Rodeway Inn is my go-to place for lodging whenever I come out to Barstow for adventures in the desert. The proprietors are very attentive, and the facilities are good. I made the mistake once of booking another accommodation, and was very grateful that Rodeway Inn had space when we came in late one night after the other motel proved unacceptable. Wow, clearly they pay for reviews, because this place was beyond terrible and had good ratings across several sites. My faith in Yelp faltered today. Really hard. Cons Beds felt like sleeping on floor Blankets were from roadside stand, literally had wolves and eagles (tacky but least of the issues) Floor was peeling up 1 ply toilet paper Pillows are hard enough to concuss during a pillow fight Walls super thin and fan wouldn't stay on in bathroom, so we listened to noise all night Floors left socks dirty (we weren't there long) Poorly done remodeling (looked like their cousin did it for free) Site says pet friendly, front desk says no pets (after we paid) Poor lighting, especially around vanity Fridge was not on, so could not keep medical supplies cooled In a crappy neighborhood Water in shower cycled between hot and cold randomly Basically they cut so many corners that they made for a very unpleasant stay. Stayed here twice during the past two weeks and still give it a 5 star rating. Nikkie and Roger are very personable and the dogs are very friendly. Breakfast foods are fresh and just what we need to start us on our way for the long desert drive. Eggs cooked to order and waffles are available for those who want something like that. My husband made a reservation through Booking.com after reading all the great reviews. We were staying in Barstow one night with our small dog, which we stated on the reservation. We checked in at 10:30pm (also stated on reservation) and the owner was intoxicated and the check in took very long because he would not stop talking. I took my dog for a bathroom break during this time and the owner had let his 2 young dogs out, which charged us multiple times! My dog gets afraid when dogs do this. Then, we get to the room and the tv doesnt work, (channels don't change) the bathroom sink's cold water doesn't work (until the morning), the fridge is not turned on , and one of the bedside lights is out. The next morning when I took my dog out the owner let out his dogs again and the same thing happens. When we went to breakfast (which by the way you can NOT bring up to your room, which he rudely told my husband), I informed him that some people with dogs do not like to have other dogs charge them. He was very rude and told me, "that is why I tell them to tell me when you walk your dog and I will not have my dogs out." He never mentioned this to my husband at check in, though he insists he did. Who knows what time you are going to walk your dog the next day? He went back and forth with me about this and told me that we should have mentioned this when making the reservation! We travel all the time with our dog and have NEVER had this happen and have NEVER experienced such poor customer service from an owner who claims he has been in business for 17+ years...very condescending. read more

Kind of awful. Our second floor was in the middle of a renovation. Windows were taped with plastic, fire extinguishers were not in place (contractor left them in the stairwell), drywall powder boxes were cluttering the exits. It was a real mess. The stairwell carpet was filthy. As were the carpets throughout the building. This is Barstow...and surprise, the air conditioner DIDN'T work!! We could only open the window 1.5", so you can guess how stuffy and warm our room was. The bed wasn't much better...we call this type a "taco" bed because they fold in the middle. In addition, the pillows on my bed stank of other people's head smell. It was so disgusting I tried not to breathe too deeply all night. Refrigerator was old. It didn't have the newer separate freezer compartment that we've come to expect...meaning we couldn't refreeze our ice chest coolers for the next day. Front desk was left with one employee after 7:00pm. She was a dear and really tried to be helpful, but she was trying to take care of the whole building on her own. I should have run (when I was checking in) when I overheard her on the phone with another guest who had checked in but was insisting on a new room. read more

I've checked-in here a couple times and had two different experiences. Both times were in June in the span of two weeks and checked in really late at night just before midnight. The hotel was undergoing some remodeling at that time and their main office literally was empty except for a table. First Check-In experience: The room was a good size with a king bed and it smelled of new paint. It had a small fridge, microwave that weren't plugged in as well as the clock radio by the bedstand. TV was at least plugged in. I was shocked, literally, when I tried to turn on the wall lamp next to the bed. The switch and base was made of metal and when I touched it to turn it on, it gave me a slight shock. It didn't happen all the time and I didn't think it was a static-shock either. In the bathroom, the shower curtain smelled like damp, used, wet towel. It stinks! The A/C took a while to cool the room and it was also quite noisy. The room & bahtroom had towels folded into what looked like elephants and other shapes. Same price, so same sized room right? No. The room itself was the same with the king bed, BUT, it had another room at the back, a good-size kitchenette. Complete with a medium sized fridge, microwave, electric stove, and a small round table with two chairs and working sink. The room was clean and smelled clean. I couldn't complain at all. I was really content. The A/C worked perfectly (although it had the same noise issue I had with the previous stay). The beds were ok. The place seems to be run by a family from India. Very nice folks. In the morning I was told that yeah the room she gave me was a bigger and pricier room but since they weren't busy (and I guess she wanted to go back to sleep) she went ahead and gave me that room. She also recognized me from previous stay and asked me to just call the hotel to book instead of doing it online. They can give you a better rate apparently than what you can get online. read more

I'm shocked at the high rating of this hotel. Traveler beware, spend a little bit more money and skip this place. The lobby was locked and you needed to buzz in, at 6:30pm, this wasn't in the middle of the night. The aircon wasn't on when we entered the room, and while it did work, it took hours for the room to cool down. The refrigerator didn't work, we were only staying one night and were so tired from travel that we didn't request a new room. The bath towels were small, rough, and stained. Police were at the hotel as we came back from dinner talking to one of the owners which raised red flags. Police sirens could be heard through the night. When I checked out the pool, there was a homeless camp behind the hotel. As we're just about to go to bed our neighbor entered his room next door and you could hear EVERYTHING through the joining door. He opened a soda can and it was like it was in the same room. We could even hear him snoring throughout the night. The sense or privacy and security was gone. This door was so joining door was so thin. We could even see the light come through under the door. As a couple who goes on road trips every year you want to give the small businesses the chance, but this was a mistake on our part. Learn from our experience and skip this place. read more

The pros- The room was super clean. The room we stayed in had three spaces- the room with two beds, bathroom and kitchen area in the back. The kitchen had a full size kitchen- fridge, stove, oven, microwave. The AC worked well for the room with beds. The owners were friendly. Dog friendly- though they charge extra and don't tell you that until you arrive even if you include the information on your online reservation. The cons- They turn off the AC and unplug fridge, so it takes awhile for things to get cold, which on a 105 degree day is not so great. I understand about energy conservation, but I needed to put food away in a cold fridge and the kitchen was over 100 degrees when we arrived. The pool, which is one reason why I chose this place was green with algae and had trash floating in it. Not clean or well maintained. Teens were bummed. Tried to take a cold shower to cool off when we arrived, but only had hot water come out- which I think the owners have no control over since I think it was just the very hot weather. Conclusion- for the cost, it was good enough for us to give 4 stars. Any more $ and I would given it only 3 stars. read more

Room was clean and bed comfortable. Looked like the room was recently remodeled. Had a fridge and microwave. The office staff was very friendly. At breakfast the man in the office was making everyone waffles and made to order eggs. He also had fresh strawberries for the waffles. He was a one-man show and really wanted to make all the waffles and asked some other guests to wait a minute while he ran up to fix a problem with our door really quick. It is your typical no-frills motel with thin walls (but did have a pool and gym), but the owners are clearly trying to give their guests a good experience. read more

Another of the many 1960s motels that dot Barstow's main drag, but the difference here is that they did a really nice job renovating the room interiors, and have customer service that is more like a 4-star hotel than a desert roadside motel. Also a pretty good breakfast with hot eggs and waffles as well as a big continental spread, and a small fitness center with some basic stuff. Convenient location right across the street from Vons and 99 Cent Only too. And as with most Barstow motels each room comes standard with a fridge/micro, coffee maker and very good cable TV package. WiFi also good and reliable. I did notice they charge $80-ish sometimes now which is awful spendy for Barstow ... this is markedly better than most other options in town though so I guess I can't blame them for gettin' their money if people are paying it. Tended to be closer to $60 when I first started passing through the area in 2015 though and was a very good value at that price, some hotel prices spiked a little in Barstow last year for reasons I still don't really understand (nothing new is going on there). Anyway, good choice if you're worried about some No Country For Old Men situation and you want something reliably good. They also often charge a very reasonable 8,000 Choice points per night. read more

Nice and affordable place. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a full sized fridge with a little kitchen in the back of the room. This includes an oven, a microwave, and a little circular kitchen table with two chairs. Also serves as a nice place to change if the other option is the cramped bathroom. You can also use the sink in the kitchen as an extra place to brush your teeth. The temperature of the room was perfect and comfortable. The beds came with cozy animal blankets which was a nice homey touch. The one drawback was when we walked into the room, the light switch by the door didn't work. Breakfast was better than expected. Someone was even there to cook our waffles and eggs on request. They had a coffee machine as well as a hot chocolate and caramel macchiato machine. Updated rooms! This hotel is a staple in downtown Barstow, part of the community for decades. In late 2017 the rooms were updated and they show very well. The upgrades make the rooms feel cozy. Hotel stays worry me because I love a good nights sleep. Surprisingly the beds were comfortable and sheets were not stiff and scratchy. I always bring my own pillow but the hotel provided pillows were comfy. The new shower interior is nice and flooring is all clean. I like the layout of the room. The staff are friendly and very accommodating. I don't eat wheat and she was willing to make me eggs to make sure I had a good breakfast. Although I didn't take her up on it, there was enough items to make a decent breakfast from. What a lucky find. read more

After getting stranded in Barstow with car troubles, my uncle and I found the Rodeway Inn and have had the most wonderful experience. The owners, Roger and Nikki, went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. They recommended local mechanics, helped us navigate the parts ordering process, and were incredibly flexible when we had to stay much longer than expected. They are an especially hardworking team, and clearly have the hotel managing process down to a science. The Inn itself was quite comfortable with all of the desired amenities - multiple wifi networks, a refreshing pool, functional gym, great beds, and the most impressive breakfast spread I've seen. There was a Jewish family staying here from Israel and they were enjoying the continental breakfast with us. The owner showed them the food labels how everything was Kosher. He had made sure all his food was accommodating to them even though it made it more difficult to order all his food. He even has gluten free options. He acted as a very attentive server going in the back room and frying eggs in the way each person wanted. Just super nice His daughter worked the front desk and was extremely delightful even when we spoke with her late at night on the phone and when we arrived in person close to 1 am.
