I have been going to Rockridge Optometry since 1982. Doctors Sarver and Yokoi are amazing and I have seen them all in my decades of vision care. I regularly see Dr. Yokoi. My family has a history of some awful eye problems and I have a really strong prescription, so Dr. Scott always takes the extra time to test in different ways to be sure I am where I should be. Dr. Scott is really good with kids and has been seing my son since he was 5. That's a bonus when you have a wiggly kid. Front office staff is the best in the business. I've been going to Rockridge Optometry for something like 40 years--back then I saw Morton, the father of the two Sarvers, Donald and Larry, who are there now. Donald has been my optometrist as long as he's been there, and he is excellent. Very knowledgeable (he has taught at UCB's optometry school), thorough, careful, and thoughtful, he knows what he's doing and personalizes his knowledge to your needs. I trust him. I had an eye exam and a contact trial here. The first two appointments I waited for 25 and 15 minutes. I did not complain these things happen. The third appointment I walked in 8 minutes late and they said my appointment was canceled. That is not okay by me. The exams were just fine. read more

I'm writing this review because I just sat on my glasses and remembered my experience here on a busy Saturday. The greeters advised that there is a wait since they only have one optician. Normally a wait would mean taking off stars, but I was really impressed with the service. They have a small coffee station and I actually didn't have to wait long. I've had bad experiences having glasses adjusted before so I did have concerns. The optician looks like a kpop idol and is quite young but she is nothing short of a professional-considerate, skilled and knowledgeable despite having to serve an endless stream of customers. I didn't feel rushed and all my concerns were addressed and she was very apologetic for the wait. I think she was training her successor so I don't know if she'll be around much longer but I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to get a new pair of glasses. read more

The store front looks nice enough. The frames are ok but nothing with much pizzazz like at Phoenix Optical which is just up the street. They have literally hundreds if thousands of frames to choose from. The staff is warm and knowledgeable about everything related to the industry. The staff always greets me with a smile when I walk in the door. Dr. Yokoi is very thorough and you get much more than a vision test. I didn't care for my first experience there. Went out of my way to visit them based on positive Yelp reviews. Seemed like a nice office. I found the reception to be welcoming. I was asked to provide insurance details before my first discussion, which I didn't care for, but everyone was very nice all the while so I didn't mind that much. However, I had an experience with Dr. Morton Sarver which was small, but considering this was out of the way for me, an offbeat comment before he had my trust put me off and that was significant enough for me to find another place to spend my money. read more

So this place is a couple blocks from my boyfriends, and I see some good reviews here (although the most recent ones aren't great, but still they seem pretty good) and like I said it's close to my boyfriends. Making an appointment is pretty easy, and when I get there they're pretty friendly and all. Everything is smooth and the opto seems like a nice guy. We go through the whole "which is better 1 or 2" business and then we get to the end but I can see kind of clearly but not super well. No problem, we go through it again. This time is better, but I'm still not able to see as well as I can with the glasses I already have. I try them on, and we confirm it. So, back to the "1 or 2" business again. Now, yes, I have some real astygmatism (so I've been told) but I've never had this kind of trouble getting my prescription checked. Anyway, third time, and still no dice. This time the opto is clearly annoyed and tells me that, no, this is my prescription. But I can't see as well as with the glasses I already have (which, by the way I got at a Costco 2 years ago, and they work fabulously). But the opto is now irritated and tells me my "eyes just need to get used to it." Ok, so he's the doc, and I get my glasses. Disaster. I feel like I'm on a ship when I wear them. I call the opto, and they tell me to try them for a few days. I tell them I feel like I'm going to walk into a wall if I do. Getting them to actually fix the problem, and suddenly all the niceness vanishes. They want to blame me. In the end, a huge hassle, and I ended up going back to Costco and getting a new pair made there. Two blocks from my boyfriends, but definitely not worth the hassle and lack of professionalism. Dr. Yokoi is our primary doc there but we have also seen the other docs for emergencies and they were stellar as well. The staff is amazing; personable, professional & efficient! My yearly appointment time was about to happen. Apparently it was one day later on my calendar than on theirs, I'm quite sure the mistake was mine. About 10 minutes after the actual appointment time a receptionist telephoned to tell me I'd missed the appointment. I was mortified, but luckily I wasn't too far away so she told me to come in, anyway. What a relief! I'm more than satisfied with the services provided. I've been seeing them for around 15 years. My only dissatisfaction is the male who fits you for lenses. He has always rubbed me the wrong way and after several uncomfortable tries with him, I"ve chosen to go elsewhere for glasses. read more

I like Dr. Sarver. He gets 4 stars. He puts a lot of attention to his patients. Unfortunately, the staff has a problem sitting on the laurels of their yelp reviews, which is really overrated. I give the front desk people 1 star because out of the 3 I dealt with, none of them really showed that they cared about the people they were talking to. Either I caught each of them on a bad day or they've become accustomed to simply dealing with their clients like they are inconveniences to doing their work on their screen. Just some small suggestions: say "hello," "how are you?" "thank you" or even "you're welcome" when you're talking with customers instead of assuming that saying "what can I help you with" was enough. It just left a bad taste in my mouth when simple pleasantries or friendly smiles got met with deadpan responses from the employees there. Mind you I am not a chatty person. I just expected a little more from a 4 1/2 star establishment in terms of customer relations. read more

I've been going to Rockridge Optometry for years. They've got a great location and have always been really easygoing and helpful. The last time I was there they were running behind in their schedule and I had to wait for quite a bit. When I checked out at the end of my appointment they gave me a gift card to a local cafe down the road to apologize for the wait and I didn't even make a stink about the wait! Everyone was very nice, but not pushy. They have a good selection of frames and if you ask for economical options they will pull out less expensive glasses that aren't on display otherwise. They aren't gorgeous, but it's nice to have the option. read more

Dr. Yokoi and his staff are the best!!! I went this past Saturday because I woke up with a swollen the worst part it was on my sister's wedding day. Rockridge Optometry was the only place that was open early on Saturdays, I arrived unannounced and the receptionist as very welcoming and empathetic to what was happening. As soon as I completed the paperwork they took me in and Dr. Yokoi promptly saw me at ease and explained what happened to me. He was very friendly and was very generous in giving me a sample eye drop which worked very well and reduced my cost he also gave me a fair price because I don't have insurance. I personally have perfect vision but I would highly recommend Dr. Yokoi if there's anyone in need of a GREAT optometrist!!!! read more

What a difference coming to this optometrist with my 9 year old son (from another optometrist on Grand Ave). The staff here were very thoughtful and warm with him. Dr. Sakai was also really great with him -- explaining all of the tests and how to understand his prescription. He was anxious about a couple of the tests (including the eye puff test), and she and her staff took their time and did not make him feel bad for feeling anxiety about it. I have been taking my teenage daughter here for a couple of years, and we have been extremely happy with everyone in the office. We had a terrible experience at our previous optometry office. A staff person there tried to show her how to put in contacts for the first time. She was very impatient with my daughter and this led to tears, etc. We changed to Rockridge Optometry, and she had a fabulous person show her in minutes how to get contacts in and out! We have been working with Dr. Sakai most recently and really like her. I recently had a question, and she called me back immediately and was very helpful. read more

Really appreciate Dr. Yokoi's expertise and care. He found a tear in my retina (detaching retina) during a routine eye exam. Can't thank him enough for his thorough exam. He referred me to a retina specialist for laser surgery. Dr. Yokoi did extra follow up tests (oticon?) without charging me just because he wanted to check the results of the laser surgery. Excellent service and finally a pair of contacts I can actually use! This is my fifth attempt at getting contacts for my severe stigmatism. I walked out with a pair of lenses that are comfortable and that give me 20/20 vision. Very organized, clean and friendly office. My glasses and new lenses came in very quickly. Dr. Don Sarver is a genius. I am gradually losing my eyesight due to macular degeneration. Dr. Don has been able to tweak my contact lens and eyeglass prescription which allows me to continue driving safely. There is no comparison. The personal care and attention is nothing like anything I received at Kaiser.
