It was raining and…read morecold and we didn't want to wait in line outside of Tracey's and a local suggested we come here. The place was pretty empty and got seats right away. Order the chowder and 1 pound of the king crab legs. The chowder I heard was supposed to be the best but found it less than satisfying. There was very little seafood almost none but a few pieces. The soup was thickened with a lot of corn starch and tasted like it. Let's move on to the best crab I've tasted in a long time. Huge but the meat was a bit shriveled. Succulent, briny and delicious. Wished we ordered more but at 110.00 per pound was a hefty lunch. Definitely worth the crab.

I'm so happy we found it, a refuge in rainy Juneau. We were greeted immediately and seated by a really nice staff. They have a nice, easy to read menu with lots of good seafood options. She loved it and couldn't finish the good-sized portion. I highly recommend Twisted Fish Company for really good service, warm and inviting atmosphere and wonderful eats.

It was peak lunch time and the advice from the cruise was apt in that it wasn't difficult to get a table. Between both buildings, they do have plenty of seating, which is a mix of bar sitting and high-top tables. I really do like the vibe of the building as it does have that relaxed, pub feel. Definitely better than waiting in line elsewhere. Of course, we did try some food and the king crab. Just opted for one pound and that was more than we needed to get our fix. It was succulent and delicious and if you are like us where you just want to try it, 1 pound for 2 people is just fine given the price ($99 a pound(!), which is cheaper than the more touristy places). We topped it off with a side of the delicious fries (Beer Cheese Hop Salt Fries) and a few pints, it made for quite the perfect afternoon in Juneau. So if you are looking to get in your King Crab fix and not break the bank, while also finding a place a bit more relaxed, highly recommend the Alaskan Brewing Public House.

These tasty bites reminded me of homemade hamburger patties with their uneven edges cracking under each bit. Again. Good stuff. On my last visit, I tried the famous loaded tater tots. Now let me warn you, share with someone or you will be full for hours. The tots were a plate full of deep fried goodness covered in chili and all everything you would find on nachos. So good, but again, sharing is caring. They had also had a bloody mary morning drink, but I got there after 3 and the bartender still made me one. And it's good to be there when the fishermen come back, just be prepared to get a taxi home because someone is always ringing the bell!

The ship was the epitome of modern luxury and the port cities catered to all the tourists needs. But at some point, I needed to get a little down and dirty, to get away from the crowds of visitors. To me, Alaska is still frontier, and I needed to experience just a taste of it. From the recommendation of a grizzled cruise staff, my wife & I found ourselves at the Alaskan Hotel and Bar, enjoying a pint and taking in small piece of history. While a few tourists did wander in, most of the patrons seemed local and knew each other and the staff. We watched from the far end of the bar and soaked in the atmosphere while enjoying our beers. Though there was a single acoustic guitarist playing from the stage, the bar was mostly still and quiet, a welcome respite from the throngs of outsiders on the street, veering in and out of the jewelry stores and tacky souvenir shops. Both of us needed this time to recharge, to enjoy a different side of Alaska than we'd seen, to be around normal people again. Does this bar have all the amenities? Are fancy cocktails the standard fair? Is the furniture new? All those answers are no. But the drinks are strong and the bathrooms are clean. And for a tired tourist, this is the most welcome sight.
