I always see Dr. Hyatt at RPV. His professionalism and thoroughness never disappoint. Today I had to accept an appointment with "Dr." Scheff which I now regret. His demeaner was aloof and he seemed quite disinterested in providing me with the services I was requesting. I will not be seeing him again. Perhaps a career change to something that does not involve human interaction would be better suited for him. Certainly "optometrist" is not a good fit. read more

Caveat Emptor - BUYER BEWARE I had an exam and purchased glasses here. The day I picked my glasses up I told them I couldn't see - I was seeing triple. They suggested I wear them for awhile. I have worn glasses for 50+ years, wearing them for a month didn't change anything. When I returned for a second visit, fully expecting a refund, the older gentleman was rude and defensive. Never got a refund and cannot wear these glasses. The worst care I have ever received. I went to another eye doctor, they did a full eye exam, then checked the prescriptin on the glasses and said it was wrong. "No wonder you're seeing triple, this prescription is wrong." I have been a patient at RPV for about 5 or 6 years and had great experiences with both Drs. Hyatt and Scheff. They are thorough, professional, and caring. When I have had eye injuries, they found ways to fit me in right away. When I am leaving town, they always make sure I have enough contact lenses to last the trip, even giving me trial pairs when my new orders are not yet in. When I recommend RVP to others, they have also reported good experiences. read more

I just got off the phone with this office and the woman I spoke to (old caucasian) was REALLY rude and not helpful and for NO REASON. I remembered the interaction I had with the doctor and he's AMAZING and honest. However if I ever have to see or communicate with that woman again I might not be back next year. PS. EYEMED INSURANCE USERS BEWARE. Roland Park Vision Service practices highly deceptive, bait and switch pricing to lure clients in. Once serviced, the office staff have a nasty surprise in store. Using the Eyemed provider list of local practitioners, I called RPV office manager & carefully requested a total up front (my cost) quote for my out of pocket expense for: eye examination, fitting for rigid gas permeable lenses and purchase of two lenses. I was given what seemed a fair quote of ~ $180. Eyemed insurance to pay the remainder of the bill. On 2/1/19 after the final fitting appointment, office staff billed $302.50. I on good faith with Roland Park believed Eyemed insurance would cover the difference. It turns out, what Roland Park Vision staff did was create an entirely different, fictitious, greatly inflated BILL out of my pocket at check out. I do not take kindly to such fraudulent bait and switch billing schemes. Another RPV customer experienced the same shenanigans by this office with her insurance [see Rachel S. Yelp Review 9/8/18]. Avoid this highly unethical business. Target, Walmart, Costco infinitely better options. Buyer beware. read more

If you do not have vision insurance, I do not recommend this office. It costs $250 for a routine eye exam and contact lens fitting-- that's the cost even before you order any lenses. There are several options (like Pearle Vision and optometrists in Costco) that charge less than HALF that much. The services here are adequate, and the office space and equipment are nice enough, but it is not worth the inordinate cost for these basic services when there are other options that are far more affordable. read more

Until I came to Roland Park Vision, I never had a nice pair of glasses. I ended up buying two frames, and an additional set of lenses for another frame, and, I got an eye exam done. I've been burnt so many times on chain eyeglass stores that I just had to go to a private store/practice, and I was pleasantly surprised by taking a chance on this store. Here was my deal: I got a vision exam, and the doctor explained everything he did, and made time to be thorough, and explained why I had a prescription change. Then, I bought some great Gucci frames, and they got the prescription just right - a first for me. After a car accident, my glasses were destroyed, and Gucci stopped manufacturing the frame. After hemming and hawing about a new frame, I picked one out, and after a few days, didn't love it. They let me exchange them, and choose a new one, with new lenses. I wasn't charged for the old pair. Even then, I bought an additional frame from an Oakley store - and the frame was uncomfortable. The staff was familiar enough with Oakleys (even though they didn't sell Oakley products) that they adjusted the frame and showed me how to get acclimated to them. Then they made lenses for me. I've recommended them to friends and co-workers, I'm a customer for life. read more

This is the second time my husband and I have been to Dr. Hyatt's office. He has a solid staff all of whom are helpful, and efficient in assisting patients. Dr. Hyatt himself is a caring optometrist, knowledgeable and approachable. He doesn't try and push unnecessary treatments or prescriptions on patients. He's honest and gives patients a fair yet easy to understand diagnosis as well as a choice. He told me I could choose whether I wanted to get bifocals or single vision lenses. My husband and I will be customers for a long time, and would recommend Dr. Hyatt to any of our friends or family. read more

Came here a while back for contacts prescription renewal and was totally scammed. Among hundreds of dollars worth of "fees" for services I was not told would cost anything and had thought were part of my general eye exam, I was also charged a $100 contacts "fitting fee" despite having worn contacts for years. I just had an eye exam and they had cute designer glasses. I bought Ray bans prescription sunglasses for a good deal and the doctors wore masks and they had new plastic shields for greater protection. They also cleaned all the frames before and after I tried them on. It was by appointment only. Highly recommend right now. read more

I was really looking forward to having a place nearby for my vision services. I have lived in many states and overseas and I must say that I am very unhappy with "Roland Park Vision". My insurance usually covers my exam and they had told me that they took my insurance. Then after all was done they charged me for a fitting fee ($93). This is part of the exam. I dont mind paying...it is just the fact that they were so sneaky about it. read more

I had an all-around terrible experience at RPVS. From Dr. Hyatt and the receptionist being incredibly disrespectful, to being charged more than 10 times the cost I was quoted over the phone, nothing about the appointment went well, but I was particularly upset about being overcharged after confirming the quoted cost before the appointment. Being ripped off seemed quite deliberate, and I expect they use this scheme regularly to get people in the door and then overcharge them once there's no backing out. My experience was as follows: I have contact lenses, and usually go to Costco each year to get an exam to get my prescription updated/renewed. My work just recently provided us with EyeMed insurance, and Costco is out of network so I decided to try someplace new to save money. Roland Park Vision Services was the worst choice I could have made. My insurance covers exams with a $10 copay. When I made the appointment (which took nearly a week -- I filled out an online appointment form and didn't receive a call back until all the slots I had listed as preferred had passed) I confirmed on the phone that I had EyeMed and it would be a $10 exam copay. I mentioned at that time that I wore contacts. After arriving for my appointment and being asked to take my contacts out, as is typical, they asked to see my glasses. I said I wasn't looking to get the prescription updated for them, I just needed a prescription for contacts, and was told to hand them over anyhow. I was then left sitting and waiting for 20 minutes, unable to see, which is an uncomfortable and headache inducing experience. After about 5 minutes of the exam, Dr. Hyatt stepped out to take a phone call for about 5 minutes. I found this to be quite disrespectful -- I was missing work for this appointment, and this was inconsiderate of my time. At the end of the exam, Dr. Hyatt told me he uses eye drops in place of the standard air puff test. He put the drops in my eyes and my eyes immediately felt extremely strange and I was having trouble keeping them open. I asked what the drops were - he now tells me it's an anasthetic and should wear off in 5-10 minutes. It took 4 hours before I felt like I could put my contacts back in because I still felt anesthetized for hours after. The kicker though, was when I went to pay. The receptionist tells me it comes to a total of $135. I protested, saying my insurance had a $10 copay for eye exams, and I had given them the info. They went on to tell me that the $135 was the $10 copay plus a $125 "premium contact lens fitting fee" which is not covered by my insurance. I protested, saying that I was told on the phone that it would just be a $10 copay. They responded quite rudely, retorting "how are we supposed to know if a patient needs contacts or not prior to the exam"? I had told them when I scheduled that I had contact lenses so this was a ridiculous response. When I insisted they should tell customers with contacts in advance that there's an additional fee, I was scoffed at and asked if I was paying via cash, check, or credit. Dr. Hyatt then came out to say that because I have an astigmatism, it was the premium rather than standard fitting, which was why the cost was so high. They also knew I had an astigmatism prior to the appointment as I'd given them my current Rx. Ultimately I paid because I couldn't figure out what else to do. RPVS will leave out vital information about their cost structure to rip you off. Based on their response it was clear to me they do this regularly, not that it was a mix up, as no one was the least bit apologetic. I highly advise that you find a different place to get your eye exam. read more

Front of the store staff went out of their way to help find my insurance information on a Saturday when CareFirst was closed. They were happy to accommodate me for a last minute appointment as well. Doctor was awesome and made me feel comfortable at every point in the eye exam. Will definitely return for my next exam. read more

I am a recent patient of Dr. Scheff, the younger doctor there. Dr. Scheff was very helpful and friendly. Very nice office staff - I felt like I was family going there. Got me fitted with great contacts and even gave me a free trial pair to hold me over while the main supply was on order. Definitely found my eye doc for life! read more

This office is terrible. I went there to get a prescription for contact lenses. They didn't bother to inform me that there is an additional charge of $100 (not covered by insurance) for contact lens examinations. I had canceled another appointment with another eye doc because these guys are nearby, so I went ahead with the exam. I have never been interviewed by a more imperious doctor in my life. How many times prior to this have I had my eyes checked with no problem at all? Plenty- I'm not a young guy! I am not going to go into Dr. Hyatt's manner in detail, but if there's an opposite of warm and cuddly, he was it. The black fellow who showed me how to put in and remove the contacts was a nice guy, in contrast to Arlene and Bruce Hyatt. Bruce Hyatt is the father of the guy in line to take over the practice, and since his son is going to take over the practice sooner or later, Bruce seems to have already checked out. Then, after reminding them many times that I was there to get a contact prescription, they forgot to give it to me after I paid the $100 with my credit card. I realized about 15 minutes after I left the office that they had not given me the script (this might not have been a simple mistake, as they wanted to me order the contacts from them), but they were about to close when I went back. Nonetheless I managed to squeeze myself back in, and Arlene called me an a**hole. Unbelievable, isn't it? At that point I called the credit card company and tried to reverse the $100 charge, but the good Doc was ready for this (probably has happened before) and wrote a screed to the credit card company blaming me for everything, and that he wanted his $100. The credit company believed him, and I still have to pay the $100. read more

Worst eye doctor I have ever been to in my 30 years. Rude receptionist. Rude assistants. The doctor was actually a nice guy but all the people around him need to learn how to talk to people. It's unbelievable. They talked me into upgrading my insurance and when I did and went back, they told me they no longer carried it! Just baffles me how places like this stay in business. Very difficult to get an appointment to see Dr..Only gave me an appointment after I told them I was going to buy frames snd lenses. The Dr. Was very thorough and efficient but the female salesperson was way to comfortable snd assertive. Borderline arrogant. I went along with their process and purchased as I said I would but in hindsight I would not purchase again from them. The Dr. has slot of confidence in her skill set, but she lacks relationship skills. Made me very uncomfortable and btw I have been in a strong sales environment my entire 30 year career. She needs to calm down, be trained in how to be customer centric and not be a know it all. Experience snd Arrogance are two very different traits. I hope the employee and the Dr. reads this and adjusts her attitude to be more warm, considerate snd patient. Also I had to call them after spending $900 on 1 pair of glasses two weeks later only to be handled improperly on the phone as if I was doing something wrong by calling to ask if they were ready. They told me 7 to 10 days and 14 days later they asked why I was calling them? Not good on the phone at all. I called the Dr. after the call as I was very frustrated and disappointed as I needed the glasses for vision. He became somewhat defensive. Doc not every business is perfect, and in fact most aren't. Customer feedback is critical if it's given its true sense. The customer is not always right, but the feedback should be weighed and can be useful for you to run and grow your business. She needs training or she should go. As a luxury buyer I should feel comfortable and relaxed so to buy and be serviced. If you want to represent and sell a brand like Tom Ford then your staff should conduct themselves appropriately. Btw the gentlemen that was in the store when I finally picked up the glasses was outstanding and focused on me and my purchase. He demonstrated outstanding customer handling skills. My 5 year old son had an appointment today. He has worn glasses before but they were broken. I could not get another pair for him because he was due for an updated exam. We saw Dr. Bruce Hyatt. He asked me if I had his old glasses. I told him that I did not. He proceeded with the exam and reassured me that he had seen children as young as 6 months old and not to worry. Dr. Hyatt became irritated when my 5 year old son could not see the images on the wall. Dr. Hyatt kept commenting that he couldn't help prescribe lenses for my son because he wasn't responding. Eventually, Dr. Hyatt said I needed to reschedule when I could bring back his old glasses. I told him I wasn't sure if I could locate them. Again, he instructed me to reschedule. I asked him if he would make me reschedule if this was his very first eye exam. He stared at me blankly and replied, "I have other patients scheduled and do not have time to coach him." I told my son to get out of the chair and got our belongings to leave. I walked out to an empty waiting room. Instantly, I became angry because Dr. Hyatt insisted that he couldn't continue my son's exam for the nonexistent patients waiting. What would he have done if I'd said that he lost his glasses? I told Dr. Hyatt and the reception staff that this would not have happened if my son was a little white boy. I have NEVER experienced anything like this in my life. I will do everything in my power to ensure that Roland Park Vision does not bill my insurance for this foolishness. read more

I called there today after reading such great reviews. The receptionist answered the phone and slurred her words so badly it took a second to figure out that I hadn't dialed a wrong number. I asked her about setting an appointment and she asked what kind of insurance I had. I told her and she said that they weren't a provider but gave a discount on my insurance. I then asked about setting an appointment again and she said, "just call us back when you want to come in." I then asked her what days weren't available, since I wasn't getting any times/dates from her. "The doctor isn't here on Thursdays," she said. I thanked her and told her I would check my schedule and call her back. "Mmm-mmm," was her unprofessional reply. More like uh-uh on my part. I'll go elsewhere. read more

My first experience with Roland Park Vision Services has been a great one. It started with the very friendly and helpful reception who were able to squeeze me in on a whim for an appointment. Dr. Hyatt was very friendly and honest with great bedside manner. It was obvious through the duration of my appointment that he really cared about me as a patient, which is more than I can say for many optometrists that I have seen. I use to live in the area and have since moved 45 minutes away, yet I still drive to Roland Park Vision for mine and my son's eye appointments. A customer shouldn't ever have to go through this. Ever.
