I have managed to get down to Rogers Place for a few events (Keith Urban and Oil Kings), but last night was my first Oilers game (vs Florida!) in the new barn. We started off the night by taking the LRT from Century Park, I paid my $3.50 parking and our LRT tickets and we were on our way. We didn't want to wait for the NAIT train on the Metro Line, so we just took the regular LRT and got off at Bay Enterprise. It was only a couple of blocks walk and we were there. They have a pedestrian area that you walk through leading right up to Ford Hall.
Once we were in, the entrance lines moved fast, we were through it all in under 5 minutes (we got the fast line!!). Then we were off to find our seats. We were in Section 217, so we walked along the main concourse to get to the escalator on the other side of the building (the one by Ford Hall was packed!!). Along our journey, we stopped for some expensive but tasty Nachos, Burritos and bottle water - for $5 a bottle, I was determined to enjoy every single drop of that water. My brother loved his burrito, and the YEG Nachos will always be my go-to. Once we did the very steep (and slightly scary!) walk down to row 3 in our section, we were finally seated and ready to go! We found the seats were tight, but the view was wicked! Being in Row 3, we didn't have problems seeing over the people in front of us, and we had a bird's eye view of the entire rink. And man I'll tell you, that screen is huge!!! With our wicked view of the rink, we only watched the screen when there was a stop in play and they were playing videos or trying to pump the crowd up. I didn't leave my seat the entire game, mainly because I didn't want to do that steep walk down to my seat again.
During my other visits to Rogers Place, we sat in different sections of the rink. For Keith Urban, we were in one of the upper rows in the 200's. I will tell you right now, I would not recommend these seats. With the 2nd section being so steep, over half of our view of the rink was blocked (and this was with people sitting back in their seats), and we missed almost everything. It was not an enjoyable experience. For the Oil Kings game, we were in the Lower bowl, those seats were awesome, and there are even cup holders!!!
Anywho, after the Oilers game, we walked around for what felt like forever looking for the MacEwan LRT Station. After a lot of wandering and following several different slightly intoxicated Oilers jerseys, we finally found it!! We did see 1 LRT sign, but it certainly did not point us in the right direction. After finally on the platform, we waited very patiently for the LRT to arrive. After 10 minutes it finally did, but because we were at the front of the platform, the train was no where near us. Needless to say, we had to wait for the next one that arrived 15 minutes later. Due to all of this, the slow speed on the Metro Line, and having to change trains at Health Sciences, we finally arrived at Century Park AN HOUR later. It was a late night, but we made it.
We didn't want to mess around with the parking downtown, but I think I will be more prepared if I get the opportunity to go to another game and reserve parking ahead of time and go to downtown early to beat the rush. Getting home after midnight is unacceptable. However, I did not include the LRT debacle in my rating, only the lack of signage.
All in all, we had a wonderful night out and I can not wait until my next Rogers Place experience!! read more
