We came to Barstow to pick up a car and I chose this hotel last minute. The reason I chose it was for the full breakfast and they didn't disappoint. We arrived around 1am. Got checked in with ease and went to our room. The view is spectacular on the second floor. We overlook the pool and the desert and mountains are in the background. It's so serene. There's tons of parking (we brought a trailer) and the breakfast was great! Coffee's good too! We only paid $60 ( and it's November so it's pretty cold but the heater works perfectly). I'll be back in warmer months and bring the kids! There's lots of dirt to ride bikes and be outdoors away from the public. From what I've been told by the staff is that the hotel has been remodeled. It's kind of obvious that this place makes up fake reviews. There is no way that there could possibly be that high of a score with the experience we had. Driving down Route 66, Barstow was the first major town we had seen in a while, and the sun was setting, so we decided to stop for the night. We chose the place due to online reviews recommending a glowing business with great food and service. Any chance they were referring to another hotel? Upon arrival, we were asked to pay a $100 deposit along with the charge for the room itself. This is normal with some hotels and motels, so this was not a big deal. However, as we will discuss, the room itself seemed like it took less than $100 to furnish in the first place. Me and my father grabbed our bags and walked up to our room. In the hallway, there was another couple yelling and another dude putting on his pants. The first thing noticeable about the room was the smell... it smelled as if there had been a person in there smoking just before we arrived. It may be important to mention that this was a no-smoking room. We left after leaving our things to go out to eat in Barstow. Skip ahead an hour, and the only things we saw were liquor stores, truck repair shops, and Chinese food. We had to drive another 10 minutes away to get an actual fast food restaurant that seemed healthy and safe from COVID. This whole time I was scared that someone would break into our room, however, I'm not sure what they'd steal. Now is a good time to mention the biggest issue that it seems that most people are having. THE AC. It was so hot in the room, I thought the door was left open...upon closer inspection later, it turns out that the door was never closed by the previous tenant. We returned with food and we both noticed how firm the bed was along with the awful quality of the sheets. It would have probably been safer and more comfortable to sleep IN the desert and you would have less of a chance of getting bitten by something anyway. The shower was also a major issue. The water was cold and there was never really any hot water, plus the shampoo/conditioner was hard to open and dried my hair out even more. Finally, the sink... The water from the sink is white and cloudy. (Picture below) I was scared to drink it and to even brush my teeth out of fear of whatever they put in it. After the most uncomfortable night of sleeping I've had in a while, we took a look at the breakfast menu. We figured that we best not try the "cold boiled eggs." Go somewhere else... read more

Some of this older reviews are really generous. This hotel is old and it shows, but aside from that it's not that clean, not everything works, and it's really sketchy. There are notices EVERYWHERE about protecting yourself and your stuff. My room was not very clean, I found hair on the bed and a spot showing on the bed skirt with this nasty spot; not a stain but it almost looked like vomit. The towels are old stained and scratchy. There are 3 doors into my room, making me feel really on edge. Luckily we are only here for one night. I would never recommend this hotel, and I'm glad I will never need to come back. read more

Solid cheap bigger room no carpet! Pool hot breakfast included freeways close good value

I was pleasantly surprised... I had a bad reservation in Big Bear Lake and had to scramble for a place to stay downhill in Barstow. This place came through at a good rate, and for an old hotel they actually do a really good job. The rooms are nice and clean, TV and A/C up to date, and they even have a fitness room and provide breakfast to order in the mornings if you want. Staff is professional and have their acts together. Parking lot and other clientele aren't sketchy, and the downstairs pool looks real nice. They're also along Old Route 66 so there's quite a few restaurants nearby across the freeway, plus a couple of interesting ones closer by, plus you're right across from a gas station and right next to I-40 for a quick exit (yet it's not loud like most hotels next to a freeway). This is a solid place to stay, and if you're passing through or need to stay downhill from Big Bear then I totally recommend this hotel. read more

I wanted to praise the California Inn, Barstow, California. We had a one night stay on September 11, 2023. I noticed my cell phone was missing, when we arrived home in Arizona. I notified California Inn Right away. They called me back in minutes. They told me my cell was found in our room and placed in the lost and found, by cleaning staff. Management indicated that they would send the cell to my home. The package arrived within days. I commend the cleaning staff for their honesty and the Inn management for responding so quickly. We will definitely make the California Inn our place to stay, when traveling through California to visit family. I'm shocked at how many good reviews have been left for this place! The bathroom was tiny, dirty and there was no hot water. Then the tub faucet would not turn off. It was literally running not just a drip. They sent the maintenance guy to flush the cold water out of the pipes and he got the water to slow to a drip which was still annoying. We turned it on to shower and again it would not turn off. The woman at the front desk was unwilling to give us another room and sent the maintenance guy again. It was his day off and when he came the 2nd time he said he would have to turn the water off. They gave us another room so I had to pack up my 86 yr old mom and move us down the hall. This tub was also not suitable so we just washed up from the sink. Also, upon arrival there were 2 homeless men in the parking lot, one speaking loudly to himself. They gave us a 20% discount the next day for our trouble and the breakfast was decent. The bed was uncomfortable on one side. Would never stay here again. read more

I just had a horrible experience with California inn Barstow and Booking.com . instead of helping me they actually treated me like it's my fault. I'm still shaking from this very bad experience. Let me tell you what happened and you can decide if you can trust booking.com: After Christmas of 2023 we traveled and booked through booking.com one night in California inn Barstow in South of California. During the night it was very cold and we had very thin blankets in the room. We asked the motel if they can bring us more blankets but to our surprise they told us that they cannot. We tried to sleep with the heater that they have in the room, but it was so loud and noisy that we couldn't sleep with it. So we called them again and ask if we can switch rooms to have less noisy heater. But again, although they did have rooms available, they told us that they cannot move us to any different room. After not sleeping all night I called booking.com in the morning to tell them what happened and to ask for a full refund because the motel couldn't provide us what they promised - we just couldn't sleep all night. The agent called the property to ask them if what I just told her is true and indeed the front desk approved that everything that I said was true. Then the agent from booking.com called me back and told me that because they approved it we will get the full refund next week. I was naive and thought that this is the end of it, but then after 1 or 2 weeks we've got only small amount and not the full refund. I tried to connect booking. Com for four times, and each time they told me that they will contact me and never did. until, in the fourth time finally I reached someone that have the authority to deal with this kind of a problem. I asked him why didn't we get the full refund as promised. His answer shocked me. He told me that they request a full refund from the property but the manager of the property denied. He wrote them that I didn't ask them for help during the night but only the day after and that's why they declined my request to pay a full refund. Then I reminded the agent in booking.com that actually they have proof that this email is wrong and that we did ask several times during the night for their help in the property and they just didn't help us. Booking.com record all the phone calls so they can hear that the front desk approved that we did ask during the night for help and they did not help us. You would think that this kind of proof will be enough in order to convince booking.com that we are telling the truth, but then the agent from booking.com instead of helping us told us that they cannot give us a full refund because the manager d of the property declined it and it doesn't matter that they have a proof that the property is lying about what happened that night. Also it didn't matter to him that the booking.com agent agreed that the property didn't provide us a proper service, approved that the front desk approved that we are telling the truth and approved that we will get a full refund. He actually said to me that I can do nothing about it and that I will not get a full refund from the booking.com. I was so frustrated, I'm telling the truth here and yet they treat me like I'm the bad guy here read more

This hotel was the most annoying and uncomfortable hotel I've stayed at. Bring extra pillows. The brightest main room light would turn on anytime we got up to use the bathroom and the switch to turn it off was by the entry door. But worst of all, the pillows are so lumpy I got a crick in my neck and now I have the worst headache from lack of sleep. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is their breakfast. While everyone is still in Pandemic mode and not serving or just teasing you with bread and boiled eggs, these guys do a great job with providing a proper breakfast, including waffles, biscuits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs and sausage links. We stayed in the Family room, 2 queens plus a single bed, we were over the moon with the value of this place. We just needed some sleep on our way to Vegas so not sure if we stayed longer how it is but the room was perfect, it wasn't hot in the room when we arrived. AC was cold. Nice beds my husband slept soundly and he has issues sleeping usually. Grabbed some bananas on our way out in the morning, easy checkout and check-in. First time staying here and i honestly really like it! The rooms are very nice and i love that they provide more than the normal amenities and i was so surprised by it! I highly recommend California Inn in Barstow. I stayed there from 12/20 to 12/22. It's older, but it's clean. My room was nice, not fancy, but nice. The price was $65 for a King. The taxes and service charge kicked it up to just under $100. AND they have a full breakfast with sausage and eggs, biscuits and gravy, waffles, and more. I've been going through a tough time, but staying here lifted my spirits. Thank you. Oh and I almost forgot the shower. Powerful!!! read more

We stayed here recently well in route from New Mexico to San Diego. Front desk staff wasn't helpful. The Wi-Fi in the rooms didn't work. The light in the bathroom didn't work. There was no soap in the room. When I went to the front desk to ask for soap, I had to stand there for 10 minutes while the lady at the front desk fielded a call from another unhappy customer.There was dog crap in the breezeway. They allow people to bring their dogs but they don't monitor and don't have the staff to clean up when the owners don't. Skip this place! read more

This is a scam. I booked reservation through booking.com and paid for someone else. The person showed up with valid photo id and was denied reservation. I called hotel and they said they need to see the card used to pay physically. When I booked through booking com they specifically asked me if I am paying for someone else. They asked me the name of the person who will be staying etc . The hotel declined the accomodation and receptionist said she need to have the card physically present. So I had to drive one hour to show them my bank card. Because my friend had no place to go I rushed and forgot to take my wallet. The receptionist never told me if I will need anything else other than my bank card. Anyways I get there and showed her the bank card. Now she demanded to see my id . The whole process is ridiculous. The website allows you to pay for someone else.But hotel does it allow the accomodation you paid for without physically looking at the bank card and your id . Nevertheless the hotel declined to honor prepaid reservation. They charged my card 84 dollars and now refuse to refund . If you are not satisfied with documentation I am presenting you why the hell would you still charge my account. This is sharking. Now I will have to take them to the court to recover my money. This is so ridiculous .But I can't let them scam myself. They picked up wrong person to scam. read more

In the main lobby from 6am-9am. Foods like...mini cupcakes, mini brownies, mini cinnamon swirls, scrambled eggs, sausage links, biscuits, gravy, waffle mix (make the waffles yourself) Miscellaneous: ***bathroom has a shower, tub, towel rack, toilet, sink, and a huge mirror. This place is super sketchy... I pulled up and it looked like a brothel. I walked inside and mentioned my concerns that I felt like there was prostitution happening in multiple units as we pulled up. The lady totally brushed it off. Then we checked in and as we walked into the room it strongly smelled of urine and was filthy. It was clear that this place has been around forever and is rotting. The toilet literally fell apart as we lifted the lid. The bathtub was rusty. The bedding was matted and we immediately turned around to check out. The woman refused to give me a refund and refused to give me her managers information. I called at least a dozen times requesting a manager over the next two weeks and apparently the woman lied and said that we were actually using the room the whole time. I took video of us asking for the refund and leaving 20 minutes after arriving because I knew that she wasn't going to give me a refund. I was shocked to hear that she lied to Priceline and that Priceline was not going to back up our video evidence in anyway. I emailed them as well as Priceline the information but ultimately had to battle it with my bank. I would advise sleeping in a parking lot before trying to stay at this location. If you want a similar experience give your money to a homeless person and asked to smell their tent. read more

Had a great stay here. 5 star staff. Was happy to see they had lemonade and cookies in the lobby. It made me feel important. Had a coffee make in room. Pool wasn't heated, I didn't get to use this time. Was very close to the drive in theater. Loved that you had coffee in lobby. Ice machine was a plus. Close to the freeway. Stayed here for two nights with my fiancee while on a sightseeing trip that included Calico Ghost Town. This is a great little Inn and the staff is awesome. The rooms are spacious with a decent size refrigerator and microwave. You will find that the entire Inn is spotless. Our room was on the first floor with a door that opens to the backyard patio pool. Barstow can get mighty hot during July, so you will be making good use of the room air conditioning. They provide free breakfast from 5am to 9am. Due to COVID, it is not a buffet for now. You call the front desk using a menu they provide upon check-in. Shout out to Ruby who checked us into the Inn, she is a real GEM! We will definitely stay here again when in the area. read more

Checked into our hotel for the night. Did some research and this place was ranked #5 in hotels of Barstow. Staff is nice, room is clean and includes two sinks, fridge, balcony, microwave. The television is a little small; however, has direct tv and picks up a variety of great channels. The outside has tables, a pool (when weather permits) and a grill. I will update when we check out but so far based on price, comfort, amenities, location I give three strong maybe four stars depending on how good breakfast is. At first look, I was kind of concerned because of how depressing the exterior looked. I was tired and needed to get out of my vehicle after traveling 6 hours in it. Staff at check in was/is very nice and had a great attitude. Room is very spacious, carpet is stained, door has holes from previous lock hardware, towels are stained, pillows are kind of old, ( I'm afraid to take cases off) I will update after breakfast tomorrow. I just feel for the money paid maybe these little details should be attended to. This hotel was dirty, not recently remodeled as sign claims. All doors in room were grimy, bed uncomfortable did not use pillows old and lumpy, belong in trash. The walls are paper thin, could hear neighbors TV until around 1 am people pounded on door to tell him to turn off. At 6 am it was back on again. Shower did not have not water. I ran the water for six minutes to get it Luke warm after being in the shower for a couple of minutes it became cold. You would be better off sleeping in your car. Pictures of hotel were not what the room looked like. Not even going to bother with breakfast. Just want to get out of here and get a shower. read more

Heaven help me. I was on a road trip in America, then sadly had to come back to California, and stay in this absurd hotel before my final day of driving. The lady that checked us in was polite and helpful. Twas downhill from there. Broken lamp outside the hallway entry door, and notices posted about locking your cars up, both bad signs. I immediately felt surrounded by crime. Water from shower smelled stale and chemical-laden. Pool had detritus floating throughout, water felt cold and slimy when I put my foot in. Neighbors above sounded like stampeding elephants banging the ceiling down and people on one side started playing their "funky jams" loudly and blowing smelly schwag weed smoke down the hall at 9:30pm, when most people in hotels tend to quiet down, not get louder. Some strange foreign men stood outside our sliding glass door talking very loudly around 11pm. My husband went to the door to see what was up and the man tried to hand my husband a key and speak to him in some unknown language. The entire place looked pretty beat up and felt overtaken by weirdness. Probably a place for human trafficking tbh. We heard multiple people having loud ugly animalistic sex very late at night. I frankly feel fortunate to have survived my stay. read more
