Never again. This morning I encountered the rudest person in New York City working at this place. I was trying to figure out a bagel order for a group, and he was so nasty that he refused to wait on me. I'm sorry I didn't know Bagel Corner is also owned by the same people. I was about to spend between 15 and 25 dollars at least once a week. Instead, I'm taking my business elsewhere. Would like the owner to know you lost out on at least $135 a month. I have been going to this shop for a few years now and they do have some great bagels. It's a very busy store so make sure you know what you want before you get online in order to keep the line moving. If you are in the neighborhood, I strongly recommend visiting the store. This unassuming, no-nonsense corner bagel shop is making chewy, flavorful New York bagels. They are not the best of the best in terms of crackly crust, but they are the genuine article. Furthermore, the staff are friendly. There are a couple of downsides to this place. One is that, when they're busy, the staff can be overstretched and make mistakes. Make sure you state your order clearly, and double-check it as they're putting your bagels into the bag. Another thing that could be improved is that their cream cheese is a bit too sweet for me, and I think they put on way too much. A good bagel needs a swipe, not a block, of cream cheese. The air pot coffee was nothing special, but they have a menu of espresso drinks - if you're particular about your coffee, I would suggest trying those. read more

The food here is delicious!!! I really enjoyed my bagel with the cheese omelette. Only complaint is that it was 6 dollars each, while I could get two from any other deli around here for the same price. Of course they charge more since you can sit and eat, but I don't think it was drastically better than an egg and cheese bagel from the local delis. Still enjoyed it though! The baked goods are amazing!!! The crumb cake was so moist and delicious! I had been debating whether or not to get it the entire time I was eating my bagel and I am so happy I did! The chocolate chip muffin was also delicious! They also had lots of coffee options. The iced coffee was pretty good. I would definitely come back here, but probably would just get plain butter or cream cheese instead of the egg. Or just come for the baked goods! Has a nice atmosphere and lots of seating! read more

I usually prefer this place to Bagel Corner. My recent visit was not good. The place is filthy. I don't think they routinely wipe off their tables as every table had debris. I asked for a bagel with lox, onion and butter on the side. The lox was okay but the big disappointment here was the bagel. I was there at 8:30am and they gave me a rock hard bagel. How did the bagel get so hard? If I wasn't in a hurry I would have mentioned it but I will next time. The people who work there move very fast. Probably too fast for their own good. What I did like is they got my order correct. They didn't mind giving the butter on the side. However, in addition to the bagel not being fresh the butter was hard. Maybe a couple of staff arrived late. This would have been a much better experience if my bagel wasn't as hard as a rock. Staff were courteous. read more

Enjoyable place- we keep coming back and getting egg and cheese bagels and freshly squeezed orange juice. Allow for some preparation time. The food is quite good with the exception of the muffins- a bit dry. We recently moved to the area so I cannot compare to what it was before with the prior keener; however, I do think for the area it is decently priced and like I mentioned, food is good! Recommend you try it. Keep in mind the hours of operation- place is actually closed for Shabbat but opened on days such as July 5th when most of the other brunch places near by are still closed. read more

I think I wrote one other bad review, but this has got to be one of the worst services I ever had... 1st, no one seems to be moving fast enough; like almost purposely slow. 2nd, after I sit and have my order (bagel was decent and coffee was actually good), I see the guy putting chairs up to clean, so I ask him what time they close. He tells me 4pm, but it's 3:20pm. He proceeds to start sweeping TOWARD ME. I couldn't believe it, so much I thought it was a joke; I actually started laughing. Guess what? He kept going! Came here on a Sunday morning and got a plain bagel with lox spread. The lox to cream cheese ratio was a bit sparse compared to other lox spreads I've had but it was still decent. It had a glossy thick crust and a chewy inside. The bagel was a bit too chewy for my liking. It's the kind of bagel that might make your jaw sore by the time you're done with it, but the taste was good. I think the same people own Bagel Corner, and I prefer the bagels over there. read more

The staff just condescendingly complained that I was cheap for tipping $1 for an order to go. "Those who pay the least cry the most", he said under his breath in spanish, thinking I would not understand. All this while smiling. I speak read and write a Spanish, English and French. I had a lox on a salt bagel yesterday with a bottle of Kombucha. Cost $16! While good, was overpriced.

Here is what I recommend you try: the everything bagels, the scallion cream cheese, the lox cream cheese, and the chocolate-chocolate-chip yogurt-based muffins. I am not sure if they make the muffins on site, but wherever they're from, they're pretty fresh. Also, the iced coffee can't be beat. Their coffee, iced and hot, seems to be pretty popular among customers. Remember, bring cash. Currently, Rolen's hours are 6-4 M, T, W, Th, and 6-3 Friday and Sunday (but call to confirm before you go). Go in the morning if you want the freshest bagels. Maybe it's good that they're not open later in the afternoon, because the bagels might start to get a little crunchy. There's really no reason to withhold a star from this place. I am getting used to places being only-cash. Also, if you trek over to this place on Saturday just to find it closed, you might be upset, but come on, you can't fault them for being Kosher. Also, you could just go up a few blocks to Bagel Corner, owned by the same people. Bagel Corner is also Kosher, but not under the supervision of a rabbi. There's a refrigerated case along one wall which contains various milks and juices for purchase (i.e., Nesquik, Snapple). I think I have also seen them sell warm soups from crock pots? They have every type of bagel imaginable, and pretty much every type of spread you would need. They also sell their cream cheese by the pound for reasonable prices. Their cream cheese is a bit sweeter than the cream cheese I've found at most bagel shops. It's also a lot creamier. Yum. I don't know how they make it, but they're doing a great jeorghb by me. Knowing that I needed to feed my fellow coresidents for an early morning basic science presentation, I ordered 2 dozen bagels from Rolen. I called them a few days before, made the order, had to pay in advance. The bagels were ready at 7 AM sharp, and I ended up getting 2 baker's dozen bagels! The time it took from stepping out of my car, picking up the bagels, and then getting back into my car took less than a few minutes! They were fresh out of the oven and hot and steamy, and still warm by the time I arrived for my presentation. My residents kept complimenting how fresh, soft, and warm the bagels were. I ordered 2 lbs of cream cheese - one regular, one with chives. The total came out to be a little over $45, which wasn't too bad. If you want the bagels to be packed in a platter I believe its $10 more. I was very satisfied with my purchase and bagels, and I will definitely be coming back to order more Rolen bagels for any future meetings! read more

Great bagels and good coffee but the service is consistently awful. I live across the street, so I go here frequently for convenience, but have more recently been going to other places strictly due to the service. I have been here 25+ times over the past few years, and these issues happen almost every time. Here are a few examples of what I mean as to not make an unsubstantiated claim. - On many occasions, I have given my order while an employee walks away toward the back or to help someone else. This results in them either messing up the order or having me repeat it several times. - When there is any sort of a line, the employees help the next person before finishing your order which makes it extremely disorderly and usually results in them not bagging your items, or you having to remind them about a part they have forgotten (but charged for). -Carelessly put together your order, on two occasions they have spilled a ton of coffee in the paper bag only for it to rip on the way out or in my building lobby. There are several employees who are very kind and seem to care about service, but it is overall very unorganized and flustered. The best word I can use to describe the service is CARELESS. Things like asking for a large coffee and they give you a small simply because they are not paying attention, or not toasting bagels that you asked to be toasted because they are waiting to serve the next customer. The bagels are really good, but they mess up on simple requests frequently. read more

This place has the most outrageous, offensive sign up saying that they have to raise prices because New York is raising its minimum wage. It's on top of the counter, behind which the employees--who are being paid this wage--have to work. Tell you what, Rolen Bagels, if the folks behind your counter will be earning a living wage, enough to buy their kids breakfast or pay medical bills (because I know you aren't trying to offer them health insurance), I'll pay an extra 25 cents for a bagel. Fine to grab a bagel, but nothing special. Bagels don't taste exceptionally wonderful, but they are fine. Have never had anything there except the bagels. Place isn't open a lot, it's never that crowded, at least when I go, & the staff seems nice enough but not overly friendly. $2.10 for a bagel toasted with cream cheese. While they're not worth making the trip from another neighborhood, the bagels here are good. That said, about a month ago, as I do at least weekly, I ordered a bagel with scallion cream cheese. When I was about halfway through my bagel (I was eating at one of their tables), the man working behind the counter approaches me and informs me that the other cashier had only charged me for regular cream cheese and that I owed them roughly 30 cents, which I promptly paid. While I have no doubt that the man was right, the fact that he thought it was preferable to inform me of his business' mistake and collect on his negligible debt instead of writing it off speaks volumes about Rolen Bagels. read more
