The Oilers were founded in 1971 by W. D. "Wild Bill" Hunter and Dr. Chuck Allard and played its first season in 1972 as one of the twelve founding franchises of the major professional World Hockey Association (WHA). After joining the NHL, the Oilers went on to win the Stanley Cupon five occasions: 1983-84, 1984-85, 1986-87, 1987-88 and 1989-90. Along with the Pittsburgh Penguins, they are tied for the most championshipswon by any team since the NHL-WHA merger, as well as the most won by any team that joined the league in or after 1967. Tonight is their night to shine. I'm sorry Dallas but I'm rooting for Edmonton Oilers.

Yes, it became clear that this was the important conclusion to draw as the Esks beat the Stampeders in a dramatic last second thriller. I would have thought that it was a hard fought match between two excellent teams, but the fans informed me otherwise with repeated chants in the stadium and surroundings: "Calgary Sucks." More specifically, "Stamps Suck Shit." Oh, and that you want the Eskimos to score so that a sponsor will donate money to HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. Yes, that is shouted. Don't ask. Just for sh*ts and giggles, I'd like to see the NFL adopt CFL rules for a week. Why? Because it leads to awesome football! There are only three downs, the play clock is only 20 seconds, the defense has to line up a yard back from the line of scrimmage, and the field is about 10% wider and longer - all of which leads to a whole lot more offensive action and risk taking. And less boredom. There are also some random things like twelve players per side and points for missed field goals (WTF?). But I'll take the package over the NFL any day. Except I could really use the Packers in the CFL since only the Packers matter. Whatever, the important lesson is that Stamps Suck Shit.

The Calgary vs Edmonton games are great to watch and even better to attend. If have never been to a game you should definitely put it on your to do list because it's quite the time. Especially when it's a rivalry game. The crowd gets so into and the atmosphere is awesome. Like I said, I am not a big fan but I enjoy attending the games.

You know when you're in Edmonton you have to be a hockey fan. My kids play hockey and the first…read moretime I ended up at an Oil Kings game it was with the kids teams and I wasn't sure what to think but wow did I have a good time. The Oil Kings are geared towards a fun family night out. Not only is it good hockey (which is great if you are into the game) but they have lots of entertaining things happening throughout the game as well. They have fun little games, the T-shirt throws, the wave (who doesn't like that), sing-a-longs etc. The team also encourages lots of community involvement. We have gone with our hockey team and the kids have played on the ice, we've seen other teams there as the honour guard, and bench warming. It's so much fun to be part of the action. Every year the Oil Kings also does the teddy bear toss which raises both funds and teddy bears for Ronald McDonald House and it shows their community spirit which is fantastic to see in a local sports club. If you have never been out to a game I would say take advantage of their pricing - it's a great night out for a club or a family. While you might not be able to afford to go to an Oilers game you can definitely afford to the go to an Oil Kings game - same action and so much more fun for kids and families.

The Edmonton Oil Kings are a Western Hockey League team that started in Edmonton for the 2007-08…read moreseason. The Western Hockey League is the top junior league in Western Canada and is a part of the Canadian Hockey League. This is the second best hockey you'll get in Edmonton, next to the Edmonton Oilers. But for the price, the Oil Kings are of much better value. Both teams play at Rexall Place, and an Oilers seat that will cost you $200, will cost you about $25 for an Oil Kings game. Although it isn't top tier hockey, it is fast-paced and high energy because the players are trying to get drafted into the NHL and impress the scouts who are always paying attention. The Oil Kings sell themselves as being family-oriented hockey (probably because most people can afford to bring family to a game) so it is a totally different atmosphere than an Oilers game. There are a lot of games going on during the TV time outs that are geared towards kids. The club also has a lot of promotional nights to draw people in, such as Wiener Wednesdays ($2 weenies!), vuvuzela nights, 80s nights, and they will often give away merch to the first 1000 people through the door. We were at a game the other night and the Oil Kings scored five goals, so everyone got a $10 Earl's gift card in their way out. If you are looking to catch a quality hockey game and either can't get Oilers tickets or just want to spend less, the Oil Kings are a great option. It can be a fun night with friends if you don't want to splurge on the Oilers. Tickets range from $17-$35, plus service charge.
