From now on I will never take my vehicles to any one else other then Raul/Roms auto. read more

On Wednesday, Sept. 22, at about 6 pm, my car broke down outside Gilroy on a trip down to Monterey. The car started chugging, and then finally just died. I had visions of having to have it trucked to San Francisco for repairs, but the tow truck driver recommended Rom's. I am very glad he did. Rom's is open generally until 8 or 9 in the evening. Rom's, located on Monterey Avenue just northwest of the 101, is a 30- year auto business which is a classic garage -- it is not fancy, it is far from immaculate, does not have mood music, nor a designer waiting room. Rom's has parts and tool bins everywhere, and comprises a quarter block. It also has a great mechanic who can repair all makes of cars. You can tell that the owner loves to work on cars. He gives a year warranty on his work. My car's chugging and break down was quickly diagnosed as a bad fuel pump, and an OEM pump was ordered that night. The car was ready as promised the next day. All the problems have been resolved. We met many locals in the Monterey area who stated their cars have been repaired at Rom's, and he is the person to go to with problems other mechanics cannot resolve. He apparently is recognized as a trouble shooter by local dealers. If we were not more than 100 miles away, we would use him exclusively. read more

I needed to get my check engine light fixed before making a road trip. I checked Yelp for a decently-rated auto shop in the area and this one caught me eye. The stars are all worth it. I was able to bring my car in immediately and retrieve it very quickly. Turns out the thermostat needed replacement and all I was charged for was labor! Very cheap, but very good quality job. My husband and I were in the process of moving from San Jose to Gilroy. We were making lots of trips down the corridor with loads. One day going from San Jose to Gilroy as I got closer my air conditioner and my power steering went out. I was able to make it to our house here in Gilroy. When I got here I looked online to find a mechanic really close to my house. I eventually decided to go to ROMs after speaking to Raul on the phone and he think he know what was wrong. I took him my car late that afternoon. He had to order the part and the next day he was successful in fixing my car!!!! He is so friendly and just one honest guy. His price was amazing as well. Thank you Raul for going above and beyond! My son was on his way to San Francisco for school from San Diego when his car broke down. He was towed to Rom's at around 5:30 pm. Raul greeted my son on arrival. Learning of his situation he took the time so close to closing to review the car and told him that if it were possible, he would try to have it fixed for him that night which is usually unheard of. If that were not enough he offered to get him a ride to a near by hotel if it were a more serious problem. Raul, knowing that there was a worried mother involved took the time after reviewing the car and after closing to call me and explain the situation. He explained that he had a daughter away at school and he understood. I was so grateful to him for this. If I lived in Gilroy or close by this would be my shop. It doesn't get better than this. I agree with the other reviewers that the ambience is not the greatest. They did a great job replacing both electric fuel pumps on my 15 year old F150. They went out of their way to replace only what was required, not simply swapping out the complete assembly like a dealer would. In the end the truck runs great and he saved me a lot of money.
