Universiade Pavilion - Unmissable landmark.

The real name for this place is the Universiade Pavilion - but it's, more appropriately, called the…read moreButterdome by everyone. For obvious reasons. It's shaped as a giant block and painted a golden yellow. When I moved here, I saw it from a distance and thought it was an unfinished building with exposed inner walls. I always thought it looked like the inside of a Crunchie chocolate bar, a giant block of sponge toffee. Garish and giant as it is, it's a landmark, which is a good thing on a big campus, so many people have a love-hate relationship to it. It's right next to the sports hub of the university and it is used for big events, like concerts, sports meets, craft sales and also had an indoor climbing gym which is open to the public as well. I've been there on more than one occasion and it's a great place for a concert or just to use as a landmark when giving directions. Hard to miss a big block of butter...

I've been here to write exams over the years of my various degrees -- stressful and the desks aren't amazing either but this is a good use of the space. I've been here for at least one concert and it was a neat venue for this party! I've also really enjoyed watching/participating in sports activities here -- which is really the reason that the building exists, it having been constructed for the 1983 Universiade if I remember correctly. This is an essential facility for a University of this size. And while I do not visit it terribly frequently I think that it is still well used and in good shape for hosting the many events and activities that it does over the years!

I've been here over the years for Trappers games and more recently an Edmonton Prospects game. I've also been here for a party during the World's Masters Games (at which I was volunteering) and the field is a really neat concert venue as a result. It's perhaps not as big as a bigger ballpark but it is certainly very useable and useful. Having sat in box seats as well as in the regular stands I can appreciate both. The field is parking and transit accessible. I like to just walk down to it from downtown as it's a nice walk. While I'm not a huge fan of baseball, I will admit that one's enjoyment of a game here really has more to do with who one is with than the game itself for the most part. I think that the more dated aspects of the park would become renewed if we again had a higher league ball team playing here.

We love to go to games here and appreciate that seats are so inexpensive!…read more This is a fun alternative date night or weekend spot. On Canada Day, you can stay past the game to watch the fireworks. There is a concert .in between the two events. The food here is okay. It has switched to Remax field and I think that this is why the menu changed as well. There are fewer choices than before. I want to try to nacho poutine next time I am there. There are a variety of seats to choose from including lower bowl where you sit on field level, balcony seats, nose bleeds, and bleachers. I believe the field seats have a private bar and you can order your food instead of standing in line. We go to games as often as we can

Commonwealth Stadium

Being that this was a sold out Grey Cup game, there were a LOT more fans in attendance than usual. The biggest negative we encountered was the lack of staff directing traffic at the ends of the stadium. We ended up being stuck in the middle of a barely moving crowd for so long that we missed some of the opening ceremony. It was very dangerous and scary to be trapped in the middle of that, especially when security and the police came running through to attend to a situation. This was poor planning on the part of the stadium and luckily ended up being uneventful for us. The upside from what I saw, was that the concessions, 50/50 sellers and beer hawkers seemed to be reasonably efficient. The halftime show was absolutely amazing, the fly-overs awe inspiring and the game was pretty good too. All things considered, we had a great time. It's just a shame the Red Blacks didn't win...

I haven't actually been to a game here This review is specifically for the special privileged use for the stadium (specifically the stairs)! Thank you to November Project for scoring another great summer at the stadium stairs! (see NP's twitter for details ) If you thought the Royal Glenora and Wolf Willow stairs were hard, think again! Commonwealth Stadium has rows upon rows of extra steps of all varieties, from the lower bowl's shallow wide steps to deeper shorter steps, to the upper bowl's almost-scary even steeper staircases! (Like you're hiking down an Aztec ruin haha) But wait, there's more! You only get 30-45 minutes to get er' done! (Or to challenge those once a month 96'er specials - do the WHOLE stadium in ONE hour!!! Bahahaha!) Feeling the burn yet?

For all you film buffs, now is the time to take advantage of the Edmonton International Film…read moreFestival (EIFF) before it ends. The EIFF has been on since Sept. 26, and will continue until this Saturday, Oct. 4th. If you're thinking its just a bunch of artsy fartsy movies that are simply cinematic metaphors, you're sadly missing out on a lot. These films are where the real talent lies, where you can watch meaningful scenes unfold before you. I just went to catch "Rachel Getting Married" starring Anne Hathaway tonight, and it was amazing. It's great to sit in a large theatre knowing you're sitting among people who appreciate films just as much as you do. It's only on for three more days, so try to catch at least one film. The movies are being played at the Empire City Centre 9 and Metro Cinema downtown this year (Garneau and Princess theatres couldn't be used this year), and you can just purchase the tickets at the entrance like any other film. The EIFF will also be hosting a closing night gala on their last day on Saturday, at Empire City Centre 9 Theatre. The last film starts at 7:30pm and the after-party begins at 9:30pm. Tickets for the closing gala are sold at Tix on the Square (at Sir Winston Churchill Square) until this Friday, Oct. 3rd at 6pm.

The opening night film is something I anxiously await each year, this year it was Cut Bank filmed mostly in nearby Innisfree. The gala afterwards is always great so that you can have a glass of bubbles & a few nibbles while catching up with the other festival goers & discussing the film. As a parent it makes me happy that there are selections here that I can bring my kids to & expose them to this level of films & documentaries that get them thinking & make them aware of subjects they wouldn't be get while attending the average *blockbuster*, such as Just Eat It, Midnight Sun and Springhammer . One of my favourite aspects of the festival although I can't attend as many of the days as I'd like is the Lunchbox Shorts. You go in & have your @SubwayCanada sub, water & cookie while watching a themed grouping of short films, today were a few somewhat twisted but highly entertaining & funny shorts! I have a few more selections circled in my program before it ends with the closing film Gone Doggy Gone & then the gala to say good-bye for another year, I'm so proud of @edmfilmfest & this event that they pull off year after year!! #EIFF14 #yeg #yegfilm
