Larry does a great job and is fair and honest. Repair pricing is on par with most shops. They also meet or exceed time commitments.

I looked around a long time before finally finding a mechanic who is honest, knowledgeable enough to work on my eclectic collection of cars! I have referred many friends to this shop and they have all thanked for it later! read more

The transmission gasket leak was successfully repaired. Larry provided exceptional customer service, scheduling the appointment promptly and completing the work ahead of schedule. We received a timely update on the vehicle's status, and Vanderford's competitive pricing made the repair process both convenient and affordable. I am a widow whose husband used to fix my car and knew how to "deal" with mechanics. I was going to another place and every time they would change my oil, they would have a list of things I needed that would cost hundreds of dollars. I did small things, like change air filters myself. However the past few months, the front desk guys who would explain things and help me with ways to reduce costs were gone I didn't feel I could trust them anymore. This place reeks of trust and reasonable prices. Larry just fixed things that the other place was going to charge over $50 more and inspected the breaks and told me they have about 20K miles left on them. I am so glad Yelp exists, because reading the reviews helped me know this place is the kind of mechanic that does what needs to be done at a reasonable price and does not try to convince me into having work done that is not yet needed. This place makes gives customers trust and craftsmanship. So glad others in Gilroy helped me find Vanderford's Auto Repair. read more

Larry is def someone you can trust & is a straight shooter. It's business, no funny games of "..you need this & this & this....." He estimates a cost & time & is accurate and on point in his work. I will go back & recommend him to fam & friends. read more

The best price in town..I had other "Auto Repair" places quote me hundreds more.Larry was fair and polite. The kind of garage you want to bring your vehicle to to get fixed.Old school, small town, grease monkey love at its best. GIve them business ..they deserve it! read more

This is the only place I have taken any of my cars for the past 10 or so years. My aunt takes all of her cars here and so do my parents. I trust Larry with any and all of my cars needs. He does fast work at reasonable prices. read more

Wow. Walked in with a referral from a friend. Talked to Larry and told him I have my mothers 1985 Nissan Maxima and that it needed a rack and pinion replaced because it was leaking a the sector gear adjuster. He said 85? I don't want the job. I asked him if he had any one that he could refer me to and he said No. ? Wow read more

I called with a problem on my Honda Civic, and spoke with Larry on a Friday. I dropped my car off the following Monday morning for a diagnostic evaluation. Larry called one hour after drop off with the diagnostic report and his recommended plan of action. I approved, and my car was ready Monday afternoon. He kept my car overnight to drive and test just to make sure everything was correct and running properly, and I picked up my car on Tuesday morning. I was blown away by the professionalism, timeframe on the work that was performed, and price. It was a pleasure speaking with Larry, and my car is running better than it has in years. I highly recommend going here, as they are honest and do quality work. read more

Wow. I don't even know where to begin with how great my experience was here! Best mechanic in Gilroy! What a professional, ethical, trustworthy business to take your car to! Fast, efficient service done excellent by a pro! So here's my story: I took my car to a local dealership for leaking coolant. They said there was water in my engine and quoted me $7,000.00 for a new engine. So figured I should get a 2nd opinion, just in case. I told Larry my issues with the dealership and he didn't mention a single bad thing about them. He just said, "let me take a look and see what I can find." I even opened myself up and told him, "I love this car and I'm not buying a new one. I'll pay the $7K if i really need a new engine." He totally could have taken advantage of me right there. But he didn't. I got a call the next day and he told me he couldn't find any water in the oil... so no new engine needed!!!!! He fixed my car for so much less, I asked him if there was anything else he wanted to do or charge me for and he just said, "nope, just get your oil changed again in 3,000 miles!" WOW!!! What a guy!! I've been driving it for weeks now with NO problems and my trusty ol' car is doing great!! THANK YOU, LARRY!!! UPDATE!!!! Nearly 2 years later and my car still runs GREAT!!!! NO issues; I just get the oil changed every 3K miles. Larry is the best in town! read more

Larry is the friendliest, most honest guy. He does a great job & does it in a reasonable amount of time. Prices are reasonable & I always feel confident my car will be running well & that I won't get ripped off. read more

Larry, the owner, is a stand up guy. He's not going to sugar coat anything. If you don't need it, he will let you know. I recently took my truck in for some costly repairs, and he quoted me a price over the phone. Not only was his quote much lower than other mechanics in the area...when the work was done, he came in less than his quote! I will start using Vanderford's as my new mechanic. Oil Changes were a bit pricey...but where are they not anymore? Thanks Larry and your crew for your outstanding work and goodluck on your next 30 years in beautiful downtown Gilroy. read more

For years I've gone to the dealer for maintenance on my Prius. Why, I'm asking myself now -- why didn't I come to Vanderford's sooner? After having trouble getting into the dealer (!) I called Larry Vanderford and he asked if I could come in within the hour. My car was done within 2 hours. Larry quoted me $90 for the repair but he was wrong. The bill was $54. He could have charged me the full $90 that he estimated and I wouldn't have blinked but he explained that he was able to find a part for less money. So he charged me accordingly. Integrity as well as fast, friendly service. Can't recommend this place highly enough. read more

Clean shop, excellent service, couldn't ask for anything better. Pricing was more then fair. Highly recommend.

Reviewing Vanderfords again!! Larry is as honest as they come, a true gentleman! He could've really charged us more but told us that some of the things the dealership told us to do weren't necessary. He finished the job promptly as usual, kept in touch with us as usual and beat the dealers estimate by a landslide. We have a baby on the way so we appreciate the cost savings. He will have our business for life and we will refer everyone to him. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like Larry around!! read more

There are lots of horror stories about auto repair places but not at Vanderford's. They have kept my 96 Ford Tahoe alive long after others said to scrap it. Always honest and if uncertain, Larry lets me know. My daughter's Taurus was seen by 3 different shops and not one could help. Larry saw the problem almost instantly. Vanderford's is a really nice surprise in a world where you can rarely trust or count on people to provide honest service for a fair price. read more

My daughter was returning to college this morning. As she stopped for coffee Gilroy, she noticed a fluid leak. Too far from home and too far from school, we checked on line to find some help. Thank you Karlita & Yelp! I called Larry and told her I was sending my daughter over to him. As soon as she arrived he put her car on the rack and checked things out. Fortunately it was not a major problem and he sent her on her way without charge. In today's world, this kind of service, not to mention - general humanity! - is extremely hard to find. I wish Larry were closer to us. He would add another customer to his happy list. You are fortunate if you do live close! read more

Great place. Larry is super cool and knows his stuff. It's hard to find a trusting mechanic and I trust his shop 100%.

If you want to get scoffed at for asking if your car can sit in the empty lot until there's time to look at it in a few days, this is the place for you. He could have at least make up some story about insurance not allowing it or something. I went to Rom's about a tenth of a mile over and was greeted with open arms. read more

We were first time visitors to Larry. We will definitely be back for future auto repair. Larry was very helpful and reasonable. Work was done as estimated and on time. Thank you Larry! read more

I will absolutely never go back. My father used to own one of the only music stores in Downtown Gilroy. For 10 or 15 years, my father got his cars repaired at Vanderford's Auto Repair. My father sent me and countless others there. (My sister witnessed my father recommending Vanderford's to many customers over the years while working in the music store). Years later, I decided to go back. After he repaired my car, I gave him a check from my credit card company. It was one of those cash advance checks from a major bank. I didn't have the credit card with me because I was waiting for a new card--the original had been lost. The owner would not take my check. He said it was not a real check. He would not let me take my car to my house to get another form of payment. I had to walk 5 blocks carrying a heavy book bag, my purse and my 13 year-old dog. I am serious. He asked me why I couldn't call my Dad. Hello, I am almost 40. I have never had anyone treat me like a common criminal before this. He acted like I was trying to pass a bad check. What a complete ASSHAT. I told my sister and she could not believe the treatment I had received from VANDERFORD'S AUTO after all the business my father had sent his way over the years. read more

i was very disappointed with the service for the simple fact that they did not do what they told me they were going to do. i told them what work had been done to my 2004 astro van and that it kept flashing a po 300 trouble code which is a random cylinder miss fire he told me that they had to take all the inside of the van apart which would take at least 30 to 40 minutes to take apart and reassemble! well they call me the next day and said that my van was ready and that they found that cylinder number 2 was oil fouled so they replaced it and that they test drove my van and that the check engine light was off and that it was good to go so i went to pick up my van paid him $179.00 and some change. so i took my van for a test drive and after about a 6 mile drive the check engine light came back on and my van started missing again ! i then called him back he told me to bring it back so i did he told me he was going to check cylinder number 2 again and if he found it to be oil fouled again that my van probably had bad valve guides or that the piston rings were bad. so he told me to park the van that it was to hot work on at the moment that he would work on it in the morning he called me the next day and told me that cylinder number 2 was oil fouled again and that i should replace the engine because it had too many miles on it! well my van only has 150.000 miles on it and still runs strong it just had that miss fire and the check engine light on so i went to pick up my van and i felt like i was being mislead so i took it to the Chevrolet dealer here in Glory they charged me $250.00 to dissemble and to reassemble it and to run a diagnostic test on it they call me the next day and told they had found the problem they told me that it had a bad spark plug in cylinder number 2 and the distributor cap had a crack in it and that's"s what was causing all the problems!!! so they charged me $24.00 for the distributor cap and $10.00 for the spark plug for a total of $284.00 but those $284.00 were well worth it because my van is running like a champ again!!!!!! i will never take my van or any of my vesicles or even recommend any of my family, friends, or anyone to vanderford's ever!!!!!!!!!! i wouldn't even give them one star but i have to give them one star just so that could post this!!!!!!!!!!!! read more
