(To me, Italian sparkling water is more tame and hurts less when you drink it.) We had the absolute BEST experience at Roma from start to finish. Basically, treated us like family in such a quaint, romantic restaurant, and the vibe, is beyond stellar. This is a great Italian restaurant. It located at the edge of Rice Village on University, in a building that at one time must have been a someone's home. It has a rustic atmosphere with a large patio for dining alfresco. We came early and were seated immediately. In beginning it took a little while get service, but our server explained that they just changed their wine menu. The server knew the menu very well and helped us on our selections. I order the sea bass and my husband ordered the veal shank. The shank came with polenta and green beans and sea bass came in a sala verde type sauce at the bottom and thinly sliced red and green peppers as garnish. The were both delicious and portions were generous. We ordered the octopus appetizer which was very nicely prepared. They have a good selection of wines by bottles and by the glass. Roma is a cute, quaint little restaurant. We were the only ones in the restaurant the entire time, and the employees were extremely polite and pleasant. The food was decent. As a starter, they give you bread with an olive oil dipping sauce. I don't usually like olives, but the bread with olives was delicious as well as the dipping sauce. I did note that the bread was not warm, which was disappointing. We ordered the meatballs as an appetizer. The sauce was amazing, but I could tell they used frozen meatballs as they were significantly cooler than the sauce. The smoked gnocchi was a no-go for me. The shrimp was decent in the dish, but the gnocchi was less than pleasing. The fettuccine alla bolognese and squid ink infused fettuccine were both pretty good. All-in-all, the dining experience was decent, but I wouldn't come back for a second visit. read more

We came as a family after having several business dinners here. The veal was overcooked, the carbonara was under seasoned and grainy, the arancini was cold inside, and the server never told us the specials or offered pepper or Parm for the pasta dishes we ordered. It was just fine, but especially disappointing after having a few good experiences. I will say the desserts were good and the homemade limoncello was delicious. My dine out experience was much better than my dine in experience. Not sure because we were the last customer (came in at 9pm and they close at 10pm). Bread was cold, meatballs and lasagna came out room temperature. After they heated it up again, the meatballs were good and they added fresh basil. Wonder why they didn't do that in the first place. Bolognese is good, but the lasagna was such a let down. Seems like they rushed it, only waited for the cheese to melt on top and served it to us. Service was okay, staff is is nice, but didn't really check up on us, even though we were the only table sitting inside. I came here to celebrate my birthday today, the is honestly some of the best Italian food I have tasted. Here's my opinion on the food: The ricotta and spinach ravioli with truffle and sausage was AMAZING!!!! The plate was so flavorful and the texture of the ravioli was perfect. The spaghetti carbonara was pretty good, but it's not the best one I've tried. It was very creamy and the ham was very flavorful, however, I expected more from a restaurant whose name is Roma. Lastly, the cannoli was the cherry on top. I really enjoyed the chocolate chips inside. The reason why I'm giving this place 3 stars is not because of the food. It is because I left with a feeling that I was not getting the same service as the rest of the customers. When we arrived, the hostess asked if we had a reservation, but we didn't. She then proceeded to say that there might be some space outside (it was empty outside). So i asked if she could give us a table inside instead, then she said "Yes, I guess I can make some space for you guys". You guess? I mean, we are here to buy food, you're not doing me any favors (there was clearly available tables inside). Also, I noticed that the table next to me got offered fresh grounded pepper, but we didn't. I understand that the servers want to get their tips, but they really should not discriminate like that. I left with a happy stomach, but pretty bummed because I didn't feel like I was welcomed into the place on my own birthday. Outdoor seating is always a plus in this climate. The food is well made traditional Italian. The service is on the slower side but the owner makes it feel like a comfortable compromise, he stops by to make sure everything is going smoothly. I've been here 3 times and sadly my last two visits have been awful. First visit - amazing service, food, etc. Everything was perfect. I thought "wow I found a great Italian restaurant with a beautiful outside dining setting" Second visit - worst service I've ever had in my life at any restaurant. No bread was put on the table until I was almost done with my meal. The martinis that were ordered shortly after sitting down came out AFTER the food. They were also almost undrinkable they were so bad. They had the balls to still charge for them even though they came out after the meal. No apologies from them for anything. The food itself was still great so I thought "I'll give this place another try" Third and final visit - they've revised the menu removing things like the flatbread pizzas. Service was better but still had to ask them to bring bread (this is an Italian restaurant - what is wrong with you people?). Calamari had more artichoke pieces than seafood. I've given this place enough chances and now I'm done. I much prefer Rivas in Montrose. It's not fine dining but the atmosphere is really cool, prices are great and service is super attentive. read more

I feel like this is a great midweek date spot with your SO. The location is convenient, reasonable prices, casual, but definitely a great ambiance for relaxed one on one wine-aided conversation (full bar too); but also has some areas for groups. Not sure if I'd enjoy it as much if it were crowded, however, as it is a little cozy, but the patio is nice and relatively spacious. The service was great and timely. Unfortunately I showed up a little late, about 30 min before closing, but they were very cordial and didn't make me feel rushed at all. I had the smoked gnocchi, and while it was cooked perfectly, I just personally wasn't into the sauce (maybe I'm just not refined haha) and I thought it was really rich. I ended up trading with my friend for her squid ink pasta and we both enjoyed each other's meals much more than our initial choices. Definitely want to try other items we saw that looked good. Overall great solid low key spot to have a date or catch up with friends over good food and then stroll around the village but I'm not sure if I'd want to go there on a packed night. Food here is pretty good. I've been here twice and I've gotten the bolognese and the spinach ravioli. I'd give the bolognese a 3.5 but the ravioli is a 5. We did finish the pasta as stated above but the cost of the dish comes mainly from the seafood that's in the pasta and the waitress took off half of the mussels and brought them back to the kitchen to show the cooks. Glad you took photos after the fact when half of the seafood was removed due to it not being edible. Mind you we still tipped 20% and the valet. I understand it's not anyone's fault but the way this whole thing was handled was not good or professional. I sat on this review for a long while, and now after a month of trying a multitude of other HRW restaurants, I can say that this one was my least favorite. I can't really point my finger at anything specific other than the food just being mediocre and the parking being cumbersome at best. That said, the service was good and friendly and the venue small and cozy, which unfortunately also made it very loud. We ordered the Mozarella in Carroza and Caprese salad as an appetizer and the Cotolette di Pollo and Salmone con Cavolo Rosso as an entree. The appetizers were OK, but nothing out of the ordinary and the same goes for the entrees. Italians never mix cold food with warm food, so when you mix a warm chicken cutlet with a cold salad on the same plate it seems like an afterthought. The salmon while a generous portion left a bit to be desired in the flavor department. The food was fine but really nothing out of the ordinary and certainly nothing that would make me want to rush back. My first visit to aroma was very pleasurable. I went on Valentines Day. They had a fixed menu that came with an appetizer, entree and dessert. I enjoyed the intimate setting and the menu selections for the evening. The salmon is very delicious. Be prepared to hunt for parking. My ossobucco was delicious. My friend had the seafood soup and was very disappointed. The shrimp were overcooked and rubbery, the calms were few and some didn't open up. He said it was bland and he was given a teaspoon instead of a soup spoon. The service was very bad-understaffed would be my guess as the dining room was full. The bad part was when the check came. We had asked before we ordered for separate checks(there were 4 of us) and our server said that was ok. When the check arrived, it was NOT separate checks. He took it back and a different person brought it back and told us to write what we had on the back of the ticket. I did so, and put each person' type of credit card and last 4 numbers next to their order. He took and came back (frazzled) demanding we total each so he could know how much to charge to each card. We did so, unfortunately not including the tax.....so the last card he rang up had the total tax for the whole bill. When we told him, he threw his hands up and said his machine rang it up that way and he couldn't change it and stormed off. Did I mention that when he brought the individual tickets the second time, he threw them on the table! Very poor customer service and rude behavior considering we had initially asked for separate checks....which would have prevented this fiasco which ruined the meal for me. Was planning on returning to try the squid ink pasta with seafood; but probably won't. Oh, and btw, the picture of this on Yelp shows the dish with calamari which was not included in it when I asked the server what seafood it contained. My wife and I chose Roma for our Valentine's Day meal this year for a couple of reasons, not the least of which was the Yelp promotion offering a free glass of Prosecco. The restaurant, a recent re-invention of the much heralded Sud Italia, is located in Rice Village and takes the form of a rustic-looking house on a quiet street, complete with mirrors, black-and-white photos, and ceiling fans. The atmosphere is quaint but classy, perfect for a date night. At least so we thought before we stepped over the threshold and detected an aRoma reminiscent of damp, musty wood. Thankfully, the scent tapered off as we walked further into the room, but it wasn't the finest first impression. The restaurant had re-opened just a month or so before following some renovations, and perhaps there was some residual water damage or maybe it had rained recently, so I wouldn't put too much stock in this one detail anyway. The meal went fairly smoothly otherwise. The service was attentive and the wine was good. We started with the Fried Shrimp and Calamari with marinara and artichoke dips. The bite-sized pieces came scatted on a newspaper aside a grilled lime. The shrimp were plump and sweet, the squid well-seasoned and crunchy. The real source of my lukewarm appraisal, however, were our entrees, which we found disappointingly mediocre. My wife ordered the Bucatini alla Amatriciana, a creamy-and-savory preparation of thin, hollow pasta with a light tomato sauce and cured pork. It sounded amazing on paper but the flavors of the dish didn't quite wow us, although it was decent. I ordered the Veal Scaloppini with Prosciutto, which was the least inspiring course of the evening. The thin veal cutlets were chewy and tough, and the white wine sauce was far too mild; the portion was miniscule as well given the $24 price tag. In fact, the grilled artichoke was the star of the dish. Visiting a restaurant in its first month or two of operation -- before it has had a chance to work out any kinks -- is never a good idea, so take this all with a grain of salt. We will plan to give Roma a second try for comparison soon. read more

A rebranding of Sud Italia. They have made the spot a little brighter, and little more casual, but essentially much the same. Always love the outdoor area with a small dinning room and small bar in a great house. Service is spot on. They are always accommodating. Started out with the Mediterranean Octopus Salad. This is phenomenal. With plenty of fresh octopus, amazing olives, and yams. At Sud Italia the squid ink pasta was always my go to, and a version of that is still on the menu. Though I decided to change it up and go with the spinach and ricotta cheese ravioli. With mushrooms and Italian sausage. The pasta here is always cooked perfectly. There are plenty of wine options with a full bar as well. I would like a few happy hour options of wine by the glass. Not a real big deal though. All in all this continues to be one of my favorite Italian spots in Houston, and a great spot for the Rice Village area. read more

PHENOMENAL! Went there because it was date night and we needed a new place to try. Feeling Italian I turned to Yelp and Open table for some guidance. This place was In incredible proximity and also fairly priced as far as upscale Italian restaurants go. We got there are we immediately seated (we did have a reservation and noticed that half of the restaurant also had reservation signs on the tables). The restaurant atmosphere is very posh and clean in appearance. Our waiter was Mossimo and he is phenomenal! Very sweet and very very knowledgeable! Please hear me now, take his suggestions! He suggested a bottle of wine that was on the pricey side, but it was phenomenal! I'm not a wine snob or anything and I will go as far as to say I wouldn't know a $1,000 bottle of wine from a $50 bottle, but I would have been upset if I had missed out on this wine! It was the best red blend I have ever had! They came out with the bread after the appetizer so I didn't try this, but have heard the great reviews on it! We ordered the rice balls, which were good, I just didn't eat much because I was not in the mood for something fried, like my boyfriend was. We're going to try the burrata the next time we go! I ordered the fettuccine bolognese and my boyfriend ordered the shrimp gnocchi in a Smokey Safran sauce. BOTH WERE AMAZING!! I wish my noodles had been a bit thicker, but this is just a personal preference, but the sauce was phenomenal! My boyfriends was also very very delicious! Very Smokey and rich! And the best part is you can tell it is fresh potato gnocchi and fresh fettuccine pasta! You can't beat fresh pasta. Then for dessert we had the truffles and tiramisu. I tried both and I would have to go with the tiramisu. The truffles are nice, but I think once you've had a truffle all of them are pretty much the same. Really regretting not getting the Apple crostini dessert. The table next to us got one and it looked delicious! Will be coming back again, hopefully to the point that we become regulars.
