We popped in here (well the beer garden) to get a couple beers after hiking. It was laid back and fun. Cornhole at the back and just a nice selection of picnic tables and chairs around. Staff was nice enough. It was a low key vibe. I would go back as it was just easy going. read more

This is by far the best bar in Breckenridge. Very warm and welcoming staff as well as many locals that frequent this bar. There are two sides and one side has an upstairs but they are not connected. So if one side is full check the other side. By the way, they also sell the best skis in the world and they used to have a lifetime warranty from any separation of the layers, so ask. They're also awesome looking skis! read more

Everybody strap in and make sure the belt is tight. If you want to get a true taste of the Colorado hospitality this is the place to be. Friday night, Saturday night, hell if they were open Monday morning I'd be here. Kelci and Pat truly made me feel welcome to this state. The is no place I'd rather have a drink than Rocky Mountain Underground. Cheers to the staff and owner for hiring such amazing hosts. Nice local place but needs to be bigger to hold the crowd that comes through. The only negatives were there was only one bartender and there were 30 people waiting to order, he was incredibly efficient but they definitely needed to have two. The second was the music was too loud, with the music and the amount of people in the bar it was difficult to hear the company you went with. The drinks were AMAZING. They had great old fashions, hot toddy's, and Juan too many's. I would definitely recommend this place, just hope you catch it during a slow time. read more

Small place to get drinks here. I got a marg that was delicious and the other drink was mixed with wine that my friend really enjoyed. Most of their seating is outside, but they have a heat lamp at every corner for you to stay warm while you enjoy a quick drink here. read more

Not the place to visit in Breckenridge. Went yesterday and the bitchy bartenders were just gossiping/talking behind the bar not being attentive to anyone trying to get a drink. The bartender looked very depressed to be there and was very mean to my husband and I. Just cursing behind the bar, shitting on tourists, meanwhile we were sitting right there. Most the staff seemed coked up running to the bathroom constantly touching their nose. Would not recommend. Extremely rude and drunk staff who seemed more interested in their personal issues than working the bar. Great spot. The outdoor bartender was the man! Appreciate his hospitality and kindness. Gave us the lay of the land too since we from out of town. My wife Botto had a great time, she is 7 months pregnant with our 4th child and she still had a blast thanks to him. 5/5 would recommend. read more

Why I hadn't seen this place before? It's awesome! Cool vintage ski shop with hipster vibe and amazing craft cocktails.... very hard to decide which one to get though. They also have a good selection of beer. They have a big patio at the back (when I went there was a band playing) where pups are allowed, honestly it's my new favorite spot for the summer. The front porch is big enough to have a good crowd of people but still feels cozy. read more

Live music, dog-friendly and reasonably priced drinks (plus a great beer selection)...can't get anything better! We love coming here and so does our 5 month old puppy, Harper. Such a fun and friendly atmosphere. The bartenders are my favorite and the bands that play always keep everyone moving! It would be awesome to see them still use the backyard area somehow once it starts getting colder. I love this place too much to go all winter without enjoying it. read more

A great ski-shop/craft bar combo. Local beers on tap, great craft cocktails, & a stunning beer-garden out back. Dog-friendly, with lawn games in the beer-garden. Live music on weekends, from great local bands. You can even bring your food with you, as they don't serve food, but focus on craft cocktails. A few wines on selection, as well. Look for bartender Alicia, for some of the greatest cocktails you've ever had. read more

RMU is a cool mix between a bar and ski shop, so get all liquored up and grab some new gear before hitting the slopes! The bar area is small, maybe about 8 seats and a couple high tops, but you can lounge around in the ski shop with your beers, browse around and it is even dog/kid friendly. I found RMU while looking for some great beers in town on a recent trip, this place did not disappoint. My fiancé and I are always on the lookout for great beers while on vacation, in Breck we were on the hunt for any bars pouring Outer Range (Frisco, CO) and RMU had this, plus about 11 other craft beers on tap. However, after ordering our beers, we noticed they had the holy grail of bourbon up on the shelf - Pappy Van Winkle.... after chatting with the bartender he said they had just gotten it in that week and gave us the prices for the pours. We got a pour of the 10 year ($30) and 12 year ($50) - great prices considering we were in town from the NYC area and you can expect to pay about 3x this amount in any other bar. A great treat to find such excellent bourbon to have with our beers. RMU had by far the best beer and spirits collection in the Breck area, a cool atmosphere and great staff. Seems like there is a nice patio/beer garden that I can't wait to enjoy next time I come back in the summer. cheers. read more

This bar was recommended to us by every person we asked where we should go. We did start going out on the earlier side, around 8:00pm on a Thursday night and started here. We started off here as it has been recommended as one of the most popular bars in town, and unfortunately we're underwhelmed. There weren't that many people there, and the ones who were there did not seem interested in talking to anybody new. After telling this to one of the other locals, they said if we went back at 10:00, the place would be bumping, but after our first experience we didn't have much of an inclination to return. I live down the street from Broken Compass, yet have been swayed to come here regularly instead a similar vibe, but I LOVE the direction this spot keeps going. It has the best relaxed vibe, a fun staff, and they're dog friendly as long as you're a good owner and keep your eye on your dog. They don't brew their own beer, but change up their selection regularly and serve craft beer from several local, Colorado breweries. It's also in the heart of downtown with TONS of outdoor space available in both the front and back. Highly recommend if you're looking for a local, chill vibe any night of the week. read more

Solid cocktail game! We always stop in here when up in Breck. We always get sucked in and stay way too long! The drinks are inventive and special. The bartender there on Oct. 19th, during the day, was phenomenal! She tended the bar alone and with insane precision. So impressive! A huge favorite for us! read more

We visited this place twice while in Breck and the place itself is really nice. Nice looking bar and great back area. The owners did a great job. The staff on the other hand were just rude, both times! I understand that it's covid, we all do, but it doesn't give anyone the right to be rude to customers. The first night the bartenders were not friendly to me or my friends. Not even knowing that we were together. The second night the guy at the front just told us to turn around and walk the way we came in, there was no room for us. When I asked why he was so rude he said that he is not the mayor and doesn't make the rules... What? Is that supposed to be funny? Well... It's not. People spend a ton of money to be in this town and without us being here these people would have no jobs. There is a way that you can talk to people without having an attitude and I don't think covid should be an excuse for bad customer service. It's a shame to have such a nice establishment and customers treated poorly. read more

Transitioning from boarding to skiing so figured we'd go buy skis from the best in the biz. Went to RMU this week and had a great experience, very cool place. Top of the line gear and they have a really nice bar attached. Shop and cocktail~our kind of place. Brand new store loaded up with all the gear. Got to hear the story of how they started many years ago. Met with Cam who took the time and went over options. Wound up buying the Junia womens skis. My husband drank while I shopped, sending him back by the end of the week for his new pair. We all left happy. Great place to shop, owned and ran by good people. read more

I stopped in late September during the soft opening of RMU. LOVE the merchandise, they are very passionate about Breckenridge and knowledgeable of the skis and products you might need. The attached bar is now open, so you can hang & drink a local beer while shopping and get some pointers on what to do and where to go during your stay (thanks Jesse!) Can't wait to return and ski, I tell everyone about RMU and how sorry they will be if they don't make it a part of their Breckenridge experience! Very happy to support them! read more

The lady working as the hostess/bouncer was one of the rudest people I've met. She told our group that there wasn't enough space in the bar for the size of our group. We went to a nearby bar but then watched her let in 4 groups the same size as ours. We then went back later in the night once more people had cleared out but she still claimed there wasn't enough space for our group, however there were multiple large groups in the bar sitting and at least 15 people standing at the bar. The whole interaction was disappointing as we wanted to celebrate the bachelor in our party, but this was ruined by the hostess who for some reason seemed adamant with not letting us into the bar. It takes a lot for me to write a negative review for a business, but I felt this situation needed to be heard. I would absolutely give this business a zero star if I could. read more

Rocky Mountain Underground is an outdoor retailer born in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. RMU is the result of a group of friends united by their passion for skiing and adventure. This employee owned business has been hand-crafting skis since 2008 and continues to strive for innovation in the outdoor industry. RMU recently opened Breckenridge's first ski shop + bar, featuring the RMU showroom and ski demos, int'l inspired cocktails, and 12 beers on tap, along with meat and cheese plates. Bring your own food in and enjoy a beverage (note, we are not a restaurant). Look for a backyard beer garden coming summer 2017.

History

Established in 2008.

The idea- Our goal from the start was not to start an international company. Rather, our goal from the beginning, as skiers, was simply to understand more about skis and the design for our own purposes. We began researching the process, equipment, and materials necessary with the same passion that we had previously brought to the table when researching new lines to ski, snow conditions, and weather patterns. The name- The first pair we pressed, in 2008, we could not even ski on. Not understanding at the time what we were embarking on, we had built about 50 pairs of what were slowly starting to become decent skis for friends at a price range of 30 beers to a couple hundred bucks... and the word was out. If you need something built, go see the Rocky Mountain Underground guys. The name was given to us literally because we were pressing skis underground in the Rocky Mountains.

Meet the Business Owner: Michael W.

RMU is the result of a group of friends united by their common passion for skiing. In 2008, Mike started building skis with this group in his garage, exchanging a pair of skis for a case of beer, while working full time as a firefighter. The skis became a success and gain recognition in the coming years. Mike left the firehouse to pursue RMU full time. In 2011, RMU won the award for Innovation in Design from ISPO. Today, RMU is an international company, headquartered in Breckenridge, CO and Munich, Germany.

There was no wait at all, which is pretty rare in Breckenridge, especially during ski season. We got seated right away and everything felt easy from the start. It was the kind of place where you can just kick back after a day on the mountain and grab some good food. Our waiter Trevor was an absolute chiller. Seriously one of the most laid-back and friendly servers I've had in a while. He came over right away, brought us waters, and just had a super good attitude the whole time. Instead of rushing through everything like some places do, he actually talked with us and made the whole experience feel way more personal. One thing we really appreciated was how cool he was about the menu. My son wanted to order off the kids menu and Trevor had no issue with it at all. He didn't make it weird or complicated, he just said no problem and took the order. Little things like that go a long way and made the whole meal way smoother. The food also came out really fast and everything we got was solid. Trevor kept checking in at the perfect times and made sure our waters stayed full without being annoying about it. He also talked with us about skiing and the conditions around Breckenridge, which was cool because we had just been out on the mountain. It felt like talking to someone who actually enjoys the town and the people coming through. The best part was honestly after we left. We accidentally forgot something at the table and didn't realize until we were already outside. When we came back, Trevor was literally waiting with it ready to give it back to us. That kind of thing doesn't happen everywhere. Overall the service was great, the food came out fast, and Trevor was an absolute chiller the entire time. I'd definitely come back here again.

Diego, the operations manager, is built like a man who has never once skipped leg day and apparently runs a strict calf inspection program at the door. Nobody gets into Highside without adequate lower leg development, or inspection. I don't make the rules. Diego does. He examined the situation, measured the meat, and reluctantly allowed us entry. Once inside, things somehow became less normal. The smoked wings were absolutely unbelievable. Crispy, smoky, delicious, and worth whatever bizarre calf based TSA screening Diego is running out front. Then there's Rose. Rose is an outstanding bartender who loves Nickelback with a passion normally reserved for religion, family, and oxygen. Mention Nickelback and her eyes light up. Sing Nickelback at the bar and you have apparently entered into a legally binding friendship with her. So there I was, three beers deep, eating smoked wings, staring respectfully at Diego's magnificent calves, and singing "LOOK AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH" with Rose in a Breckenridge taproom while my girlfriend presumably reconsidered several major life decisions. The food came out quickly, tasted good, and the service was fast for most of our visit. The only things that stood out were that we were seated upstairs while we had a stroller with our toddler. Our server headed upstairs without asking if we needed a hand carrying it, or an elevator, which felt a little odd. It wasn't a huge deal, but a quick offer to help would have gone a long way. The only other hiccup was at the end of the meal. Everything moved quickly until we were ready to pay. we waited about 15 minutes for our check, which felt a little longer than expected. Overall, those were pretty minor issues compared to the rest of the experience. Great vibes, good food, and we'd definitely come back the next time we're in Breckenridge.

There was absolutely no way we were driving past the Frisco exit without pulling off. Outer Range is our ultimate mountain pit stop. They have an awesome location with a stunning modern build and plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the fresh mountain air. It is wild to think that we just visited their sister location in the French Alps during our recent European travels. The fact that they can maintain total excellence across two different continents is unreal. The two spots are completely equal, and the Colorado taproom continues to prove why they are world-class. The beers were spectacular as always. We started out with a couple of pints of their New England-style juice. In the Steep is a masterclass in the style with a beautiful, pillowy mouthfeel and heavy tropical notes. Sun in the Clouds was just as impressive. It delivers those bright citrus flavors without the aggressive hop bitterness. I even noticed Cross Flow on the tap list, which is a fresh, hazy collaboration they just put out with Casey Brewing. Before packing back into the truck, we made sure to grab a new metal tacker to hang up in the garage. We also snagged a four-pack of Lil John Wayne. The can art is easily the funniest label on the shelf, but the actual beer is a solid ten out of ten. To fuel the final stretch of the drive home, we ordered from Bird Craft right inside the brewery. They do not cut corners here. They are frying up full wings, including the drummies and the flippers, and they will toss them in any of their house sauces for an incredible snack. The skin stays remarkably crispy even under a thick coat of sauce, and the meat stays perfectly juicy. It is exactly the kind of savory comfort food you need after a long road trip. Every single time we stop by this place, they manage to completely knock it out of the park.

Both Broken Compass locations are great spots, and we visit each at least once (if not more) when we're in town. Beertenders are friendly, and there's often a good selection of dogs to pet as well, which helps us cope when ours isn't with us. Drink beer, pet dogs. Words to live by.

The second night we shared the baked salmon atop pearl couscous, which was excellent, and prepared the way all salmon should be served--medium rare. We added the butter lettuce salad that was exceptional with an essential ingredient that I can only describe as the chef's secret creation. It was crumbles of something sweet. I asked, but can't recall the answer. This second night made up for that lousy tartare from the first night.

The food also came out really fast and everything we got was solid. Trevor kept checking in at the perfect times and made sure our waters stayed full without being annoying about it. He also talked with us about skiing and the conditions around Breckenridge, which was cool because we had just been out on the mountain. It felt like talking to someone who actually enjoys the town and the people coming through. The best part was honestly after we left. We accidentally forgot something at the table and didn't realize until we were already outside. When we came back, Trevor was literally waiting with it ready to give it back to us. My husband and I go to Breckenridge every 6 months or so. We decided to try out Rocky Mountain Underground for some drinks. Excellent service and friendly staff. Really made us feel like a local. Cocktails were great-they even know how to make craft/prohibition era cocktails, which is hard to find anywhere. The beer selection is great as well. Diego, the operations manager, is built like a man who has never once skipped leg day and apparently runs a strict calf inspection program at the door. Once inside, things somehow became less normal. The smoked wings were absolutely unbelievable. Crispy, smoky, delicious, and worth whatever bizarre calf based TSA screening Diego is running out front. Then there's Rose. Rose is an outstanding bartender who loves Nickelback with a passion normally reserved for religion, family, and oxygen. Mention Nickelback and her eyes light up. Sing Nickelback at the bar and you have apparently entered into a legally binding friendship with her. So there I was, three beers deep, eating smoked wings, staring respectfully at Diego's magnificent calves, and singing "LOOK AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH" with Rose in a Breckenridge taproom while my girlfriend presumably reconsidered several major life decisions. Castaways Cove is a laid back eatery that has a fun tiki theme to it. They claim to be the world's highest tiki bar on their website. We sat at the bar and had a fun bartender that served us. There was also a good crowd on hand that night that added to the fun vibe of this place. The drink menu has a nice variety of tiki themed drinks. I am a big Mezcal guy and ordered the Smuggling Nuts. For food, Castaways Cove has poke bowls and island snacks. The spam musubi was amazing. We loved them so much that we ordered a couple more. Overall, Castways Cove was a good time and ended up being a great way to close out our fun trip to Breckenridge.
