This place is spacious, clean, diverse seating options, lots of natural light, digital menu screens, and not bad food options either. Romeo's is a new-ish cafe done right. The interior is spacious, attractive, modern, comfortable, and is kept in top condition. The people who work there are friendly and helpful with sunny dispositions. Coffee, whether just-made drip or Italian specialities, is quite good, as are the pastries. And the sandwiches and salads. Romeo's has pretty much whatever you may need. They call your name when your order is ready, so there is no need to stand around. Rock music is the norm, but it has been turnd down upon request. This cafe is a good study den, a social living room, or a reading/Internet retreat. Parking is easy on Dwight Way before or after Telegraph and on Telegraph itself on the block South of Dwight Way. I've worked out of here a few times throughout the years to get out of my mundane apartment and oddly enough the thing that sticks out to me the most is their avocado toast. I'm not one to seek out avocado toast, but I was hungry and needed a little somethin' and their toast fit the bill. It was surprisingly delicious and I remember going home and trying to replicate what I'd had there! Their range of sugary and caffeinated dessert drinks makes for a unique and interesting menu. I'd say everything I've had there is pretty solid and refreshing. Though I can't speak to their coffees. Wifi is strong and service is decent. I think COVID precautions could be a little better. I got the "O mint where art thou" drink, which is like the Philz mint mojito - so if you're visiting the Berkeley campus and don't want to walk or bus down College to the closest Philz, this is a good substitute! They give you a Hershey's kiss with drink purchases, which is a nice touch. Otherwise, it's a great place to work (lots of outlets) with a variety of seating. It gets busy but if you come in the morning, you'll definitely find a place to camp out. Not 100% kid friendly because of the names of some of their menu items, but would still recommend it over many of the other south side Berkeley cafés if you need a place to work because of the plugs, lighting, and size of space. read more

This is a really good spot to study. Plenty of seating, as well as charging outlets so you don't run out of power. The coffee is pretty good, though a bit overpriced in my opinion. I've witnessed the owner pressuring someone to buy something while studying there. I LOVE this cafe. They have massive tables for a great study spot and the most delicious coffee. Their mint coffee reminds me of Philz mint mojito but this one is better! This is a coffee place that's very close to the UC Berkeley campus, and it's a good place to study if you're able to find seating there! The coffee shop is pretty small, and it's usually decently crowded there so it can be hard to find seating for multiple people. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the modern layout and aesthetic that they had inside as it was bright and welcoming with nice visuals on the walls! The baristas there were nice and helpful, and since it was my first time there they gave good suggestions for what I might like. For the drinks, just be warned that they are very, very sweet. It definitely was one of the sweetest coffees that I've ever had, with tons of whipped cream, chocolate, etc. in each coffee. The names of the drinks are pretty funny, and give the place a unique touch to it. For my drink, they were even able to add a cookie on top of it, which I haven't really seen done at any other coffee shop. The drink was super sugary and I was a bit jittery afterwards, but it was very tasty and refreshing! They're not enforcing social distancing or mask regulations for customers at all. Really really uncomfortable and unsafe experience that I can't encourage during these times. (To their credit, staff is wearing masks) Visited a few weeks ago during COVID in September (before counties in the Bay started allowing indoor dining) and they were letting multiple groups of people sit and stay at tables inside without doors or windows open. After my group ordered and were waiting off to the side, one dude walked in without a mask and was standing super close to my group and the staff didn't mention anything about this. No "hey put a mask on please" or anything - I think from how they interacted that they knew the guy personally, which kind of made it worse. read more

I just want to preface this by saying that I am normally very understanding of customer service, but my experience here was unacceptable. I was in Berkeley for a funeral and the only public restroom around was absolutely destroyed due to police activity in the area. So naturally, I make this an opportunity to support a local business in exchange for use of their bathroom. I paid for two drinks and politely asked if I could use their restroom. They said it was closed, but I was desperate so I asked again if I could please use it since there was literally no public restroom. The manager/owner was extremely rude and said "For future reference, the bathroom is closed 45 minutes before the store closes." (I actually want to remind everyone that if your dining room is open, it is illegal to close your restroom to patrons.) I said "I'm sorry, I'm a transplant I don't know anything" and he completely ignored me. I was finally able to use the restroom after my friend asked again for me. It's not a big deal at all to allow one person to use your restroom after they spend 12 dollars on drinks, especially given the neighborhood doesn't have any public restrooms. It was a bit sweet, but it hit the spot and I will go back to try the others! Environment/Vibe: A I just really liked their layout and vibe. It was super chill and everything about it, especially during COVID times was kind of what I needed to make it feel like a hangout/home. Also one of the few places that allows indoor seating. Been a customer here for the last two years and occasionally, I would enter here to study for tests or get work done. The ambiance is nice, and the drinks are ok, but a bit expensive. The workers are nice too, never had a rude experience prior to today. My only complaint is an incident I had recently where I was studying here once again but this time I had an outside drink. I planned on finishing it and buying another one, but shortly after sitting down and doing some work, the owner came up to me and told me I had to be a customer in order to be here. Whenever I come here I would typically buy a some sort of beverage, either a coffee or smoothie, to support the shop, but the one time I didn't, I was asked to leave. I do understand their right to only allow customers inside, as well as not allowing outside drinks, but to call me out in front of the other customers was extremely embarrassing. He did seem to be polite about it, but a bit snarky in a sense, and was loud when informing me. I apologized, threw out my drink, and bought an oatmilk aphrodisiac, which I'd rate a solid 7.6/10. Prior to the experience I had recently, I would've rated this a GENEROUS 3/5. Probably won't come here again. If you're looking for a nice place to study WITHOUT having to purchase a mediocre overpriced $8 drink, then I'd recommend Philz Coffee on College Ave or even the Peet's across the street. Do better Romeo. Also as I was writing this review, a girl who came in was sitting across from me and seemed to literally be napping and had purchased no drink. This place never disappoints me! Ive been here several times already for their delicious coffee concoctions. I completely love the decor. Its very modern, sleek, and clean... makimg me feel good every time I walk in. We are always greeted right away by the friendly staff. The barista is so helpful! She helps me narrow down my choices every time and she nails the drinks! I love the strong coffee taste without being too bitter or too sweet (if you get what I mean). When I want something hot, I get the wicked ways. Then I get the Love Potion #9 when I want an iced drink. I believe you can get it blended as well, which is another great option! Its cute how they give you kisses with your order. It makes your visit that much more memorable because no other place does that. This is one of my favorite coffee shops! read more

I needed a cup of coffee for my drive back to SoCal but didn't want to go to the normal chains like Starbucks or Peets. I love going to more local or smaller chain coffee shops. To minimize choice I just asked for a cup of their house coffee iced ( ~$4.50 ). It came in a relatively large hot to go cup ( even though it was iced ). They asked if I wanted it black, with creamer, and sugar. I said sure as I was going to ask for that anyways. Each cup of coffee came with a chocolate kiss which I thought was SUPER CUTE. It was also a nice sweet treat. As for the coffee the price with the amount of coffee is really worth it. However I felt that they put too much creamer and sugar for my coffee. I felt like I was drinking milk with a hint of coffee. Either that or I'm used to drinking really strong coffee. I guess I should have asked to put less sugar and creamer to fit my liking. I normally like my coffee darker with less creamer and sugar to really get the flavor of the coffee. My mom who's not much of a dark coffee drinker thought it tasted fine. So maybe it is me. This was my first time At Romeo's coffee I saw the sign on the sidewalk and came in to see what the hype was. I stared at the menu for a while. I have to admit that this block of Telegraph Avenue makes me a bit wistful now as my old college after-class hangout, Caffe Mediterraneum, closed this past year, and next door, this newish coffee spot took over the space that was the Shakespeare & Co. bookstore on the corner. I used to live on College Avenue near Dwight Way during those puppy years, so I rounded the corner onto Telegraph every day on my way to campus. Now all I recognize is Moe's Books across the street (review: http://bit.ly/2FSy0fr). So it was with some trepidation that Jamie W. and I entered this ever-so-contemporary coffee spot. Its literary name was clearly meant to evoke its former identity. But Romeo o Romeo...wherefore art thou, Romeo? The menu listed all the standard caffeine selections but also a slate of Romeo's Hot Potions perhaps catering to the incoming undergrads still getting used to their coffee legs. Jamie bit and ordered the abruptly dubbed Scandalous!!!!! ($5 for a 16-oz cup) which mixes espresso with dulce de leche and cookie butter and drizzles it all with chocolate (photo: http://bit.ly/2pySAqb). Struck me as something you'd order in an ice cream parlor, and my one sip made my lips pucker from the sweetness. Even though it came with a chocolate kiss, it was gratefully not as sweet as Jamie's, but it became clear to me that sweetening up their caffeine was this shop's selling proposition to the bubble tea crowd. I loved the industrial and spacious atmosphere, as well as the comfortable chairs and tables, perfect for getting some work done. The one barista was incredibly friendly. I had the "Redemption", a caramel blended drink topped with a mountain of whipped cream. It was deliciously sweet! For 16 oz, $5 is very reasonable (similar to Starbucks price). I am writing a review of the cafe owner. I am a Berkeley student, and I happen to be a Jew. I was visiting the cafe for the 1st time, and was unfamiliar with the menu. I did not see anything I liked, so I proceeded to leave, and go check out another place next door. That's legal to not order anything, right? Before I could leave, the owner, who is very big, bald, and muscular, confronted me. He said very loudly, literally: "What the fuck is wrong with you? You come into my shop and don't fucking order anything?!!! What are you, you some fucking Jew?!!" I was shocked and surprised. I tried to ask him what was wrong. He just kept yelling at me, and said "Oh, you wanna fight? Come here, and I will fucking beat your ass, you fucking Jew! Don't compromise my fucking business!!" He threatened to assault me, right in front of all the customers. I was not trying to fight anybody. I was just trying to leave the shop. Needless to say, I will NOT be going back there, and I will tell ALL my friends to Not patronize this business. I just came to check out this shop. I did Not expect to be physically threatened. The owner obviously has a lot of anger problems, and is very racist. He did not have to call me a Fucking Jew, and threaten to beat me. I was actually scared, and considered calling the police, but I did not have my phone! Needless to say, this ruined my day. I have been living in California for 12 years, and have never been threatened by a coffee shop owner, or a bar or restaurant owner just because I am trying to leave. The owner is super kind, and he definitely keeps a good eye on this place. It's very easy for businesses to become "trashed" on Telegraph, in the sense that it becomes unkempt and feels dirty. This coffee shop feels clean, and it's spacious. I love the modern but lax feel to it, and the chairs are super comfy! (5/5 for the ambiance) I got the latte, and mine had too much milk/foam on top.
