I'm rating the Edmonton Oilers five stars based on their dominance from 1983 to 1990. Sadly, Edmonton has only made the playoffs twice since losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in a heartbreaking Game 7 in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals. However, their history in the 80s cannot be denied. The Oilers won the Cup five times in seven years: 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990. To date, the Oilers are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the sixth-most number of Stanley Cup championships. The Oilers and the Penguins have the most NHL titles outside of the Original Six. A finer point, the Oilers franchise did not join the NHL until 1979 while the Penguins were part of the league's 1967 expansion. It's impressive how many championships Edmonton racked up after being a member of the NHL for only about a decade. "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky, started his NHL career with Edmonton. He is the franchise's all-time scoring leader in both goals (583) and points (1,669). Unlike many of the great hockey players today, Gretzky was not drafted. I know that the Oilers suck this year. That's no secret. But they are still our Oilers. Of course we all long for to get the glory days back (the days of Gretzky and of Stanley Cups) but those days will never be again. We need to move on. The Oilers organization is not that bad. They seem to care more about politics and money more than fans though, so that's definitely a strike against them. However, I won't hold that against the players themselves. Edmonton's loyal fans are really all that are keeping this team afloat in my mind. And the Oilers do have VERY loyal fans. I think that says something about the Oilers. The most lovely, bodacious and sweet Jennie M - Community Manager for Yelp Edmonton - scooped me up from the airport and surprised me with tickets to my first NHL game ever. I've been to many Houston Aeros and peewee games, but this was an experience. My highlights? 1. Dem hockey dudes are HOT. Who ever thought a mouth of missing teeth would make a girl swoon? 2. Friendly fans. The Oilers were playing the Boston Bruins that night (2/18), and from what I hear about NHL games, the rink isn't the only place where you'll see people throwing a few punches. But Oilers fans are redic friendly. A packed stadium and no drunken buffoons, no fights, no curse words. Fans were civilized. 3. No one stole my jacket when I left it in my seat! What? I was surprised when Jennie M left her jacket at her seat, and was worried. "This is Canada. People don't do stuff like that." So after the 2nd period, I tried it, and I'll be damned - my jacket was still there when we returned. Crazy. I know. 4, Rumor has it that people are calling the team the "Spoilers," because they're going to spoil other NHL teams from making the playoffs. And they didn't disappoint. The game went into OT and later resulted in a shoot out where they beat the Bruins 4-3. read more

I have great memories of going to Edmonton Trappers (the city's former team) games with my dad as a young kid, so I'm surprised that it wasn't until this season (2011) that I decided to go to an Edmonton Capitals game. I was certainly glad I did. The games have a very laid back atmosphere, probably thanks to the naturally slower pace to the sport (compared to hockey, which is what I usually watch). I'm not one to judge the actual quality of the players, since I'm not a huge fan of the sport, but it was still an exciting game to watch. They have cool special event days with lots of giveaways, so check their website before you go to a game. At the game, there are lots of little contests and giveaways in between innings too. The concessions are stocked with almost anything you could possibly want in terms of snacks, such as pretzels, fries and freezies, plus the usual beer, hotdogs and burgers. If it's a sunny day, wear sunscreen because it gets hot and there isn't a whole lot of shade. Tickets start at $10 for bench seats and $13 for reserved seating. The priciest seat costs $23 in advance, so it's definitely a cheap game compared to other professional sports. read more

Win or lose I love the Oilers. Any fan you talk to these days seems defeated and all they can do is dream of the dynasty team of the past with some of the greatest players this game has ever seen. The past few seasons the Oilers have done terribly but I still cheer for them and I always will. You have to do bad to be good in the league and we have been doing bad for years and have finally hit rock bottom. The team can finally be built with young, good players. Well, I certainly was a naive optimist during the period of my last review. I am now mired in my 8th consecutive NHL playoffs which the Oliers are not participating in. The team seems further behind in its rebuild than in 2010 Our 4th coach in as many years will be kept even though he looks dangerously over his head. The assistant coaches who have survived numerous cuts are sticking around because they are still part of the ex Oiler alumni club. Our greedy owner has muscled Non profit groups like Northlands out of the picture and forced the hand of city council to meet his ridiculous demands Tickets and concessions cost more than ever. I have been to two games while up here working with coworkers and have had a great time. I do not like baseball but with a good group of people and some beer, it can be fun. The stadium is easy to get to and no matter what we got some great seats. I do really pay attention to the game but enjoy talking to other people around us and enjoying the atmosphere. The people are very nice and willing to chat about anything while the game is going on. The last time we went, we got to run the bases after the game! For the ones that were having some beers, very exciting! I enjoy these smaller stadiums and games because you don't feel like cattle and the players are working hard to win. read more

To me, the obvious thing to change would be management, Lowe et all has been given enough time and the talent to turn things around. As a goalie, while Scrivens isn't no Price, he can't be faulted playing behind a bunch of no names on defense. Just fix this and a overall team system, easier said than done. Let's get one thing straight: I don't like baseball. But, we all do crazy things for love, and so I found myself at a Capitals game at Telus Field. The game itself was mildly entertaining, although mostly I didn't pay that much attention. But, I have to say I had a pretty good time. The atmosphere is laid back, and there's enough room in the stands to get some personal space if having someone screaming at the pitcher from right behind your head isn't your scene. And there's some nice views at sunset too. Plus the tickets are cheap. My hotdog was tasty and greasy, and the beer barely qualified as such, but I guess that's just part of the experience. read more
