I am a big fan of true-blue Filipino breakfast food, and what else typifies a traditional Pinoy breakfast more than the tried and tested tapsilog. A tapsilog is comforting because it is familiar, filling and tasty. The slightly salty and flavorful morsels of marinated beef is tender to the bite, and goes well with the fried egg and garlic fried rice that complete the trifecta. Of course, a good dipping vinegar and a slight zing from small chili ground up in the vinegar sauce makes the equation complete. Rodic's has become a true institution and authority of tapsilog. It's branches in the UP Shopping Center has been around for quite some time now, and it has been considered a perennial favorite from among the UP crowd - something that students enjoy and also, something that alumni always go back to the campus for in order to relive the memories of their "starving college kid" days. Though the prices may no longer be as affordable and practical for college kids, with each tapsilog meal setting you back P85 a pop, the quality and the taste is always consistent. Also, what makes Rodic's tapa unique is that the tapa is shredded and mixed in with the fried rice. You are not a true blue-blooded (Or Maroon-blooded, as the case may be) student of the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus if you have never eaten at Rodics. A campus institution since the 50s, Rodics has built its reputation around its Tapsilog. The beef is flossed rather than made into strips, and then topped over steaming rice and served with an egg. It's sinciriously one of the best Tapsilogs in the country, and nobody will dispute that. Rodics has a pretty extensive carinderia-level menu should you want to try something else, but really, everybody goes here for the Tapsilog. I'm not from UP. I'm a green-blooded, through and through Lasalista. I've been to Quezon City less than ten times in my life and I certainly didn't know Rodic's Diner even existed. That all changed after I met my girlfriend who is a hardcore Isko. Since I met her, I've gotten to know Quezon City and all the hidden gems and diamonds in the rough the city had. She took me to Rodic's after attending the ColorBlast 2015 run in the UP Academic Oval. We walked a couple of blocks from the oval to what looked like an old warehouse filled with food stalls, computer shops, photocopying centers, and for some reason souvenir shops. I learned later that this place was (quite misleadingly) called the Shopping Center. Rodic's occupied two spots along the hallway, one in front of the other, and both had upstairs seating as well. Despite the claustrophobic atmosphere and the teasing existence of an AC unit that never got turned on, the food was amazing. Their famous tapsilog did not disappoint. Unlike most tapsilog places where you can count the number of beef strips they give you, this place didn't care. They gave you a plateful of rice, covered it with a buttload of tapa, and then covered that with a fried egg. Voila. The breakfast of champions, available all day. read more

Unless you're studying in UPD or live somewhere close and have the limitless opportunities to visit this place whenever you want, I suggest you skip everything else on the menu and just go for their famous tapsilog. At P85, it's more than worth it. Drizzle in a bit of vinegar over everything and voila - tapsilog experience complete. Just a heads up tho - if you're planning on a take-out, I suggest you go for the whole tapsilog meal and avoid just going for the tapa minus the rice and the egg. So not worth it. You only save around P10 when you skip them. To round it up, another dish that I love from this place is their sizzling sisig. I've also tried some of their other stuff but not really that impressed. So for now, I come here just for their tapsilog alone and the occasional sisig cravings. Always a win-win for both dishes. read more

This diner is famous for their Beef Tapa, a Filipino breakfast classic that's also great for any time of the day. Even people from Ateneo and Katipunan Avenue know about this place and visit when they have the time. They'd take a jeep just to experience Rodic's beef tapa. Yes, it's that good plus it's also cheap (below Php 150). My friends and I were really looking for a famous Isaw place in UP Diliman when we got a bit lost and just decided to settle down and have lunch at Rodic's. It was inside the Shopping Center and it had two floors. The meals they had were classic Filipino meals like the Silogs (Viand + Sinangag na kanin at itlog.) We sat down at the second floor, which was a bit small and had 4 tables. I really enjoyed their Tapsilog. The beef tapa had the right season. There's suka for those who like their beef tapa a bit more sour. The egg was the usual carinderia sunny side up, the yellow part a little cooked. The fried rice was also okay. This place is definitely good for groups. Their price is also student friendly and they have generous servings. Whenever you're around Katipunan or UP Diliman, you should definitely give this diner a vistit. read more

Rodic's is truly a classic. It's where my parents used to go on casual dates while they were in college. It's where I ate lunch when I first spent time on the UP campus as a sophomore in high school. Now, as a fully fledged iskolar ng bayan, I drag my non-Diliman friends to the shopping center so they can taste what it means to be a UP student. I'm being completely unbiased when I say they have the best tapa in the metro. And it's held that honor for years - my parents say the shredded beef topped with a [slightly greasy] egg still tastes the way it did all those years ago. Although it's slightly more expensive now at 85 pesos a plate, I still set aside a bit of my allowance every month for their famous take on the classic Filipino dish. If you're not in the mood for tapa, Rodic's offers other rice meals like any other carinderia. For example, the pork barbecue is also great. But it's really the tapa that draws both current students and alumni again and again to the two stalls in that grubby little building, and if you haven't tried it yet, you need to find out why it earned Rodic's a spot on the list of UP Diliman's best fare. I'm one of the few UP students who doesn't like Rodic's. I've tried their food several times now, but no matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to catch the enthusiasm of their other patrons. I get that it's affordable which is something that people on a budget (like me) sorely need. I get that they serve the Filipino favorite "-silog" meals which consist of a viand, rice, and fried egg. I also get that they have more than adequate servings that satisfy most of their customers. Yeah, I get it, but this one's just not doing it for me somehow. Maybe in a couple of years, I'll see myself dining at Rodic's and enjoying their food, but right now, I think it's best if I just leave it be. read more

No UP student should graduate from the university without eating at the infamous Rodic's Diner. I still recall when the price of a Tapsilog used to be just around 60 pesos. That was when I was an incoming Freshman. When I frequent Shopping Center nowadays, I always get appalled by the increasing prices! By second year, the price was around 70. And now, the last time I checked, it was around 80 bucks! Props for them though for thinking like real businesspeople. I know people would still buy Rodic's despite its hiking price just because it's delicious and it's probably one of the affordable yet decent dishes around UP. I'd be amazed if someone said they hated it! It still confuses me though how this could be one of the well-known food spots in Diliman. It's pretty alright for a tapsilog, I mean. read more

When I first got into UP, all my UP friends told me to go straight to Rodics. UP alumni say Rodics is one of the things they miss about UP, and many people will trek to the campus just to have their famous tapsilog. It's been around for a while now and many people will boast that it's the best tapsilog you'll ever have. If you're looking to food trip in the UP Diliman Campus, this should rank number one on your list of must-tries. You'll find Rodics in UP's Shopping Center, usually packed and filled with people. Don't worry though, they're used to the lines and they'll take your order quickly. They've recently expanded with a second store right across the main branch with more tables and chairs. Although Rodics also has other rice meals you can order, if it's your first time, don't even think about passing on the tapsilog! :) read more

My friend once told me that I couldn't call myself an Isko from UP until I had tried Rodic's at UP Shopping Mall. Unfortunately, he was drunk and forgot I was from Ateneo. That aside, I decided to try the place out in the shopping center famed for its cheap services and even cheaper food. I walked from UP Town Center, because I thought that you could do that, but I learned the hard way that you were better off taking a jeep into UP or bringing your own car via a 30-45 minute walk in summer heat. Rodic's came across as a regular carinderia aesthetically, but the long lines betrayed that impression quickly enough and got me to see how popular and packed the establishment really was. I was seated fast enough though, and immediately ordered the tapsilog, and with that much rice, meat, and a beautifully runny egg to top it all off, I definitely got bang for my buck. I certainly got why Iskos (and people, in general) can't get enough of Rodic's. read more

I know Rodic's is one of those tapa places that you're just supposed to love, but I think it's really just okay. Not really the best tapa, but a real winner in the university food scene. At less than a hundred pesos, you get a heaping plate of hot, steaming white rice topped with generous shreds of the famous tapa and fried egg on the side. I like how the egg is often semi-cooked in the yolk part (although I doubt that's a style done on purpose haha) because that's how I usually make mine. The tapa does taste fine, but it's the sweet kind-- I like mine more garlicky and salty, and in whole pieces, not shreds. You can always adjust the taste though with your classic pinoy condiments! Rodic's is a little cramped too, but that's part of the charm. It's hardly a bother, and at least it's air-conditioned. But do try to get a table at the first floor for more comfort! read more
